EPSOM DOWNS RACECOURSE WELCOMES YOU

It is a pleasure to welcome you to Epsom Downs this evening for an exciting six-race card of racing. Just under four weeks ago we watched Adayar win the Cazoo Derby here and tonight we have another Derby for you to enjoy, the Ladies’ Derby Handicap. This fantastic race for female amateur riders has been staged here at Epsom Downs since 2009 and is run over The Derby distance of one mile and four furlongs. The most prolific winners of the race are Tapis Libre and his jockey Joanna Mason, who won the race four times together. Our third race this evening is the British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes, a race for horses who are yet to win a race. By their nature, Maiden races attract horses with very little, or even no racecourse experience, so it is always worth keeping an eye on the horses who win or run well, as they may have the potential to progress through the ranks. Our thanks go to the European Breeders Fun for their sponsorship of this race and for their continued support of British racing. Of course, it is a real shame that we are unable to host music after racing tonight due to the extension of government restrictions. However, we all have a role to play in preventing the spread of the virus and for that reason I draw your attention to the key points from our code of conduct, which can be found on page 11. I hope that you have a wonderful time here at Epsom Downs and I very much hope to welcome you back again in the near future. SIMON DURRANT General Manager Epsom Downs Racecourse

MAMILLIUS emerged with plenty of credit when just denied by one that raced on the seemingly favoured stand side at Brighton 9 days ago so rates a serious player off the same mark. SIR DAVID PROSSER TROPHY TO BE AWARDED TO MOST SUCCESSFUL EPSOM TRAINER

The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2021 racing season. The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020. Wins at all racecourses across the country count towards the trophy and Simon Dow leads the way with 14 winners so far. Brett Johnson is a close second with 11 winners and Jim Boyle lies in third place with 10 winners. Standings as of 30th June 2021. Trainer Simon Dow

THE LADIES’ DERBY The Ladies’ Derby, run over the full Derby course and distance, was inaugurated in 2009, though Ladies’ races had been run previously at Epsom, most recently as 1996. The race gives a once-a-year opportunity for the Lady Amateurs to experience the unique contours and undulations of this historic racecourse. The race forms part of a series of ‘Derbys’ run after THE Derby in June. As well as the Ladies’ Derby, the Gentlemens’ Derby takes place on Monday August 30th, the Jump Jockeys’ Derby on Thursday September 9th, and the Apprentices’ Derby on Sunday September 26th. Past winners of the Ladies’ Derby:

HESPERIS showed improved form upped in trip for her handicap debut at Yarmouth for all she needed the stewards’ help to claim her first win, and she should have more to offer after just 4 career starts. Scarborough Castle and Reeceltic both caught the eye last time so also need considering.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Epsom Downs Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
