4 it’s our birthday and we’re officially a grown up...
twenty years strong Oh my days we feel so old! Twenty years ago the idea for a midlands magazine aimed at both the club kids and the outcasts, the beat boys and the banjie girls, the lost boys and the fairytale dreamers was born. But what should we call it? The 69 mantle came from the ying and yang symbol of balance. We wanted to create something that appealed to both men and women, to black and white and to gay and straight audiences that truly refelected the clubs and the world that we were living in, the dawning of a metrosexual, all encompassing world. Some people didn’t get it and that was the point. Those that did revelled in it. A lot has changed in twenty years. Equality is not a novelty, well mostly. But there is still a long, long way to go. As for Sixty9° we’re still doing what we do; letting you know what’s amazing about the midlands and beyond. Now we do it in print, online and via social media so there’s even more ways to take a bite of Sixty9°. To celebrate twenty years of Sixty9° we’re going to be scouring our archives and sharing some old skool love by re-releasing some of the best articles, interviews with the likes of Florence and the Machine, Kylie Minogue, Moby, Carl Cox, Paul Oakenfold, Leftfield, Lisa Lashes, Faithless, Tiny Tempah and even a talking cat that solved problems. We’ll be posting these online at www.69-degrees.co.uk and @sixty9 on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook alongside some amazing old photogalleries from Midland’s clubland so get tagging, liking and sharing to the max. Thanks for supporting us over the last twenty years. With love, Sixty9°

MUA Zoe Taylor ON CHANEL’s Fall/Winter Beauty Collection
FALLING FOR CHANEL Black and White; they’re the ultimate symbolic colours of Chanel, SIXTY9°’s Francesca Arculeo sat down with Make-up artist and Chanel Beauty ambassador Zoe Taylor to find out how these classic tones have been reinterpreted for the brand’s latest beauty collection. “The thing about the collection is, whilst it is black and white, it’s not your standard black and white and so it makes it really wearable!” The collection comprises of eight products with a number of them in limited edition shades and can easily be identified for the eyes, lips and nails. “My favourite products are the Ombre Première Top Coats. They create this incredible kind-of liquid metal finish and work great on top of a smokey eye! These are probably my most favourite because it’s a formula we haven’t seen before at Chanel and it’s very unusual because you cannot use a brush with it, you have to use your fingers. They are so heavenly to use!” Zoe adds. A staple in most makeup bags, The Le Volume Ultra-Noir De Chanel (RRP £28) mascara is sure to become a cult classic as Zoe declares “it makes your lashes look like they’re fake”. Stylo Yeux Waterproof (RRP £22) in Blanc Graphic took us by surprise. A soft white eyeliner that can be worn everyday on the waterline or to create bold graphic looks. “You can also use as an eyeshadow base to amplify your look” Zoe enlightens. To complete a graphic or smokey eye, two new shades of Rouge Coco Gloss (RRP £28) add dramatic shine, and bold but muted shades of Rouge Allure Liquid Powder (RRP £31) and Rouge Allure Velvet Extrême (RRP £31) add timeless glamour. “The lipsticks are seriously matte which is really exciting, they are beautiful.” For finishing touches there are two limited edition additions to Chanel’s classic LE VERNIS (RRP £22) in intense black and optic white to round off the graphic collection. “We are moving into a different territory of makeup, we’re seeing that
there are no boundaries. I can create something incredibly unusual and editorial with this but I can also do makeup on my mum and it look really pretty. There are no boundaries and it’s not frightening. The Noir Et Blanc De Chanel collection is available at the best beauty counters and www.chanel.com

Metronomy
14 and booked studio time. I think what you need to do basically is start by finding the feeling or the thing that is going to give you enough creative mileage to make a record. I think it must be different for a lot of people. I think if you want to make a record that has some sort of integrity, from super pop stuff to jazz, to anywhere you want to go, there has to be a feeling for the record that you have to try and get to. According to Wikipedia, which means it’s probably wrong, this is Metronomy’s twentieth year, is that right?
What are we interrupting you doing today? I’m on holiday. Well It’s not really a holiday, it’s half a holiday. Have you had a full-on Summer this year, what with the album release? We’ve sort of held off doing some of the bigger festivals until next year to be honest but we’re still doing loads and of course with the album, there is lots going on. It’s been incredibly busy! You’ve also directed the last two videos as well, so you’ve crammed that in also haven’t you? Yeah, I think it’s great. You know when you’re stressed out when you’re not organised, well I’ve been quite organised, so I haven’t felt too manic. When did you start www.69-degrees.co.uk
working on the album? I guess I started some of the songs probably around three or four years ago and I was working on a Robyn record and we were touring. It probably wasn’t until this time last year that I actually started just concentrating on the Metronomy record. It starts off as a big thing and then the real finishing off stage takes place over eight months or something like that. You say you’re a planner, how do you plan a Metronomy album? Do you have a set day and say like right today I’m going to start writing and I’m going to do that for two weeks or do you book studio time and see what happens? Well you can do it like that, I’ve done it like that before
I mean, it’s actually not wrong, it’s maybe more misleading. Twenty years ago, I was a sixteen-year-old boy just making beats and stuff like that, I’d probably just come up with the name so it was probably twenty years ago that I thought of the name. But the first album came out in 2005 I think, so it’s not ancient like that. It’s quite a hefty album, seventeen tracks Yeah, there are seventeen tracks but some of them you can’t sing along to, some are more like an interlude sort of thing. It’s intentionally quite a long record. I miss interludes in albums I think it’s interesting that with streaming there is more space for that interlude kind of stuff. If you’re making playlists or whatever, it helps break it up and makes it
15 feel a bit different. I think, weirdly, people will start to get more interludey. Going back to the first album and relistening to that, the majority of the tracks are instrumentally led aren’t they? Is that very much a Metronomy thing do you think, is it that sometimes words really aren’t necessary? I dunno. I’ve been trying to explain it recently that for me there is an interesting thing that happens when you’re just listening to instrumental music. Even if it’s electronic or if it’s someone performing on a trumpet or something, it’s just this idea of conveying emotion but without using words, I find that kind of nice. It’s something that doesn’t rely on language or someone speaking a particular language and I also think that people kind of scrutinise it in terms of grammar. When lyrics do come into play, a lot of what you write comes across as auto biographical, is that right, do you plunder your own life for song writing? I mean it’s not autobiographical. What I’ve learnt about the way that I write is that I try to use language and stories that I think people can listen to and understand in quite a kind of literal way. I think they’re written in a way that people can quite easily understand what it’s about and what is going on. It’s quite often describing an event and I guess it always comes from
something that is true and that I feel like is a nice feeling to write about and something I’ve experienced. It gets to the point where that thought is just a starting point, that initial idea. It can then become something that is total fantasy. So although It feels kind of autobiographical, that’s only the starting point. The truth is, I’ve been really happy in a relationship for the last ten years so any story about that kind of stuff is plundering very old feelings or situations and then kind of adding to it and embellishing it a bit. Does it make writing harder; people making that assumption? Does it sway your song writing? No, it doesn’t because I think in the end, as long as it’s not incriminating, as long as I’m not writing a song about having some weapons in my house or something. You can read books and you can watch films and you can separate the actor from the part and all that stuff and you can understand that JK Rowling isn’t a boy wizard or whatever. It’s easier in other formats for people to suspend their disbelief a bit. When you’re making music and you’re using these instruments that are traditional and you’re part of this tradition of storytelling and singing about yourself, I wouldn’t try and avoid being misunderstood. Maybe songs just seem so much more personal. You’re taking this album on tour this Autumn as
well. The music is very performative, is that an intentional thing from the start? Maybe when you’re writing a song, you’re kind of subconsciously thinking about that. I would always try and make stuff that feels cool and genuine and coming from the right place without necessarily worrying about how it’s performed. The thing we’ve kind of done with live stuff is that we’ve decided it is its own thing. If you go to a gig you shouldn’t come expecting for it to sound exactly the same as the record or comparing it to the record, it’s something else. If you want it to sound like the record, then the record is the best thing to listen to. The live stuff becomes about us all and it’s much more of an inclusive gang sort of thing. What’s your favourite song to perform live? My favourite new song is called Insecurity, I’m enjoying playing that live and from the new album I think ‘Insecurity’ will be quite a good one, hopefully people will like that song. I think there are quite a few on the album, there’s another song called ‘Upset My Girlfriend’ that I hope becomes a sing along hook. ‘Metronomy Forever’ is available to download and stream now. A limited edition deluxe bonus triple-vinyl edition will also available from www. metronomy.co.uk and select indie shops.

JOE FRASER “On the Rings I had a new strength move, so I was very happy to get that done and stick my dismount.” Joe Fraser said this just after being crowned the English all round gymnastics champion for the fifth time earlier this year, it’s a pretty modest statement for a 20-year old Brummy lad who is at the absolute top of his game. His ambition and skill earned him the Sky Sports Scholarship, a position that stands him alongside some of the most exciting young talents in the country, but he has proved time and time again how much he deserves it. Growing up in Edgbaston, Joe has always dreamed of performing in a big venue in front of a home crowd. The 2022 Commonwealth Games may be his chance to live that dream, as the gymnastics is to be held in the Birmingham Arena. But Joe is well aware he has to work hard to be at the top of his game to get there. In 2018 he suffered a devastating ankle ligament injury that required surgery and dashed his hopes of competing in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. His recovery has been arduous but he’s reaping the rewards now, looking better than ever.
ANGER
That new strength move on the rings that he so casually mentions, it’s madness. I’m sure to the trained eye it’s a feat of great precision, skill and delicacy. To the untrained eye (i.e. mine and probably yours) it’s absolutely bonkers. Imagine someone froze Superman midfligh, just glued him to two rings and left him there, keeping his whole body perfectly flat and still, for ages. Now come to the terms with the fact that he’s not Superman and he’s not frozen, he’s just an incredibly talented, mortal 20-year old. Oh, and he does double flip corkscrew to dismount and absolutely sticks the landing.
That’s Joe Fraser. He’s great. You’ll hear more about him at the 2022 RICARDO DOMINGOS LOOK AT WHO’S MAKING AN IMPACT Commonwealth Games I’m sure.

NICK CUMMINGS “I’m somebody who believes I can” This is Nick. Not only is Nick currently undertaking a PhD in History at the Univeristy of Leicester, he’s also an Olympic athlete representing Team GB in Wheelchair Rugby, which is absolutely mad to watch. But more on that later. At age nineteen Nick contracted Meningococcal Septicaemia, an illness which is as terrifying www.69-degrees.co.uk
as the name suggests, causing his limbs to weaken. It’s a devastating thing to happen at such a young age, but during his rehabilitation Nick took up Wheelchair Rugby and made the absolute most of it. Having defended his Division One title earlier in the year with Leicester Tigers (after going a whole season undefeated) Nick represented Great Britain once again in the 2019 IWRF
European Championship this Summer. So, Wheelchair Rugby. If you haven’t already seen any, give it a watch. It’s mad. Played on a wooden court, the players zip around with lightning speed and agility, twisting and turning their modified wheelchairs with an unbelievable elegance. All this while being repeatedly smashed into. Remember how I said the chairs were modified? They’re designed both to hit harder and take harder hits, and boy do they need it. Have a watch of the GB vs. Australia match highlights from May. It takes about 10 minutes before the pristine Basketball court they are using gets absolutely covered in skid marks. The big hits are huge, metallic thuds that echo around the room and put you on the edge of your seat. If you’ve not seen a live match then you really are missing a trick, expecially as one of Wheelchair Rugby’s biggest tournaments; the King Power Wheelchair Rugby Quad Nations, takes place in Leicester every year and sees the very best players from across the globe take part. Keep an eye out for the next tournament in early 2020.

KATIE BOULTER
Photo: Lawn Tennis Association “Travelling the world to hit a fluffy yellow thing” That’s Katie Boulter’s Twitter bio. She’s a 22-year-old, world class tennis player from a little village in Leicester by the name of Woodhouse Eaves. While this may be the last place you would expect to find a world class tennis player, it may help to explain the modesty of that Twitter bio. Back in February, Boulter reached a career high ranking of 82nd in the world, she’s won five singles and four doubles on the ITF Women’s Circuit and has qualified for multiple majors. But hey, to her it’s all just hitting “a fluffy yellow thing”. Boulter has enjoyed a steady rise, with consistency showing that she is one to watch for the
future. With a tennis player’s blood already in her veins (Boulter’s mother represented Great Britain) she began playing at just five years old, saying that much of her motivation came from beating her older brother. Three years later and she was already representing Great Britain; at eleven she won the Lemon Bowl tournament in Rome; at fourteen was a finalist in Orange Bowl Championship in Florida. Honestly, the list goes on and on. There’s plenty more to say about Katie. About how she battled back from a fatigue illness which put her out of competition for a year. About how she fought back to go up against Serena Williams and Roger Federer. But let me just leave you with this;
look up Boulter’s lob shot against Slovakia in the Federation Cup. She returns a savage serve before having to dash across court to return again. She leans down for the backhand and she’s got everyone convinced she’s going to hammer it down the line. Instead she pulls off a stunning lob shot, from one by-line to the other. It’s an impossible shot, and if that doesn’t convince you how good she is, nothing will. Boulter is supported by the LTA’s Pro Scholarship Programme, which provides world class coaching, physio, lifestyle, wellbeing and fitness support for players aged 16 to 24 who have the greatest potential to reach the world top 100 within five years.

Summer may be over but fear not, the streets are still as bright and colourful as ever! I spotted double denim, bold print clashes and street wear mixed with formal wear. Trainers have been reimagined with an old school retro twist, classic biker jackets and blazers are now oversized, harping back to the 80s. Utility has well and truly taken off, snakeskin has replaced leopard print and hair accessories are a big story, with giant hair clips adding a touch of glamour to any look. Autumn has never looked so good!

BEAUTY HACKS
make your own ECO FRIENDLY vegan body scrub
Benzoyl Peroxid, Dihydroxyacetone, Glycerin and Emollient – are just some of the scary ingredients contained in our skincare products. They claim to work wonders on our skin and often come in beautiful packaging, along with a hefty price tag writes Maddy Ireland. But with slow-beauty on the rise, and an increasing number of women keen to incorporate a waste-free regime, foraging could be the next big sustainable trend. Is foraging the new wave of an eco-friendly vegan skincare revolution? Foraging simply involves sourcing ingredients from the wild, usually for food, but in this instance it's for skincare. There is an abundance of natural ingredients with skincare benefits in the woodlands, and you can combine them with other natural sources to create a new, organic treat for your face or body. Natural ingredients grow by season, so you often can't forage the same stuff all year round. www.69-degrees.co.uk
We’re not suggesting for you to go all Bear Grylls on us, which is why we have combined a list of all the ingredients you can source in the shops this Autumn. With everyone becoming more socially aware of the ingredients within beauty products, why not try ditching products with nasty chemicals and create your own homemade exfoliating scrub? This way you know exactly what you are putting on your face. A walnut body scrub is a perfect addition to your autumn skincare routine. Designed to increase blood circulation, remove dead skin cells, smooth and brighten your complexion – just what you need as the colder months start to move in. YOU WILL NEED: 12 walnuts 30g refined Shea butter 30g almond oil 5g of Vitamin E 5 drops of Rosehip oil
METHOD: Firstly, take the shells off of the walnuts. Next, grind the walnuts into tiny particles. You can either do this in a pestle and mortar, by putting the nuts into a canvas bag and hitting it with a rolling pin or by using a blender. Leave to the side. Place all of the shea butter with the almond oil into a heat proof bowl and place into a pan of water (just as you would to melt chocolate). Turn the heat to a low temperature and watch until the shea butter melts down into the oil. When the mixture is entirely melted, remove from heat and allow to set and go hard. You can pop it in the fridge to speed things up. Grab a big wooden spoon and mix until the product turns fluffy. You can now add in your crushed-up walnuts, Vitamin E and Rosehip oil. Spoon into a dark glass pot to keep fresh. Enjoy marvellously soft skin with your new walnut scrub!

Willkommen to Vienna
Vienna, Austria’s glorious capital is located on the banks of the mighty River Danube and close to the borders of Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Vienna’s historic centre features imposing castles, opulent buildings reflecting Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architectural styles, beautiful verdant parks, and the late 19th century Ringstraße. The centre of Vienna was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 and in 2018 a study undertaken by the Economist Intelligence Unit, ranked the city as the best in the world for its quality of life. The city, which is crammed with art museums, places of interest and popular attractions continues to draw more than 6.8 million tourists every year writes, Rebecca Underwood. My explorations of Vienna’s rich cultural heritage began at the dazzling Hofburg Palace, which was the centre of the Habsburg monarchy from 1273 to 1918 and includes the Imperial Treasury where the Imperial Crown of www.69-degrees.co.uk
the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, which dates back to the 10th century, is displayed. The glittering treasures include the Imperial Austrian Crown, which was made for the Emperor Rudolf II in 1602, the Imperial Cross, the Holy Lance and an extensive collection of elaborate coronation vestments. Also on display is one of the world’s largest emeralds and of course it is absolutely mesmerising. The Hofburg Palace is also the principal venue for the world famous Silvesterball, which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary on 31 December this year. Keen to develop a deeper understanding of the Habsburgs I headed for the Imperial Apartments, which served as the residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Elisabeth, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, who was affectionately known as Sisi. The 24 rooms offer the visitor an opportunity to take a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era and with 24 rooms crammed with twinkling crystal chandeliers, beautiful furniture, statues and works of art, there is much to admire. The Sisi
Museum, also within the Hofburg complex, celebrates the life of Empress Elisabeth and exhibits include many of her personal possessions and portraits, which capture her beauty. Seeking a place to relax, I headed for another popular attraction, which is a short stroll away, within the Hofburg Palace complex. The Imperial Butterfly House, which was once a retreat for Emperor Franz Josef I and Sisi, the Empress of Austria, is a tropical oasis, housed within a beautiful Art Noveau palm house, provides the ideal spot to take a seat when a busy itinerary affects the feet. 400 free flying, colourful
butterflies flutter around past waterfalls, settling on exotic plants and enticing all visitors. Due to its impressive musical legacy, which stretches from the era of Viennese Classicism up to the beginning of the 20th century, Vienna is known as the city of music and has been home to many celebrated composers of international recognition. Birthplace of Schubert, Strauss, Schoenberg and Berg, Vienna also became home to Beethoven, Haydn, Brahms, Mahler and Mozart. There is a wide selection of hotels in Vienna but for those seeking space, peace and privacy the Aparthotel Adagio is
ideal. The property is located on Uraniastrasse beside the Danube with tram stops right outside and the historic city centre is within walking distance. Facilities include a fitness centre, a sauna, private indoor parking, complimentary Wifi and a self-service laundry room.
Founded in 1137, the cathedral is an outstanding example of Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles and features a multi-coloured opulent roof consisting of 230,000 glazed, patterned tiles, which, when flooded in golden sunlight is a magnificent spectacle. On the south side, there is a mosaic of the double-headed eagle which represents the empire, once ruled by the Habsburgs. St Stephen’s Cathedral is the resting place of Frederick III, the first Emperor of the House of Habsburg. His tomb is adorned with 240 statues and is a fine example of medieval workmanship. The cathedral, which was constructed in limestone, soars 446 feet high and the south bell tower is a principal feature in Vienna’s skyline. It is said that the composer Beethoven realised the extent of his deafness when he noticed birds flying out of the bell tower and did not hear the bells ringing.
Strolling back towards my hotel and feeling peckish I spotted the Hard Rock Café on Rotenturmstraße. I was swiftly My spacious one bedroom airescorted to a table in the British conditioned apartment featured section and as I devoured the a huge balcony overlooking the delicious baby back ribs and Danube and it was the ideal spot to sipped on my sparkling blackberry relax with a tipple after a full day of sangria I tried, to no avail, to avoid explorations. For generations, African men have gathered in barber shops to discuss the world. Newsroom, political platform, local hotspot, confession box and preacher-pulpit barber shops are places where the banter can be barbed and the truth is always telling. The world of these barber shops comes to life in the globally acclaimed, Barber Shop Chronicles (26 – 28 September). Written by Inua Ellams, Barber Shop Chronicles is a razor-sharp insight into notions of masculinity, fatherhood, politics and identity. Spanning six cities around the globe across one day, the show reveals the shared experience of the barber shop. It’s a joyous, soulful and life-affirming play that makes the average white British male’s belief that you simply go in for a haircut decidedly dreary. Men, money and microphones will be fought over in a new loving and irreverent all-female adaptation of Jane Austen’s unrivalled literary classic, Pride And Prejudice* (*sort of) (15 October – 2 November). A fantastic adaptation like no other, this new retelling of a literary classic draws on over two-hundred years of romantic pop history to deliver a unique take on a beloved novel. The story is told from the point of view of six young women. These are the women who empty the chamber pots and sweep ash from the grate; the overlooked and the undervalued making sure those above stairs find their happy-ending. Of course, they’ve always been running the show - after all ‘you can’t have a whirlwind romance without clean bedding’ – but tonight, the servants are also playing every part. Let the ruthless match-making begin! There’s also a feast of newness to discover in Marmalade, The REP’s bar and restaurant with new menus, cocktails, independently sourced coffee and cake plus a new terrace on the re-developed Centenary Square. Check it out! To find out more and to book tickets head to birmingham-rep.co.uk.

READ: Toil & Trouble BY AUGUSTEN BURROUGHS If you haven’t read an Augusten Burroughs book, then go out immediately and get Running With Scissors. I mean it, right now. If you have read it then hurrahyou’re in for a treat as there is more from this number one New York Times bestselling author, another stunning memoir that is tender, touching...and just a little spooky. For as long as Augusten Burroughs could remember, he knew things he shouldn’t have known and manifested things that shouldn’t have come to pass. His mother reassured him that it was all perfectly normal as he was descended from a long line of witches. It was a bond that he and his mother shared-until the day she left him in the care of her psychiatrist to be raised in his family (but that’s a whole other story). After that, Augusten was on his own…

REVIEW...MArmalade@ The Rep sunshine, then Marmalade is the perfect place to go. Set in the newly revamped Centenary Square, it’s the perfect place to watch the brilliant new water feature that is just outside the restaurant. With contemporary outdoor seating and staff always on hand to help with any needs – this is the spot tp people watch.
The hottest day of the year so far was the perfect setting for a relaxed cocktails and canapes soiree at Birmingham’s REP, celebrating the launch of the new-look Marmalade bar and restaurant says Madeleine Ireland. The Food We were first greeted by wonderful trays of canapes featuring some unique flavours of shredded duck and marmalade – it worked amazingly well. For those that fancied a meat free option there were vegan mini tartlets with a refreshing salsa. Marmalade also offer a range of small plates that are perfect for a light bite before a theatre showing or simply as a starter. We were loving how well catered the team were to all dietary requirements, from various meat options, fish, even vegan and gluten free. One of our personal favourites was a Fava Bean Patty with a tomatillo chutney and dukka spices. In every bite you could taste each individual ingredient working together to create a divine sensuous experience. When they brought the mains

out, the food was an indulgence for the senses. Sweet Potato Thai curry, mange tout, bok choi, shiitake mushrooms, coconut crisp & fragrant rice (both vegan and gluten free) as well as Fillet of Sea Bass with potato and spring onions ragout & sauce vierge the list would go on forever. Of course, we had to save the best meal until last, the scrumptious desserts were good enough to convince anyone to ditch the diet! From the likes of Chocolate & Coffee Mousse with Chantilly cream and pecan praline, gluten free Lemon Tart with lime zest and raspberry sorbet and Blueberry Frangipane with vanilla crème fraiche – what’s not to love?!
The Interior Rustic wooden tables and copper hanging lights was a modern vibe for the newly refurbished restaurant. Marmalade have fitted beautifully printed feature walls – perfect for those that want to get the perfect snap for Instagram - not to mention all the quirky accessories! You can relax into the large Chesterfield style booths, or big blue armchairs comfort is key at Marmalade. The Verdict: Now under control of the inhouse REP team, it’s their firm intention to make Marmalade a destination bar and restaurant in its own right; a place that’s good enough to go to irrespective of whether you are going to the theatre or not. They’ve got all the right ingredients and we think
If you fancy treating yourself or a loved one to a glorious afternoon at the theatre, why not try Marmalade’s afternoon tea packages? For £12.95 you can have an assortment of sandwiches, cakes and scones – not to mention vegan alternatives to the package, which were delicious!
they’ve pulled it off – especially with its incredible location overlooking the fountains of Centenary Square. A real sweet treat.

LAST WORD
Why it’s about time we celebrated a queer boy from a council estate Ever heard of Joe Orton? If you have then you’ll already love his work. If you haven’t then you’ll have felt his influence in pretty much every theatre production, screen play and modern feature film of the last fifty years and now’s a plan to remember him in the centre of Leicester’s Cultural Quarter, Orton Square. A subversive icon, Orton shocked, outraged, and amused audiences with his scandalous black comedies such as Loot, Entertaining Mr Sloane and What the Butler Saw. His career, although short lived, was incredibly significant, influencing future generations of writers, so much so that his unique style has given rise to the adjective ‘Ortonesque’ to describe work that blends the comic and the macabre. His life, as revealed in his diaries, (a must read if ever there was one) was as scandalous as his plays, and he died tragically at the age of 34, murdered by his lover, Kenneth Halliwell, in 1967. One of the first writers to put LGBT characters on stage, this Queer boy from a Leicester Council Estate rode roughshod over the establishment, partied with royalty and even wrote a film for The Beatles. “A statue of Joe will ensure that a great writer is not forgotten, raise awareness of Leicester’s rich literary heritage and serve as an inspirational reminder that talent is everywhere and art is for everyone, regardless of social background or circumstance”says Leonie Orton and it’s an opinion shared by some real Hollywood heavyweights including Sir Ian McKellen and Alec Baldwin as well as a host of famous authors, comedians and actors who are all lending their weight to the fundraising campaign. To find out more about the project and Joe’s work or to support the campaign and be a #friendofjoe visit www.spacehive.com/joe-orton-statue-appeal or you can follow the @Joe OrtonStatueAppeal on Twitter and Instagram
