A History of Ascot
Over three centuries Ascot has both set and raised the standard for racecourses.
It has evolved from the far-sighted vision of a Queen from a distant era into a byword for horse racing of the highest quality The palpable sense of glamour, pageantry and history, underpinned by Ascot’s outstanding modern facilities, offers an experience like no other.
It all began more than 300 years ago, in 1711, when the first horse races were staged on a piece of heathland that Queen Anne had identified as a suitable place to run horses On Saturday 11th August of that year, seven horses lined up to compete for the inaugural ‘Her Majesty’s Plate’.
That piece of heathland has evolved into one of the world’s most famous sporting theatres. Ascot’s first four-day event, from which the formal Royal Meeting would eventually spring, took place in 1768
In 1825, King George IV suggested that the reigning monarch could travel in a horse-drawn carriage from the racecourse’s Golden Gates, and down the Straight Mile, to open Royal Ascot each day. And so the Royal Procession – one of Royal Ascot’s most famous and beloved traditions – was born.
1910’s Royal Meeting, which came a few weeks after the death of King Edward VII, became known as ‘Black Ascot’. Racegoers attended in mourning attire as a mark of respect to the late monarch, who occupies a place in Ascot’s history as one of its most passionate supporters
In 1939, the first racing fixture staged separately from the Royal Meeting took place at Ascot. 1951 saw the launch of The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which is staged every July and is one of the most prestigious middle-distance races in Europe, and since 2011 Ascot has hosted QIPCO British Champions Day – the star-studded championship finale to the Flat season.
Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver, Golden, Diamond and Platinum Jubilees were all celebrated at Royal Ascot and the feature Group 1 race on the final day was permanently renamed The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in her memory
In 2006, Queen Elizabeth II opened the new Grandstand, heralding a modern era for the racecourse and consolidating its position as one of the finest racing venues in the world.
From Frankel to Black Caviar and from Brigadier Gerard to Yeats, Ascot has crowned so many champions across so many eras. It’s been a fantastic story, and we can’t wait to find out what the next chapters hold.

ROYAL ASCOT BLUSH
David Howden Welcome
Welcome to Ascot. If you want to watch the best jockeys, best horses and best trainers strutting their stuff this is the place to come.
Royal Ascot isn’t just the pinnacle of British racing but the pinnacle of racing full stop. And it fires the starting gun for a Great British summer
So it’s a great privilege to be Official Partner during Royal Ascot for our fourth year But let’s be honest. We don’t just come here for the racing or to have a flutter. We’re here because this is where magical memories are made.
This year marks our thirtieth anniversary - each decade punctuated by a famous Gold Cup win. In 1994, as Arcadian Heights reached for the skies, our company took its first faltering steps –three people, one dog and a big dream about insurance as a force for good.
By 2004 as Frankie made his legendary flying dismount from Papineau, Howden was cantering round the paddock having grown to 250 people and built vast expertise in bloodstock and equine insurance.
In 2014 when Leading Light edged out Estimate, we hit our stride – upping our numbers to some 2000 people and taking our experience to all parts of the world.
And in 2024, as racing fans watch from the stands, we’re galloping ahead. Not just the fifth largest employee-owned firm in the UK. But a global firm of more than 17,500 people in 55 countries.
Today our sporting stable is not just expanding - with sponsorship of race meetings from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain to Australia – but broadening. And I’m delighted that next year we’ll be sponsoring the British and Irish Lions tour down under
In 30 years lots has changed but one thing has not. Ascot Racecourse and Howden remain a great fit. Two great British companies with global reach.
But perhaps there’s something else that draws us here. It’s the reason I’ve a picture of Ascot legend Frankel by Chris Levine hanging outside my office. And, actually, if you’re lucky enough to be in the Winning Connections’ Room you’ll find another of Chris’s powerful images of Frankel that we donated. The point is when you combine terrific talent with great opportunities the impossible can happen,
And that’s why there’s nowhere our clients and guests would rather come for a grand day out.
“I won’t tell you where I’m placing my bets but here’s a tip for free. By the time the majestic Gold Cup is handed over to its next worthy winner, the glorious summer of ‘24 will already be one to remember.”

Race Histories
2.30pm The Norfolk Stakes (Group 2)
First run in 1843, this race was formerly known as the New Stakes and staged over a distance of just under four furlongs. In 1973 it was renamed after the Duke of Norfolk, Queen Elizabeth II’s Representative at Ascot between 1945 and 1972. For two-year-olds, the race was promoted to Group 2 status in 2006. Last year it was won by 150-1 outsider Valiant Force.
3.05pm The King George V Stakes (Handicap)
Like the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes, this is a handicap for middle distance performers, staged over one and a half miles for three-year-olds only The inaugural running was in July 1946, as part of the fixture list expansion to include racing in July, September and October, before the race was transferred to Royal Ascot in 1948. The 2020 winner Hukum proved better than a handicapper in time, going on to Group 1 success. Meanwhile Desert Hero won the 2023 renewal for Their Majesties The King and The Queen – their first winner at the Royal Meeting.
3.45pm The Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2)
This race, mirroring the conditions of the Oaks, is named after the fourth Baron Ribblesdale, Master of the Buckhounds between 1892 and 1895 First run in 1919, this race was originally staged over a mile for three and four-year-olds. It is now restricted to Classic generation fillies and run over the longer distance of a mile and a half.
4.25pm The Gold Cup (Group 1) (British Champions Series)
Founded in 1807, the Gold Cup (which, contrary to popular opinion is not called the “Ascot Gold Cup”) is the oldest and one of the most prestigious races at Royal Ascot. Staged over the marathon trip of two-and-a-half miles, the race is a stiff test of stamina and attracts the very best staying horses in Europe. Many horses have distinguished themselves with multiple Gold Cup wins, enhancing the race’s reputation as a specialists’ event. Sagaro won three times in the 1970s and Stradivarius claimed his third straight success in 2020 but Yeats still stands tallest of all, becoming a four-time winner in 2009. Estimate won the 2013 Gold Cup for Queen Elizabeth II, becoming the first horse to win the Gold Cup for a reigning monarch.
5.05pm The Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
First run in 1928 over the Straight Mile of the Royal Hunt Cup course and run under similar conditions today. Open to three-year-old colts and geldings only, the Britannia is almost as popular these days as the Royal Hunt Cup.
5.40pm The Hampton Court Stakes (Group 3)
This 10-furlong event, restricted to three-year-olds, was originally part of the Saturday Heath Day card, under the title of the New Stakes, and joined Royal Ascot as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. It was rechristened The Tercentenary Stakes in 2011, when the racecourse celebrated 300 years since its inauguration and was also promoted from Listed to Group 3 in tandem. The race reverted back to being the Hampton Court Stakes in 2017.
6.15pm The Buckingham Palace Stakes (Handicap)
One of six races added to Royal Ascot for 2020, the seven-furlong Buckingham Palace Handicap was reintroduced to the card having been lost when The Commonwealth Cup was created in 2015. Available to three-year-olds and upwards, it was first established in 2002 when a fifth day was added to the meeting to mark the Golden Jubilee. In 2020 it opened the Royal Meeting and is now retained permanently as part of the expanded programme and concludes the Thursday card.

Charities to Benefit From Bookmaker Profits
5.05pm Britannia Stakes
For the fifth year running, many of Britain’s leading bookmakers will donate all profits from the Britannia Stakes to charities and good causes.
Introduced in 2020, this initiative has seen Betting & Gaming Council members raise nearly £3 million for a range of good causes including Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Marie Curie, NHS Charities Together, SportsAid, Sue Ryder, the Army Benevolent Fund, RAF Benevolent Fund and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
This year, the beneficiaries will be Ascot Racecourse Supports, Churchill Lines Foundation, Go Racing Green, HEROS, Missing People and Prostate Cancer UK.
Bookmakers have also committed that if they do not make a profit on the race, they will make a combined donation of £200,000 to be split amongst this year’s nominated charities
The bookmakers involved are Flutter (Paddy Power, Betfair, Sky Bet), Entain (Ladbrokes, Coral), Evoke (888, William Hill), Kindred (Unibet), Betway, Rank Group (Grosvenor Sport), Virgin Bet, Fitzdares, Star Sports, QuinnBet, Tote and Bet with Ascot. They will hand over all profits made from win and each-way bets, after levy and duties are deducted, on the big-field heritage handicap which is the fifth race on today’s card.
Ascot Racecourse Supports, the racecourse’s charity and community programme, has been a previous beneficiary of the initiative with donations funding legacy projects including the sponsorship of an arena for equine assisted learning charity, Strength and Learning through Horses In March 2024, a permanent sensory room was also opened to enable families with children who have neuro-diverse conditions and who may need a calm sensory space, to fully enjoy a raceday.
Alastair Warwick, Chief Executive at Ascot Racecourse, said: “We are hugely grateful once more to the members of the Betting and Gaming Council involved in this generous initiative which has raised so much money for worthwhile causes since 2020. We are thrilled that Ascot Racecourse Supports will be a beneficiary again and look forward to being able to further support our community programme in 2024 and beyond.”
Ron and Ragstone
By J A McGrath 96-year-old former jockey Ron Hutchinsonreflects on his Gold Cup victory half a century ago.
Australian jockey Ron Hutchinson rode over 1,000 winners in Europe during a visit that extended to 18 years, yet for him, there is one win that towers above them all the Gold Cup triumph on Ragstone for the Duke of Norfolk at the 1974 Royal Meeting.
On the 50th anniversary of Ragstone’s Gold Cup, ‘Hutchy,’ as he is universally known, recalls a day when his retaining owners were so overjoyed they broke accepted rules on decorum, baring their emotions and feelings after the race. Breaking all protocol, the Duchess ran out on to the course to lead in their winner
“The Duke had said to me that the only race he really wanted to win was the Gold Cup at Ascot. I remember him saying ‘You can have the Derby and the other big races, the race I’d love to win is the Gold Cup.’ When Ragstone won, the Duke was absolutely delighted. It was a dream come true for him.
“It was his one ambition as an owner, and I was so happy to be able to help him achieve that. The Gold Cup was in June 1974, and he died the following January He was 66 Unfortunately, he didn’t have long to appreciate his greatest day on the turf,” he reflects.
Ron Hutchinson is a sprightly 96 years of age, living these days near Cranbourne, an outer suburb of sprawling Melbourne in the southern state of Victoria. He swims half a mile four times a week and regularly attends race meetings at Flemington and Caulfield, where he is a life member and rightly feted in racing circles
His memory is amazing, his recollection of certain events detailed and historically accurate. He first came to Europe, aged 32, as retained jockey to Paddy Prendergast in Ireland, and although landing an English Classic on his first ride in England the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, aboard the Prendergast-trained Martial he accepted an offer to ride for the Norfolks.
Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk, was a formidable figure. He had served as Agricultural Secretary for four years in Winston Churchill’s war cabinet, he organised the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, then the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. He also arranged the funeral of Churchill, as well as taking part in the investiture of Prince Charles as the Prince of Wales
In sporting circles, although a great cricket enthusiast, he was a surprise choice to manage the MCC team to tour Australia in the winter of 1962-63. And, on top of all that, he was also Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot Racecourse for 27 years.
Ron never regretted leaving Ireland after his initial stint with Prendergast. “I liked Ireland very, very much but the cold weather was hard to take. I had been approached by Bernard van Cutsem (the trainer of Park Top, the 1969 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner), who asked whether I would be interested in riding for his friends the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk.”
Ragstone, who was to become the banner horse for the Duke of Norfolk, was not an overnight staying star, though when lifting the Gold Cup he was recording his seventh win on the trot His progression through the ranks was gradual, one step at a time, and his prep races for his Royal Ascot assignment included victories in the Aston Park Stakes at Newbury and the Henry II Stakes at Sandown Park. His tendency to pull hard in his races was seen as a drawback over two and a half miles.
Ron takes up the Gold Cup story: “We thought he had a good chance. While he wasn’t a great
staying horse, he was a useful one. He hadn’t gone beyond a mile and three-quarters and there were doubts about whether he would stay the trip. So the Duke decided to buy a horse called Hornet as a pacemaker for Ragstone.
“It worked out well. I sat behind Hornet and followed him, and at the right point in the straight, I pulled out and went past him. It was straightforward after that. Tommy Carter did a great job on the pacemaker. It worked out exactly as we thought it would. Our worry beforehand was that Ragstone could get excited. But he was cool on the day. It was meant to be.”
The excitement generated post-race carried on into the night. “There was a great party that night and everyone associated with the horse and the stable was invited. It was a very happy day for the Duke and Duchess and all of us,” he adds.
In his relaxed Aussie tones, Ron Hutchinson concludes: “It is wonderful to think we can still look back on such a great day. 50 years is a long time…and I’m still here. I think most of them have gone to God. I cherish those memories of that day at Royal Ascot so much.”

Feature Race Analysis
Fan favourite Kyprios will face nine rivals in the 2024 renewal of the Gold Cup and Aidan O’Brien’s star held off Mojo Star in 2022 to claim victory. He missed most of last season’s action through injury but still looks the one to beat in this competitive field.
Wathnan Racing seem to be developing a strong-hand in British Racing and took home glory last year with Courage Mon Ami. This year connections solely rely on Gregory who was a winner last year in the Queen’s Vase. Grade 1 NH winner Vauban was another who saw success at this meeting last term when proving well-handicapped in the Copper Horse Handicap. He should stay this trip.
Recent Sagaro Stakes winner Coltrane looked back to his best when defying the mare Caius Chorister by a head. The pair looked closely matched on form that day and finished ahead of both Sweet William and Trueshan. These four could all be battling it out for the minor honours.
Trawlerman is untried over today’s trip but ran creditably when tackling two miles in the Dubai Gold Cup, finishing third with Enemy back in seventh. It would take a leap of faith to see those placings reversed.
The field is concluded by the hat-trick seeking Prydwen who was an impressive Marathon winner at the All-Weather Championships, before beating Tuesday’s Ascot Stakes winner Pledgeofallegiance over an extended two miles at Southwell. If he can transfer this form to turf, he could reward supporters.
Last year’s winner Courage Mon Ami
Retraining of Racehorses Donation
This year, as part of the Ascot Racecourse Supports community and charity programme, we are delighted that for every race our Racing Ambassador, Ryan Moore, wins during Royal Ascot, we will donate £5,000 to Retraining of Racehorses, British horse racing’s official charity for the welfare of horses who have retired from racing.
David Catlow, Retraining of Racehorses Managing Director, said, “We are thrilled that Ascot Racecourse Supports has chosen RoR as a nominated charity for this year’s Royal Ascot. RoR’s mission is to safeguard the wellbeing of former racehorses for life, and we cannot do it without the vital and very generous support of organisations such as Ascot Racecourse.
“It promises to be a very exciting Royal Ascot for RoR. With each winner ridden by the brilliant Ryan Moore raising funds for RoR, we will certainly be cheering him on from the sidelines.”
Ryan Moore, added “I’m delighted to be an ambassador for Ascot Racecourse Supports and to help with the work it does in the community Hopefully, I can raise a bit of money at the Royal Meeting for an important cause in Retraining of Racehorses.”
We wish Ryan the best of luck with his 7 rides today:

DRAW 9
The way he made light work in the end of two 1m4f novice races on AW last autumn marked him down as a very serious prospect; handicap win at Goodwood (1m6f, good to firm; smart form) last month confirmed that in spades, as class and stamina came into play late on; 2m+ looks sure to suit and, although this company is of a radically higher order than in those three races, it is hard to put a ceiling right now on what he might achieve.

Race Summary:
WHISTLEJACKET tasted defeat at short odds on his debut over 6f at the Curragh back in April, but he quickly made amends with an impressive victory in Listed company over 5f there most recently, beating the reopposing Arizona Blaze into second. With that effort still fresh in the mind, this full-brother to Little Big Bear gets the vote to emulate his sire, No Nay Never, who took this prize back in 2013. There was little to separate Shareholder (first) and Moving Force (second) when the pair met over 5f at Beverley earlier this month and, with the latter-mentioned 7lb better off on this occasion, it would be no surprise if he were able to get the better of his old adversary and emerge as the main danger to the selection. Tropical Storm and Milford are a couple of others who warrant respect.

Race Summary:
Aidan O’Brien’s Chantilly heads the early betting after his Newbury third and, as a son of Galileo, the step up in trip may bring some improvement. However, he may struggle to reverse placings with the runner-up from that contest, PONIROS, who also has plenty of scope for benefiting from an extra couple of furlongs and the draw has been kind to the son of Golden Horn. Naval Force is trained by Donnacha O’Brien and was value for further when losing lengths at every bend before staying on to score at Roscommon over shorter and he could go well at a big price if he keeps to the straight and narrow. Going The Distance and Persica are others to consider, though there is a chance they may now be in the grip of the handicapper.

Reserves At Royal Ascot
The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception.
This year, reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purpose of this is to ensure that owners have the opportunity to run their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage.
Up to three reserves can replace non-runners any time up to 1.00pm the day before the race. The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the national media and bookmakers have to prepare markets in the full knowledge of the fields at this stage.
Each reserve horse is given a number and a draw at the 48-hour stage. In the event of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawn horse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers going up to 33 although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners.
Today’s race with a reserve running is The Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap)GREY CUBAN & LAUTREC
Ascot Racecourse is giving a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the best turned out horse, and a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the winning horse.

Race Summary:
DIAMOND RAIN may not have been out of place if going for the Oaks last month, but she has been saved for this instead following a Listed success at Newbury, where the runner-up has come out and franked the form since. A narrow winner on debut here over 1m, Charlie Appleby’s unbeaten filly should have too much for Kalpana, who was a creditable second in Listed company at Newmarket last month and should improve for the step up in trip You Got To Me has strong claims on her penultimate success at Lingfield, despite being outclassed in the Oaks, and she can uphold form with the reopposing Rubies Are Red (second), and Danielle (third).

The
Race Summary:
The classy KYPRIOS was a popular winner of this in 2022, a campaign which saw him add three further Group 1’s onto an already stellar CV Injury kept him out for much of 2023, but he’s been impressive on both of his starts this year, albeit at a lower level, and the son of Galileo can cement his place as the leading stayer once again. Conditions might not be ideal for Trawlerman, who beat the selection here on Champions Day in October before returning with a creditable third in the Dubai Gold Cup in March, but that won’t be the case for Coltrane. He defeated Caius Chorister (second) and Sweet William (third) in the Sagaro here last month which should have left him cherry-ripe, while unexposed stayer Gregory and the Willie Mullins-trained Vauban are not to be taken lightly either.

Race Summary:
Arguably the most competitive three-year-old handicap of the season and this year’s renewal looks as open as ever. Native Warrior scored a shade cosily when opening his account in a maiden at Nottingham last month and makes his handicap bow off what looks a workable mark. The son of Wootton Bassett looks nicely drawn in stall 31 and he must enter the reckoning. However, QIRAT was slightly more taking when overcoming a troubled passage at Goodwood in late May and edges the verdict. A 4lb rise in the ratings for that handicap bow may underestimate Ralph Beckett’s charge and another big pot could be headed his way. The hat-trick seeking Volterra isn’t taken lightly upped in class, while a first-time visor could bring some improvement out of the Aidan O’Brien-trained Air Commander. Fellow Irish raider Follow Me arrives on the back of a career-best performance having landed the spoils at the Curragh and the Shalaa colt makes more each-way appeal than most.

Race Summary:
King’s Gambit won a tough handicap at Newbury in good style. He should prove competitive in this higher grade, but preference is FIRST LOOK who brings Group 1 form to the table. Andre Fabre’s colt took a big step forward when runner-up in the French Derby at Chantilly, and he seems versatile on all surfaces. The Blue Riband Trial winner at Epsom, Bellum Justum struggled in the Epsom Derby, but could bounce back to form today, while the Ballydoyle colt Portland is another down in trip after landing a Listed race at Leopardstown. Taraj finished a creditable third in a Group 3 contest at Leopardstown over 1m2f on his return to action and is another worth considering.

Race Summary:
Richard Hannon has won two of the last four runnings and he has both Dark Thirty and Tacarib Bay entered this year, who could both go well off their current marks. Fresh has won here three times, twice over C&D, with the latest off 10lb higher in September 2022, and he showed signs of a return to form when beaten less than two lengths at Haydock last time, but a chance is taken on ALZAHIR. Danny Tudhope rides for David O’Meara, who has four runners, and he might be the jockey’s pick after returning with a three-length fourth at Chester, despite pulling too hard and failing to last home. Likely to do better after his first start in eight months, he may be the surprise package. Early favourite English Oak strolled away with a lesser race at Haydock and while he is 9lb higher following that success, Ed Walker’s colt is expected to mount a serious challenge.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Races at Royal Ascot
Winners of the following races will earn automatic berths, travel and paid entry fees into the equivalent races at the 2024 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar:
•The Queen Anne Stakes
•The King Charles III Stakes
•The Prince of Wales’s Stakes
•The Norfolk Stakes
All four races will be televised live and streamed in the U.S. as part of NBC Sports Group’s live coverage of Royal Ascot.
The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series presented by America’s Best Racing consists of the best races from around the world and awards each winner an automatic and free entry into the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
It’s simple, they win and they’re in.
In recent history, Queen Anne Stakes winners Barathea and Goldikova have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile while Prince of Wales’s Stakes winners Fantastic Light and Highland Reel went on to be successful in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
The winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, for two-year-olds over five furlongs, will receive a free berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint while the King Charles III Stakes victor gains an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which will be run at 5 1/2 furlongs.
Last year Valiant Force, winner of the Norfolk Stakes, took up that invitation and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint behind fellow Royal Ascot winner Big Evs, who was victorious in the Windsor Castle Stakes. In fact four of the first six in that race ran at the Royal Meeting, including Queen Mary Stakes winner Crimson Advocate and No Nay Mets, who was fifth in the Norfolk Stakes
Meanwhile Warm Heart, who won the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at the Royal Meeting last year, went on to be second in the Filly & Mare Turf behind Inspiral, herself a runner-up here last June. There continues to be a strong line of correlation between success at Royal Ascot and taking that form to the Breeders’ Cup.

Equine Welfare at Royal Ascot
The safety and wellbeing of horses and jockeys is paramount at Royal Ascot and in recent years several major changes have been made to improve welfare standards.
Introduced for the first time at Royal Ascot last year, every horse running throughout the week will undergo an enhanced pre-race examination carried out on arrival at the stables. The process involves:
• A cardiac assessment
• A trot up over 25 metres in a straight line
• An examination of the musculoskeletal system
These examinations are designed to support the work of the whole sport to reduce avoidable risk, adding an extra layer of protection so we know horses are lining up in the best possible health post-travel.
Ascot has invested significant amounts to improve equine welfare in recent years. During the 2004-2006 redevelopment a safer racetrack was created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossings over the track.
In 2016, further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area. This benefits from extra space, maximum shade and is also equipped with equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Five specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every day at Royal Ascot alongside three equine ambulances which are dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.
