SCHOOL TRAVEL SURVEY
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The 2020 School Travel Survey was designed to quantify and qualify the impact of COVID-19 on school group travel programs throughout Australia and New Zealand. It was sent to hundreds of schools in August 2020 and the results are representative of schools from all states, school type, size and age groups. Almost 100% of schools previously ran overseas school trips, and of those, all programs were impacted by COVID-19. The results illustrate that schools are eagerly awaiting the return of experiential learning programs and most anticipate overseas travel within the next 12-30 months. The majority expecting to advertise these overseas opportunities in mid 2021 and travel again from end 2021 or early 2022 onwards. DFAT/MFAT support for travel was seen as a more significant pre-requisite than parent body support, senior leadership approval or a readily available vaccination. Two week long experiences and closer to home destinations such as New Zealand, Australia, Pacific Islands and Japan were also popular.
