Star Rating Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance. Official BHA Rating The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

PLAY SMARTER
BURTONWOOD hasn’t had much go his way so far this term but he goes well over this C&D and should get a strong pace to aim at, so he could arrive late to land this wide-open sprint. Rose Bandit and Atyaaf arrive in good order and should make their presence felt from single-figure draws.

SOPHIE’S STAR has a double penalty to overcome but posted a fairly useful level of form when scoring over C&D at the start of the month so gets the nod. Both Dreams of Thunder and Gentle Ellen have more to offer and are sure to have a say though, while a market move for one of the newcomers would put a slightly different slant on things.

PLAY SMARTER
GNAT ALLEY more than hinted at ability on her C&D debut 11 days ago and is taken to leave that bare form behind and strike at the second time of asking. Frisky has shown a fair level of ability on both starts and looks sure to play a prominent role. Rockprincess and Proclivity are newcomers who need keeping a close eye on in the betting.

PLAY SMARTER
This stiffer test promises to suit CLODOVEA, who put in good late work when runner-up on her nursery debut at Pontefract last week. That is by far the most persuasive piece of form on offer here. Kenyan Commander ran no sort of a race in a York seller last time, but he has each-way claims judged on what he showed on his penultimate start. On The River is another with place possibilities.

The hat-trick beckons for JOHNNY BOOM, who has made significant progress upped to this trip on his last 2 starts and an 8lb rise for his latest success at Yarmouth is tolerable. Love of Zoffany arrives in good form and should make his presence felt once more, while Can Can Girl and Berry Edge are live each-way contenders.

PLAY SMARTER
DANDY’S ANGEL has won just one of her 16 starts, but she may well add to her tally here following last month’s near miss at Hamilton. John Wainwright’s charge remains feasibly treated despite being nudged up 2lb. Contrast hasn’t shown much in 2 starts so far this season, but the handicapper has shown mercy and he’ll have serious claims if returning to form, while Hooflepuff also merits respect.
