The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

CURRAGH COMMENT ULTRAMARINE finished a close-up fourth at Fairyhouse on debut a fortnight ago and normal improvement will see him go close in the opener. He’s entitled to have come forward plenty for that initial experience and he’s in the right hands. Any money for Aidan O’Brien’s newcomer The Lute Player would have to be taken seriously, while Glengarra should be wiser for his Listowel outing and the sole filly in the race, Memory Mote,l represents a yard which has already sent out three winning juveniles at this track this year.

CURRAGH COMMENT There are plenty of well-bred newcomers in this field with the most notable being Minding’s full-sister Tuesday and Hymn Book Too, who is closely related to Dawn Approach. That said, preference is for DISCOVERIES, who is also from an outstanding family being a full-sister to Alpha Centauri as well as a half-sister to Alpine Star. The daughter of Mastercraftsman put in a very promising display when finishing fourth on her debut at Leopardstown three weeks ago and she should only benefit from that experience. Others to note are Smile Of Love, Pantelleria and Alaroos.

DANGER: TUESDAY RACE TWO

CURRAGH COMMENT HIGHTIMEYOUWON returned to winning ways at Cork on his most recent start last month and Dermot Weld’s gelding is capable of taking another step forward with a 3lb rise appearing to be very fair. Mudawy hasn’t got his head in front so far in his career but his consistency is likely to see him play a major role in proceedings, while Acquiescent bounced back to form when runner-up at Gowran Park earlier in the month and she can enter the reckoning once again.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. STARS OF THE FUTURE

ANNALISE CULLEN

A first season apprentice, Annalise has made a great start to her career in the saddle. She has struck up associations with Dennis Coakley, Anthony McCann, Ross O’Sullivan and Michael Grassick. She has rode Loingseoir, trained by Michael Grassick, to victory the last twice at Fairyhouse and Roscommon. Her first victory came on Zephron, trained by her father Dennis, at the Curragh over six furlongs back in May.

Now in her second season riding under rules, Nikita will be best known as apprentice to Johnny Murtagh. She struck up a good association with the yard’s Lord Rapscallion last year, guiding the horse home to victory at Bellewstown, Gowran and just being denied in a valuable handicap at Leopardstown.

NIKITA KANE

SAM EWING Son of leading point-to-point trainer Warren, Sam made his mark on the pony circuit and has since rode down from a 10lb claimer to now a 5lb claimer. He has rode a series of familiar names to victory, with the likes of Saltonstall and Ardhoomey some notable victories.

34

DANNY SHEEHY

Danny is an incredibly experienced apprentice, with well over 1000 rides to his name. He’s won on some big days too, notably when guiding home the Eddie Lynam-trained Soffia to victory in the 2018 renewal of the Bold Lad handicap on Irish Champions Weekend. Danny has been an apprentice since 2016 and has rode consistently, notching up 17 winners in 2020. He rides mainly as apprentice for Johnny Mutragh, but has picked up rides for other yards too.

A rider to follow, McMonagle has already notched an impressive strike rate from only three seasons in the saddle. Riding primarily for Joseph O’Brien, McMonagle has already tasted big race success, guiding home Baron Samedi to win the Vintage Crop Stakes and Mighty Blue to victory in the Vintage Tipple Stakes.

DYLAN BROWNE MCMONAGLE

ANDREW SLATTERY Now in his fifth season as an apprentice, Andrew rides a lot for both his father, also Andrew, and Dermot Weld, with whom he has a good association. He has formed a good partnership with Kastasa in place of the sidelined Oisin Orr, and he rode the mare to victory in the Petingo Handica and the Loughbrown Stakes.

THE BORD NA MONA RECYCLING APPRENTICE DERBY The Bord Na Mona Recycling Apprentice Derby is one of 5 races that are part of the Bord Na Mona Recycling Future Stars Series which sees its finale in October. Bord Na Mona Recycling are based near the Curragh Racecourse in Newbridge in the Bord na Mona HQ which is on the site of what was one of the biggest cavalry barracks in Europe in the 1800’s. Many past winners of the prestigious Apprentice Derby have gone onto Group 1 glory and the race has proven to be a stepping stone to greater international success with the likes of former champion apprentice Gavin Ryan who won the race twice in the past and is also a Group 3 winner, Dylan Brown McMonagle who has come up through the ranks as a former pony racing champion jockey, Royal Ascot winning rider Ben Curtis, national hunt Galway Plate winner Mark Enright and then onto other graduate jockeys from the race who have gone onto win the Group 1 races like Ronan Whelan, Shane Foley, Padraig Beggy. A hotly contested event, we’ve seen some promising riders land this event in recent years. Gavin Ryan made it back-to-back wins in the race when coming home in front last year aboard the Jim Bolgertrained Trossachs, repeating the feat of a year earlier when winning the race aboard Dawn Hoofer. Had it not been for Danny Sheehy’s win in 2017 with Zeftan for Adrian Keatley, Gavin Ryan would’ve landed this race for three consecutive years as he finished a gallant second that day. Joseph O’Brien supplied his sister Ana with victory Gavin Ryan and Trossachs in the 2016 renewal with Arya Tara, with the winning owner none other than their mother in what was a true family affair. The Murtagh family paved the way for familial success in this race,as Johnny saddled Jocular to win under his daughter Caroline in 2015. Ronan Whelan gave News At Six a sublime ride to win the 2014 running for Jim Bolger, with then two pound claimer Marc Monaghan guiding Mourani to success in 2013 for John Oxx. The further back in time you travel the more stories you find. Cathy Gannon landed the race back in 2003, with Fran Berry, Jamie Spencer and Seamie Heffernan winning the 1999, 1997 and 1995 renewals respectively.

RACE FOUR

A competitive race on paper but there is every chance that MOUNTAIN FOX can follow up his recent win despite the handicapper’s attentions. If he fails to shrug off the extra weight then Beyond Happy looks an interesting alternative for Jim Bolger, who has won this race in two of the last three years, while Tudor City is beginning to look well handicapped and could go close at a price but only if he handles the quicker ground.

CURRAGH COMMENT Interpretation made an encouraging debut when fourth over 1m1f here last November and he warrants respect equipped with cheekpieces and stepped up in trip on his return, while Alpine Sierra and Safecracker are other experienced players to note. However, a chance is taken on Jessica Harrington’s newcomer, ANTHEM. CURRAGH COMMENT BRIGHT IDEA has been lightly raced throughout his career and failed to justify favouritism over track and trip last time out. That was in testing conditions, though, and the return to a sounder surface could lead him back to winning ways. Lord Park was third when the aforementioned son of Zoffany won at Killarney last month and merits serious consideration with a 6lb swing in his favour. Completing the shortlist of dangers is the Henry De Bromhead-trained Cape Islay, who landed the spoils in some style at Limerick 13 days ago and is worth noting off 7lb higher.

CURRAGH COMMENT A fiercely competitive finale, in which narrow preference is for recent winner FEARLESS GIRL. Her and Dylan Brown McMonagle just got the better of the reopposing Magnetic North in a driving finish at Ballinrobe on Monday and, with confidence high, she should remain competitive under a 6lb penalty. The latter has to be respected, for all he’s a fairly in-and-out performer, while Kojin and Devious Dreamer are other in-form players to note. Big Island, Bears Hug, Himalayan Beauty and Stop On Red add further spice to the race.

DANGER: MAGNETIC NORTH

WIN: FEARLESS GIRL
