It is great to see you all back at the Home of Jump racing for what is set to be four days of thrilling action, and it all kicks off today on Champion Day.
Over the next few days no fewer than five Championship Races will unfold on the track and the first of those comes this afternoon at 3.30pm with the Unibet Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy. This year’s renewal will see one of the hottest names in the sport in Constitution Hill, trained by Nicky Henderson, take on the Irish challenger State Man for Willie Mullins
The unbeaten Constitution Hill returns to Cheltenham having won the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle here in 2022, while State Man travels to Prestbury Park off the back of beating two-time Champion Hurdle winner Honeysuckle when galloping to victory last time out. It’s sure to be a red-hot renewal which will set the tone for all the racing yet to come
Speaking of the champion mare Honeysuckle, she too will be back on the sport’s biggest stage this afternoon, when lining up in the Close Brother’s Mares’ Hurdle race at 4.10pm. What an icon she has been for our sport over the last few years, simultaneously winning some of the biggest races out there while also working her way into the hearts of the nation. She’ll take on another Champion Hurdle winner in Epatante as well as last year’s winner Marie’s Rock in what is sure to be an incredible spectacle for racing fans
As always, our thanks go to our raceday sponsors who continue to support this wonderful event. Today, they include Unibet, Sky Bet, Sporting Life, Ultima, Close Brothers and Boodles We wish all of them a wonderful day with us here.
We are also delighted that today’s National Hunt Steeple Chase Challenge Cup at 5.30pm will be run in the name of WellChild. The national charity for
seriously ill children is headquartered in Cheltenham and we are honoured that they remain our official charity partner for 2023
Make sure you head over to the parade ring from 1030am, where a panel of expert punters will be letting you in on their best bets of the day. Later at 1230pm, the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) parade will take place, giving you the chance to get up close and personal with some racing stars of years gone by. It’s not to be missed!
Following a successful launch at the November Meeting, the ‘Love our Turf’ campaign has returned for the four days of the Cheltenham Festival. The initiative seeks to reinforce and strengthen the relationship between the Home of Jump Racing and our local community This will be most notable across all main routes back to the town, where you will find wayfinding ushers, street entertainment, enhanced cleaning and an increased number of toilets along the way We’d like to sign-off by thanking each and every one of you for joining us for what is the highlight of our calendar. Additionally, the impact that the event and your attendance has on the local community is staggering, with a new report carried out by The University of Gloucestershire revealing that in 2022, The Festival brought an estimated £274million to the local economy.
For now, we wish you all a wonderful day with us here on Champion Day. We already can’t wait to do it all over again tomorrow.
MARTIN ST QUINTON IAN RENTON Chairman Managing Director, Jockey ClubHello and welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse for the week we have all been waiting for!

‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Decide the amount –or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 12.30pm – 12.45pm
The parade showcases the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to horses when they finish their racing careers, thanks to the work of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing
Today’s parade features some familiar names who have already adapted to a new career, notably the Gold Cup winner, Coneygree, and Cyrname, formerly the highest rated chaser in training.
To help stimulate demand for former racehorses within the wider equestrian market, RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball.
For more information visit: www.ror.org.uk
1. BARBERS SHOP - ridden by Katie Jerram-Hunnable
21-year-old by Saddlers’ Hall, formerly trained by Nicky Henderson
Breeder – Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Bred by the Queen Mother, Barbers Shop raced in the late Queen Elizabeth’s colours with distinction. An eight-time winner, he was also placed in a King George and a Hennessy. Since his retirement from racing in 2012, he has been with Katie Jerram-Hunnable and under her care he became one of the leading former racehorses to compete in showing classes. Among his many successes was champion at Hickstead and three times winner and champion at Royal Windsor Horse Show. He is now retired from competitive showing.
2. BALTHAZAR KING – ridden by Michael Andrews
19-year-old by King’s Theatre, formerly trained by Philip Hobbs
Breeder- Sunnyhill Stud
During a long and distinguished racing career Balthazar King won 16 times, including the Cross-Country Chase at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival. After recovering from a life-threatening injury incurred at Aintree, he was retired and enjoyed several seasons hunting with Izzi Beckett, wife of trainer Ralph. He has now moved on to be a ‘schoolmaster’ for Michael Andrews, The Jockey Club’s social media manager, with a view to competing in low-level dressage and show jumping. Michael says: “He is the most charming, loveable and intelligent horse.”
3. CHAMPAGNE FEVER – ridden by Harriet Colderick
16-Year-Old gelding by Stowaway, formerly trained by Willie Mullins Breeder – John P Cahill
Champagne Fever has been a pleasure to retrain and has successfully competed at BE100 level. He has such a great trainable attitude and is an absolute cross-country machine, he loves it. Unsurprisingly given the amazing races he won, he has the most phenomenal gallop and has cantered round the BE100s with the handbrake on and was still well inside the time. Georgia Marsland who shares the ride on him is thoroughly enjoying learning the ropes Eventing on him.
Harriet Colderick says,“We love having him in the yard, he is such a character and is thriving on his active “semi-retirement”, doing a bit of everything, and hacking round the Ashdown Forest where we live, always being much admired as he is such a striking horse”
4. CONEYGREE - ridden by Sara Bradstock
16-year-old by Karinga Bay, formerly trained by Mark Bradstock Breeder - Lord Oaksey
One of the leading staying chasers of his generation and the winner of the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup, Coneygree was retired from racing in February 2019. He adapted quickly to a life outside of racing and since being re-trained by Mark Bradstock’s wife Sara, Coneygree has won several RoR showing classes and twice qualified for the final of the Tattersalls RoR Show Series at Hickstead.
5. CYRNAME – ridden Louise Harwood
11-year-old by Nickname, formerly trained by Paul Nicholls Breeder – S Follain, E Lecoiffier Et Al
The winner of seven races and formerly the highest rated chaser in training Cyrname was retired in May last year
To date he has not put a foot wrong in his retraining and he made an appearance at Blenheim International Horse Trials in September 2022 taking part in a RoR educational dressage display. He is showing a lot of promise in his second career and Charlotte Alexander’s aim is to go eventing, hunting and team chasing with him. Charlotte says: “Cyrname is a complete pet and loves being cuddled and spoilt with treats, he is hugely enthusiastic in everything he does.”
6. GOD’S OWN – ridden by Sherrie Derrick
15-year-old gelding by Oscar, formerly trained by Tom George Breeder – Mrs. Caroline O’ Driscoll
God’s Own ran at the Cheltenham festival for 5 consecutive years from 2014 until his retirement year 2019. On retirement God’s Own was kindly gifted to today’s rider Sherrie. Before starting his second career, God’s Own aka Basil had a lovely well-deserved holiday. Since then, they have quietly and steadily started the retraining journey, God’s Own is rather spirited but has taken to flat work very well and is a quick learner, he is popping a variety of show jumps at home and has xc schooled a few times taking it all in his stride.
Sherrie says,“We have just started to compete in dressage and combined training, and we are planning to do some ODE over the summer”
7. MELON – ridden by Sophie Candy
11-year-old gelding by Medicean, formerly trained by Willie Mullins Breeder – Newsells Park Stud
Melon joined today’s rider Sophie last summer after a very successful career racing trained by Willie Mullins, including four seconds at the Cheltenham Festival. Melon has been an absolute star since he arrived, settling right in and is a gentleman to do anything with. He has taken to team chasing like a duck to water, and while he was a bit of a bridesmaid racing, he has already started racking up the wins team chasing, already taken part in his first Open and will be aiming for the Open Championships this spring with Team Ride Away He is an absolute joy to have around and will hopefully be doing some hunting and showing in the off season from team chasing.
8. NATIVE RIVER – ridden by Emma Vine
13-year-old gelding by Indian River, formerly trained by Colin Tizzard Breeder – Fred Mackey
Following his retirement to Webb Hill Farm, Native River Aka Garfield initially enjoyed a few months out in the field. Since then, Native River has had a rather busy social calendar, he has attended a school prom, the 30th Anniversary of the Rocking Horse Nursery at Newbury Racecourse, Boodles in Bond Street and starred in numerous racecourse parades to mention a few. Alongside this he has transitioned well from racehorse to riding horse and enjoys his hacking and schooling, he absolutely thrives in his work and is a quick learner. He has recently attended dressage clinics and an RoR training day, this season the aim for Emma and Native River is to take part in some RoR showing classes, RoR dressage and jumping.
9. PINEAU DE RE - ridden by Molly Johnstone-Ellis
20-year-old gelding by Maresca Sorrento, formerly trained by Dr Richard Newland Breeder – Michel Hardy
Winner of the 2014 Grand National Pineau De Re retired from racing in 2016. Since then, after a period hunting, he has been competing in eventing at BE Novice level and in dressage, qualifying this year for the RoR Southern Dressage Championships at Blenheim. Pregnancy precludes his regular rider Lizzie Brunt from riding him today, but she says of him: “He is so intelligent, by far the brightest horse I’ve ever ridden. I think this helped him win the National, along with his huge heart.”
10. SAPHIR DU RHEU – ridden by Charlotte Alexander
14-year-old gelding by Al Namix, formerly trained by Paul Nicholls
Breeder - Claude Duval
A Grade 1 winner at Aintree, Saphir Du Rheu has been with Charlotte Alexander since he retired from racing in 2018. Very versatile, he has risen quickly through the eventing ranks to compete at Intermediate level, while in dressage he is about to start competing at medium level and is already doing well at Elementary. He is also doing some show jumping, as well as team chasing. Charlotte says: “Saphy loves life and particularly performing in front of a crowd where he grows another hand and knows everyone is admiring him.”
12-year-old gelding by Stowaway, formerly trained by Olly Murphy
Breeder – J Sheehan
The Worlds End was retired after his last race at Carlisle in December 2021 arriving with today’s rider Charlie IIes shortly afterwards. The Worlds End had an extended holiday and in November last year started his retraining journey. Since they have been back in work, hacking around Devon, hunting and they recently attended their first RoR clinic The plan going forward is to keep working and improving the flatwork and jumping so they can have as much fun in all spheres as possible starting with low level Eventing.
15-year-old gelding by Kayf Tara, formerly trained by Colin Tizzard
Breeder – RF and SD Knipe
Three of Thistlecracks thirteen National Hunt career wins took place at Cheltenham for trainer Colin Tizzard and jockey Tom Scudamore, he amassed career earning of nearly £750,000 from 25 runs on the racetrack.
Thistlecrack is thoroughly enjoying his busy retirement at Fiona Shaw’s having been sent back there by his adoring owners John and Heather Snook. Thistlecrack is hunting, cross country schooling, show jumping and arena eventing - all of which he has taken in his stride. He has shown great enthusiasm for every new challenge and is a joy to have around. His rider Alice Gillard is planning a varied RoR programme for him in the coming months.
16-year-old gelding by Azamour, formerly trained by Paul Nicholls
Bred by the Aga Khan
A Grade 1 winner at Cheltenham, Aintree and Auteuil, Zarkandar amassed almost £1 million in prize money. A half-brother to the Arc winning mare Zarkava, he is known as “Gino” at home and was retired from racing in 2018 when Paul Nicholls gifted Zarkandar to Lucinda Sims. Since then, he has adjusted very well to a slower pace of life, starting as Lucinda’s happy hacker before graduating to dressage and hunter trials. He also competes in showing classes side-saddle under Lucinda’s daughter Olivia, which he really enjoys and is excelling at

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is run over two miles and half a furlong and is contested by the cream of this year’s novice hurdlers. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to the senior ranks. All the runners in this year’s contest will carry 11st 7lb.

Jonbon put up a valiant effort in second but was only ever playing for a silver medal because this race was all about Constitution Hill.

MARINE NATIONALE made it 4 from 4 with more to spare than the winning margin implies in the Royal Bond having conceded first run and, although that form is perhaps not quite as strong as some of the other principals, he has the hallmarks of a potential star and is taken to confirm that view. Facile Vega surrendered his unbeaten record in tame fashion last time but will be a big threat if proving that running all wrong. Diverge is interesting up in grade, with Il Etait Temps also respected.

RACE DESCRIPTION
The Grade 1 Sporting Life
Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Steeple Chase is run over the minimum trip of two miles and features this season’s leading novice chasers, all tackling twelve demanding fences at breathtaking speed. Many great horses in the past have used this race as a stepping-stone to Champion Chase glory the following season and the Arkle is one of the highlights of the whole Festival. As is usual in a Grade 1 chase, all horses carry the same weight – 11st 7lb, with Effernock Fizz as the only mare receiving 7lb.
Edwardstone came into the race as one of the big hopes for the home team and he did not disappoint Coming into the race he had dominated against British opposition and would not be denied on the biggest stage. Backers had a scare when Brave Seasca fell at the fourth, nearly hampering the Alan King eight-year-old however from then on it was plain sailing He took every fence with minimal effort and fairly flew up the hill to take the prize
Run over one mile, seven furlongs & 199 yards. 12 fences to be jumped Total prize fund of £175,000 £98,472 to the winner
Trainers and Jockeys with some of the strongest records in the race over the last 10 years.
The Sporting Life Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase was introduced to The Festival in 1969 as a replacement for the Cotswold Chase. It goes without saying that the race was named in honour of the legendary Arkle, a three-time winner of the Gold Cup in the mid-1960s.
The inaugural race, which was initially run on the second day of The Festival before being switched to its current slot in 1980, was won by the Fred Rimell-trained Chatham who was ridden by the late Terry Biddlecombe. In 1972 Fred Winter and Richard Pitman teamed up to win the Arkle with Pendil, a subsequent dual-winner of Kempton’s King George VI Chase where a race is now named in his honour.
1978 Arkle winner, Alverton, certainly deserves a mention as the Peter Easterby-trained gelding is the only horse in the race’s history to go on to win the prestigious Gold Cup, a feat he achieved 12 months later when ridden by Jonjo O’Neill. Easterby was to win the Arkle twice more with Clayside in 1981 and Ryeman in 1983
The 1991 renewal was notable for a trio of reasons. Firstly, Waterford Castle stepped into become the first sponsor of the race and secondly, the Richard Dunwoody-ridden Remittance Man provided Nicky Henderson with the first of his record seven Arkle winners. But the most noticeable fact was that Remittance Man became the first horse to go on and win the Queen Mother Champion Chase. The Arthur Moore-trained Klarion Davis achieved the same feat in 1995 and 1996.
A. P. McCoy won the first of his three Arkles when partnering the Martin Pipe-trained Or Royal to victory in 1997 and he didn’t have to wait long for his second, following up on Champleve the following year, again for Martin Pipe. Flagship Uberalles gave Paul Nicholls his first Arkle success in 1999 and became the third horse to follow up in the Champion Chase, while Azertyuiop gave Nicholls the double when winning both races in 2003 and 2004
Jessica Harrington’s Moscow Flyer was a hugely popular Arkle winner for Barry Geraghty in 2002, by which time the sponsorship baton had passed to the Irish Independent newspaper. A year later, Moscow Flyer was welcomed back into the Winners’ Enclosure following his success in the
Champion Chase, and again in 2005 when he regained his crown.
In fact, the 2000s proved a hot period for the race as, in addition to Moscow Flyer, Voy Por Ustedes for Alan King and Robert Thornton achieved the Grade 1 double in 2006 and 2007, as did Sizing Europe for Henry de Bromhead and Andrew Lynch in 2010 and 2011
Few will forget Sprinter Sacre’s scintillating success in the 2012 Arkle, which was the Racing Post’s first year of sponsorship, and he has since gone on to establish himself as one of the all-time greats with two victories in the Champion Chase.
The same trainer and jockey teamed up with Simonsig the following year and not only did his victory mean Nicky Henderson became the joint-leading trainer in the race but Barry Geraghty became the winning most rider. Henderson has since moved out on his own as Altior gave his trainer a sixth victory in 2017 before Shishkin made it seven in 2021
Willie Mullins’ Champagne Fever was denied by 33/1 shot Western Warhorse in 2014 but he had no such problems in the following two years as Un De Sceaux and Douvan both landed the prize for Ireland’s Champion Trainer. The brilliant Footpad gave Mullins a third success in 2018, a victory which also moved jockey Ruby Walsh alongside Barry Geraghty on four wins, while 2019’s winner, Duc Des Genievres made it four wins since 2015 for Mullins, Paul Townend in the saddle this time, recording his first Arkle triumph
2020’s renewal was taken by a mare for the first time since Anaglogs Daughter’s 1980 triumph as Put The Kettle On emerged victorious in brave style. In 2021 Shishkin followed in the footsteps of Sprinter Sacre and Altior to win the race for top trainer Nicky Henderson. Alan King returned to the roll of honour with Edwardstone, who gave him a third success in the race

EL FABIOLO and Jonbon (won) were separated by only a neck in a Grade 1 novice hurdle at Aintree last spring. The former’s comfortable defeat of Banbridge at Leopardstown last month is narrowly the best piece of 2m novice chase form this season so he’s taken to edge out Nicky Henderson’s charge this time. Saint Roi gets the vote for third.

RACE DESCRIPTION
The Ultima is a Premier Handicap and is the first Handicap Steeple Chase of The Festival. The aim of a handicap is to ensure a level playing field for all - achieved by allocating different weights to each of the runners based on what they have achieved on the racecourse so far All horses possess an official BHA rating that reflects their relative abilities. The higher the rating, the bigger the weight the horse has to carry – see how top-weight Fanion d’Estruval, rated 155, carries 3lb more than Happygolucky, rated 152.
9 of the past 11 winners wore headgear
5 of the past 9 winners were novices
9 of the past 13 winners carried 10-10 or more
Not many would have called the winner of last year’s Ultima three fences from home. Corach Rambler found himself stuck behind a wall of horses turning for home but under a collected ride from Derek Fox, he began to pick up his rivals one by one coming into the straight He really hit top gear inside the final few hundred yards and will have no issues going over further in the future He looks set to run this year and may well go on to the Grand National in a few weeks time.
Run over three miles, one furlong. 20 fences to be jumped Total prize fund of £125,000 £70,337 to the winner

PLAY SMARTER
One of the few races Britain has dominated and the thriving INTO OVERDRIVE looks the pick of the home team. He continued his remarkable progress when immediately resuming winning ways in the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby on Boxing Day and his assured jumping/battling qualities are big attributes for a race of this nature. Corach Rambler was a most impressive winner of this last year and has presumably been kept fresh with this event in mind, with Happygolucky also high on the shortlist.
The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.

The third Grade 1 race on today’s card, the Unibet Champion Hurdle is the historic Championship race for two-mile hurdlers and is the highestquality race of its type run anywhere in the world. The crème de la crème of Europe’s speed hurdlers will all be in the line-up chasing a first prize of £253,215. All of the runners are set to carry 11st 10lb.
28 of the past 33 winners won last time out
28 of the past 40 winners were aged 6 or 7
9 of the past 13 winners had run no more than 10 times over hurdles
Honeysuckle made it a perfect 15-15 when bolting up in last year’s Champion Hurdle. The Queen of Ireland made light work of her nine rivals to win readily by 3 1/2 lengths from former Champion Hurdle winner Epatante She exhibited her usual race winning move when kicking clear of the field rounding the home turn and despite her putting in a slightly sketchy jump at the last, victory was never really in doubt
Run over two miles, eighty-seven yards. 8 hurdles to be jumped Total prize fund of £450,000 £253,215 to the winner
Trainers and Jockeys with some of the strongest records in the race over the last 10 years.
The Unibet Champion Hurdle is without doubt the most prestigious hurdle race in the calendar. Run over a distance of two miles and 87 yards, with eight flights to be jumped, the race was first run in 1927.
That inaugural race was won by Blaris, earning connections the grand sum of £365 Twelve months later, Brown Jack added his name to the Roll of Honour before switching codes to win the Queen Alexandra Stakes six times from 1929-34. Only three runners went to post in 1932 – the smallest field in the race’s history. Insurance proved victorious that day and confirmed his superiority by following up twelve months later
The post-war years saw the race’s first triple winner Hatton’s Grace, trained by the legendary Vincent O’Brien, dominated from 1949-51 He was swiftly followed by Sir Ken who recorded a hat-trick of wins for Willie Stephenson from 1952-54 and still holds the record of being the shortest-priced winnersent off a 2/5 favourite in 1953 He was ridden by Tim Molony who with four victories is the winning most rider
The late 60s saw the emergence of another superstar in the shape of Persian War who ruled the race for trainer Colin Davies, winning three times from 1968-1970. The 70s provided some well-known winners and even today few will need little introduction. Bula recorded back-to-back wins in 1971-72, Comedy Of Errors’ two wins in 1973 and 1975 were sandwiched around the victory of a certain Lanzarote, before Night Nurse 1976-77, Monksfield 1978-79 and Sea Pigeon 1980-81 all recorded doubles.
In 1984 Dawn Run, trained by Paddy Mullins, emerged on the scene and started re-writing the history books That year she became only the second mare to win the Unibet Champion Hurdle – also adding the Irish and French versions, and two years later she added the Gold Cup and remains the only horse to have completed the Champion Hurdle-Gold Cup double.
Nicky Henderson’s See You Then dominated the race from 1985-87 to become the race’s fourth three-time winner.
The most recent three-time winner came in 1998-2000 when Istabraq helped launch the career of a certain Aidan O’Brien. He was odds-on to become the first four-time winner of the race in 2001 but was cruelly denied due to the entire Festival being lost to the foot-and-mouth outbreak
In recent times, Hurricane Fly excelled in 2011 and although he missed the following year through injury, he returned in 2013 to regain his crown. He could finish only fourth in 2014 and in his final attempt at the race, he finished a gallant third behind stablemate Faugheen in 2015
Willie Mullins also saddled the winner in 2016 as Annie Power became the first mare since Flakey Dove in 1994 and just the fourth overall to win the Unibet Champion Hurdle. 2017 and 2018 saw Nicky Henderson’s Buveur d’Air cross the line first and extend his trainer’s tally of victories in the race to seven. He fell in the 2019 renewal when bidding for the hat-trick and instead, it was JP McManus’ other representative, the Gavin Cromwelltrained Espoir d’Allen, who became the first five-year-old since Katchit in 2008 to win the premier two-mile hurdle in the National Hunt calendar, and he did so in some style
Epatante made it back-to-back wins for JP McManus’ in 2020 before finishing third in 2021 and second last year. The winner on both those occasions was the superstar mare Honeysuckle. Henry de Bromhead has done a brilliant job with the Queen of Ireland but this year she is set for the Mares’ hurdle Constitution Hill and State Man look set to battle it out for who will be the next star two-mile hurdler.

CONSTITUTION HILL looked something special when routing Jonbon in the Supreme on this day last year and has fully confirmed that impression with easy wins in the Fighting Fifth and Christmas Hurdle this winter State Man is a high-class and progressive hurdler in his own right and looks a clear second best but it’s still hard to see him seriously troubling Michael Buckley’s outstanding 6-y-o. I Like To Move It looks best of the rest.

The Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse has seen a great rivalry between the home team of British-trained runners and those crossing the Irish Sea for many years.
To celebrate this rivalry, the competition between the two countries is officially titled The Craft Irish Whiskey Co Prestbury Cup This year the Prestbury Cup is sponsored by Craft Irish Whiskey Co
The Prestbury Cup runs from the first race of the four-day meeting, through until either country has 14 winners or more.
There are a total of 28 races during The Festival.
The Prestbury Cup, named after the nearest village to Cheltenham Racecourse, will be presented to jockeys and trainers from Ireland or Britain once the winning country is confirmed. The Cup itself has been sealed with some hallowed Cheltenham turf, so the winning country will be taking a little bit of Cheltenham with them
The Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle race, now in its sixteenth year, has largely been dominated by Willie Mullins, largely thanks to the brilliant race mare Quevega who won the race six times. This Grade 1 hurdle race, run over about two and a half miles, is designed specifically for fillies and mares. With no four-year-olds in today’s line-up, all of the runners are set to carry 11st 5lb.
12 of the 15 winners won last time out
12 of the 15 winners were aged 5-7
9 of the 15 winners were rated 153+

Mrs Milner kept on gamely to claim third to fill the places for Ireland

MARIE’S ROCK showed her trademark turn of foot when landing this contest 12 months ago and Nicky Henderson’s improving mare can utilise it again to telling effect to fend off former Champion Hurdle winners Honeysuckle and Epatante. Henry de Bromhead’s outstanding mare is greatly feared now stepping back up in trip though, while Echoes In Rain is another who could enter calculations in a superb renewal.

RACE DESCRIPTION
The Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle is a Premier Handicap restricted to juveniles (four-year-olds), so many of the runners in this two miles and half a furlong race will still be very inexperienced over hurdles. As with the handicap earlier in the card, the higher the rating, the bigger the weight a horse has to carry - see how McTigue rated 142, carries 7lb more than the 135-rated Tekao.
9 of the 18 winners began their careers in France
12 of the 18 winners carried 11-stone or more
10 of the 18 winners had exactly 3 runs
Gaelic Warrior had attracted a lot of market support after his win over in Auteuil had worked out well and came into the race with a big reputation. It was clear from the outset that he had a tendency to jump quite markedly out to his right, which undoubtedly played a part in him being just touched off by Brazil in the finish He shaped as a proper stayer when picking up Gaelic Warrior and galloped all the way to the line.
Run over two miles, eighty-seven yards. 8 hurdles to be jumped
Total prize fund of £80,000 £45,016 to the winner

The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
The Jockey Club South West Frequent Runner Scheme is aimed at rewarding trainers who run horses regularly at Jockey Club Racecourses in the South West Region - Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick and Wincanton.
There are two categories of a frequent runner. Trainers with 40 or more horses and Trainers with 40 or fewer horses in training.
Warwick’s two-day meeting on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 September kicks off the 2021/22 scheme, which will conclude on 31 May 2022.
All qualifying races are allocated a star rating (* to *****) with trainers awarded full points (star rating) for their first runner and half points for additional runners in the same race. These are based on the average numbers of runners a race has attracted over the previous two or three years as follows:
1 star - 18 plus runners 2 stars - 15-17 3 stars - 12-14 4 stars – 8-11 5 stars – less than 8
The star ratings for each qualifying race are marked with the race conditions.
CURRENT STANDINGS (as of 26 February 2022)
The WellChild National Hunt Steeple Chase has a rich history and, in its heyday, was second only to the Grand National when it came to the most prestigious races of the season. Nowadays, the race is restricted to novices aged five-years-old and upwards and is run over about three miles and six furlongs – the longest race over regulation obstacles during the entire Festival. All runners this afternoon carry 11st 7lb, apart from Bellatrixsa, who as a mare carries 11st.
23 of the past 32 winners were aged 7 or 8
9 of the past 12 winners returned at single figure odds
9 of the past 13 winners had run at the festival previously
Stattler proved he had the class to lower the colours of Run Wild Fred for Gordon Elliott. The two had the beating of the field turning for home and it was clear a long way out that the winner would come from this duo. Run Wild Fred had led for much of the race but couldn’t find anything to repel the persistent challenge of Stattler, who breezed past the maroon of Run Wild Fred Ronnie Bartlett’s seven-year-old was spring-heeled at the last to win by eight lengths.
Run over three miles, five furlongs & 201 yards. 21 Fences to be jumped Total prize fund of £125,000 £60,387 to the winner
