[strategies|to|help] [children] 3 Things Technique Give children the opportunity to think of 3 good things about their day. This leaves them with some positivity at the end of their day when they may be feeling like nothing has gone right. It could be a kind word from their sibling, or a song they sang along to in the car. They will hopefully think of at least one postive thing themselves which can be followed by a little reminder about other good moments. Externalisation - Worry Monsters When a child is feeling something (anger, sadness, worry) it can feel like they’ve been taken over. Parents can draw this as a monster and talk about what it looks like - make some of the characteristics funny so it seems less scary (eg big blue nose to honk!). The child can then be drawn as a superhero to make them feel more in control. By externalsiing their emotions and sharing what they are feeling it helps normalise things for them. Breathing Exercises When your body is calm and relaxed, your body is in rest mode. When you feel stressed the breathing rate and pattern changes as part of the ‘fight-or-flight response’. Muscles tense up, heart rate increases and breathing becomes more shallow. Taking deep breaths, instead of shallow breaths, is one way to tell your body to get back to resting. These simple breathing techinques below can be helpful:Tummy Breathing Lie on the floor and place a small stuffed animal on your stomach. Breathe in deeply through your nose and feel the stuffed animal rise, and then feel it lower as you slowly exhale through your mouth.Rock the stuffed animal to sleep using the rise and fall of your stomach Bubble Breathing Sit comfortably with your eyes closed. Begin by imagining you are holding a bubble wand. Breathe in deeply and then, as you breathe out slowly and gently, imagine you are blowing bubbles into the room. Imagine the bubbles are filled with peace or love or happiness and that you are filling the whole room with a peaceful, happy feeling. As you keep breathing slowly and blowing your imaginary bubbles , feel your body become calm and relaxed. Elephant Breathing Stand with your feet wide apart and your arms dangling in front of your body like an elephant's trunk. As you breathe in deeply through your nose, raise your arms up above your head. Then slowly swing your arms down again as you breathe out through your mouth.

[strategies|to|help] [children] Kindful Cards - a collaboration between Scamp and mindful wellbeing expert & therapist Natalie Pennicote-Collier of CalmerRamaFamily. A set of 25 cards with positive messages in bright colours to help you start and end your day with ease - feeling brave, courageous, smart and strong. The Kindful Cards are a powerful and holistic way of building a positive mind and happier children. Affirmatons are simply statements that are designed to alter our beliefs about ourselves and make them more positive. They can serve as inspiration, as well as simple reminders. Research shows that even one minute of awareness to the moment and being kind to yourself and others, positively changes your brain, grows your good vibes and emotional well-being for the better. Use these cards in a variety of ways :DAILY MOMENT - choose a card and sit for one minute and feel what it means to you FAMILY KIND - Make the cards a PAUSE together moment. Connect, choose a card and discuss or just sit with the words before your meal. JUST BE - Choose a Kindful card - PAUSE and repeat the words out loud to yourself Happy, Sad, Funny Once children are in bed, this can be a calm time when children let down their guard slightly. Ask each other what is happy about their day, then sad, then funny. Sometimes a worry will come out that you wouldn't have otherwise found out about. It also reaffirms to them that adults have sad parts/worries in their day too. Ending on funny is a positive end.
