2018: Reimagining Health Dear friends, For far too many families in New York City, health is dependent on their zip code, how much money they earn, the color of their skin, their gender, or their immigration status. The facts bear out the significant health inequities that exist in one of the richest and most racially diverse cities in the world. New Yorkers living in the poorest neighborhoods die four years earlier than those residing in wealthier communities. One in five young women do not have access to reproductive health care simply because they are poor. Infant mortality among low-income women of color is twice the national average. And, more than one-quarter of New Yorkers living below the poverty line smoke. For over 60 years, Public Health Solutions (PHS) has worked to improve the health of marginalized families in NYC by helping them build pathways to achieve their potential. We put food on the table; enroll families in health insurance; assist mothers in moving their lives forward while supporting the health of their children; reduce unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections among teenagers; build smoke-free communities, and forge critical partnerships to help end health epidemics like AIDS. So, what is next? PHS is “reimagining health in three major areas that affect health equity. We are establishing innovative programs to reduce health and developmental disparities among low-income children. We are building stronger, more robust community partnerships that connect underserved women to maternal health programs and food and nutrition benefits. And, we are advocating against tobacco companies marketing to low-income minorities and government attempts to hinder immigrant families’ access to health. We understand what is at stake. We know you do, too. Together, we are helping to save lives, reduce medical costs, and improve the quality of life of New Yorkers most in need. We thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,
Deborah Sale Barbara Green Lisa David Board Chair Incoming Board Chair President and CEO

Our Stories “
I always wanted to get an education and build a career. But I had to stop going to college to support my mom. Then I got pregnant and my life changed.
I never thought I would have this in me, but I got my degree and a good paying job. My daughter is very smart. She is the best thing in the world…she is my happiness. – Kiara, graduate of Public Health Solutions’ Nurse-Family Partnership® program
“
In my second month, I knew I needed guidance and found my way to Public Health Solutions’ Nurse Family Partnership® program. My nurse helped me in so many ways. Not only is my daughter healthy and thriving, but my nurse taught me that my goals were still there and my baby was not stopping me from pursuing them.
Public Health Solutions’ home-visiting programs – including Nurse-Family Partnership®, Healthy Families, Healthy Start, and CoMadres – empower mothers to transform their lives and create better futures for their children and themselves.

When I started high school, I saw a lot of students smoking and vaping. I thought if there is a way that I can tell people that they [the tobacco industry] is targeting us, I would join the movement. I got involved with PHS’ NYC Smoke-Free Program in my junior year to get the word out in schools and reach out to legislators. I never saw myself in a leadership role, but here I am!
Our NYC Smoke-Free program works to protect the health of New Yorkers through tobacco control policy, advocacy and education. Our efforts this past year have resulted in:
Going forward, PHS’ tobacco control work is focusing on eliminating youth access to electronic cigarettes.

In the early 90s, HIV was a certain death sentence. Now we are working in a universe where we have a chronic disease. Realizing that we’re not about disease anymore, but about health allows us to do innovative programming to create not just a theory to end the epidemic, but a blueprint to do so. Public Health Solutions does a very important thing. They help us get our resources to the places they need to go, so folks in the community can actually do the work. Without that foot in the field, we are never going to do well with HIV.
