START HERE

DAY 1 ARRIVE IN LIMA Sleep: Hostel

Touch down in the ancient city of Lima. You’ve made it to Peru – home of the Andes, the Amazon, and the Inca empire. Make sure you get some rest after your flight. You’re about to take the road less travelled and experience the places you’ve been dreaming about. Wild mountains, fascinating cities and sacred ruins – they’re all here, waiting to be explored.

DAYS 2-3

LIMA & CUSCO

Sleep: Hostels Travel: Fly 1.5hrs to Cusco

Dive into expedition life. Meet the ground team, get to grips with the currency (Peruvian sol) and buy a SIM card for the team phone. Lima is bursting with energy and loaded with history. Hit the ground running with a city tour, starting with the Pucllana pyramid, Plaza Mayor (the main square) and the San Francisco Monastery. Time-travel to the 21st century at Lima’s modern mall in the Miraflores district, then visit Parque del Amor (Love Park) and gaze over the Pacific. After two nights in Lima, fly to the historic heartland of Cusco – capital of the Inca empire. Take a deep breath when you land at the dizzy height of 3,450m, and gather the team to stroll through the cobblestone streets. Today is about taking things easy and acclimatising slowly – you’ll be back to see more of the city later in the trip.

DAYS 4-6 COMMUNITY INITIATIVE Sleep: Camp Travel: Transfer 2.5hrs to the community + Transfer 2.5hrs to Cusco

Time to experience the reality of rural life. This is a real cultural adventure. You’ll live alongside a community and experience their lives in the High Andes.

Life out here is tough. Around 39% of the population is aged under 18 and illiteracy rates are high. Discover how indigenous communities tackle these issues and use sustainable tourism to support their way of life.

This is a side to Peru that few tourists see. Stay open-minded and you’ll leave with a fascinating glimpse into another way of life.

Roll up your sleeves and get hands-on. Help out with basic construction work, like maintaining the reservoir and learn how to build a sunshade from locally sourced logs. The people here speak Quechua and Spanish, so learn a few words to

SACRED VALLEY OR CUSCO CULTURE

Today you’ve got options. You could stick around in Cusco and discover more of the Inca capital, or you could travel to Chinchero in the Sacred Valley – this valley is famous for its colonial towns, traditional weaving villages and ancient Inca ruins. To explore this legendary landscape, you could book onto a cycle tour past Andean villages, craft markets and the beautiful Huaypo Lagoon. Or how about a paddleboarding adventure on Piuray Lake, with jawdropping views of the Andes.

DAYS 8-10 THE INCA QUARRY TRAIL Sleep: Camp, hostel Travel: Transfer 1.5hrs to Choquequilla + 20mins Rafq’a, train 1.5hrs to Aguas Calientes Trek: 3 days

DAYS 11-12

MACHU PICCHU & CUSCO

Sleep: Hostels Travel: Shuttle 30mins to Machu Pichhu, shuttle 30mins + train 1hr45mins + transfer 2hrs to Cusco

Boots on, daypack loaded, it’s time for the Inca Quarry Trail – a lesser-known trek in the Sacred Valley. Meet your guides and porters – learn all you can from these mountain masters and you’ll ace this trek. Transfer to Choquequilla, where the Incas used to worship the moon, and continue to the start point at Rafq’a.

Finish with a train ride through the Urubamba Valley to Aguas Calientes, at the foot of Machu Picchu. Now for the best bit – soothe your weary muscles in the town’s hot springs. Bliss.

Step forward as team leader and set the pace as you trek beneath the Andes and climb to epic viewpoints. Cameras at the ready.

THE TREKKING MANTRA

On your first night, you’ll camp at 3,700 metres, near the Inca checkpoint of Q’orimarca. The next day, you’ll

TREKKING AT ALTITUDE IS TOUGH. REMEMBER TO WALK SLOWLY, STAY HYDRATED AND GET PLENTY OF SLEEP.

You could also book a visit to see more of Ollantaytambo or the Chinchero ruins – the Incas believed this was the birthplace of the rainbow.

Take the early morning shuttle to the gates of ‘the lost city’ and listen as your guide uncovers its secrets. Wander around the ruins and let it all sink in – you’re actually standing in Machu Picchu! After an amazing morning, it’s time to drag yourself away and take a stunning train ride to the town of Ollantaytambo before continuing to Cusco. Delve deeper into Cusco culture and discover the Inca temple of Qoricancha, the colonial arcades of Plaza de Armas square, and the Casa Concha museum which boasts the world’s largest collection of Machu Picchu artefacts.

TRAVEL HOME FROM LIMA

Fly back to Lima for your final fill of Peruvian culture. You could book onto a cookery class or explore more of the historic centre. Perched above the ocean, the clifftop Parque de la Reserva is another top attraction – it’s best in the evening when there’s a fantastic water and light show.

Before your trip wraps up, head to San Pedro market. Taste some Peruvian chocolate, shop for handicrafts and pick out your favourite alpaca poncho to take home.

FEELING HUNGRY?

CHOW DOWN ON ‘LOMO SALTADO’ FRIED BEEF, ‘BUTIFARRA’ SANDWICHES, ‘ANTICUCHOS’ HEART KEBABS AND ‘PICARONES’ DONUTS.
