Frankie Dettori at Royal Ascot
With 77 Royal Ascot victories to his name, and hoping to add more in his final year, Frankie Dettori is the second most successful jockey ever at the Royal Meeting. A favourite with the crowd, who adore his charm, enthusiasm and trademark flying dismount, he will be much missed in the future. But for now, let’s remember some of his key Royal Ascot moments:
1987 - Frankie has his first Royal Ascot ride on Merle in the Royal Hunt Cup, finishing sixth
1990 - His first winner - Markofdistinction in the Queen Anne Stakes
1992 - First Gold Cup victory on Drum Taps
1994 - Guides Lochsong to an effortless victory in the King’s Stand Stakes
1995 - Frankie’s only Royal Ascot winner for Queen Elizabeth II - Phantom Gold in the Ribblesdale Stakes
1995 - So Factual wins the Cork & Orrery Stakes, Frankie’s first winner at the Royal Meeting for Godolphin
1997 - Leading rider at Royal Ascot for the first time. He also claims the title in 1998 and 1999
2000 - Frankie misses riding at Royal Ascot following a plane crash but is in attendance on crutches to see Dubai Millennium win the Prince of Wales’s Stakes
2001 - Back in the Royal Ascot Winners’ Enclosure on Fantastic Light in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes
2003 - Leading rider at the Royal Meeting again and also in 2004
2011 - Rewilding wins an epic renewal of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes beating So You Think
2015 - 50th Royal Ascot winner with Osaila in the Sandringham Stakes
2015 - Undrafted wins the Diamond Jubilee Stakes – a first winner for Wesley Ward
2016 - Lady Aurelia storms to victory in the Queen Mary Stakes
2019 - Leading rider for the first time since 2004 with seven winners over the week
2020 - Alpine Star wins the Coronation Stakes meaning Frankie has won all eight Group 1 races at Royal Ascot, a unique feat
2022 - Inspiral wins the Coronation Stakes, his most recent winner taking him to 77 in total
