Letter Editor from the

As I pen this, Leicester’s just been ranked as the 9th Best City to live in, according to business consultants PwC and think-tank Demos’ 2015 Growth For Cities Index report. The research was based on 10 categories measuring economic performance and quality of life and saw Leicester lead the charge as far as rival Midlands cities go, with nearby Nottingham trailing in 19th place. Whilst Birmingham was seventh in the worst cities list, Derby was forgotten about and didn’t hit either poll.

The thing with Leicester is that it’s always, in my humble opinion, suffered from a PR and image problem: it’s always been a city of diversity, of acceptance and of opportunity, but it’s never believed in itself. It’s meant that other (lesser) cities have benefited from inward investment to a much higher scale than our Shire and opportunities have bypassed us and headed north or west. But, whether you believe charts like this at all, or take them with a pinch of salt, what they do demonstrate is that Leicester is being talked about. Whether it’s the legacy of King Richard III or Jamie Vardy I, no-one can dispute that the city is on the up. We are privy to information about schemes that are bubbling just beneath the surface that will transform great swathes of the city when they’re announced throughout 2016. Leicester is an exciting place to live, to work and to call home. Culturally, we also seem to have hit our stride. Curve has become one of the country’s most prolific and celebrated commissioning-theatres outside of the Capital. That it’s fortunes have been so spectacularly reversed is testament to the grit, determination and passion that is so evident across our city and throughout our sectors. The downside of all this development is that I’ve run out of space to tell you all about what we have in this fabulous new Spring edition. I’ve no wordcount left to mention our Fashion Spectacular, which lists the 50 essential items every wardrobe should contain this season; or the exclusive interview with BGT finalist and magician Jamie Raven; nor our competition to win a Spa Evening at Ragdale Hall. As I’d urge you to devour every page – and go back for extra helpings on our new look website and social media platforms – I’d recommend you do the same in our County this Spring. Discover Leicester and let’s make it number one next time. Until Summer,

A Rolls‑Royce like no other AFTER THE DARKNESS COMES DAWN. ITS STRIKING SILHOUETTE TRANSFORMED AT A TOUCH, ITS INVITING INTERIOR OPENED TO THE ELEMENTS – TO FRIENDS, TO THE UNEXPECTED, TO ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES. SENSUOUS STYLING

Dawn’s alluring presence is unmistakable, right from the very first encounter. Striking and assertive, its charm and charisma draw you in. With the top up, the mood is powerful. With one touch, its sensuous appeal is unveiled: the roof silently folds away, revealing a seductive interior that connects you to your surroundings like never before.

UNCOMPROMISED COMFORT

Dawn’s interior is an effortless continuation of its exterior. Banks of leather create a soft line, fusing inside and out. The interior is also a destination in itself. Crafted from wood and leather, the cabin is indulgent. Roof up or down, Dawn wraps its passengers in comfort, providing a cosseting private haven and uplifting spaciousness. The deck and rear are finished with handcrafted veneers that waterfall forward to meet the driver. Superior noise isolation, comparable to that enjoyed within a hardtop, lets you carry tranquillity with you. Dawn’s interior offers everything, except compromise.

EFFORTLESS YET EXHILARATING

Beneath Dawn’s sleek exterior sits a 6.6-litre V12 twin-turbo engine: one engineered to deliver a surge of seemingly infinite power that will awaken your senses. A sensation that’s heightened the very second the roof quietly opens. This is open-top driving as you’ve never experienced it before. Here is a motor car that looks to the future and brings with it a new level of finesse. Every drive opens new possibilities.

OMG GUYS! LEGALLY BLONDE IS TOTALLY COMING TO CURVE! Do you think there are any lessons to learn from her as a character? Elle faces a lot of problems throughout her journey in the show. She is criticised, a victim of stereotyping, picked on and attempts to take advantage of her kind nature are not hard to come by. However despite all of this, she stays true to herself and is kind throughout. I think we could all take something from that. You’re making quite a name for yourself in musical theatre, was that always your goal? I always loved musical theatre. As a kid I would watch the 10th anniversary Les Mis video we had time and time again. I learned all the parts off by heart so I could perform them for my brother (who to be honest couldn’t have cared less at the time!). So when I reached 16 all I wanted to do was audition for theatre schools. I auditioned everywhere to no avail but last minute managed to bag myself a spot on Italia Conti’s 1 year course in London. At the same time as auditioning for schools I auditioned for X Factor. I took the opportunity to compete in the X Factor and I don’t regret my decision!

Lucie Jones is not one to let the grass grow under her feet. Since her time in the X Factor she’s been on tour, starred in the West End, presented for MTV and appeared in TV favourites Mid Sommer Murders and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Now she’s in Leicester to tackle the role of Elle Woods in Curve’s production of Legally Blonde. How does it feel to be part of Legally Blonde? To be a part of such an incredible show is SO EXCITING! I cannot wait to get in to rehearsals and explore the show! Did you know the film and the show well before you got the part? Legally Blonde the movie was a firm favourite in our house so when the musical came to the West End I couldn’t wait to see it. I went to the premiere and fell in love with it so returned a further 3 times to watch the show again. It’s a dream to be part of it! Tell us about Elle. Well, she is a popular, loving, intelligent sorority sister who dates the campus’ best catch, Warner. She is beautiful both inside and out and a firm believer that “Blonde” is a way of life- not just a hair colour! Are you similar in any way to Elle? I have a chihuahua named Radley and I used to cheerlead as a kid so even though I am a brunette there are a few surface similarities. Elle is a tenacious girl who works hard for what she wants. and I am pretty tenacious. 10 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

Did you see the X Factor as a way into a career on stage then? I saw the X Factor as a great opportunity to learn and meet likeminded people. I never expected to reach the live finals of the show so when I did I was over the moon! I very quickly met my agent through the lovely people at the X Factor and they pointed me in the right direction of singing teachers, acting coaches, where I should be going to for dance classes etc. I still train with the people I met back then and credit them with every tiny bit of success. Could you see yourself now as a pop performer? Oh absolutely. I love pop music and write songs all the time. Performing current chart music is still a big part of my career (between theatre jobs I gig constantly) and I LOVE IT! Little Mix are my faves at the moment. You never know where life is going to take you let alone life in this career. If I got the chance to record and release Pop music I would love to do it again. What can audiences expect from Legally Blonde? An energetic, well written piece of theatre with a great story and incredibly catchy songs. The creative team attached to this project are, in my opinion, second to none and I can’t wait for people to see the exciting new version of this show that’s being created. I love this show and can’t pick a favourite part, I can give you a top 100 though....

Legally Blonde The Musical , directed by Nikolai Foster, runs from the 11th April to 14th May at Curve. For tickets visit www.curveonline.co.uk or call the box office on 0116 242 3595

NORTHERN C O B B L E R

Northern Cobbler, the English brand that creates handcrafted, high quality, traditional footwear for both men and women, with a witty personality, have launched their new range of sneakers, sandals, brogues and boots for Spring Summer and we’ve fallen for it hard. The fantastic footwear brand, based on Queens Road in Leicester, is quickly getting recognition for quality and attention to detail thanks to the skill and expertise of unique craftsman that use only the best materials. We headed along to their press event to see the ranges first hand, and to taste some of their delicious cakes- that’s right, cakes. Northern Cobbler is half shoe showroom and half coffee shop, a combination we think matches up rather nicely. Just as much thought has been put into their coffee shop as their shoe brand, with the owners working with a baker to create ‘on-trend’ cakes and pastries, like chewy and crisp salted caramel macarons, sweet and nutty pecan slices and much more. So if you’re after a pair of cool new shoes and a cool new hangout, then Northern Cobbler is the one. We also highly recommend their hot chocolate, it’s easily the best in Leicester.

Northern Cobbler’s showroom (and coffee shop!) is situated at 104 Queens Rd, Leicester LE2 3FL or you can visit their website to buy online and view the stockists that carry the range at www.northerncobbler.com

BStyled: Listen up Leicester- the Barrie Stephen brand is growing

The award-winning salon group, Barrie Stephen Hair, has been bringing red carpet hairdressing to Leicestershire for 20 years and has just launched its most exciting salon yet... Going by the name of BStyled, this fifth addition to Barrie Stephen has taken up residence in the fashion-forward area of Hotel Street, fitting perfectly in the midst of Leicester’s Old Town. BStyled is a brand new concept; think of this innovative, unique salon as the vibrant younger sister of the brand; quirky, sassy and independent but with the same first class quality genetics and private jet experience that Barrie Stephen prides itself on. The opening night party saw Sarah Harrison, Leicester’s city centre manager, officially cut the gold ribbon, as she congratulated Barrie on his latest business venture. Sarah applauded Barrie for his two decades of commitment to Leicester and for being such a staunch ambassador for the city and region. She went on to extol the many virtues of this exciting growth area of Hotel Street. After thanking him for his continued passion and involvement in the local community, Sarah finished by reinforcing, to a packed venue of friends and family, how important it is to work and focus on the growth of Leicester and how influential Barrie has proven to be in doing this. BStyled moves away from the classic and simplistic and into the contemporary and a la mode. It’s the perfect pamper destination and pre-night out ritual and doesn’t stop at your hair, boasting express beauty services such as nail and brow services as well as a top quality barber lounge for male clients. The salon will be headed up by a team of five trend-setting fashionistas to keep clients looking groomed and glamorous day-in-day-out. From creative colourists, to a barbering genius, to an up-do expert; BStyled features the best hairdressers in town. “It’s 20 years since I first opened the Anstey salon and my mission every single day since I started by business is to lead the change rather than be led by change,” says Barrie, “And that is what we’re doing! The BStyled brand has got a heartbeat all of its own but importantly, it’s still the red carpet gorgeous brand of Barrie Stephen Hair with the private jet service we know and love.” For pictures from the glamorous launch party visit www.dluxemagazine.co.uk.

Chutney Ivy Showcases Diverse & Innovative Menu. What do you get when you mix traditional Indian cuisine, modern dishes and the Michelin Guide? Why you get Chutney Ivy of course. For the past year, the Leicester based restaurant has gained much recognition within the food industry, having been recommended within the prestigious Michelin guide yet again for 2016, and being nominated, shortlisted and ultimately named runner up for the best Indian restaurant in the Midlands at the British Curry Awards. Their menu, which SIXTYNINE Degrees Magazine were lucky enough to sample, is put together by General Manager and coowner Shaf Islam, who wanted to set his restaurant aside from the cookie cutter Indian restaurants you find all over the Midlands. His inspiration comes from various places, from travelling to different countries and sampling the local food, to even eating other cultural dishes right here in the UK. His crispy duck samosas are in fact inspired by his favourite Chinese dish- crispy duck pancakes and the creamy Jingha Rowshne king prawns were dreamt up when Islam attended a friends wedding in France. His passion for food is clear with every mouthful, and with innovative dishes like pumpkin bhuna and sea bass masala, it’s no wonder that the restaurant is receiving rave reviews from customers and food critics alike. The food is cooked from fresh, using many ingredients from Leicester Market and Chutney Ivy will happily cater to anyone’s spice tolerances, whether adding or subtracting the heat!

Chutney Ivy can be found at 41, Halford Street, Leicester LE1 1TR and you can call them on 0116 251889 to book.

Essential Swimwear: Totally Tropical There is no such thing as a ‘holiday season’ these days, as many of us choose to vacation when the mood or opportunity arises, rather than just in the traditional school summer holidays. Brown’s Lingerie in Stoneygate is one of the only retailers who stock a year-round range of swimwear and co-ordinates, which are just the (holiday) ticket. “The two hottest trends this season are Tropical and Caribbean with strong colours and vibrant prints”, says Shop Owner, Sue Brown. “We have Silk kaftans and dresses, which are not only cool, but can take you from pool to bar to restaurant in style. Our tops are embellished with some sporting gold and silver beads to create stunning effortless silhouettes from every angle”. One of their hottest labels just happens to be from their designer/entrepreneur daughter, Lindsey Brown, whose Myablue Luxe Resortwear is a favourite celebrity purchase and looks fabulous over beachwear or worn with jeans as glamorous outerwear. Her designs, which come from XSmall to +Size, are a celeb favourite: Denise van Outen, Melanie Sykes and Arlene Philips have all purchased recently. The store also stocks stunning swimwear (swimsuits, bikini and 20 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

Entries now open for the Rural Business Awards 2016 Countryside-based firms based all over Britain are being invited to step forward and enter the Rural Business Awards 2016. The only UK-wide business awards for rural enterprises, the scheme is now in its second year and is the brainchild of Leicestershire businesswomen Anna Price and Jemma Clifford (pictured), who wanted to showcase the wealth of entrepreneurial talent in rural areas of Britain – a sector of the economy they felt was all-too-often overlooked by large city-based firms. Boosted by a partnership with the Country Land & Business Association (CLA), this year’s Rural Business Awards have been expanded to include 13 categories including prizes for startups, food & drink, manufacturers and apparel businesses. The only criterion is that they must be countryside-based. At last year’s glittering awards ceremony in Leicestershire’s Stapleford Park, a wide variety of UK rural companies were recognised for their amazing achievements, with the overall champion of champions named as Devon’s Lily Warne Wool, which was also crowned best rural start-up.

24 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

You may recognise Jamie Raven from when he wowed audiences on the 2015 Final of Britain’s Got Talent becoming the series’ most successful Magician ever. Since then there have been over 200 million views online of his mind blowing illusions making him one of the most watched magicians in the world today. Dluxe Leicestershire & Rutland caught up with Jamie ahead of his UK tour which will see him perform at Leicester’s De Montfort Hall on the 18th June, to find out about how he got started in magic, where he gets his inspiration from for new tricks and how it feels to be the man who finally made Simon Cowell believe in magic. So most of us were given a magic set when we were younger but very few of us actually find we have a talent for it. Is that how it started for you? Well I never had a magic set! I reckon I was about 8 or 9. I remember one of my earliest memories was when we used to go on holiday to Spain every summer and I remember hanging round with all the Spanish kids. Spanish playing cards are different to the ones over here and one of the guys did a trick, where you put cards into piles and move this here, that there and so on. I was really intrigued as to how it worked. Later on we went to visit some family friends who lived in India and there was a magician at our restaurant and he showed me how to do some tricks and that is what got me hooked. What was it like for a young magician growing up? I had a little job when I was at school so I would save a bit of money, go up to London and visit some of the magic shops like Davenports in Charing Cross and International Magic on Clerkenwell Road and when I had saved up, I dunno say a fiver, I’d buy another book or a prop and 22 years later here we are. So, before you actually went on Britain’s Got Talent were you actually performing magic as a full time job? Well I went to Bath University when I was 17, not through any academic brilliance but just because my birthday is at the end of August. I got an economics degree but along the way I met a guy who ran an entertainment agency and he said there was a demand for magicians to wander round at parties so I started that. When I finished university I was working as a temp in the day and then performing at corporate gigs at night. I think the first year I did just two gigs, the next it was fifteen, then thirty and it all just snowballed from there. By the time Britain’s Got Talent came around I’d been performing magic professionally for eleven years. So have the gigs changed since your appearance with Simon Cowell and Co? To be honest, they’re the same gigs but you just get treated better! It’s always people in a room and it’ll either be one we call Close Up where you’re mingling around; for example I did one last night for an oil company and I was entertaining their clients. There was probably around sixty people, everybody was seated and I just wandered round doing a mini show at each of the tables. The other week though I did another gig for around 250 people and that was one show on a stage rather than lots of individual ones. So are you getting spotted on the streets now? Yes I’m still getting used to that. Sometimes people will come up to you and say ‘Hi Jamie, how’s it going’ and that’s lovely. I haven’t been asked to do a trick yet; everyone just wants a selfie! But if they did want to see a trick I’d be thrilled to show them. It usually happens at the garage when I’m going to get petrol.

dluxe-magazine.co.uk 25

dluxe spotlight As we’re both talking we’re both using the word trick, is it a demeaning phrase to describe what you do? I don’t like the word; I think it implies that you have tricked someone. I think magic is a form of entertainment and I am an entertainer. Magic is the vehicle that I use to entertain people. So some people sing songs, some people tell jokes, but as a magician I just hope to give an audience something to think about, I’m not claiming anything. I’ll always let people decide for themselves what they think is real and let them try and work things out –it’s not my place to decide for them. Trick implies that you’ve got one over on the audience and that’s never my intention, it’s about enjoying the time we spend together as well as enjoying the illusion itself. So aside from the Britain’s Got Talent judges who is the most famous person you’ve performed for? The most famous would be Richard Branson. I’d done some work Virgin Atlantic before the show and they have lots of events to celebrate lots of things so I’ve entertained a few times on inaugural flights to new locations. I remember being asked to perform on their first flight to Atlanta, and Richard Branson was sat in the bar in first class and I went up and performed some tricks for him. Recently I was on a flight they did to Detroit and afterwards there was a big presentation at a baseball stadium where I did a trick on stage with Richard which was good fun. Has Mr Cowell handed you any more gigs, any more private parties for him? I’ve done a couple of things; one was for his company Syco; I was aked to entertain at their Christmas party, which was amazing, and I got to see him then and say thank you. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity that the show gave me, and it’s obviously his show so it was nice to say thanks. On the day of the final I only got to chat to him briefly afterwards before he got whisked away. He’s just a really nice guy and when you see him on TV obviously, he’s got to be the villain so when you watch it you get the wrong impression of what he’s actually like. I’ve spoken to him a few times in person and he’s been nothing but absolutely lovely to me. So you’ve just headlined the show The Illusionists in the West End, a show that has been touring all over the world and proved hugely successful. Have you been picking up any new illusions along the way? The Illusionists is the most successful touring magic show in the world. A very good friend of mine Philip Escoffey, who is an amazing mind reader, was in the first show they did 3 and a half years ago at Sydney Opera House and I remember talking to him about it and seeing the programme and thinking that I’d love to be a part of that. They came to London last year and I went to watch it and it was fantastic so when the phone call asking me to be part of it I was there in a heartbeat. It was such an incredible honour to be asked to perform but to be asked to headline was even better! Working with magicians who I’ve looked 26 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

up to and respected for so long, people like Kevin James and David Williams who were my inspirations growing up, was fantastic. It’s great working with other magicians to get new ideas on presentation etc. It’s amazing to be able to pick the brains of the people that have inspired you. To be given a chance to do what I love on a theatre stage was amazing, and to do 69 shows was invaluable experience and it was the best experience of my professional life. So has that experience stood you in good stead for your own tour? Well I’ve been doing my own act on stage for half an hour over the last eleven years and with your own tour you are on stage for more like an hour and a half so performing every night in front of 1300 people on a proper theatre stage with lighting and sound was incredibly helpful and really exciting. Half of what I do in the show is close up work but there are lots of other things I’ll be doing in the show , some big illusions like the sort of thing you would see David Copperfield do and then there are some parlour tricks in there as well. So all kinds of magic are covered. So what’s the best trick that you’ve ever seen? I would have to say, there’s a difference between the best trick and the best routine. The best routine I’ve ever seen was Marco Karvo. He’s one of my favourite magicians in the world and he does a routine where he produces all of these different birds from everywhere, dove after dove just appear from nowhere and then right at the end he produces this giant parrot that he throws out into the audience and it flies all the way round the theatre before landing back on his arm. The second it lands on his arm the music stops and the lights come down, it is just the most perfect routine I have ever seen; there’s so much magic involved in it. In terms of my favourite trick I’ve ever seen, it’d probably be David Copperfield flying. That was just amazing watching him actually fly on the stage, and getting a lady out of the audience and carrying her; it was like a real life peter pan. That took my breath away. It’s like asking a musician what their favourite song is, it all depends what mood you’re in though there’s so much. Are there any illusions that you’re still trying to work out how they did it? Oh there are loads! You know what I’ve learnt, it doesn’t matter what profession you’re in, the more you learn, the more you realise how little you actually know. You will only ever be on the tip of the iceberg in any field, there’s always so much more to learn and to discover. That’s what I love about magic.

Jamie Raven will be at De Montfort Hall, on the 18th June. Tickets cost from £18.50 and are available from www. demontforthall.co.uk or at the box office on 0116 233 3111

Look Young In The Sun With Emma Brown Hair & Beauty encompass other aesthetic treatments such as dermal fillers, chemical peels and skin boosting treatments. What’s the usual process when booking in a treatment with you at Emma Brown Hair & Beauty? We’d book you in first for a consultation to discuss which areas you want treated, your expectations, medical history and allergies. From that, we’d book you in , take before photos, perform the treatment and get you in for a review 2 weeks later to take your after photos and assess if any further treatment is needed. In your opinion, who would be the perfect candidate for the treatment and why? Botulinum Toxin works on muscles by relaxing them and smoothing out lines and wrinkles, so the best candidates for treatment are clients who have dynamic lines, ie lines that are made by moving certain parts of the face- forehead, in between the eyebrows and around the eyes. Lines that are present when the face is motionless are called static lines-these lines will soften with treatment but may not go completely and may need other treatments to help them.

Emma Brown Hair & Beauty, situated in Clarendon Park, Leicester have recently expanded their beauty services and we couldn’t be more excited. Not only can you get your brows, eyelashes, nails and tan done at the Salon, they’ve recently introduced cosmetic treatments to their extensive menu. We caught up with their latest recruit, Aesthetic Nurse Emma Hinchcliffe, to talk all about their line relaxing treatments. Hi Emma, thanks for talking to us today. So tell us a little bit about your background?I am a registered nurse with 17 years worth of experience, six of which is within aesthetic nursing. I initially undertook training in the administration of Botulinum Toxin (Botox) for the upper face and expanded my knowledge and skills to 30 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

Where can you have Botulinum Toxin? It can be injected into the forehead, crows feet and between the eyebrows. It can also be injected into the chin, jawline, masseter muscles, corners of the mouth and in the armpits to stop excessive sweating. It is also used medically to reduce spasticity in muscles, for migraines, to reduce excessive blinking (Blephrospasm) and into bladders to reduce over activity.

Prices start from just £175 pounds per area, with one treatment generally lasting around 12-16 weeks. To book in, visit Emma Brown Hair & Beauty at 140 Clarendon Park Rd, Leicester LE2 3AE Or call them on 0116 270 4374 www.emmabrownhair.co.uk

brand focus: helen howe atelier Midlands based, Helen Howe designs and produces the luxury tweed outerwear collection ‘Helen Howe Atelier’ which specialises in bespoke and tailored capes, coats and jackets. We caught up with Helen to see what inspires her, what it takes to be a fashion designer and so much more. How did Helen Howe Atelier start? I’ve worked in fashion for over 16 years, designing and pattern cutting for High Street stores and I’ve also worked as a tutor and lecturer in Fashion, pattern cutting and fashion retail which I loved! I’ve always had a bit of an obsession with coats, tweed and pleating and knew that this is where my heart truly lies, so having worked my way up through the industry I decided the time was right for me to focus on my own brand, incorporating my passion with the knowledge and experience I’d built up over the years.

3 4

5

6

How would you describe your brand? Luxury tweed outerwear, handmade in Britain using the finest quality British tweeds. It’s made to last – timeless elegance. They are investment pieces for you to enjoy for many years, heirloom pieces so to speak. The garments are perfect for every day, a special occasion or outdoor pursuits including equestrian, hunting, shooting and walking. The handwriting is unique, incorporating a range of pleat detailing, curved seaming and using a variety of William Morris and Liberty linings. How long does it take you to create your pieces? It depends on the piece, some take more development than others and some have more work involved in the general make-up. I would say from design and sourcing, through product development, fit and final make-up each new style could take a week, however once the style is finalised subsequent garments are thankfully much quicker!

7 9

8

Who would you love to see wearing Helen Howe Atelier? Hmm tricky one. I guess if I could choose absolutely anyone it would be the Duchess of Cambridge at a polo match/a day at the races! I think my target market is anyone with a love of luxury garments, and those who are interested in British fashion While I hope that my products appeal to as many people as possible I'd say most of my clients have an interest in not only fashion, but in equestrianism, shooting, rural and country life. Where can we get Helen Howe Atelier? As well as my online store, the collection will be stocked at carefully selected stores/boutiques around the country.

To see Helen’s latest SS16 collections, you can visit her website at www.helenhoweatelier.co.uk or follow her on Twitter at @ HHoweatelier.

FIRST LOOK: KH HAIR LEICESTER’S NEW HOME

One of the city’s most established hairdressers, KH Hair, has opened a beautiful new salon on Bowling Green Street in Leicester, as part of its constant evolution. dLuxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND spoke exclusively to Salon Director, Amanda Fall, to get the lowdown on the move… KH Hair has been in Leicester over 40 years; why is now the time to move?

Leicester was one of the first Keith Hall salons to open back in the 1960s and since then the salon has grown from strength to strength. As we continue to grow, the time was right to find a new, bigger salon, which would be able to accommodate our expanding offer. Not only are we in beautiful new surrounds, but we’re also now on the ground floor which means easier access for all our clients and a more visual impact within the city.

So what does the new salon have to offer?

We’ve invested heavily in the new salon and that definitely shows when you walk through the door. We have carried out an extensive refurbishment of the existing building and completely transformed the space. Where bookshelves once stood in the old Waterstones, we now have the very latest salon equipment and beautiful furniture that we’ve personally sourced to create a contemporary environment befitting the service we offer at KH Hair. We also have a new dedicated beauty room which provides a tranquil escape from the city, and a beautiful reception area with relaxing armchairs for consultations. Everything in the salon is new and we worked with an architect to bring the space to life, so we’re very excited to now be unveiling it to the world!

KH Hair has been part of the landscape in Leicester for many years, why do you think the business has succeeded so well?

I would definitely attribute the success of all KH Hair salons to the ethos that stems from the founder of the company, Mr. Keith Hall. His objective was to nurture talent and create rising stars of today and the future. This has never changed. As new salons open, including our most recent one in Oadby which is a sister salon to Leicester, they become part of the extended family and we all work together to support each other and bring new ideas to the salon floor. Many of our stylists qualified at the KH Hair Training Academy, which not only provides the very 32 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

best education but also equips graduates with a customer service qualification to prepare them for life in a salon. We are all very passionate about what we do and looking after our clients is our number one priority.

KH Hair is one of the largest hairdressing groups in the country with 22 salons throughout the Midlands. KH Hair Leicester has opened its new salon at 25 Bowling Green Street, and KH Hair Oadby is situated on The Parade. Visit khhair.co.uk for more details.

RELAX INTO SPRING For spring 2016 there is a wide-ranging mix of trends in men’s fashion. From mohair threepiece suits, a vibrant use of colours for bold prints, a sporty take on the military theme, a variation on the camouflage desert style, nudes and lace for the androgynous look, to slim-striped co-ordinates. Whatever your style or occasion, there are many ways to add your own personality and flair to your attire. Whether you’re a fan on the pinstripe, the Prince of Wales check or subtle weaves, there has never been a better time to experiment with different fabrics and textures to suit your individuality. The bright blues of last year are replaced with more muted tones and earthy palates including monochrome greys, especially charcoal, and shades of khaki and emerald green. Even though suits will remain slim, the emphasis will be on a more relaxed and looser style than the recent super-slim / skin-tight look. Tailored garments make you feel more comfortable, so give your spring wardrobe a boost with a lightweight business suit or a crease-free wool blend when travelling. For a refined style to wear to the office, the grey checked suit is a great option. Wear with a crisp white shirt, a vibrant colourful tie and black lace-up shoes to complete the look. When you want to kick-back a little then you can’t go far wrong with a smart pair of chinos, a soft and lightweight blazer, a pastel-coloured shirt and a silk pocket handkerchief. This is the perfect attire for that after work drink or a weekend break in the country. 36 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

Spring is a great time of year to diversify your wardrobe and indulge in a more relaxed look to your attire. Enjoy the season!

Designer Tip

KEEPING TROPICAL TOPICAL!

There’s no doubt that this is the go to trend for those who like to make a statement. For those fearless enough to go totally tropical why not make furniture fabrics fruity or add an oversized leaf print to walls? That’s right, foget about feature walls, we’re talking taking that print all over! We love the Jungle paper from Cole and Sons, available in a range of colour options and a snip at £78 a roll. All a bit much? Well this trend is definitely not for everyone and we can understand that some people might not want to be starting at a room full of pineapples and jungle print all year so why not trying to incorporate a few accent pieces into your existing interior? A great way to do this is with colour – it’s amazing how adding a splash of lime or yellow to a neutral scheme can make things zing! Still too much? Then why not bring out the pot plants? Weeping figs, ferns and even the humble spider plant can add a touch of jungle fever to any interior.

1. Cushions using fabric from Harlequin, 2. Oliver Bonas Large Decorative Suitcase £70. 3.Brenne Pendant £80 BHS. 4. Heal’s 1810 Large Round Tray in Le Jardin D’Ete £40. 5. Amara Silken Favours - Watermelon Silk Shaped Cushion £95. 6. Pineapple Glass Vase £20 BHS. 7. Amara Silken Favours - Lemon Silk Shaped Cushion £95. 8. Flamingo Cocktail Sticks £1 Tiger. 9. Spotty Glass Platter £12 next. 10. Butterfly Home by Matthew Williamson Designer pink flamingo lamp £75, bedding from £40, cushions from £25,Debenhams.

Whether you go all out or keep things subtle it’s important to bring balance to any room. If you’re going with a jungle print on walls or furniture then make sure you keep your accessories secondary in your design statement and vice versa. Try thinking about your room as a journey and group accessories to create areas of interest as you move round it. dluxe-magazine.co.uk 39

THE MALTINGS IS STILL SERVING UP SPECTACULAR HOMES

Once a derelict eyesore, the former Maltings on Sileby’s High Street have been totally transformed over the past twelvemonths into twenty-one outstanding new properties – they’re perfect if you want urban style living in a picturesque semi-rural location and we are a bit in love.

With the development over 60% sold, you could be forgiven for thinking all the best plots have now gone, but that couldn’t be further from the truth, with some simply stunning homes now released including plot 22, a four-bedroom townhouse complete with its original brickwork emblazoned with ‘The Maltings’. The interior is no less unique with original cast iron beams and brick ceilings in a number of rooms. If apartment living is your thing, then plot 10 has real wow factor. This two-bedroom apartment has a ‘pyramid’ feature roof, which has no less than six generous skylights within the one room, flooding it with light and giving great views across the town and countryside. If you only want to pack your toothbrush then the showhome is now for sale at £275,000. With an on trend colour scheme of cool greys, the buyer will save thousands of pounds, as the property comes with all the furniture, carpets and tiled floors throughout.

Many of the industrial features in the grade II listed buildings have been preserved. As well as the facades, features such as original steel columns, beams and bolts have been retained and restored. Even new features, such as the metal windows, look like they have been there for decades while in fact they have been newly fabricated.

The Maltings is just a couple of minutes walk to Sileby train station with Leicester a mere 16-minute journey and Loughborough another 10 minutes. The company is also offering buyers the opportunity to take advantage of the government’s Help to Buy scheme.

VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN Volkswagen have given the formerly staid and solid Tiguan a sporty new look whilst increasing its size and reducing its weight for improved performance and efficiency. It’s also been reengineered to cope with trailer loads of up to 2,500 kg making it perfect for a horse box or for those who enjoy a spot of caravanning. TESLA MODEL X We’re already smitten with Tesla having tested the stunning Model S and we can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the stunning Model X. With all-wheel drive and a 90 kWh battery providing 257 miles of range, the all-electric Model X has seats for seven adults with room for all their luggage thanks to boot space both front and rear- there’s no engine remember. The Model X’s electric motors allow for

instantaneous power so it’s ludicrously fast, accelerating from zero to 60 miles per hour in as quick as 3.2 seconds. We’re in love with the futuristic Falcon Wing doors which allow easy access to second and third row seats from even a tight parking space. With only a foot of clearance on either side, Falcon Wing doors articulate smoothly up and out of the way and the side and overhead opening is so large that parents can buckle children in without ducking or straining. If the idea of all that technology seems terrifying Tesla offer an 8 year, infinite mile battery and drive unit warranty along with a 4 year, 50,000 mile limited warranty. The Model X is set to cost around £65,000.

LAND ROVER EVOQUE CONVERTIBLE At first the idea of a convertible SUV seems a little ridiculous but with the Evoque’s reputation as THE must have auto accessory for fashionistas and hipster types it should come as no surprise that Range Rover have launched a version that adopts even more ‘look at me’ styling tricks to an already successful formula. The ground breaking and distinctive

shape of the original Range Rover Evoque lends itself to an elegant convertible design perfectly and Range Rover have worked hard to ensure the Evoque’s distinctive profile remains with the roof up or down. The lightweight fabric hood stows in only 18 seconds, at speeds up to 30 mph. Its Z-fold mechanism lays flush with the rear bodywork for a sleek,

uncluttered appearance when lowered. The fabric roof is the longest and widest currently fitted to any vehicle on sale today. Prices start from £47,500. Find out more at Sturgess Land Rover, Narborough Road, Leicester. Tel. 0116 366 0308

LEAVE YOUR HEART IN SAN FRANCISCO With its stunning bay, iconic Golden Gate Bridge, eclectic mix of architecture and steep rolling hills traversed by cable cars, San Francisco is one of America’s most iconic city’s and has a vibe all of its own. Jonathan Fraser took a trip to the ‘City by the Bay’ with United Airlines and left his heart in San Francisco.

A mild year-round climate mean it’s no surprise that San Francisco is a popular leisure destination throughout the seasons, and with United Airlines it is easy for travellers from the Midlands and Central England to reach this great city. Other essential areas to explore include Haight Ashbury; the origin of San Francisco’s historic hippie subculture and China Town where gaudy furniture stores crammed with carnival glass mix with restaurants and gift stores with an Asian association. editor’s pick: FIVE OF THE BEST Spas iN THE WORLD

Whilst holidays are a break away from the stresses and strains of everyday life, sometimes you need a little bit more from your break. Spas provide the perfect escapism for those seeking serenity and pure relaxation of the mind and body. The popularity of spas has only grown over the decades and the bathing traditions and culture differ from country to country. To really make the most of the experience, immerse yourself in some serious pampering and book a treatment from the wide selection available on offer at the spas.

BUDAPEST Some refer to Budapest as the ‘City of Spas’ so it seems logical to start off our guide in this thermal epicentre. The city is built upon an abundancy of thermal and medicinal spring waters and has a spa history dating back to Roman times. Bathe in the healing waters of the Szechenyi Baths, the oldest in Budapest, with outdoor pools and palatial architecture. For a different experience, visit the Lukacs Baths for a night party with electro music, laser lights and plenty of cocktails! Take your pick from the 15 public thermal baths on offer in the city, some even house special pools for children, whirlpools and wave machines.

Another short hop from Delhi is Bangalore and one of the top spiritual spas in the world. Soukya is a dedicated treatment centre built by one of the leading holistic specialists in Asia, Dr Mathai, who lives at the spa and is on hand to share his secrets and advice. If

MADRID

After spending a few days exploring the lively Spanish city, make sure you find time to unwind and kick back in one of the luxury spas. The spas are a welcome sanctuary of peace and calmness away from the buzzing fiestas and bars this beautiful city is so infamous for. For a personalised spa experience, Wathermal Spa & Wellness offers a menu of over 100 treatments, performed to a backdrop of your own music played from your iPod or memory stick. Oriental spas are popular within the city with Chi Spas focusing on holistic treatments which drive energetic forces and restore harmony. Take in the sights of the city from a height in the Club Metropolitan spa which has roof top pools and a sun terrace and can be found in the heart of Madrid. Last but by no means least we can’t not mention the contemporary and super slick spa inside the Urso Hotel. Housed inside a former palace and surrounded by elegant boutiques and laid-back squares, the setting is perfection. With diamond dust facials available in the spa, need we say any more?

REYKJAVIK

We’d challenge you to find a more picturesque setting for a spa day than the stunning country of Iceland. The Blue Lagoon is one of Europe’s most famous geothermal spas and has gained the moniker of being one of the 25 Wonders of the World. There’s something very special about feeling sprinkles of snow falling on your nose whilst relaxing in a thermal pool amongst lava fields and snow topped mountains. The white silica mud and mineral salts gently exfoliate your skin and revitalise your body, and with water temperatures of over 37°C year-round, you won’t be chilly! Swimming costumes, towels and bath robes are available to hire from the Blue Lagoon to save you having to worry about finding space for those in your suitcase as well!

INDIA

Just one connecting flight away from Delhi, Goa houses some of the most premium and luxurious spas in the world. The spa culture has really taken off in India in recent years and the Sereno Spa in Goa was voted as the ‘World’s Number One Spa’ by the readers of Conde Nast Traveller. It is a complete wellness destination, set amidst the stunning and unspoiled beach front with an outdoor pavilion and garden. PAPPARDELLE OF SHALLOTS, WILD MUSHROOMS AND TARRAGON Serves 4 Prep time: 20 mins Cooking time: 15 minutes YOU’LL NEED: 8 Echalion (banana) shallots 300g pappardelle pasta 200g wild mushrooms 20g French tarragon 50ml Madeira 50ml olive oil 75g butter WHAT TO DO: Peel and dice the shallots into a medium size dice. Place a large pan of salted water on the stove for the pasta and bring to the boil. Sauté the shallots in the olive oil and, when almost cooked through, add the wild mushrooms. Allow to cook for 1 minute and then season with salt and pepper. Add the Madeira and allow it to reduce. To this mushroom mix, now add the chopped tarragon and butter. This should form a sauce that will coat the pasta. Once the pasta is cooked, drain and add directly to the pan with the shallots and mushrooms and serve. WHAT TO DO: Preheat oven to 200C/180C for a fan oven. Bring a pot of water to a boil and add the chopped potatoes. Cook at a controlled boil for 10 to 15 minutes, until potatoes are soft when poked with a fork. Strain potatoes and mash them with the almond milk until smooth and creamy adding sea salt to taste. Set mashed potatoes aside for later. In a large frying pan, heat the olive oil and gently fry the onion, carrots, and celery for about 8 minutes until just done.

BENtLEY’S Ladies Day

It’s not often you get invited to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Bentley factory and showroom in Crewe, so we were thrilled to accept when the offer came through recently for their Ladies Day event. Hosted by the lovely Nitisha Joshi of Bentley Leicester, guests included Business Success Coach, Cherie Concannon – who also did an inspirational talk; Jo Surley , Associate Director at RSM; Claire Darly, Partner at Shakespeares; Jo Garland, Owner of Garlands Leisure and Mythe Barn; Alison Beddow, Gas Superstore; Stevie Heafford, Mazaars; Sarah Franklin., Racing Driver; Janine Edwards, Principle Partner at St James Place Wealth Management; Anna Price, Director of The Rural Business Awards and Carey York from dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND. Tours of the factory are by appointment only and are usually reserved for customers. They get to see their car being made as it happens. It gave us a fascinating insight into this heritage brand, which continues to innovate. To this day, every Bentley is handmade, literally. Each car is different and entirely bespoke. After lunch we were then allowed to drive a Bentley around the Chester countryside and experience the amazing luxury and feel of driving such a prestigious car. The Real Thing @ Loughborough Town Hall

Sturgess Suzuki of Leicester was home to the very first ‘carmedy’ event held in a Leicester car showroom, recently. The aptly named “(S)miles Per Gallon” evening was part of the Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival 2016, which ran across Leicestershire. This event was unique to the festival and raised funds for both the Glenfield Hospital and Laura Centre. Former Leicester Mercury ‘New Comedian of the Year’ Jim Smallman, Carly Smallman and Lloyd Griffith performed on the night before headline act Matt Richardson took over the driving seat. Richardson is probably best known for ITV’s spin off show The Xtra Factor where he was partnered with Caroline Flack. Coming back to Leicester was a blast from the past for the Southern comedian, as his first solo show ‘Hometown Hero’, won Best New Show at the 2012 Leicester Comedy Festival, making this a night that comedy lovers didn’t want to miss. “Sturgess have been involved in the Comedy Festival for 3 years now, and have linked up with Suzuki who proudly provided five fully liveried 1.6-litre DDiS S-Cross SZ5 ALLGRIP crossovers to transport officials and comedians to the events throughout the duration of the festival. We thought it was high time we hosted our own event. We wanted to ensure our customers were going to have a great time, but also wanted to give back to the community”, said Nichola Moore, Marketing Manager at Sturgess. www.sturgessgroup.co.uk 52 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

But with an enormous number of jokes, luckily, as well as Watson’s customary flailing, chaotic audience interactions and all sorts of other fun.

This is based on a true story. An eccentric, grumpy, elderly lady parked her tatty old camper-van in the street where Alan Bennett (author) lived, much to the consternation of the neighbours. Wishing to be helpful, he allowed her to park the van on his drive, temporarily. The neighbours were not exactly delighted that the eyesore and the rather eccentric lady was still around, and she stayed around for quite a long time.

23rd- 28th May www.curveonline.co.uk

A Leicester charity which helps severely disabled children and their families is holding its biggest fundraising event of the year – a James Bond themed Gala Dinner and Auction on Saturday April 16 2016. Bamboozle, which uses theatre and music to create multi-sensory experiences for the most severely disabled children, is inviting anyone who wishes to support its work to attend the Diamonds Are Forever event at Leicester’s City Rooms. Individuals and businesses can also help the charity in its 21st year by donating items or experiences to be auctioned. Lots already include rugby tickets for outstanding seats to watch England versus Wales at Twickenham. One ‘money can’t buy’ auction item is a personal performance by the opera singer Amy Whittle, who will sing for the highest bidder, for instance at a birthday party or other family event. There will be dozens of other lots, some to be bid for in a silent auction and others will go under the auctioneer’s hammer during and after the three course dinner.

Set in America during the Great Depression, this classic play tells the story of George and Lennie, two migrant farm workers, who go in search of new beginnings, in the hope of attaining their shared dream: of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land and building a home. No strangers to trouble they soon find themselves reeling from the fall out of an innocent misunderstanding which spirals out of control. Two men, bound together by friendship, facing an earth-shattering climax.

paperwork WHERE DLUXE PLEASURE MEETS BUSINESS

Time to clear out your wardrobe and your workplace What am I going to wear today? When you work in the world of finance the choice is pretty easy, a suit with the only real question left to answer being what tie should you wear. And that’s where many of us begin to struggle – what tie? The problem is most of us hoard things like ties so something that should be a straight forward choice when starting your day can become a real dilemma. The instinct to hoard is in our biology, and I’m convinced that this hoarding mentality is even harder for business owners to overcome due to their need to plan and adapt for every eventuality; I mean, who knows when something could come in handy, right? In the world of behavioural finance we call this holding on a Sunk Cost Bias. This means that we are afraid to get rid of anything just “in case” we ever need it again in the future. If we go back to our wardrobe and look inside I’m sure you’ll find it’s not just your tie rail that’s groaning under the strain of items that will never again be useful: how about that old Depeche Mode T shirt that must have shrunk in the wash or those red trousers which seemed like a good idea at the time… In order to evaluate the true value of our wardrobes and indeed all of our assets we need to give each of them a score based on the amount of times we have worn them and then a score based on the amount of times we plan to use them in the future. When looking at our businesses and preparing them for sale or transferring them onto someone else we need to employ the same strategy; measure the parts of the business including plant, machinery, staff, contracts, customers, and intellectual property to name a few to build the enterprise value. Just like your closet you need to take a step back and say if someone else who is my size and went through my closet what would they keep. These are the items in your business that enhance and spend the time growing and cultivating. You’re trying to make sure that you maximise the things that will be a good addition to someone else or another company and reduce the things that will be of little use – that Bugs Bunny tie from the mid-nineties for one. In business the checklist of items that business owners think of as high value but business buyers actually see as detracting from the value of the business are: 58 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

Big contracts with major players that create great turn over but carry no profit or huge financial or production risk. Employees that have been with the company since the beginning. While people are essential there are a number that have been left because no one had the heart to move them along or they became outdated. Products that got the company to this point but may take it no further. Yes the Beta Max player may have made someone famous but where are they now? NOT having contracts in place for employees or providers. Having too many locations because you created a sprawling company to reach more clients or it was too expensive to move the machines or shut down the offices. Telling the buying company that they need to do... such as keep the name, retain specific employees or anything else they have to do; remember they are buying or taking control. Selling your business, just like clearing out your wardrobe can be an emotional thing evoking memories of the things that have gone before. The easiest way that I tell my clients to approach a business sale is to approach it by working through one section at a time and make sure that you can live with your decisions. Start with the ties, move on to the jumpers and then tackle the trousers. Yes there’ll be some things that you really do need to throw away but you may come across a few others that you can breathe new life into. later in life, and with this budget two years later, he has taken this a step further by giving a major lift to the ISA system. A new lifetime ISA has been announced that gives individuals under the age of 40 the ability to save up to £4,000 a year towards a house or pension, and this will form part of a new £20,000 ISA threshold from April 2017. Investors will receive £1 for every £4 they save which is added at the end of each tax year representing a 25% return per annum. Investors can withdraw their capital tax free (up to the value of £450,000) to purchase their first property, after the age of 60 or if terminally ill. Withdrawals at any other stage will result in a 25% charge but this will still mean your initial capital investment isn’t affected providing some flexibility.

Chancellor George Osborne didn’t disappoint and pulled out plenty of surprises in his annual budget on Wednesday, against a backdrop of global growth forecasts being cut across the board and slowing economic growth. Following months deliberating reforms in pension tax relief, and even the threat of pension savers losing out on tax free lump sum entitlements, there was little change in this regard and even some positives with the government looking to make public sector pensions more sustainable. There were also further tweaks to the pensions freedom legislation that improves the options available for minor dependents death benefits and which represent a fairer deal for those in ill health. When George Osborne first introduced pensions freedom it was seen by many as a positive step in encouraging more individuals to save for

If these are the main points for pension and investment savers there were further positives with the tax free personal allowance set to raise from April 2017 to £11,500 and the higher rate threshold to increase to £45,000, representing a £400 tax saving. A decrease in Capital Gains Tax will also reduce the tax investors pay on profits with the exception of buy to let landlords. John Freeman, in-house Financial Consultant at Newby Castleman (Financial Services) Limited, comments: “Overall this should be a budget that savers and investors will be pleased with, particularly considering the general sentiment of proposed changes over the last few weeks. As such, the government will be hoping that the overall effect is that the working population will feel looked after over the next few years despite the cut backs to services and spending to help reduce the deficit.”

Football and philanthropy: Total Motion team up with LCFC

CRITICAL ILLNESS CRISIS A new survey has revealed how one in three don’t know how they’d cope if they suffered a critical illness such as cancer, a heart attack or a stroke. Naturally such illnesses can be hugely stressful for both the person diagnosed and their families, but worries over how to continue paying the bills adds to the pressure, according to research from Nationwide Protection with around fifty percent of those asked stating that they would rely on savings to get by on despite the average savings pot being just £7,700 of those surveyed. While some people continue to receive all or part of their salary while off work, others are only entitled to statutory sick pay of just £88.45, posing a potential challenge to household budgets. However, just 14% of people currently have critical illness cover, according to the Nationwide survey. This is despite nearly three in five (57%) people having had an experience of critical illness – either themselves or through family and close friends. The research highlighted that only those over 55 years old were really in a position to rely on their savings with more than a quarter (28%) feeling they had ample money to cover themselves, compared to just four per cent of 18-24, six per cent of 25-34 and eight per cent of 34-44 year olds.

Leicester Racecourse’s 2016 Charities

Total Motion has teamed up with Leicester City Football Club to offer fans the chance to win a brand new car for a whole year. Why? Well, as nice as they are, there is also a purpose behind this amazing giveaway: the team aim to raise a staggering £50,000 by the end of this year’s football season in aid of two local charities. Simon Hill, Managing Director at Total Motion explained, “It’s always been important to us to support local businesses, charities and the community which we live and work in and is a personal passion of mine. But, we can’t do it alone and we’re relying on everybody getting behind us to raise this huge amount of money which is going to benefit so many people. And of course there’s the chance to win a pretty impressive prize!” Simon added, “Our ethos in business is to create a partnership with all our clients and we want to extend that to the wider community and working with LCFC gives us a great opportunity to do just that.” 100% of the donations raised from this amazing giveaway will be split between two Leicester based charities, Warning Zone and LCFC’s Foxes Foundation. Warning Zone aims to provide an interactive education in Leicester, which encourages young people to explore issues around risk, peer pressure, anti-social behavior and personal responsibility. LCFC Foxes Foundation work alongside their chosen charities to enrich lives of children & young adults in the surrounding Leicestershire area.

After the success of 2015, Leicester Racecourse is looking to share its achievements with the local community in 2016. As a way of giving back, the racecourse has selected Bamboozle Theatre, LOROS Hospice, and Hope Against Cancer as its chosen charities for 2016 and plans to raise money by hosting a number of different events. In addition to raising money for the chosen charities, General Manager, Rob Bracken is keen to promote a philanthropic flare to every event, further implementing the racecourse into the local community. Rob said: “Over the years, Leicester Racecourse has always been involved with charities in some way, shape or form, but we are now in a great position to really help by not only generating funds, but getting their voices heard” For more information about the exciting events that are taking place at Leicester Racecourse throughout 2016, visit the website: www.leicester-racecourse.com 60 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

Richard Grudgings, Operations Manager at Warning Zone commented: “Total Motion’s support of Warning Zone has been invaluable. A prize draw to win a car is an inspired idea and is already proving very popular. The main thing about Total Motion is that they actually understand what we are doing at Warning Zone and the important messages we are sending out. A huge thanks to Simon and his team for allowing Warning Zone to benefit as a charity from this exciting giveaway.” Leicester City Ambassador Alan Birchenall said: “It’s fantastic for the LCFC Foxes Foundation to receive such great support from a successful Leicestershire business. A free car for a year? What an amazing prize that is! “We started the Foundation to more effectively help worthy causes in the Leicestershire community and this is a great example of how much the business community has bought into it.” To enter the prize draw visit www.totalmotion.co.uk/donate and donate your £2. FOR BUSINESSMEN AND WOMEN WHO FEEL LIKE THEY’RE DROWNING IN A SEA OF UNHAPPY STAFF, UNMOTIVATED WORK SPACES AND UNINSPIRING ATMOSPHERES, CHERIE CONCANNON IS A BUSINESS LIFE BOAT. THE AUSTRALIAN HIGH PERFORMANCE LEADERSHIP COACH HAS A PROVEN TRACK WITH MANY HIGH CALIBER BUSINESSES OF GENERATING IMPRESSIVE RESULTS AND HELPING CLIENTS OF ALL INDUSTRIES ACHIEVE THEIR BUSINESS AND PERSONAL OBJECTIVES. IN SHORT, SHE HELPS BUSINESSES MAKE MORE MONEY AND COULD BE YOUR BEST BUSINESS INVESTMENT THIS NEW TAX YEAR…

garnered a string of high-profile Blue-Chip clients, including Coca Cola, Mattioli Woods and more.

In this day and age, it’s a proven fact that many of us decide to take on too much too fast. It’s easy to overlook the simplest things within your business, but Cherie Concannon, who bases her business in Desford, helps you to (re)focus your goals and aims, as well as help to build confidence within your workplace, whether it be on an individual or team basis and to make those goals a reality.

Concannon aims to achieve optimum efficiency and increased productivity with individuals, teams and organisations and has led her to develop a technique called RPO (Raising Performance in Operations), which has found particular traction in manufacturing and engineering industries. Her no-nonsense techniques have transformed hundreds of businesses, thousands of business people and saved millions of pounds.

Calling herself a ‘high performance leadership coach’, Cherie is eminently affable and immensely conversant in responding to the needs of business leaders - typically directors and senior managers - of private and public sector organisations, company owners and senior officials in public bodies and government. Her dynamic approach provides leaders (her clients) with the means to manage, mentor and manipulate scenarios, staff and outcomes to mutual success.

Not only can Cherie work with businesses on a one to one basis, she also takes her service out on tour, with her recently created Concannon Connection events. These (free of charge) monthly events are held at venues across Leicestershire – she’s hosted recently at Lumbers’ new showroom and Mattioli Woods’ office in Enderby – and give guests the chance to not only network but hear an inspirational talk from Cherie, which is topic-led and interspersed with real case-studies from some of her key clients, which have recently included Sara Andrews, the HR & Plant Director of Brush in Loughborough.

An individual or organisation will seek out Cherie’s services for many reasons including conflict or politics between colleagues; performance drops within individuals or teams; individuals who wish to take their next step on the ladder but aren’t sure where to start, as well as allowing people who work in high pressure circumstances to work through the stresses of their workload and manage it efficiently and effectively. Her approach has 62 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

“There are a number of reasons why people work with me, but essentially it boils down to the fact that they feel that they (or their company/career) are either going backwards, stuck or are keen to move forward and want guidance. For the individuals with whom I work, I am their champion, friend, guide, mentor, therapist, sounding board, teacher and ‘the person who knows a person who can,’ which means that if they need something I will work out how they can get it. I can sum up my objectives with each of my clients in a few words – progression, harmony, satisfaction and reward,” explains Cherie.

Saving tax with commercial property Every commercial property will have items within the purchase of the building from which capital allowances can be claimed. Often these items are never separately detailed in the purchase, but they are there! Providing that the value of these items is large enough, a capital allowance tax claim will be beneficial which could result in a tax refund or reduced tax liabilities in the future, says Tom Simpson of Accountants Torr Waterfield in Leicester. Capital allowances can be claimed for many types of these assets, some of the most common found within a property being: Electrical power and lighting , Lifts, Hot and cold water systems, Furnishings & fittings, Heating, Ventilation and air conditioning Fire alarms & security systems

What is the potential benefit?

The tax savings available will depend on your tax rate and the amount of ‘plant and machinery’ in the property you are buying or that you currently own. Recent local projects that our clients have benefitted from are: • the purchase and fit-out of warehouse and office premises in Leicester Forest East – tax saving £30,000 • the purchase of office premises in Aylestone – tax saving £22,500 • the purchase of 3 commercial units for let in Leicester city centre – tax saving £27,500

What should you do?

Speak to us if you own a property and would like to explore a retrospective capital allowance claim. If you are considering buying a commercial property we would recommend contacting us sooner rather than later to ensure that this tax claim can be maximised.

H OW TO NA I L T HE PERFECT INTERVIEW THE NUMBER OF JOB INTERVIEWS RISES AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR HIGHLIGHTING THAT NOT ONLY ARE PEOPLE LOOKING TO GIVE THEIR WARDROBES A SPRING CLEAN BUT ALSO THEIR CAREERS AS WELL! AFTER TAKING THE PLUNGE TO SEARCH FOR A NEW OPPORTUNITY THE NEXT BIG HURDLE IS THE DREADED INTERVIEW AND IN THIS COMPETITIVE CLIMATE IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT MANY APPLICANTS ARE WORRIED ABOUT HOW TO STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD. NEVER FEAR, HERE ARE TOP TIPS ON HOW TO NAIL THAT PERFECT INTERVIEW.

handshake.

PREPARATION IS KEY:

Communication is key. Make sure you know your CV and the job role inside out so you can give articulate responses to any questions. Don’t fall into the trap of trying to squeeze every great thing about yourself into your answers. Practice with a friend or colleague who can provide candid feedback allowing you to refine your answers accordingly.

First impressions are imperative but many people forget that the steps to achieving that great first impression begin long before you start your interview. First and foremost, making sure you’ve fully researched the company beforehand will ensure you stand out for all the right reasons. It might sound obvious but is often overlooked so allow enough time to research not only the company but also the job role, interviewer and their competitors before you attend. Secondly, never overestimate the importance of good planning. Double check the date, time and place of your interview in advance and ensure you’ve carefully planned your route taking into consideration the impact the time of day may have on traffic.

ARRIVE IN STYLE: You may not have sat down yet but your interview begins the second you enter the organisation. Here are my top three tips for helping create a great first impression from the minute you arrive: 1. Dress to impress. Even if you think the company you’re hoping to work for has a casual dress policy, it shows you’ve made an effort and you’d be surprised at the confidence boost you’ll get knowing you look professional. 2. Turn off your mobile phone! 3. Have confidence in yourself. Remember they’ve invited you to this interview so you’re obviously doing something right. Greet your interviewer with good eye contact, a warm smile and a firm 64 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

THE INTERVIEW ITSELF: Firstly, don’t forget that one of the most important things to do in an interview is listen. Interviewers want to see that candidates are engaged; When you’re nervous, you can concentrate so much on what you want to tell us that you actually forget to listen to what the interviewer is telling you. Make sure you fully understand what you are being asked and remember it’s perfectly acceptable to ask for clarification on anything you’re unsure about.

Finally, make sure you’ve got some questions on-hand - such as how you could help the company achieve its goals and what to expect from your first month in the role. Many candidates are so focussed on selling themselves that they overlook the fact that the interviewer will also be selling the role and company to them. Interviewers understand candidates may meet with multiple firms which is why questions form a critical part of the process.

THINGS TO AVOID: So you’ve done your research, arrived on time and are ready to impress with your insightful questions. Make sure you don’t undermine your hard work by committing an interview faux pas such as: Not being yourself and saying what you think the interviewer wants to hear instead of letting your personality shine through. A good team fit is vital; employers look for people who will join the existing staff seamlessly and complement the characters they already have”. • Avoid asking about salary unless absolutely necessary. Whilst renumeration is undoubtedly imporatant emplyeres look to see a candidate aspire to join their firm for development and if the focus of their questioning in on rewards, this can appear to be their sole driver.

How Secure is your Computer Data and Pictures? A Leicestershire-based computer firm has launched a brand new off-site back up service for valuable computer documents, pictures, and folders, ensuring you will never lose anything of importance on your computer again – and all for just £20 per month. “In this day and age, you’d be surprised how many businesses don’t have any kind of emergency plan for when things go wrong. By having a proper off-site back up, you not only take the risk out of the inevitable computer crash, but it means that because all of your sensitive data is safe, we can get you up and running again within minutes”, says Ian Kirkpatrick, MD of Tsunami Computers. “It’s particularly pertinent here in Leicestershire, as this is one of the country's blackspots when it comes to disaster recovery and backing up valuable computer data”. Established in 1997, Leicester-based firm Tsunami Computers specialises in supporting Small to Medium sized companies, but his experience is anything but small scale, having worked for global players such as Direct Line Insurance as well as, more locally, fitness giant, Rosemary Conley. Realising that small businesses may not be able to commit to an IT department or full time specialist of their own, Ian reacted to this clear gap in the market and set up Tsunami Computers, helping businesses bridge the gap between their knowledge and his. His initiative worked, and Ian has found great success with his clients, and through his clients’ recommendations. “Word of mouth recommendation has always been a reliable source of new clients for us,” explains Ian, “But we are rapidly expanding and now the time is right to let more people know how we can help them master their technology assets to improve their business and to ensure that we can help to decrease any major incidents regarding the loss of important data.” As recommendations have continued to grow, so has Tsunami Computers’ client base. They are now proud to boast over 100 clients needing IT support, with further major expansion planned over the next two years in which Ian aims to double the size of the business. Fundamental to the existing – and new – business is in providing a reliable IT resource for firms that don’t have one, supporting running systems that Tsunami Computers both maintains and develops, from routine stock control, to database management and a raft of other services, including domain hosting and contract hardware, at excellent value for money prices. The firm also offers service maintenance contracts and also provides vital support with mail filtering, firewall and on-line backup solutions. “Part of the Tsunami service is that we are happy to go out and help, no matter how often our client needs the support, all for the same fixed price. There are no hidden fees, so our clients know exactly where they stand.”

For more information regarding your IT needs, backing up important documents and much more, contact Tsunami Computers at 0333 344 0056 and they will send one of their experts out to you or your business.

Khuddadad was the first non-British person to receive a Victorian Cross and played an important role in the success of World War One. The British Army were not prepared for the might of the Germany army. Having suffered incredible losses Britain was running out of men, but where were they going to find men from? Recognising that there was an active army in Indian, and with India being part of the British Empire, it was decided to make use of South Asian troops and transport them to the front lines. “The problem was no one had taken into consideration that these men were from a completely different culture and even climate – not one of them had experienced weather like this or possessed the right type of uniforms let alone had any experience of mechanised warfare and the horror that were tanks.” says Ishi. What’s more the British army had a total different set up to what they Asian soldiers were used to; there was no understanding of customs or of the lifestyle they lived. Areas such as the different types of religions within the army were not taken into consideration.

Inspired by a true story of the First Battle of Ypres, Wipers tells the story of a group of Asian and British soldiers who seek refuge in an abandoned barn whilst a lone Indian soldier holds off advancing enemy troops. Coming to Curve from April 8th, Wipers examines how over the course of a single night, this group of men must confront their fears and find a way to come together if they are to survive. dluxe caught up with the play’s writer Ishy Din to hear more about the inspiration behind Wipers and to find out how a part time cab driver become an award winning playwright and professional writer. “School teachers said that I could have done better, but was I brought up in a town full of manufacturing and service industries and there were not many job opportunities” Ishy tells us as he stirs his latte. After he got married and had children cab driving became his only way of providing for his family, so how do you go from unsuccessful entrepreneur to award winning playwright? “I bought my daughter our first very own computer, but it just use to sit there, and it use to irk me that I’d spent so much money and I wasn’t getting any use out of the machine” he says. “I was in the cab one day and I heard an advert on radio five. The BBC was looking for short radio plays and I just thought ooh, I’ve got a computer that just sits there, and I’ve always been interested in stories and characters, Im going to write a play!” And write he did. His first play, about two young Pakistani kids off to their first football match was shortlisted by the BBC for broadcast. “When I sent it I didn’t tell a soul. I thought somebody in the BBC is going to read this and think what an idiot and put it straight in the bin” But unexpectedly eight weeks later Ishy was told his play would be produced and he got paid for it. And that was the ‘lightbulb’ moment; the point when he thought “What if I can actually do this? So I decided best way to 66 dluxe-magazine.co.uk

One thing the British Army did understand though was the fearsome reputation and code of honour of the South Asian soldiers; they would never leave an injured man or a dead body behind on the battle field. Khuddadad Khan was an Indian Solider who was fighting on the frontline, one night the German army unleashed themselves on his particular line. Many men’s lives were lost, “Khuddadad kept fighting, even though he was injured, he carried on fighting and firing his gun” Ishy tells us “for ten hours he managed to keep the Germanys at bay until, finally, the French reinforcements arrived and were able stop the Germans from advancing.” Khuddadad Khan survived and crawled back to the regiment during the night where then he was taken to hospital to recover, if it wasn’t for his bravery and his continuous fight the Germans could have advanced to the channel, England would have been invaded and the war would have been over.

find out was to write another short piece and before I knew it BBC drama were asking for me to write more.

Ishy’s research took him to Pakistan and the town that Khuddadad Khan came from. Here he came across statues, his medals and saw how honoured this heroic man was. But this is where Ishy started to struggle with “if it wasn’t his story, “how was I going to create an for his bravery interesting story with this character? To make a dramatic character he couldn’t and his continuous just be a really nice guy he needed shades of light and dark and there was fight the no way I was going to make him into Germans something he wasn’t just for my story. could have So that’s when I came up with the idea advanced to of the play taking place during the ten the channel, hours of Khuddadad Khan’s solitary stance.”

Ishy took part in writing courses and workshops across the country, it was during a course in London that he developed his first successful play Snookered. “I would spend my days on the course writing and my nights in the bar of the hostel; and I would watch a bunch of boys playing pool. I took my ideas into the writing class and got good feedback from my tutors so I developed the play and produced a script. The success of his script was a England surreal experience for him “suddenly I was a professional writer and my career would have had taken a dramatic shift. Snookered been invaded became a huge thing, got fantastic and the war reviews and opened up a lot of doors would have for me.”

The play starts with us joining a group of South Asian and British soldiers seek refuge in an abandoned barn. In the background we can hear the sound of Germany onslaught and Khuddadad been over.” Khan’s struggle. Over the course of One of these opened doors belonged his struggle this group of men must to Curve producer Suba Das, who confront their fears and find a way to was looking to commission some new work come together if they are to survive the night, around the involvement of South Asian troops let alone the war. “All throughout the research in World War I. “I have always been fascinated and the writing process of Wipers there have with the First World War and I knew very little been these moments of sheer beauty that really had been written about how the South Asian do just take your breath away and make you go army were drafted in to help out the British wow, where did that come from. I can’t wait to army.” The fact that little was written about see these moments come to life on stage.” this meant that Ishy had to do a lot of research to bring the play to life and it was during his Wipers By Ishy Din is at Curve from research that he came across a solider called 8-23rd April.
