Willie McCreery
2010 was the year Willie McCreery began training at Rathbride Stables. Coming from a background steeped in racing, his late-father Peter was a successful trainer and now Willie is proving himself to be a very capable and successful trainer of flat horses. Willie worked for many years with trainer Charles O’Brien before taking out his own licence. Never far from the winners’ enclosure, McCreery gained his first Group 1 success when Fiesolana won the Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on September 13, 2014. Willie was also a very talented GAA player, having played at the highest level for his native Kildare and was an integral part of the team when Kildare won their first senior Leinster title in 42 years in 1998. 6

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 7

CURRAGH COMMENT The progressive Shinkansen sets the standard having finished second over 5f at Navan last month but the step up in trip has to be a slight concern. With that in mind, preference is for LUXEMBOURG, who lacks race experience but he is a half-brother to the Group 2 winner Leo De Fury. The son of Camelot cost 150,000gns as a yearling and he is also closely related to Sense Of Style, who was placed in a Group 3 earlier in the year. Others to consider are Atomic Jones, Lucky San Jore and Shark Bay.

THE AIRLIE STUD STAKES This race was inaugurated in 2005 as a Listed race over seven furlongs. After two runnings its distance was shortened to six furlongs and in 2011 it attained Group 3 status. This was the 5th running as a Group 2 race following a vintage renewal in 2019 when the subsequent Group 1 winner Albigna landed the race. Since 2005, Aidan O’Brien has won this six times, making him the leading trainer in the race. It comes as no surprise therefore to see Ryan Moore the leading jockey, with the rider responsible for four wins, consecutively fom 2015-2018, with the win of Most Beautiful coming for David Wachman. The inaugural renewal was won by the Jessica Harrington-trained Sahara Princess, who was victorious under Johnny Murtagh. The Bolger-Manning combination got onto the scoresheet a year later with Gaudeamus, while the first Aidan O’Brien-trained winner came in 2007 with Listen, who subsequently won the Fillies Mile at Newmarket under Kieren Fallon. Kevin Prendergast sent out the winner in 2008 and 2010 with Shimah and Seeharn respectively, both ridden by Declan McDonogh, with Long Lashes making it two winners of the race for Jessica Harrington in 2009 under Fran Berry. Wayne Lordan guided home Experience to become David Wachman’s first winner in 2011, with Colm O’Donoghue partnering Sendmylovetorosie to success for Andrew Oliver a year later. Joseph O’Brien partnered his father’s Bye Bye Birdie to victory in 2013, with Seamie Heffernan riding I Am Beautiful (pictured) to success in 2014. Most Beautiful regained the winning thread for Wachman a year ater, while Roly Poly, Clemmie and So Perfect sustained a period of Ballydoyle dominance from 2016 to 2018.
18
In 2019 Jessica Harrington sent out the talented Albigna to victory, providing Shane Foley with a first winner of the race, and she proved to be a classy filly when landing the spoils in the Prix Marcel Boussac over in France on her penultimate juvenile season. The 2020 renewal saw an upset, with the Fozzy Stack-trained Aloha Star running out a 33/1 winner under Chris Hayes. A well-bred filly by Starspangledbanner, she had beaten Logo Hunter, now a talented up and coming sprinter who has won two Listed races, in a maiden at Bellestown the time before but came into the Airlie Stud Stakes relatively unfancied. Chris Hayes kept his mount fairly positive in the four runner field, settled behind favourite Frenetic. Further back came Mother Earth, now a Classic winner, with the Ken Condon-trained Inner Beauty further back under Billy Lee. Aloha Star made her challenge in the final furlong, with Hayes poised on the button to deliver her burst of speed at the perfect stage. Hayes timed his challenge perfectly and had a winning partner, with Aloha Star getting up on the line to win by a head. See how the race panned out below.

CURRAGH COMMENT CHEERUPSLEEPYJEAN outran odds of 50/1 to finish third in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot 11 days ago and that form suggests that she will be hard to beat this afternoon. The way she stayed on that day indicates that this step up in trip should suit and she clearly sets the standard. Yet was well held in the same race at Ascot but it would be no surprise to see her bounce back on just her third career start. Velocidad made a winning debut at Fairyhouse and she is another who looks to have a bright future.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT INDEPENDENT MISSY proved her 6f Navan success in April was no fluke when posting a cracking effort in defeat at Fairyhouse last time. That form reads well in the context of this handicap and the five-year-old is only 1lb higher. Brave Display bolted up at Down Royal over 7f recently and won’t mind coming back to 6f given he is a C&D winner, while chances are also given to the unexposed Rough Diamond, who won here on debut and might still have more to offer, and the improving Bellagio Man.
WIN: INDEPENDENT MISSY

RACE FOUR
CURRAGH COMMENT ZARZYNI has shown plenty on both starts since joining David Barron, ultimately a touch unlucky when narrowly beaten at Musselburgh last time having met traffic at a crucial stage. He still has the potential to step up for this yard and is taken to notch up his second career win at a track where he has gone well in the past. Pulse Of Shanghai has progressed since joining this yard and shaped better than the bare result when seventh at Leopardstown last time, having been forced to work hard to get across from a wide draw. He will have no problem dropping in trip and looks set for a bold showing, while Mrs Bouquet should benefit from the drop in trip and can get involved.
MAGICAL
One of the classiest fillies to grace the Irish turf in a while, Magical built up a reputati expertly by Aidan O’Brien, she raced 28 times, winning 12 and placing a further 10 t
40
ion as one of the toughest, most consistent and classiest fillies in training. Trained times. She amassed almost £5,000,000 in prize money and was a true star.
41
42
Magical made her racecourse debut at the Curragh, where she was narrowly beaten over six furlongs. Her pedigree, by Galileo and as a full sister to Rhododendron and Flying The Flag, suggested she would be better over further and this proved to be the case. She landed the Debutante Stakes as a juvenile and won the Kilboy Estate Stakes on her second three-year-old run. She later followed up in the Fillies and Mares Stakes at Ascot on British Champions Day and rounded out her three-year-old season with a close second to Enable at the Breeders’ Cup. Her four and five-year-old seasons proved fruitful, as she won the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup twice, the Irish Champion Stakes twice and was placed internationally at Sha Tin, Keeneland, York and Sandown.
43
THE ALWASMIYAH PRETTY POLLY STAKES This race is named after the peerless Irish-bred Pretty Polly (1901-1931) who won 22 of her 24 career starts. At one point in her career she won 15 races in succession and in 1904 she became only the fifth filly to win the British Fillies Triple Crown which came into being in 1814. Her legacy as a broodmare was also substantial to say the least and was felt long after she passed away in 1931. The Pretty Polly Stakes was first run in 1947 and was restricted to three-year-olds until 1985. From 1971 until 2003 it held Group 2 status and thereafter it has been as a Group 1. 20 runnings of the race have been won by English-trained fillies. The 1951 winner Ash Plant and Jinkitis in 1978 have the distinction of being the longest priced winners in the history of the race at 25/1. The 2016 winner Minding is the shortest priced winner in the race’s history having gone off at 1/5 to account for her four rivals. 1996 and 1997 yielded wins for the Dermot Weld-trained Dance Design, a talented daughter of Sadler’s Wells who won the Irish Oaks in 1996. Ridden by Mick Kinane, she became the most recent back to back winner until Alexander Goldrun landed the 2005 and 2006 renewals under Kevin Manning for Jim Bolger. The late 2000’s saw a series of mares win who would go on to be top broodmares, with Peeping Fawn (dam of September), Dar Re Mi (dam of Too Darn Hot), Misty For Me (dam of Roly Poly) and Izzi Top (dam of horses sold for big prices) all successful during this era. 2016 saw another superstar win, with Minding making amends for her Irish 1,000 Guineas defeat with a win upped in trip for the first time.
44
The Roger Varian-trained Nezwaah enhanced the record of British-trained fillies when winning in 2017, and the victory of Urban Fox, trained by William Haggas, a year later made it back to back wins for the raiders. Subsequent Breeders’ Cup hero Iridessa was victorious under Wayne Lordan in 2019 for Joseph O’Brien, while Magical was dominant in victory when winning this race for the first time last year. In an unusual revision to the racing calendar, Magical came to the Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly Stakes having her first run of the season. She would go on to follow up in the Tattersalls Gold Cup, a race which is usually ran prior to this one, but there was no doubting her success in winning both. Her class was evident before the race, but the manner of her victory on seasonal debut was impressive nonetheless. She made all under Seamie Heffernan to win cosily by four and a half lengths over Cayenne Pepper back in second and stablemate Fleeting further back in third. AL WASMIYAH STUD "WE HAVE DEVELOPED A BASE FOR CHAMPIONS OVERSEAS SINCE 2015. WE ASPIRE TO RACE OUR HORSES ON A LARGER SCALE IN EUROPE"
46
Alwasmiyah Stud Brothers Ali and Mohamed Bin Hamad Al Attiyah officially founded their Alwasmiyah Stud racing and broodmare operation in 2015. It was their vision to develop a racing and broodmare band to compete at the highest level. In just a few years Alwasmiyah Stud has already achieved great success on the racecourse and in the sales ring. Noor Al Hawa won the Qatar Derby in 2016, the Group 3 Grand Prix De Vichy in 2018 and the Group 1 HH Amir Trophy in Qatar in 2021. Traisha, trained in Ireland by Joseph O’Brien, won the Listed Beckford Stakes in October 2020, other winners that year in Europe included Kadupul and Dhabyah. In the sales ring Alwasmiyah have also enjoyed success, America Nova bred a Siyouni Colt that in 2019 was sold to the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum at Tattersalls October Book 1. Catch The Sea bred a Dark Angel colt at that made was sold at Tattersalls October Book 1 in 2018. They also own the dams of exciting threeyear-olds Miss Amulet and Umm Kulthum. Alwasmiyah looks forward to being a part of the Pretty Polly race day for years to come and thanks everyone at the Curragh for putting on this great day of racing.

CURRAGH COMMENT SANTA BARBARA was the talk of the town after her debut win at this venue last September, but she somewhat failed to live up to her billing in the 1,000 Guineas and Cazoo Oaks. She was by no means disgraced in those Classics, finishing fourth and fifth respectively, and gets the vote to repeat the feat of her half-sister, Iridessa, who won this in 2019. Oodnadatta hasn’t been seen in 233 days, but showed significant promise as a juvenile. The Australia filly could be the surprise package of the race, while Cayenne Pepper is expected to mount a bold bid returning to suitable conditions.

THE CURRAGH With changes to the Melbourne Cup on the horizon, we remember some of those horses who have made their mark in the Curragh Cup en route to a big day in the Melbourne Cup.
VINTAGE CROP Winner of the Curragh Cup in 1993 and 1995, Vintage Crop tasted success in the Melbourne Cup in 1993, giving Dermot Weld the first of two Melbourne Cup wins. A true stayer, Vintage Crop won the Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket before winning this race the following season, in which he followed up in the Irish St Leger and then the Melbourne Cup, where he was ridden by Mick Kinane. He was beaten at a short price in the 1994 Curragh Cup but returned to winning ways in 1995 .
RED CADEAUX An admirably progressive and consistent type, Red Cadeaux landed the 2011 Curragh Cup on his first Group class run. He followed it up with a close third in the Irish St Leger that year before only beaten a nose in the Melbourne Cup. He finished eight in the 2012 renewal of the Melbourne Cup and was second in both 2013 and 2014.
54
TO MELBOURNE REKINDLING Winner of the 2017 Curragh Cup, Rekindling had been a consistent middle distance three-year-old who took the step up in trip firmly in his stride. He saw off Wicklow Brave to win the race as a three-year-old under Wayne Lordan before just beaten into fourth in the English St Leger. He became the youngest horse in 75 years to win the Melbourne Cup when he landed the race later in his three-year-old season under Corey Brown.
TWILIGHT PAYMENT The model of consistency, Twilight Payment has given different sets of connections victory in this race, which he has won for the past two years. In his younger days he was just touched off by Order Of St George in the 2016 St Leger Trial, before finishing third in this race back in 2018. He won the 2019 renewal on his final start for Jim Bolger, where he saw off Irish Derby winner Latrobe, and had the perfect preparation for winning the 2020 Melbourne Cup when winning this race and placing third in the Irish St Leger before landing the big one at Melbourne.
55
THE COMER GROUP INTERNATIONAL CURRAGH CUP This race was established in 1987 and reached Group 3 status in 1994 before being promoted to Group 2 status in 2016 as part of the expansion and enhancement of the programme for staying horses in Europe. Its roll of honour includes a host of horses who have gone to achieve notable success both at home and abroad. Vintage Crop (1993), Rekindling (2017) and Twilight Payment (2020) won the race in the same season that they went on to win the Melbourne Cup. The 1987 winner Almaarad went on to win the Cox Plate while Kastoria (2006), Septimus (2008) and Flag Of Honour (2018) all took this race en route to Irish St Leger glory. Twilight Payment who won the race in 2020 was the third Melbourne Cup victor to win the race following the success of Vintage Crop who won the Curragh Cup in 1993 and 1995 and Rekindling who won in 2017. Four horses have won this race twice. Vintage Crop (1993 & 1995), Mkuzi (2004 & 2005), Ernest Hemingway (2013 & 2014) and Twilight Payment (2019 & 2020) all successful in the staying contest, while the talented Daliapour won the 2002 renewal in the twilight of his career. Aidan O’Brien trained four consecutive winners from 2013 to 2016, with Ernest Hemingway responsible for the first two of those, followed by Bondi Beach and Sword Fighter. Joseph O’Brien trained his first winner with Rekindling in 2017, while Twilight Payment is a regular in this race and has won the race the last twice. The first victory in 2019 came when trained by Jim Bolger, but moved to Joseph O’Brien and purchased by Lloyd Williams he continued the winning thread to win the race last year aged seven.
56
Twilight Payment had a fruitful start to 2020, finishing second at Leopardstown before winning the Vintage Crop Stakes. He backed that up with a dominating eight length win in this race (ran in June due to a change in schedule), where he was ridden for the first time by Declan McDonogh. He faced six rivals, including stablemate Master Of Reality, up and coming stayr Camphor, a last time out winner in Memorabilis and two horses trained by Luke Comer, Giuseppe Garibaldi and Cypress Creek. Memorablis made the early running from his low draw in stall two and held the lead until three furlongs from home, where the pack started to close. Twilight Payment made his challenge first under McDonogh, who was keen to use his mounts staying prowess. Master Of Reality tried to close under Shane Crosse but it was quickly evident he was no match for the winner on the day, as Twilight Payment continued to draw further and further away to record a smooth win by eight lengths. Capping a 1-2 for Lloyd Williams and Joseph O’Brien, Camphor was next best a further seven lengths behind, with early pace setter Memorabilis back in fourth. See how the race panned out with the replay below.

CURRAGH COMMENT PASSION wasn’t far short of the best three-year-old fillies around last year and it is interesting that Coolmore have kept her in training, presumably with the intention of bettering the Group 3 win that is currently on her CV. This looks an ideal opportunity to do just that, although Pondus won’t make it easy for her after his back-to-form second in a C&D handicap. Amhran Na Bhfiann will find this easier than the Ascot Gold Cup, and Sunchart isn’t out of it either.

CURRAGH COMMENT NOTRE BELLE BETE and Emporio both have their sights lowered significantly after fruitless trips to Royal Ascot, but the former has finished fourth twice in Listed company so shades the vote. Irish 2,000 Guineas fifth Emporio will test his mettle fully, though, and Gowran runner-up Punakha won’t be far away if continuing her progression. Offiah shouldn’t remain a maiden for too much longer, nor should Skilled Warrior and Disco Boots. Shabaya is an interesting newcomer.
