T U E S DAY 2 0 T H J U LY 2 0 21 OFFICIAL PROGR AMME

WELCOME W E LC O M I N G O U R G U E S T S B AC K TO C C R ! Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse for our first fixture open to the general public since March 2020. It’s been a while! It has undoubtedly been a difficult time for all of us up and down the country and we’re just delighted to be able to offer our customers a sense of normality once again. Thank you for your patience. However, with Covid still very much with us, we do all need to continue play our part. As such, we would encourage you to help by continuing with some straightforward best practices being recommended at all racecourses. These will benefit you and your fellow racegoers today. Therefore, please use your discretion to wear a face mask indoors and in busier areas; please continue to use the hand sanitisers available, and please still bear in mind the good principle of social distancing. The guidance around “hands, face, space fresh air” remains as important as ever. Thank you. The six scheduled races this evening have attracted 56 runners, and they’ll all be looking to win a share of the £62,000 prize money pot that’s on offer. The feature of our card is race three at 7.05pm - the £19,000 “Betsi” stakes over six furlongs. Nine good sprinters are in the line-up for this competitive test of speed and three of them have won here before. One of those, Mick Appleby’s Nigel Nott, has actually won three times at CCR but he’s yet to win in this Class 2 grade in 24 career runs. Consequently, Full Authority may be the answer here. Previously with Sir Michael Stoute, this Richard Fahey-trained four year old has faced two very difficult tasks at Ascot so far this season. But the colt was in good form at the back end of last year including a runner up spot in a similar race to today’s contest here in September. He was the favourite that day. We hope you have a fabulous time with your friends and family this evening. Our next fixture is on Tuesday afternoon, 3rd August and we’d be thrilled to see you again for all the colour and excitement of Summer horseracing at CCR. Fraser Garrity Racecourse Manager

Star Ratings Explained each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

★★★★★ selected to win the race. ★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed. ★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ★✩✩✩✩ can be given little or no chance.

GU I D E TO R AC I N G at c h e l m s fo R d c i t y Racing at chelmsford city takes place on the flat over distances from five furlongs to two miles – there are eight furlongs in a mile. Whilst most flat races take place on turf, racing here takes place on a synthetic surface. as the surface tends to have better drainage than turf it is easier to produce consistent racing ground whilst during cold weather it is also far less prone to freezing – hence the generic term all Weather racing. Races over five, six and seven furlongs tend to be a pure test of speed, with races over a mile and further better suited to horses with stamina. there are many different types of races but all are based on the sex, age or ability of the horse. the most common is a handicap – a race where each horse is allocated a weight, according to its ability. the best horse in the race will carry the biggest weight; theoretically giving each horse an equal chance. the skill is trying to work out which horses are better than the handicapper thinks they are! maiden races are for horses which have yet to win a race. often aimed at two-year-olds, but also open to older horses, the skill here is to decipher what can sometimes be very limited form. claiming and selling races allow the connections to offer their horse for sale. after the race the runners are offered for sale at the price printed next to their name in the racecard. other types of races include Group and listed races which are aimed at the very best horses in training and the classics – the 1000 and 2000 Guineas, the derby, the oaks and the st leger. if you have any questions about today’s racing please feel free to speak to any member of the raceday team.

TWICE AS LIKELY wasn’t well placed at Chepstow last time and she can bounce back here. A three-time winner on the all-weather, she has to be taken seriously from a low draw. Breezyandbright is reasonably lightly raced and in form so he looks to be a big danger. Signorinadoro would be of interest if the market speaks in her favour.

ALJADY has contested very competitive handicaps and pattern races since going close over C&D back in April. He should find this easier than recent challenges and looks the one to beat off a workable PLAY SMARTER mark. Stylish Performer progressed rapidly on tapeta earlier in the year and he should appreciate the switch to polytrack so has to be respected. Sir Oliver has to be taken seriously too.
