A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - SATURDAY 10 JULY 2021

Good Afternoon, I am pleased to be able to welcome you to City Plate Day here at Chester Racecourse. City Plate Day is one of our most popular fixtures each year and regularly sells out quickly as racegoers look forward to a sunny Saturday on the Roodee at the world’s oldest racecourse. Today’s fixture was hoped to take place as normal, without restrictions on our crowd numbers. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been possible on this occasion. Whilst we’re disappointed by this, we look forward to the months ahead when our future fixtures can hopefully take place in the more usual manner. Today though, we enjoy a special and unique City Plate Day amongst a smaller crowd for an unforgettably intimate atmosphere. This afternoon’s exciting race card kicks off with The EBF Stallions Novice Stakes (Class 4) at 14:15. Following this, we will all get to cheer on the jockeys in our title race, The HomeServe Back on Track City Plate Stakes (Class 1) (Listed Race) with a prize of £37,000. Our final race today is The Family Funday Tickets Now on Sale Apprentice Handicap Stakes (Class 4) which will close the day’s racing at 17:40. I would like to extend my thanks to our sponsors for today, Printworks and HomeServe. Printworks are a treasured local business in Chester, serving businesses in the local area as well as those further afield. Printworks are industry leaders in digital designing and printing services. Chester Racecourse has been proud to work with Printworks for some time now and recognise it as a trailblazer for the Chester economy. HomeServe are a household name and for good reason. As the first port of call for the nation’s house repairs and emergency assistance, HomeServe not only provide a valuable service as standard, but throughout this pandemic have been indispensable to thousands of homeowners. I hope you have a wonderful day’s racing with us today here at Chester Racecourse. There is no better place to enjoy a summer Saturday afternoon than in the comfort and luxury of Chester’s premier hospitality hotspot. After today, we will next reunite on the Roodee on the 1st August for the return of our Family Funday. We hope to see some of you then.

Ian O’Doherty Chairman

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS Hard to rule anything out but TURNA again displayed an ability to handle soft ground when a good second at Windsor latest and could take some stopping receiving weight from Devious Angel who ran flat when upped to Listed company on a similar surface last time. Costa Adeje took a step forward on this track after a break and could be dangerous if handling the the most testing ground she has hitherto encountered.

RACE 2

WIN: TURNA

Proven easy ground performer EY UP IT’S MAGGIE followed up a taking win at Carlisle with a fine third-place effort from a higher mark at York last time. She’s been nudged up a further 2lb but this would appear to be within her range on ideal ground, though game recent York winner Shepherds Way won’t be an easy nut to crack despite a 4lb rise. Zim Baby is better than he showed at Windsor last time and remains feasibly-treated.

RACE 3

WIN: EY UP IT’S MAGGIE

RACE 4 RACE 5

EACH WAY: SAFE VOYAGE

A small but competitive field in which the progressive hat-trick-seeker Monbaher holds obvious claims despite a further 6lb rise for a workmanlike win at Doncaster last time, whilst the consistent Oman should remain competitive after a narrow defeat here latest. Any value, however, may lie with low milage colt STAR CALIBER over a longer trip on the basis that he’s highly thought of and his surprise odds-on reverse at Bath last time could be attributed to lightening fast ground. WIN: STAR CALIBER

EACH WAY: MONBAHER

The Marwan Koukash-owned duo Heart Of Soul and Gabrial The One finished first and second over further here last time and should remain competitive, as should C&D winner Mukhayyam after he picked up just a 2lb rise for last month’s Ripon win. Preference, however, is for the mud-loving FIREWATER from a good draw on the strength of his runner-up effort at Haydock on his last turf start before running too bad to be true on the all-weather last time. WIN: FIREWATER

RACE 6

EACH WAY: SHEPHERDS WAY

RHOSCOLYN has proved a revelation since joining David O’Meara and looked a Listedclass performer when completing a hat-trick impressively at Epsom last time. From a good draw, and with the easy surface in his favour, he can take this class-jump in his stride. Mud-loving stablemate Azano could throw up some value on a sharp track which should suit, whilst Veteran Group 2 winner Safe Voyage shaped better than the form suggested ay Haydock last time and is another to consider. . WIN: RHOSCOLYN

EACH WAY: MUKHAYYAM

An open-looking contest but proven soft ground performer SIR BENEDICT has plenty in his favour having gone close off a similar mark over C&D on his penultimate start before being unable to get competitive from a wide draw here last time. Eloquent Arthur blotted his copybook with a tame latest Doncaster effort but he’d handled soft ground when scoring nicely at Windsor previously and he remains on interest along with Cuban Breeze who was only pegged back late here latest. WIN: SIR BENEDICT

RACE 7

EACH WAY: COSTA ADEJE

EACH WAY: ELOQUENT ARTHUR

None of these are overly-persuasive on current form other than CUBAN DANCER who took a leap forward when winning a soft-ground maiden in good style at Beverley last week. Prior to that he’d caught the eye when making late progress from a poor draw in a handicap over this C&D and he could be ahead of his current mark. For all that, Sir Maxi and State Patrol are better than they’ve shown recently, particularly the former who handles soft ground. WIN: CUBAN DANCER

EACH WAY: SIR MAXI

THE RACECOURSE DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length. The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

PLAY SMARTER

A fiendishly-competitive opener which can go the way of Iain Jardine’s JUMP THE GUN, who proved better than ever to justify strong market support when bolting up at Hamilton last month. He requires a career best to take this, but given the manner of that success, is taken to defy an 8lb rise in the weights. La Trinidad, Ajyaall and Hortzadar are just a handful of potential dangers.

TIMEFORM PREDICTION: 1.JUMP THE GUN (IRE) 2.LA TRINIDAD 3.AJYAALL (FR)

At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. This may involve screens being erected around a horse to give the veterinary team privacy to administer treatment and does not necessarily mean the worst. The same applies with doctors and jockeys.

ROYAL FLEET has created an excellent impression in winning both his starts to date and, with the latest of those working out well, an opening BHA mark of 93 could easily underestimate him, especially with further improvement on the cards. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Fred Lockwood

Fred was a real character there is no doubt about that. He was very well liked and respected by everyone he came into contact with. His passion was horse racing, he was a regular at Chester and Bangor-on-Dee, whether as a punter or as an owner. Fred unfortunately never managed to own a winner at Chester, the closest he came was 2nd on a couple of occasions, most notably with Oriental Cavalier (trained by Mark Buckley) and Madame Elizabeth, (trained by Sarah Hollinshead) he even had a runner in the Chester Cup one year, “Thimaar” which was trained by Donald McCain. Today would have been Fred’s 79th birthday but sadly he passed away in March 2020. Fred would have been here today, that’s for sure, he loved Chester Races, so we thought it appropriate to name the 4pm race today in his honour, to celebrate his life.

for three yrs old Total race value £25000 Owners Prize Money. 1st £10158, 2nd £5080, 3rd £2540, 4th £1270, 5th £635. (Penalty Value £12885) RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile, six furlongs and 87 yards handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 71 to 90. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 90 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85.

(Penalty Value £4346.99) Weights raised 3lB and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile, two furlongs and 70 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
