For teams who are determined to find a challenge, summiting Mount Meru (4,562m) or Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m), the highest mountain in Africa, has got to be your ultimate goal on this expedition! But Tanzania has so much more to offer so don’t go home without spotting the Big Five on safari, exploring the culture of the local people and haggling with traders in the vibrant and colourful markets! You’ll also be contributing to a worthwhile community project and could be helping with the reforestation within Kilimanjaro National Park.

The best time to go: All year, but avoid March, April and November due to heavy rain

The terrain is very varied and you could be exploring coast, forest or savannah but most importantly you will climb one of the breathtaking mountains.

Tanzania is hot throughout the year and is humid on the coast and dry on the central plateau. The Highlands can be cold at night.

Swahili is the official language. You may hear English and some Arabic on the coast.

Challenge yourself

You can find your feet whilst trekking through the Pare Mountains with great views of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Alternatively you may head to Mount Longido. Ascending through dense bush, the summit is a peak of bare rock with fantastic views of the Rift Valley and surrounding mountains. There may also be opportunities for you and your team to stay in villages, and meet the Maasai people of the area.

Mount Kilimanjaro provides the chance to reach the snow-capped peak of Africa’s highest mountain, whilst Mount Meru offers a challenging trek through dense cloud forests and volcanic craters with staggering views and an opportunity to see the wildlife.

“Although Kilimanjaro is physically challenging, mental endurance played a large part, and because I continued to the top I proved to myself that I am capable and determined – it was a real confidence boost and for that I am very grateful.”

Our teams have worked with Waramu School for the past four years. The school was first established to meet the local community’s need for primary education, but has since expanded to a point where its current site is no longer fit for purpose. Previous teams have been working with the local community to build and decorate new classrooms, providing a safe, modern environment for the children.

MALAWI

Come face-to-face with the Big Five on a fantastic jeep safari in one of Tanzania’s famous game reserves. Alternatively head to the sandy shores of the Swahili coast or to the stunning, turquoise waters of Zanzibar. Choose to go snorkeling, or just kick back and relax in a hammock!

Across Tanzania there are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved with the re-development and improvement of local primary schools. Tasks vary from project to project, ranging from refurbishing classrooms to building new ones and preparing sports and academic lessons.

Our In-Country Agent for Tanzania is Timba. He is from the Chagga tribe that has lived on the slopes of Kilimanjaro for centuries he has climbed the mountain over 30 times!
