EPSOM DOWNS RACECOURSE WELCOMES YOU
It is a pleasure to welcome you to Epsom Downs this evening for six exciting races on this historic racecourse. One of the most fascinating aspects of an evening at the races is trying to pick a winner or two, a task which is made all the more difficult when you have very little – or even no – previous form to go on. This is the case in our third race this evening, the British Stallion Studs EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, a race for two-year-old female horses who are yet to win a race. It is often the most difficult puzzles that are the most rewarding to solve. Our thanks go to the European Breeders Fun for their sponsorship of this race and for their continued support of British racing. The fourth race on this evening’s card is the Walton-On-The-Hill Handicap, which is a qualifier for the Jockey Club’s Grassroots Flat Series (Sprint division). This initiative is aimed at offering enhanced prize money to horses who tend to do their racing at a notch or two below Group or Listed level. It consists of four divisions – Sprint, Middle Distance, Stayers and Nursery – for which there are at least 16 qualifiers across Jockey Club Racecourses throughout the summer. The initiative culminates with Grassroots Finals Day at Nottingham on 29 September, when there is a prize fund of £70,000 on offer across the four races. Of course, it is a real shame that we are unable to host music after racing tonight due to the extension of government restrictions. However, we all have a role to play in preventing the spread of coronavirus and for that reason I draw your attention to the key points from our code of conduct, which can be found on page 9. I hope that you have a wonderful time here at Epsom Downs and I very much hope to welcome you back again in the near future. PLAY SMARTER
There were excuses for THE WHIPMASTER’s slightly below-par fifth at Sandown last month, the drop back to 7f looking against him and meeting trouble as his stamina began to kick in late. He’s taken to get back to winning ways and notch his third victory from his last four starts. Muhalhel could provide the main danger having been denied in the stewards’ room at Nottingham recently, ahead of Maxine.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Epsom Downs Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
