Welcome A special hello to Owners and Spectators who we are delighted to be welcoming back to Down Royal Racecourse on this the first step on the road back to whatever ‘normal’ will become. Things are a little different but we are hopeful you will have a great day and we are grateful to you for supporting our return by being here today! We successfully delivered race meetings behind closed doors since July 2020 but thankfully our focus can once again shift to delivering the Down Royal experience that racegoers, owners and Industry previously enjoyed. We have worked and continue to work with our industry colleagues, sporting authorities and government to ensure compliance with all necessary requirements to keep you and those around you safe until such times that we can return to relative normalcy. None of us could have anticipated that we would have to wait 16 months until we emerge and remobilise with spectators and owners at Down Royal; but we truly are delighted to see you again and ask that everybody work together along with our dedicated staff and stewards to ensure a safe and thoroughly enjoyable event for all. THAT’S MAD was well backed last time but had a terrible passage and could easily make amends here given the run of the race for trainer Leanne Breen and jockey Kevin Manning. Tide Of Time won this in 2019 and seems go well for a stable who have won the last four renewals and will know exacrlty what is needed, while Arnhem seems to be improving based on his recent third despite stumbling at the start, and can also get involved in the ﬁnish.

Turnstiles open approximately 2 hours before the first race.

Times Race Start

Normally start in winter months at 1.00 – 1.30pm and during the summer months 2.30pm. Evening meetings start at 5.30pm – 6.00pm. There is normally a half hour interval between races and between six and seven races on the card. See press for details.

Tote Betting

Tote betting is available in all the hospitality areas of the racecourse. We offer fixed machines and handheld operators who can come to your table, explain how to use the Tote and take your bet without you having to leave your seat.

Apprentice rider Nikita Kane can claim her full 7lb allowance this time, which lessens the four-year-old’s burden, and he could get the better of It’s All A Joke, who was only beaten a head at Fairyhouse last time and looks the most likely danger. Plough Boy has won here in the past (July 2015) and shaped with encouragement recently, with Faraah also respected.

Horse Welfare – A Priority At every race meeting there are minimum of two specially qualiﬁed equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
