It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to The Curragh for Day 2 of the Juddmonte Irish Oaks Weekend. This is always a very special event and promises to be as good as ever this year. It is great that we will have the owners back racing as they contribute so much to our sport. While we are disappointed not to have more than 500 attendees here, we have to respect the Covid protocols and we look forward to welcoming great numbers back before too long. This afternoon we have two Group 2 races on an eight race card so there is plenty to look forward to. The two principal races are very generously sponsored by Robert Ng for the Minstrel Stakes and by Shane Ryan for the Kilboy Estate Stakes. The Minstrel Stakes celebrates the career of Romanised who won the Minstrel Stakes twice in a fine career, the highlight being his win in the Group 1 Jacques le Marois in Deauville. Romanised was trained on the Curragh by Ken Condon who is a great ambassador for the Curragh Training Grounds. The Kilboy Estate Stakes has produced many great champions including Magical who won it in 2018 before going on to win seven Group 1 races. Hopefully today’s race will produce another worthy champion. Today we welcome back Sycamore Lodge Equine Hospital and Finlay Volvo, who are all generous long term partners of ours. We also welcome Cavalor Equine Nutrition who are sponsoring for the first time and we hope that today marks the start of a long relationship. We are very grateful to the Irish Stallion Farms for their continued support, they are the biggest race sponsors in Ireland. I would like to thank all our sponsors for their generous contribution to the Curragh and ask you to support them whenever you can. We would like to say a particular thank you to all the Front-Line Workers who have done a magnificent job is looking after us all during the Covid crisis. Your contribution has been total, and we are all greatly indebted to you. For those of you reading this through our digital race card, I hope that you will enjoy the racing, either on TV or by following it through our social media channels. Today’s racing is being covered by Racing TV, so there is no reason to miss out on the action. Thanks again for all your support of the Curragh, we really appreciate it. I hope you enjoy the racing and once again a big thank you to Juddmonte and all our sponsors for their continued support. Kind regards PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

Official Handicap Rating
B O F J T
Breeding Breeder Owner Form Jockey Trainer
The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT It was no surprise to see that CONCERT HALL found 6f too sharp on her debut at Fairyhouse recently but plenty of positives can be taken from that second-placed finish. The daughter of Dubawi and Oaks winner Was should relish this extra furlong and the experience she gained that day could prove to be vital. Kerkiyra also caught the eye on her debut over C&D and she should not be underestimated, while Panama Red is another with valid form claims. Kiss You Later, Shamiyana and Voice Of Angels are all well-bred newcomers and they merit market inspections.

THE ROMANISED MINSTREL STAKES Named this year after both a dual winner of the race and The Minstrel himself, who won both the 198th Derby at Epsom and the Irish Derby here at The Curragh in 1977, the Minstrel Stakes is a Group 2, run over seven furlongs and has seen a multitude of high-class winners over the years. Where better to start than with Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois champion Romanised himself, who won this in both 2019 and 2020 for his trainer Ken Condon, ridden on both occasions by Billy Lee. The son of Holy Roman Emperor was hugely impressive on both occasions, initially in beating the Frankie Dettori-ridden Hey Gaman with a wicked turn of foot inside the final furlong and then in remarkably similar style to defeat the smart Aidan O’Brien-trained Lancaster House last year. Tracking the early leader throughout, Romanised was perfectly positioned by Lee and despite finding himself a little short of room against the far rail two furlongs from home, the jockey didn’t panic and waited for the gap to appear. Appear it did and Lee switched his mount left, around Lancaster House, approaching the final furlong, where Romanised picked up in the manner of a classy colt under minimal pressure, staying on strongly to put a length and three quarters between him and his rival at the line. See how the race panned out with the replay on the following page. There have actually been three dual winners of the Minstrel Stakes, the other two being Ramooz (1997 & 1999) for trainer Ben Hanbury and the great Gordon Lord Byron for the Tom Hogan team.
Coincidentally, or perhaps not, Billy Lee was the man in the saddle for Gordon Lord Byron’s second triumph back in 2016, therefore he’s ridden three of the last five winners - a trend to follow perhaps! The Minstrel Stakes were two of the much missed Gordon Lord Byron’s four victories at the Curragh, the second coming at the grand old age of eight where he showed all of his trademark battling qualities to hold off the challenge of Sovereign Debt in a thriller. Aidan O’Brien is the race’s most successful trainer, with five Minstrel Stakes wins to his name; Wandering Thoughts (1994), King Charlemagne (2001), Air Chief Marshal (2010), Darwin (2013) and Spirit Of Valor (2017). King Charlemagne’s victory was part of an unbeaten season as a three-year-old that included, much like Romanised, a Group 1 victory in France, this time in the Prix Maurice De Gheest. Maybe the winner this afternoon could also follow that path from Ireland to France later on in the season.
ROMANISED
A talented Classic winner, Romanised ran out an easy winner of the 2018 Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas, seeing off a strong field to win under Shane Foley by two and a quarter lengths. Trained expertly by Ken Condon, Romanised further enhanced his reputation when winning the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois and by winning back to back renewals of the Group 2 Minstrel Stakes.
Jamesie, winner of 8 races including Gr.3 Renaissance Stakes at the Curragh, retrained by Rebecca Rafter to compete in showing classes.

CURRAGH COMMENT ORDER OF AUSTRALIA can take advantage of a drop in grade having not run up to his best when eighth in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot on his return to action. Aidan O'Brien's colt improved a fair amount for dropping back in trip last season, most notably when landing the Breeders' Cup Mile, so the ease to 7f is unlikely to pose any concerns. Ace Aussie boasts form with Poetic Flare having chased him home at Leopardstown in April and he commands the utmost respect, along with Njord.

CURRAGH COMMENT The Joseph O'Brien stable has been ticking over nicely of late and his filly I SIYOU BABY gets the vote to break her maiden tag here. She was nabbed late at Naas last month and can go one better. Feared most are Tellthemi'mhere, who has run well on recent outings, and Give Her A Squeeze, who seems to have improved since making the switch to the McCreery stable. Breaker Of Chains is a newcomer to note for a stable known for readying one.

CURRAGH COMMENT An intriguing contest in which CELTIC CROWN might just hold the edge having advertised her present wellbeing with a decisive success under similar conditions at Killarney earlier in the week. The Hallowed Crown filly does get further than this and a 6lb penalty may not be enough to anchor her, given that hat-trick seeker New Hill and Mia Mento have niggling stamina queries to answer. The biggest threat may come from Emphatic Answer, who swooped late to score in the mud on her handicap bow, though she's unproven on a sound surface.

MAGICAL
2018 KILBOY ESTATE STAKES WINNER
Magical took this race on her ascension to greatness, with this being her second win at Group level. The cosy win in this race set her up for a season of clashes in top Group 1’s
THE KILBOY ESTATE STAKES This race was established in 2004 and reached Group 3 status in 2011 before being promoted to Group 2 status in 2013 as part of the expansion and enhancement of the programme for fillies and mares in Europe. Its roll of honour includes a host of horses who have gone to achieve notable success both at home and abroad, perhaps none more so than the brilliant Magical, who went on to Group 1 triumph no less than seven times after winning the Kilboy Estate Stakes back in 2018. Magical by name and nature, the Aidan O’Brien-trained filly bolted up here as a three-year-old, making all in extremely comfortable style under Ryan Moore. Her career skyrocketed from then on, with two Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cups and a Group 1 Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly Stakes going her way here at The Curragh, while two Irish Champion Stakes triumphs came at Leopardstown and victories on QIPCO British Champions Day in both 2018 and 2019, all helping her cement her status as one of the best race mares in recent memory. While few can match quite that level of achievement, there still have been plenty of classy winners of this race, including the Sir Michael Stoutetrained Dank, who won this back in 2013. She went on to international success, when taking the Grade 1 Beverly D Stakes before coming out on top in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita in the same year. The same trainer was back the very next year to take his second Kilboy Estate Stakes courtesy of Mango Diva, but his two winners in the race fall one short of the two joint winningmost trainers in the race’s history. David Wachman won three renewals of this race in the space of five years as Navajo Moon (2008), Latin Love (2010) and Tannery (2012) all were first
past the post, but it wasn’t long before the Aidan O’Brien powerhouse drew level with three winners in four years. Wedding Vow was the first to get on the board for O’Brien in 2015, before Elizabeth Browning landed the odds in 2017 and the aforementioned Magical blew her rivals away 12 months later.
Success in this clearly runs in the family too, as Aidan’s son, Joseph O’Brien saddled the 2019 winner, Red Tea, who was ridden by Donnacha, also a member of the O’Brien clan. Last year’s renewal of this famous race saw trainer Ger Lyons and jockey Colin Keane secure their first victory in the race as they teamed up with Lemista who came from almost last to first, staying on strongly to deny the Aidan O’Brien team a fourth win in the Kilboy Estate Stakes. See how the race panned out in the video below.

CURRAGH COMMENT Not the deepest Group 2 on paper, with a number of the runners requiring notable improvement in order to reach the level needed to operate in this company. That comment certainly doesn't apply to CREATE BELIEF, however, with the three-year-old having posted a huge performance when slamming her rivals in the Sandringham last time off a mark of 97. Now rated 110, a repeat of that sort of form will give her an excellent chance of taking this step up in class in her stride. Angel Power doesn't have race-fitness on her side but should still make a bold bid, such was the level of improvement she showed last year, while Insinuendo may still be capable of better and is also feared.

RACE SIX
CURRAGH COMMENT While it is easy to pick holes in many of these candidates, ZAYNUDIN arrives on the back of two encouraging outings over 1m2f. The Joseph O'Brien-trained gelding hit the line strong on both occasions and, now the form of each contest has been advertised handsomely, gets the vote to shed the maiden tag on stable debut. Shinpachi took a step in the right direction last time out and it would be no surprise if we saw further progress from the Galileo cut. Colin Keane opts to get on board Royal Eagle and the debutant must be respected.
WIN: ZAYNUDIN
DANGER: SHINPACHI
HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH TRAINER PROFILE Frank Oakes Frank Oakes is a racehorse trainer on The Curragh. From a young age he was bitten by the bug and set up training racehorses after turning down a job in the airline industry! The hugely popular trainer has worked with horses for more than 60 years and has been based on The Curragh since 2004. Mountain Coral was Frank’s biggest winner on the flat when winnng the Scurry Handicap here in 2009 on Derby Weekend. At the age of 80 Frank still rides a lot or two everyday and intends to keep riding out on The Curragh for as long as he can. “As long as John Kiely keeps going, I have to keep going!”

CURRAGH COMMENT MODDY PODDLE is clearly a filly that is going places and, getting weight from all her rivals here, she can follow up her recent success at Gowran. CURRAGH COMMENT Plenty of these have claims but a chance can be taken with ARNHEM, who was not far behind the winner when finishing fifth in the Rockingham over C&D last month. Based on that evidence, the five-year-old should be hard to beat off a 2lb lower mark and eased in grade today. Amazing Emma has to be of some interest having scored at Navan eight days ago, while the unexposed pair of Young Angel and Provocateuse merit consideration on their handicap debuts.
WIN: ARNHEM
DANGER: AMAZING EMMA
