You’ve sold out Wembley and toured across the world but still remain loyal to your home town. Why is Winchester so important to you? I grew up just outside Winchester and as a teenager spent many an evening drinking at the Butter Cross and trying to sneak into The Railway to watch bands. I live in London now but still come back home to see my mum. Wessex Boy on my 2011 album, England Keep My Bones, was inspired by Winchester and we also filmed the video in the city.

I grew up listening to metal, punk, hardcore and thrash. I always wanted to be in a band and play music, but for the first period it was more stuff like Metallica, The Clash and Black Flag. In later years I stumbled more into the world of songwriters and folk and country music. I’ve always wanted to participate in the music that I enjoy listening to.

Do you think that the rise of online downloads has made it harder for artists to achieve success in the music industry?

I think it’s been a double-edged sword. The traditional business model has been holed below the waterline and it’s caused a lot of chaos and a fair bit of misery for a lot of people. But then exposure is much more democratic and widespread now. It’s much easier to get your music heard than it used to be, and that’s a good thing.

This year looks set to be another busy one for you. What are you most looking forward to?

I’m back touring again, with gigs in Europe, the US, Canada and Australia, which I always look forward to. I’ve been off the road a fair bit these last few months and I’m absolutely dying to get back out there again. My book, The Road Beneath My Feet, is just out and I’ve also got a new album coming out this summer. It’s going to be a great year!

WE ARE LOVING THE CITY…

MY WINCHESTER WITH ALASTAIR STEWART Composed and authoritative, ITV news presenter Alastair Stewart, OBE, has been conveying the world’s great events to the masses for over 30 years. He began his television career in 1976 at Southern Television in Southampton.

What brought you to Hampshire?

My mother – in 1952! I was born at Emsworth when my late father was serving as an RAF officer at Thorney Island. It is no longer an RAF base but my children occasionally ride there which I find delightfully nostalgic.

Where do you like eating out in Winchester?

Mr So, the Chinese restaurant in Jewry Street, has been a favourite for many years. We focus far more on the brilliant starters than on the equally good main courses and dining there is very much ‘share and battle’ eating with our family! I’m also very fond of Hotel du Vin. We’ve known its original co-creator, Robin Hutson, since we both had children at school together. His was a brilliant notion and this, partnered with the genius ‘nose’ of sommelier Gerard Basset, produced perfect intown dining in a glorious setting.

What do you think is the best thing about the city? It respects its remarkable history, is modern where it needs to be, and

also boasts a fine theatre and a good, independent cinema. For me it is a model city.

Are you involved with any city charities? I am a national patron of HomeStart UK, which helps to build better lives for children by offering families support at times of need.

The Royal British Legion matters a lot to me and I’ve supported them at events in the cathedral and the Theatre Royal. I was delighted to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Winchester in 2011. In my final year at school I was rejected by Cambridge for ‘lacking academic maturity’, so the doctorate was a rather wonderful turn of events all round!

WELCOMING THE WORLD Sandra Henderson has been hosting foreign students at her Winchester home for over five years for English Naturally, which places students from across Europe with families in the city and surrounding villages.

What is the best thing about hosting foreign students?

As well as benefiting from useful extra income, we learn a lot about the students’ home countries and culture. For our children, getting to spend time with foreign students has made them more broad-minded and accepting of others.

How easily do foreign students fit in within your family?

Very easily! We usually give each student a written list of basic house rules and they soon fit in and feel at home.

What do your students enjoy most about studying in Winchester?

The green spaces and small scale of the city as well as all the great cafés and shops. To find out more about hosting foreign students, contact English Naturally on Tel. 01962 859700. www.english-naturally.com. 17

The Fruit & Veg Stall

“I’ve been chatty and cheeky since I was young, so yelling loudly to sell fruit and veg comes easily to me. I get quite a lot of comments on my voice. “Over the years I’ve met all kinds of interesting people, including footballers Chris Coleman and Ronald Koeman. You never know who you’re going to see walking down the High Street.”

David Langridge

The Original Flower Stall

“I started volunteering at the Soup Service outside the Middle Brook Centre in 2010. Some of our regulars have been coming since the service first started; others have been rehoused but fallen again on hard times. “There’s a real Jill Clements community spirit. Soup Service, Hope Churc h We all sit together, drinking coffee, swapping stories and enjoying the hot food. The soup is more of a chunky stew than anything else. We do lots of variations of different recipes, but the firm favourite is definitely meatball!” “Although the centre of Winchester is well maintained by the council, the residential areas are often blighted by litter, especially at night. “To tackle this we have fortnightly ‘suburban sorties’, where around 15 of us clean up areas like Winnall and Stanmore. “Over the summer we up our workload and make sure that someone is there every day to clean up the Cathedral Outer Close. David Jones We also make a big effort Winchester Litter Pickers for Winchester’s many events, like the Hat Fair, where we help keep the streets clean in a variety of funky hats.” “I’ve sold flowers in Winchester since my teens and set up The Original Flower Stall seven years ago. The flower stall is in a prime spot, so Winchester’s big events and festivals are great for bringing new customers in. “People in Winchester love their seasonal flowers, and spring time is always busy for me. For those gents that don’t know what to buy, I always say you can’t go wrong with a single white rose.” 19

Olly Rouse is making his mark as head chef at The Avenue at Lainston House after fine-tuning his skills at the likes of Coworth Park, where he helped the restaurant achieve its first Michelin star, The Vineyard in Stockcross with John Campbell, and Pétrus under Marcus Wareing.

The Avenue’s menus, just like the restaurant itself, are noticeably edgier. Ingredient-inspired seasonal fine food is described simply, with the likes of ‘octopus, chorizo, pinenut, basil and green olive’, understating the finesse with which it is put together. Behind the scenes Olly is something of an alchemist, infusing, curing, fermenting and pickling seasonal produce straight from the walled kitchen garden. “Being able to surprise and stimulate the palate while also offering real quality is something the whole team strives for here,” he says. “It’s that combination of innovative cooking and flair that makes our restaurant so special.”

WE ARE FOOD LOVERS…

MEET MIFF With Miff Kayum, owner of Bangkok Brasserie, Bengal Sage and Kyoto Kitchen.

Why did you base your businesses in Winchester?

I grew up and studied in Winchester so the city is very much my home. One of my first jobs was in a local Indian restaurant and it was there that I developed my passion for food.

What’s the best thing about being based here?

The people. Winchester has got the most eclectic (and sometimes eccentric) blend of people that I’ve come across in any city. Winchester people are creative, energetic and dynamic and extremely supportive of local small businesses.

How important is sourcing local produce to you?

It’s very important to me – not only to minimise the environmental damage caused by transportation but also to support other local businesses. I’m lucky to have so many excellent local producers and suppliers on the doorstep.

What’s the secret to your success?

It has to be the fact that my businesses are all in Winchester. I am extremely grateful for the support and loyalty we have from the community here. Bangkok Brasserie, www.bangkokbrasserie.co.uk. Bengal Sage, www.thebengalsage.co.uk. Kyoto Kitchen, www.kyotokitchen.co.uk.

Set of four graters Husband and wife Keith and Helena Myers at The Myers Touch have been creating kitchen living spaces since 2003, with their team of interior architects and designers offering award-winning innovation.

While The Myers Touch enjoys longstanding partnerships with the iconic German manufacturer SieMatic and other leading brands including Siemens, Miele, Gaggenau, Wolf, and Sub-Zero, it’s the company’s focus on people that makes it stand apart. “We create kitchens that bring people together,” says Helena. “Often that means redesigning a living space within a family or relational setting to encourage more interaction. Sometimes it’s creating a minimalist cooking station for sophisticated entertaining. “Our designs often completely transform the way people interact in their kitchens.” Recent projects have included a kitchen for an indoor-outdoor living area to complement the architecture of a new contemporary extension. Light now floods into a basement

kitchen complete with integrated staircase storage, while the integrity of a listed property has been carefully maintained. “We view the kitchen area as a living space within a building as a whole,” Keith says. “A well-designed kitchen should sit harmoniously within its surroundings.” Ergonomics are key to kitchen design, says Keith, who is quick to point out the benefits of outwardfacing cooking areas and maximising external views. “Thinking about the way people interact within it is every bit as important as its functionality,” he says. The Myers Touch has received several industry awards for its design approach, with Helena among the finalists for Kitchen Design of the Year last year.

The company was also shortlisted as a finalist for the Designer of the Year Award in the prestigious Kitchens, Bedrooms & Bathrooms Awards. And Myers Touch kitchens have also featured in national home style magazines. Giving back to the community has long been important to the company, which regularly supports local good causes, putting into practice their strong belief in the importance of building communities. “Our work has always been focused on what we can bring to enhance our clients’ lives as opposed to purely what we can sell them,” says Helena. “A large proportion of our business comes from recommendation, and we’re really proud of that.” The Myers Touch, Kings Worthy, Winchester. PAINTINGS WITH SOUL Fine art consultant Josie Eastwood’s Winchester barn conversion is awash with light, allowing the works of contemporary art that hang from almost every wall to be admired at their absolute best. A large textured floral oil by Judy Buxton hangs on an expansive chimney breast which catches the light just so – the palette for the rest of the kitchen chosen around the painting, making it even more striking. A cosy sitting room is adorned with a still life by Nicky Phillips, who painted Princes William and Harry for the National Portrait Gallery. A soft floral painting by Hampshire artist Bindy Crossland fills a plain white wall, its delicate petals almost spilling out onto the stone floor below.

Bed Linens . Furniture . Lighting Kitchen . Design Services 11 Southgate Street, SO23 9DZ . www.janemcintyredesign.com

But this is not an intimidating ‘speak in whispers’ gallery. Because having ‘done’ London, and made a name for herself nationally, Josie Eastwood now works from home in Hampshire, and that, she says, is where she firmly intends to stay.

“For me, a painting always gives a room its soul.” It helps, of course, that Josie is now highly regarded in the art world. Work with Julian Hartnoll, the highly respected PreRaphaelite dealer, and management of the Cadogan Gallery in Chelsea, combined with consultancy, brought her a loyal client base, and she now travels the length and breadth of Britain, selecting original paintings, pastels and sculpture from some of the best contemporary artists. There are now over 30 on her books: they include established and rising stars such as Caroline Yates, Kate Corbett-Winder, Morag Ballard and Shirin Tabeshfar, and others brought into her fold annually, allowing clients access to oils that are almost fresh on the canvas. “I go for paintings that draw me to them,” she says. “It might simply be because they create a particular mood or feel. For me, a painting always gives a room its soul.” Four times a year Josie throws open the doors of her home for invitation-only exhibitions, showing art and sculpture in situ and showcasing her latest finds. “A quality original painting not only adds aesthetic beauty to a room but will also never date,” she says. “That makes it a good investment, and often a focal point for everything around it.” To join the mailing list for an invitation to Josie’s Spring Collection exhibition in May, visit www.josieeastwood.com. 33

The BeoPlay A2 looks like it’s been made to measure for a Fortnum & Mason hamper: it has an understated exterior, complete with a rather nice leather carrying strap, and it’s small enough to pack into your glove compartment – or your wash bag for that matter. Turn it on and its 360-degree omni-directional sound technology is a real head-turner, with a rich and punchy bass and impressive sound quality. Once charged it can offer up to 24 hours of non-stop music and can operate from two devices at a time – so you can team up with your friends and take turns being the DJ. £299.

Speakers glide out from the base, reconfiguring sound output according to the direction the television is facing. Screen quality is optimised as sensors measure the ambient light and even room colour to automatically adjust the TV’s image reproduction. Available in 55, 75 and 85-inch models from £6,250.

WE ARE AT THE AUCTION HOUSE…

UNDER THE HAMMER Buying and selling at auction is no longer solely reserved for the elite, says Catherine Hockley, a partner director at Andrew Smith & Son, which has an office in Winchester and is based in Itchen Stoke. “We offer an approachable, friendly service and are always happy to help newcomers to auction,” Catherine says. “We’ve seen a big influx of increasingly younger buyers and sellers over the last few years and take items with guide prices of as little as £50. “Buying furniture at auction makes sense on a number of levels: for example a £100 Victorian chest of drawers offers far better value for money than something made of chipboard. Buying and selling antiques is also a great way of recycling.” Featured regularly on BBC programmes such as Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip, Andrew Smith & Son offers lots ranging from retro toys to regal portraits. The company holds a monthly antiques and interiors sale on a Saturday as well as an antiques, fine art, interiors and collectables sale each month. Other specialist auctions run throughout the year.

Recent auctions have included an 18th-century Chinese incense burner, sold for over £12,000 – after having been used as a plant pot until it was valued. And a rare William Kent mirror, which was destined for the tip, made over £19,000.

A 19th century ormolu mantel clock for restoration, sold for £2,900.

Catherine Hockley

“We offer valuation appointments in our offices in Winchester and Itchen Stoke and will also come and view items in situ too,” says Catherine. “We uncover antiques in properties of all kinds – from small flats to stately homes.” “One of the most satisfying aspects of our work is identifying antiques that are tucked away where no one can appreciate them,” she says. “It’s sometimes the very things that are dismissed as being of no value to anyone that turn out to be real treasures.”

For free, no-obligation valuations and details of how to buy and sell at auction call Andrew Smith & Son on 01962 735988. www.andrewsmithandson.com. Free home visits for valuations can be arranged on request.

An 18th century chinoiserie secretaire cabinet, sold for £19,600.

Holistic treatments for face and body including massage, facials, pedicures, manicures and waxing using organic Neal’s Yard products.

Tanith Rowles offers clients top-notch pampering from the comfort of their own homes, using organic Neal’s Yard products, enriched with nourishing essential oils, across her range of therapies. What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is paying attention on purpose to what is happening in the present moment. When you’re mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them as good or bad.

What are its benefits?

By allowing the mind to focus in a positive way, mindfulness can calm the nervous system, change negative ways of thinking and support good mental health. It has also been shown to improve focus, creativity and resilience, support better sleep and help manage pain.

Is there any evidence that it works?

HOME SPA

Buddhist monks have been practising a similar technique for over 2,500 years, and modern clinical trials have shown that mindfulness can be as effective as antidepressants.

What lasting changes can I expect to see in the way I feel?

First of all you will feel much calmer, because you will be able to see things from a new perspective. You will feel more connected to your body and breath and be able to use them as anchors during stressful situations. You will also have more awareness about how you respond to stressful situations rather than reacting to them on auto-pilot. Mindfulness training with Amanda Ridgley costs £250 for an eight-week course, limited to eight people. www.fertiliza.co.uk.

Tanith says that her home spa service allows clients to fully relax within their own surroundings. “There’s nothing better than slipping on a robe and slippers after some pampering and chilling out within your own four walls,” she says. “I treat a range of clients, from elderly and disabled people to mums wanting a little me-time without having to book a babysitter.

“Because I’ve trained across several fields, my beauty treatments often incorporate elements of massage and reflexology, which makes them all the more beneficial for relaxing the mind as well as the body.” Tanith Rowles offers beauty therapy within 20 minutes of Winchester. Tel. 07980 212297.

FINDING STILLNESS Thekchen Kadampa Buddhist Centre offers drop-in meditation classes at the Quaker Meeting House on House on The High Street on Wednesdays from 7pm to 8.30pm. Classes cost £7. www.meditateinhampshire.org.

Flowers

Corinne Jullian at Atelier Floral Art creates the flowers for our Winchester salon and has a pop-up shop here on Friday and Saturday. Her arrangements are imaginative and different from anything else you’ll find in the city.

Clothes

I buy all my summer clothes from Cadogan in The Square and particularly like their linen shirts and suits. I’ve got a weakness for shoes from Russell & Bromley and have their Misty loafer in almost the entire range of colours.

Jewellery

Justice on Parchment Street is a favourite of mine, for its contemporary British designs. I received a pair of Stephen Webster gold bear cufflinks with cabochon ruby eyes as a gift recently and I wear them almost all the time.

For lunch I often go to Kyoto Kitchen in Parchment Street, as their Japanese food is delicious while also being healthy and light. Hotel du Vin on Southgate Street is a favourite of mine for an elegant dinner, and at the weekend I head out to The Greyhound in Stockbridge, where the setting and menus are fantastic.

Shop

For presents I go to Forme in Parchment Street, which stocks interesting and unusual home accessories and wraps everything beautifully.

Pampering

I’m on my feet almost all day in the salon, so regularly treat myself to a pedicure at our upstairs beauty room.

Fitness

I work out with Helen at New Energy Fitness in Middle Brook Street, which has an excellent choice of specialist classes, and I swim at Norton Park Hotel, where the pool area is always flooded with sunshine.

Indulgence

My greatest indulgence of all time is my Bentley Continental, which came from Bentley Hampshire in Lyndhurst. I’m also very fond of Lainston House, which offers an elegant retreat at the end of a busy week. Guy Kremer, Stonemasons Court, Parchment Street. Tel. 01962 860149. www.guykremer.co.uk. 49

Pass Tommy Jessop in Winchester and you’d be forgiven for thinking there was nothing particularly remarkable about him. At 30, he’s of average height and a snappy dresser. He also has Downs Syndrome but that in itself isn’t particularly remarkable either.

In 2004 Tommy auditioned for a place on a BBC/ Channel 4 training scheme for disabled actors, beating off competition from several hundred candidates. His first TV role was as Ben in the BAFTA-nominated film Coming Down The Mountain where he starred alongside Nicholas Hoult. Other TV roles have included playing Downs’ characters in Holby City, Casualty, Monroe

and Doctors as well as a radio part in The Archers. And in 2005 Tommy became a founding member of Winchester’s Blue Apple Theatre company which is formed of actors with learning disabilities. The company has had two professional tours, with funding from The Arts Council allowing Blue Apple to take Hamlet to over 3,500 people in five counties. Asked what his dream role would be, Tommy smiles. “It would be in a romantic comedy with Patsy Kensit or Keira Knightley”, he says. It’s the sort of ambition that coming from many local actors you might dismiss as a pipe dream. But see Tommy Jessop on stage or meet him in the flesh at the Theatre Royal where he volunteers as an usher and you can’t help but thinking it will only be a matter of time.

WE ARE MAKING OUR MARK ON THE CITY…

A FEW OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS

THE HOUSE THAT HUW BUILT

With Winchester interior designer Jane McIntyre Aprons by Once Milano are made from rustic Italian linens in intense colours and are robust enough to tackle any indoor or garden job yet stylish enough to cover you up when greeting the postman or dinner guest. £59.

Walk through Winchester and you’ll probably pass not one but several properties that started life on Huw Thomas’ desk. The architect, based in Southgate Street, has been at the forefront of imaginative design in Winchester for several decades – his most notable project being the revitalisation of the Peninsular Barracks, which transformed no less than a fifth of the city’s inner area. But it’s not just for award-winning adaptations of historic and listed buildings that Huw is so highly sought after. His sophisticated one-off designs for developers such as Alfred Homes have seen him create classically-inspired new homes that are so much in demand that they regularly sell off-plan. Huw learnt his trade at London’s Architectural Association School of Architecture. Time spent working alongside renowned architect Sir Colin Stansfield Smith at Hampshire County Architects gave him his passion for retaining a sense of the 54

past and in 1980 he set up his own practice in Winchester, falling headfirst into a battle to save Peninsular Barracks from demolition. “The site was acquired by developers who proposed knocking down the former military buildings completely and erecting high-density housing and a huge underground car park in their place,” he says. “As someone who had always had a great love of historic buildings I just couldn’t let that happen.” Huw’s scheme not only involved the conversion of the existing buildings and construction of new buildings into 120 homes; it also opened up five acres of parks and gardens which had been closed to the public for three centuries. Although the scheme took several years to realise, it made Huw a city champion for architectural appreciation and conservation. Today he specialises in both restoration and new development projects and is highly regarded for designs that combine innovation with a respect for Winchester’s character and history. Walk the city streets and you’ll pass ‘a house that Huw built’ at almost every turn. Curving elegantly

around Eastgate Street, Georgianinspired townhouses blend into their surroundings, while further down the road there’s The Black Hole, once a series of scruffy workshops and now a bijoux B&B. The remodelling of parts of Jewry Street, the apartments to the side of the Discovery Centre, and Mozetta in St Thomas Street, inspired by Winchester’s medieval past, are among no fewer than 300 homes within the city centre that he can put his name to.

“I have this strong conviction that a new development needs to sit politely next to its neighbours,” he says. “That means designing sensitively while also maintaining respect for the surrounding buildings.” Contemporary designs for Alfred Homes have included a series of luxury family homes which resemble a small Victorian hamlet at Blue Ball Hill, three individually-designed properties at Dean Place on Dean Lane, and classically-inspired Connaught Square on Chilbolton Avenue. “Alfred Homes are committed in the same way that I am to creating new buildings that are both stylish and in keeping with their setting,” Huw says. “I avoid the fashionable contemporary approach with cedar cladding, zinc facades and featureless concealed lintels, because they have all started to look the same. “I want to be able to walk around my city in the years to come and feel proud that what I helped to create has stood the test of time. Winchester is one of the most important and architecturally rich cities in England and I’d like to think I’ve played a part in keeping it that way for the generations to come.”

WE ARE CITY LIVING…

QUALITY HOMES FOR DISCERNING TENANTS

savills.co.uk

There’s never been a better time to consider buy to let says Savills Winchester’s head of lettings Tara Kelly, with the city’s popularity as one of the best places to live in the country creating a surge of professionals eager to rent. “The buoyant rental market combined with low interest rates and year-on-year house price growth has made buy to let investment increasingly attractive,” says Tara. “Quality homes are always in demand.” Savills tenants range from city workers looking for one bedroom apartments to Southampton football players who need large country homes for entertaining. Monthly rents range from £850 to over £7,000.

“Landlords can expect yields of between four and five per cent” says Tara. “That compares very favourably to other forms of investment. “Some of our landlords invest in tenanted properties solely to benefit from their incremental value, whereas others might rent their homes during a period where they are working overseas.”

Savills’ services include detailed floor plans, professional photos and advice on interiors. Staff will attend a rental property on moving-in day and can even provide furniture packages if required, allowing tenants to move in with everything they need in place. Tara says: “We look after our clients’ homes as we would our own and both our tenants and landlords really appreciate the high levels of service we offer.” Savills Winchester Tel. 01962 834 020. www.savills.co.uk.

RETIREMENT LIVING AT ITS BEST Professor Peter Fookes is a busy man. At 82, he’s still working on papers in engineering geology as one of the most respected international experts in his field. He’s retired, but is in daily contact with industry professionals in his home office where he works with a part-time secretary. Not only does he have over 200 papers to his name, but he’s just finished his eighth book, which he’s dedicated to Sunrise Senior Living in Weeke, where he now lives.

It’s not the first time Hollywood greats have chosen the restaurant for an evening out, with the plethora of feature films shot in the city bringing big stars to Winchester. City locations have recently featured in Wolf Hall starring Damien Lewis filmed at The Hospital of St Cross and the Cathedral and The Riot Club, with Douglas Booth and Sam Clafin, filmed at The Great Hall and Winchester College.

Hugh Jackman appeared in scenes of Les Miserables in College Street, and The Da Vinci Code and Elizabeth: The Golden Age were shot in part at the Cathedral. “The planning that precedes every piece of filming is extensive,” says Anna Boyd-Smith at Film Hampshire at Hampshire County Council which promotes locations across the city and beyond. “Every request is different and we handle enquiries for locations for photographic shoots right through to those for major feature films.

“We also get requests for residential homes – from two bedroom terraces to country estates - and are always keen to hear from local people who are interested in including their properties on our database.”

While Anna admits her job isn’t all red carpets and mixing with the stars, getting the chance to see so many of the city’s hidden gems adds to the fun of it. “I still get a buzz from seeing somewhere in Winchester that I have found appearing on television or in a film – even if it’s just for a few seconds,” she says. “Little does the viewing public know the work that has been put in behind the scenes!” Film Hampshire. THE ULTIMATE GARDEN GADGET Looking for effortless lawn mowing? Then check out the robotic Husqvarna 305, capable of cutting up to 500 square metres of grass – on its own – on a single charge. After initial programming, it cuts within a perimeter wire sunk into the lawn, fine-clipping the grass before returning automatically to its charging station. Available from a range of auto-mowers at Winchester Garden Machinery, Hiller Garden Centre, Romsey Road. Tel. 01962 863705.

We’ve got mowing covered.

“We didn’t realise until we had moved in that there was a large allotment site at the end of the garden,” she says. “When a plot came free we decided to go for it.”

Georgina and husband Pete started conservatively and were impressed straightaway with how much help they received from other gardeners. “Suddenly a whole new community opened up to us,” she says. “People we had only said hello to in the street became friends through gardening, and their help and advice was free-flowing from day one.

“Gardening makes you very aware of the natural rhythm of growing, which I think as a nation we have very much lost sight of. I’m probably at my happiest when I’ve got a pair of wellies on.” Georgina Windsor presents The Good Life on BBC Radio Solent on Sundays from 12-2pm.

WE ARE MOTORING…

CITY SLICKER Danny Cobbs test-drives the new Skoda Fabia The Skoda Fabia has had something of a bumper start to 2015, having won the most prestigious motoring award in the UK: What Car? Car of the Year. The Czech model, which has an entry level of just £10,600, also won the Small Car category, and scooped the main prize exactly 15 years after winning it for the first time in 2000.

While the new Fabia retains all the qualities of the old model, delivering great value for money, bags of interior space and a host of practical features, it’s also much sharper on exterior design. Bodywork has been dramatically softened and modernised, veering away from staid designs of old, making it appeal to a much wider, style-savvy audience.

Styling inspiration has unashamedly come from Skoda’s VisionC concept car, and that can be seen in its contoured bonnet, sharp shunt lines and sweeping slotted grille with wraparound headlights.

Although its footprint is now slightly shorter than before, bumper-tobumper, there’s a 90mm gain on the width and a further 8mm on interior length, which improves back-seat leg and elbow room. The load area has benefited too. A wider hatch opening increases boot space to 330 litres, expandable to 1,150 litres with the rear bench folded flat.

The cabin is sharper, with Bluetooth, electric front windows, DAB radio, heated door mirrors, stop/start and six airbags. On the two higher trim levels, Skoda’s MirrorLink system clones the functions of an iPhone or Android phone, including fingerswipe input, transmitting them directly to the dashboard monitor.

The Colour Concept system is a first for this Fabia, opening up the choice to a mix of interior finishes and materials, 15 different paintwork colours and three sets of wheels.

Mechanics are built around the Volkswagen multipurpose MQB platform, allowing for inter-company sharing of engines and drivetrains. The engines on offer – four petrol and two diesels, plus a revised Greenline, which is due in the latter part of 2015 – can all be found in a comparable VW Polo or Audi A1. Skoda isn’t trying to hide this fact. But it is nearimpossible to tell them apart from any of the VAG cousins. All engines are up to 17 per cent more efficient than the ones they replace. The range begins with a 1.0-litre 59bhp three-cylinder unit,

and if this Fabia is being bought solely as a city car this engine is more than fit for purpose. For maximum fuel efficiencies and the lowest emissions it has to be one of the 1.4-litre diesels (available in either 89bhp or 103bhp).

Suspension, irrespective of engine, is nicely pliant and deals with any tarmac imperfections while absorbing that tiring high-frequency patter of your average concrete motorway. More style, space and a higher standard of equipment certainly ensure the Fabia’s continued success. To arrange a test drive, contact Winchester Motor Company. Tel. 01962 670256.

SMOOTH OPERATOR Danny Cobbs gets behind the wheel of the new Ford Mondeo Estate Inside and out, the new Ford Mondeo Estate is as smart to look at as any of its German rivals, and pound for pound better value too.

At an entry point of £22,295 it comes with an impressive boot space; not quite as big as some of the others it currently shares the same market with, but that’s mainly due to the fact it’s not quite as tall. It’s longer and wider than most and a lot sleeker too. The load area is completely flat, meaning you’re not trying to heave heavy items over the boot lip, which makes life a whole lot easier.

specialists on site who have the combined experience and product knowledge to take care of all of your requirements.

Dropping the rear seats down is easypeasy and performed by handles next to headrests. With the rear seats left in situ there’s still plenty of elbow and headroom for back-seat passengers, and a massive amount of legroom, even for tall adults.

The previous Mondeo Estate found critical acclaim for the way it handled, and there’s little to find fault with in the way this model rides, even when loaded to the gunnels. It has unprecedented agility, with lots of grip and no problem soaking up uneven road surfaces. My test car was fitted with the 1.5-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol engine, and although this is unlikely to be the UK’s biggest seller, due to
