Chester Racecard - Saturday 26th June - Summer Festival

Page 1

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - SATURDAY 26 JUNE 2021

Good Afternoon, It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our Summer Festival today at Chester Racecourse. We hope you will enjoy some nice weather in the picturesque backdrop of our iconic racecourse with the very best hospitality and service Chester has to offer.

This afternoon we have seven exciting races for you. Our racing kicks off today with The Racing Welfare Supporting Racing’s Workforce Novice Stakes (Class 4, 3+yo) at 14:10pm. The standout race of today is The NationalRacehorseWeek.uk Handicap Stakes (Class 2, 3yo) with a prize of £19,000 at 15:20pm. The afternoon’s racing will then conclude with The Family Funday Tickets Now on Sale Handicap Stakes (Class 4, 4+yo) at 17:40pm. I would like to extend my thanks to all of today’s sponsors for this Saturday’s racing. Racing Welfare and Mental Health UK are two very important charities. Mental Health UK has spent years dedicated to the improvement of our nation’s mental health and extending its support to those in need; a cause never more relevant than in the past year. Racing Welfare are dear to our hearts here at Chester Racecourse. They are committed to the welfare of everyone in the horse racing and breeding industry - person and horse - and their actions are integral to this historic sport’s continued presence here and across the world. Similar to yesterday evening’s racing, today was originally planned to operate without COVID restrictions according to the government’s roadmap. I am certain that the delay to this roadmap, albeit disappointing, will not affect our ability to offer the first-class service customers of Chester Racecourse have come to expect. Our next fixture following today’s racing is the Boodles Ladies & Gents Evening on the 9th July. I hope you have booked to enjoy what promises to be an enjoyable and elegant evening.

Ian O’Doherty Chairman

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

THE RACECOURSE DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length. The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS Andrew Balding won this in 2018 and has a good chance of doing so again with SUNSET SALUTE who improved for his all-weather debut with an easy course and distance success last month. He can prove too good for Aesthete who was only beaten a neck at Salisbury and wears first-time blinkers now, and Kempton winner Bill Peyto who returns from a gelding operation and is the unknown quantity in this field.

RACE 2

WIN: SUNSET SALUTE

CAROLINE DALE looks interesting on her handicap debut after competing in Group Three and Listed class when third on her final two outings last season. She hasn’t been seen since a two length second to Zoetic at Newbury last August but has every chance if spot on for her return to action. First Company was well beaten at Royal Ascot but ought to find this easier and was second here in May, leaving Cuban Breeze to challenge for the minor placing.

RACE 3

WIN: CAROLINE DALE

RACE 4 RACE 5

EACH WAY: CAIRN ISLAND

ZOLTAN STAR has already posted form which gives him strong claims in this company, including when third over course and distance on his penultimate start, and he looks capable of taking advantage of a drop in grade having not been disgraced in the Woodcote last time. Russellinthebushes also has placed form at this course (finished just ahead of Zoltan Star) and should get in contention once again, while Cotai Hero may be able to step up from his debut and get involved. WIN: ZOLTAN STAR

RACE 6

EACH WAY: FIRST COMPANY

Cairn Island looks interesting in first-time cheekpieces after his Newmarket fourth over shorter in April, and as a son of Kodiac he may well be better suited by the seventh furlong here. Richard Fahey won this in 2019 and his Master Zoffany could also get involved on this better ground, but preference is for SIBAAQ. He can make all from his low draw under Royston Ffrench and will find this quicker ground much more to his liking. WIN: SIBAAQ

EACH WAY: RUSSELLINTHEBUSHES

GABRIAL THE ONE shaped with plenty of promise on his return at this track last time (finished neck ahead of Heart Of Soul) and looks capable of stepping up now he moves back up in trip. He is taken to get the better of the in-form Elhafei, who won comfortably over course and distance last time, and the track specialist Heart Of Soul. WIN: GABRIAL THE ONE

EACH WAY: ELHAFEI

The David Simcock-trained DESERT FRIEND posted his fourth career success when winning with something in hand at Lingfield earlier this month and looks the type to continue progressing. He shouldn’t have a problem moving back up in grade and looks the one to beat, with the recent Goodwood second Speedo Boy looking best equipped to chase him home having travelled with real fluency on his latest start. Call My Bluff bounced back last time and looks the best of the remainder. WIN: DESERT FRIEND

RACE 7

EACH WAY: AESTHETE

EACH WAY: SPEEDO BOY

SPOOF was successful on his only run at this track back in 2018 and has posted good efforts on his last two starts, most recently when second at Windsor last month, despite facing trouble in running. He can register his first win of the season, possibly at the expense of the consistent Dark Shot, who may find this sharper track more to his liking. Militia offered more last time and can’t be ruled out. WIN: SPOOF

EACH WAY: DARK SHOT

race one

The opening contest today is a novice stakes, run over a distance of seven furlongs about 127 yards. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds and upwards in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

(Penalty Value £5927.10) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

PLAY SMARTER

A wide-open sprint handicap with a host arriving with sound claims and it may pay to side with GLAMOROUS ANNA. She’s been highly tried this term, well held in the King’s Stand last week. This rates much more suitable, particularly operating from her last winning mark, and a better showing is anticipated. Gabrial The Devil and First Company are just a couple of others to consider.

In a very competitive renewal of this Group 2 the marginal preference is for DR ZEMPF, who created a big impression when making a wining debut over C&D earlier in the month. The son of Dark Angel accounted for a decent field on that occasion and he should have more to offer with that experience now under his belt. Go Bears Go and Cadamosto are closely matched and obvious threats to the selection following decent efforts in the Norfolk recently, where the draw appeared to be against them. KINROSS proved well suited by the drop back to 7f when scoring at Haydock last time and this very talented son of Kingman might be capable of defying a 3lb penalty. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95.

STYLISH PERFORMER has made a bright start to his career, landing back-to-back Wolverhampton contests and posting a career-best in defeat when finding only one firmly on the upgrade too strong back there last time. There may be more to come back on turf and a bold bid is anticipated from stall 1. Sibaaq and Master Zoffany are fancied to pose the chief threats.

PLAY SMARTER

A cracking renewal of the Plate. DUBIOUS AFFAIR made giant strides for Charlie Fellowes in 2020 and looks ready to claim her biggest prize yet given she can race off the same mark as when an unlucky Royal Ascot second. Trueshan has an official mark of 118 to overcome but Alan King’s high-class 5-y-o is still feared most with more in the locker. Just Hubert and Australis are outsiders worth a look.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won six of the last 10 renewals of this race and with five entries here, he has every chance of adding to that tally. HIGH DEFINITION has always been held in some regard at home and although he missed the Derby at Epsom after his Dante third, that sees him arrive here fresher than most. Mojo Star must be the best maiden in training after his second in the Epsom Classic, and he could be ridden nearer to the pace here now Richard Hannon knows he stays the mile and a half, making him a serious danger. Hurricane Lane will be better suited by this track than Epsom and he can also get involved in the finish for Charlie Appleby and William Buick, and he may be the biggest danger to the favourite.

For maiden two yrs old Total race value £7900 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3371, 2nd £1685, 3rd £843, 4th £421. (Penalty Value £4266)

RACE DESCRIPTION This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

HORSE WELFARE At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys. 51

THE MENTAL HEALTH UK HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)

1m 4f 63y

For three yrs old and upwards Total race value £9250 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3435, 2nd £1717, 3rd £859, 4th £429, 5th £240, 6th £240, 7th £240, 8th £240. (Penalty Value £4346.99) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile, four furlongs about 63 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty which is based on the age of the horse in this race.

ELHAFEI was well on top at the finish when completing the hat-trick over this C&D a fortnight ago, and a further 5lb rise may not be enough to prevent him from extending his winning sequence. (Penalty Value £4346.99) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a two miles handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
