A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN - SUNDAY 1 AUGUST 2021 Good Afternoon, I’m delighted to once again be able to welcome you all to our much-loved annual Family Funday here at Chester Racecourse. This year, Chester Racecourse have partnered with the renowned publication ParentFolk, to bring together a jam-packed day of fun and activities for you and your families, as well as our usual thrilling horse racing for you to enjoy. In this race card you’ll find information on all of the free activities we’ve got on offer for you today, as well as the usual information on our races, betting and other events. Sadly, we were unable to hold a Family Funday last year due to the pandemic the first year we’ve not held our Family Funday since its debut in 1995. This year, we’ve pulled out all the stops for its return to the Roodee and themed the day around retro fun. All of our activities and offerings are set to transport you back to the roaring 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Think roller skates, neon colours and groovy disco sounds. I’d like to extend my thanks to ParentFolk for their involvement in the planning of this special day. I’m sure we’ll all agree that finally being able to spend time with our loved ones, make some memories and catch up on lost time, will make today’s event all the more special. ParentFolk are a family-focused brand, and this ethos truly shines through in their presence here today. With activities for all ages and members of the family, you’ll be spoilt for choice on what to try first. My thanks also to our other partners for today; Chester FC, Chester Marathon, Storyhouse and Children’s Air Ambulance. All have activities on the open course today for you to come and get involved in. Today’s races will begin with The Printworks Nursery Handicap Stakes (Class 4, 2yo) at 14:10pm. Later in the day at 15:10pm, we have our exciting listed race with The Children’s Air Ambulance Queensferry Stakes (Class 1, 3+yo) and a grand prize of £50,000 for the winner. Finally, at 17:15 The Mental Health UK Handicap Stakes (Class 4, 3+yo) will bring a close to the day’s fun and excitement. Thank you again for choosing to attend today’s Family Funday at Chester Racecourse. This is always a special event and one that during this time holds more meaning than usual for all of us as we look forward to brighter times ahead.

ON COURSE BETTING & HOW TO READ THE RACECARD WAYS TO BET WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post. Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake) EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake. STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting. • • • • • •

Fewer than 4 runners - all on to win 5 – 7 runnewrs (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3 Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4 Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4

Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval. In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure. The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings. Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY. PLACING A BET Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow: 1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection. 2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake. 3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly. 4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe. 5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed. Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Remembering Chester Race Company President

Bobby McAlpine 6 May 1932 – 25 June 2021

Bobby McAlpine was an affable chairman who remained at the heart of Chester Race Company for 30 years. McAlpine’s history at Chester began with him taking a position on the board in 1984 and serving as chairman from 1988 to 2008. Bobby was a much-loved and much-respected member of the Chester Race Company board, with him serving as Honorary President until the time of his passing. He was instrumental in bringing Chester Race Company to where it is today, with the foresight to appoint a permanent Chief Executive to oversee the expansion and day-to-day running of the operation. It was just after that he assisted with the decision to purchase Bangor-on-Dee racecourse, thus bringing flat and jump racing together in the area. A long-standing member of the Jockey Club, he also served as director of Aintree Racecourse, and stewarded at Wolverhampton, Bangor-On-Dee, Chester, Haydock, Aintree and Newmarket. His interest in racing had been fired as a boy when his uncle told him about winning the Grand National in 1921 with his horse Shaun Spadah. He was still in his twenties when he agreed to buy a four-year-old gelding from Ireland called Marnrack, which was enough to get him hooked. Racing success followed for McAlpine, with notable wins in the King George V Stakes in 1969 and the Ascot Gold Cup in 1970, beating the Derby winner Blakeney. A reputable breeder, he bred winners in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, Benson & Hedges Cup at York and, most notably, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham in 1986 with odds of 40-1. Bobby was one of the great characters in the racing community and he will be sorely missed. The thoughts of all at Chester Race Company are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

THE RACECOURSE DESCRIPTION

A left-handed circular flat course, turning for most of the way, and finishing in a short straight which is less than two furlongs in length. The course suits the handy type of horse and a fast start is quite important in sprints. At just over a mile around this is the smallest course in Great Britain.

RACE 1

TODAY’S TOP TIPS ROMAN DRAGON arrives here seeking the hat-trick after a brace of wins over this course and distance. The son of Heeraat is usually ridden under prominent tactics and can dominate this field. His stablemate Devious Angel looks to be the main threat on his nursery debut and lurks on a workable mark. Mytilda is also respected after his success at Musselburgh, but might find this to be stiffer task shouldering a 6lb penalty. Emporium Flame also warrants respect and could have more improvement to offer at this level.

RACE 2

WIN: ROMAN DRAGON

Prosperous Voyage created a good impression when scoring at Epsom but has a penalty and wide draw to overcome. Atrium is also another to consider after his success at Ascot last month but has the same issues to contend with here. Therefore, a chance is taken on NUANCE, who has already posted some encouraging displays at Haydock and might be suited by this sharper test from an ideal draw. Costa Adeje is another to consider.

RACE 3

WIN: NUANCE

RACE 4 RACE 5

DANGER: DAKOTA GOLD

HEART OF SOUL is a standout in his bid to repeat last year’s victory in this contest. The booking of Hollie Doyle certainly catches the eye and he has been in terrific form of late, going down narrowly over a trip short of his best earlier in the month. He is taken to get the better off Love Is Golden, who hasn’t cut much ice since winning over C&D at the May meeting, and fellow course winner Rival for the in-form Andrew Balding team. WIN: HEART OF SOUL

DANGER: LOVE IS GOLDEN

The fact that MOT AND THE MESSER was thought good enough to contest the Group 2 Superlative Stakes says a lot about the regard in which he is held at Manor House. Prior to finishing seventh there, he had routed his rivals at Ripon in the style of a very talented juvenile and it may pay to keep the faith with him here. Last-time-out winners Global Wisdom and Maglev are also worthy of the utmost respect, but they may need to go some to catch the selection from stall one. WIN: MOT AND THE MESSER

RACE 6

DANGER: COSTA ADEJE

Defending champion Judicial warrants huge respect for Julie Camacho and is likely to make his presence felt again here. However, a chance is taken on MIGHTY GURKHA, who looks well treated with the three-year-old allowance. The son of Sepoy still remains a maiden on the turf but should be suited by the nature of the track if he gets an aggressive ride. Dakota Gold could the danger to the selection after his recent comeback at York. WIN: MIGHTY GURKHA

DANGER: MAGLEV

In an open event preference is for JUMAIRA BAY, who failed to fire in the Bunbury Cup last time but he accounted for a useful rival when scoring at Chelmsford two starts ago. That form suggests that the four-year-old could be hard to beat now eased in grade. Gabrial The Devil and Lincoln Park both have to be noted having won on their most recent outings, while Baby Steps is another to consider. WIN: JUMAIRA BAY

RACE 7

DANGER: DEVIOUS ANGEL

DANGER: LINCOLN PARK

FAIRMAC had been running well in defeat prior to winning over 1m2f at Ayr last time and a 4lb rise for that success may not be enough to stop him from taking this contest as well. Gabrials Boy made an encouraging return to action at Haydock recently and it would be no surprise to see him go well today, while Hector’s Here is the pick of the remainder. WIN: FAIRMAC

DANGER: GABRIALS BOY

PLAY SMARTER

Following a highly impressive winning chasing debut at Uttoxeter, TARDREE may have found the race coming too soon when only third in a stronger race at Southwell 5 days later, so he’s worth another chance to build on that having been allowed more of a break now. High Noon goes well at this track and should give the selection plenty to think about.

RACE DESCRIPTION Our opener this afternoon is a nursery - a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlong race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 85.

PLAY SMARTER

Cases can be made for all five but ROMAN DRAGON has looked right at home dominating small fields here of late and with the drop to 5f likely to suit he could get the hat-trick up on his first go in a nursery. Mytilda was a big improver when winning at Musselburgh last week and has an obvious chance under a penalty if backing that effort up.

STARS IN THE NIGHT looked to be a progressive filly in the spring. She was then thrown in at the deep end last time in an Ayr listed race, so she should find this easier and makes plenty of appeal off this mark with a promising apprentice taking 7lb off. John Kirkup has to be respected after his Ayr win. Queen of Kalahari could come on for her reappearance and may play a part in the finish.

HORSE WELFARE At all of our race meetings, there are three equine vets on duty. They are equipped and positioned to give immediate care to a horse should it require it. Hospitality Areas, Chester Members, Winning Post, County Long Room and County Concourse Gentlemen are required to wear a well-tailored suit or a blazer/sports jacket with smart trousers, together with a shirt, collar and tie. For gentlemen a collar is required, either polo shirt or collared shirt. Smart (not ripped) jeans, trouser or chinos are permitted. We encourage smart dress code in all enclosures, so feel free to dress up and enjoy the occasion. Please note that shorts, sportswear, t-shirts and fancy dress are not permitted in this enclosure. Dee Stand There is no strict dress code in this enclosure. It is however advisable to dress for the elements. It’s very hard to ignore the claims of DAKOTA GOLD who escapes a penalty for his wins at listed/Group 3 level last term and should take a good deal of pegging back from the rail draw. PLAY SMARTER

SAFRAN won on the all-weather at Deauville back in January but struggled in two runs since joining David O’Meara before returning to form at York last month. The yard is very adept at getting the most out of new recruits and he could continue to progress now he’s rediscovered his form. Admirality looks well handicapped on his best form and should go close. Coase can’t be ruled out either.

Cases can be made for many, but it could be worth siding with BOLT N BROWN, who ran creditably despite producing a typically lazy display when runner-up at Uttoxeter last week and can go a place better back up in trip here with the visor reapplied. RACE DESCRIPTION This is a one mile and four furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

RACE DESCRIPTION This is a seven furlong, 127-yard handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90.

for three yrs old and upwards Total race value £9250 Owners Prize Money. 1st £3435, 2nd £1717, 3rd £859, 4th £429, 5th £240, 6th £240, 7th £240, 8th £240. (Penalty Value £4346.99) Weights raised 1lbs and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. RACE DESCRIPTION Our closing contest this afternoon is a one mile and two furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
