Welcome A special hello to Owners and Spectators who we are delighted to be welcoming back to Down Royal Racecourse on this the first step on the road back to whatever ‘normal’ will become. Things are a little different but we are hopeful you will have a great day and we are grateful to you for supporting our return by being here today! We successfully delivered race meetings behind closed doors since July 2020 but thankfully our focus can once again shift to delivering the Down Royal experience that racegoers, owners and Industry previously enjoyed. We have worked and continue to work with our industry colleagues, sporting authorities and government to ensure compliance with all necessary requirements to keep you and those around you safe until such times that we can return to relative normalcy. None of us could have anticipated that we would have to wait 16 months until we emerge and remobilise with spectators and owners at Down Royal; but we truly are delighted to see you again and ask that everybody work together along with our dedicated staff and stewards to ensure a safe and thoroughly enjoyable event for all. The versatile Western Victory was third in the Mayo National last time, but perhaps more importantly, second in a Listed contest over hurdles on her penultimate start. That brings her right into calculations here, but preference is for MAKE MY HEART FLY, who was a runner-up over fences when last seen and the four-time hurdles winner is interesting dropped back in distance for this return to timber. Ava Rose is also noted dropping back in trip, while Bonarc is likely to be thereabouts.

Times Race Start

Normally start in winter months at 1.00 – 1.30pm and during the summer months 2.30pm. Evening meetings start at 5.30pm – 6.00pm. There is normally a half hour interval between races and between six and seven races on the card. See press for details.

This is seemingly a good opportunity for WHISPERING PINES to build on an encouraging debut in testing conditions at Wexford last month. Joseph O’Brien’s filly kept on well to finish third behind the well-regarded Ashroe Diamond but she doesn’t appear to be meeting anything remotely of the same calibre here and she should have too much for the likes of Mareintheair and Littel Flour who each revealed flashes of promise on their debuts at Ballinrobe and Punchestown respectively.

Horse Welfare – A Priority At every race meeting there are minimum of two specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
