EPSOM DOWNS RACECOURSE WELCOMES YOU
It is a pleasure to welcome you to Epsom Downs this evening for six exciting races on this historic racecourse. Good evening and welcome to Epsom Downs for our Summer Evening Racing fixture. We have a competitive six-race card of Flat racing for you to enjoy, with a mix of handicap action and maiden races for inexperienced horses, many of whom will be having their first experiences of the unique undulations of the racecourse. Our thanks go to our sponsors this evening for their generous support of this evening’s fixture. Since the last time we raced, the racing world received the sad news that 2001 Derby winner Galileo has passed away. His win here, and the effect that he went on to have on the Derby through his extraordinary career as a stallion, will be fondly remembered by all in the racing world and ensure he will never be forgotten. Whilst the quality of racing on show this evening may be familiar, due to the current restrictions the experience we are able to offer here at Epsom Downs may be a little different to the last time you were with us. I would ask for your help and understanding as we look to provide a safe and enjoyable event for everyone who is attending this evening, by following the guidance set out around the racecourse and listening to our team on site who are here to assist you. Thank you for choosing to spend your evening with us. I hope you have a fantastic evening and enjoy the great racing we have on offer SIMON DURRANT General Manager Epsom Downs Racecourse

SIR DAVID PROSSER TROPHY TO BE AWARDED TO MOST SUCCESSFUL EPSOM TRAINER
The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2021 racing season. The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020. Wins at all racecourses across the country count towards the trophy and Simon Dow leads the way with 14 winners so far. Brett Johnson is a close second with 11 winners and Jim Boyle lies in third place with 10 winners. Standings as of 14th July 2021. Trainer

The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2021 runs from 5th November 2020 to 4th November 2021. Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future. MYTHICAL MADNESS did well to get up late over C&D a week ago and remains well treated on old form, so he’s an obvious choice to follow up in a thin contest. Platinum Prince is a danger if he’s in the mood, while Never Said Nothing’s recent third in a claimer gives hope that he could make his presence felt.

AMALFI BAY was well on top (eased late) when scoring over C&D a week ago, so he seems a feasible option to follow up under a penalty. Fellow last-time-out winner Downsman could prove a formidable opponent, while Cemhaan shouldn’t be dismissed having just failed at Windsor 3 weeks ago.

DISCOVER BRITISH RACING’S
DERBY LEGEND MICK KINA
In recent years no horse has left a greater impression on the Derby than 2001 winner Galileo who went on to sire a record five winners of the race. Following the sad news of his passing, his jockey Mick Kinane reflects on what made him so special. While Kinane’s days of riding may now be over he fondly recalls the emergence of Galileo, which started back in October 2000 when the son of Sadler’s Wells slammed his rivals by 14 lengths in a mile maiden at Leopardstown. Kinane said: “He just blitzed them that day in Leopardstown. From the get go, he was a very special individual. Any horse can win by such a distance but it was the ease that he did it and he was always going to be better as a three year old. “I won on him in the Ballysax and I missed riding him in the Derrinstown, which is Ireland’s best Derby trial, as I was riding in the French Guineas but he appeared to be ahead of anything else Aidan had at the time. “Milan came along later in the year but at that point there was nothing to take to The Derby ahead of Galileo. He was the standout at that time.” Having conquered all before him in Ireland a new challenge awaited Galileo in taking on the best of the British on his first start over a mile and a half at Epsom, but it was one he would ultimately prove more than equal to. Kinane said: “I was lucky enough when those gates opened I was on my own there and it was a very easy race to deal with. I was in control all the way and he travelled well and he skipped round. It was one of the few Derbys you could really enjoy because you were in control of what was around you. He was so balanced and he went around there on rails.
ANE REMEMBERS GALILEO “I let him level out and get balanced and let him surge on. Once I did quicken, I knew the race was over. He was totally dominant. It was nice coming down Tattenham Corner knowing you had everything in control all around you. He was a winner every step of the way. My hand was never forced at any stage with him, we moved when I wanted to move with him. “Even if there was a horse going well behind me they weren’t going to match him. When you ride those good horses there is always something under the bonnet and it is always a great sensation.” Though Kinane, who recently turned 62, also tasted Derby success aboard Commander In Chief in 1993 and Sea The Stars in 2009, he still admits to this day that Galileo remains his favourite ever ride in the race. He said: “If you asked me to pick a horse at the beginning of June to ride in the greatest Derby, if you could re-run them all together, I would pick Galileo as he was so mature at that time of year and well suited to the track. “He was a very mature three year old at the beginning of June which was a huge help. He was a beautifully sized horse, a little over 16 hands. “He got better through the summer but we knew we had a finished article which is hard to get in the first week in June and I would probably pick him as my favourite Derby horse. “Like him, his progeny are very genuine and very tough and he has passed that down and his legacy will be around for a long time.”

FRED wasn’t disgraced in a typically competitive renewal of the Carlisle Bell last month and is appealing back on a more suitable track. Indeed, four of his five career wins have come on left-handed courses and he could take some pegging back if allowed an easy lead. Prince of Bel Lir shapes as though this trip will suit and he is next on the list, while recent C&D scorer Otago also has claims.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Epsom Downs Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
