Gestation

This chart shows the destination of any Irish broodmares which have been permanently exported. France remains the top importer of Irish broodmares, with the USA importing the second largest number of mares in 2022. (Movement of mares from Ireland to Great Britain is not recorded as such movements are within the General Stud Book area)

In preparation for covering, many Thoroughbred broodmares travel, before foaling, to the stud where the stallion of choice resides – this can often be in another country. This therefore masks the full productivity of Irish mares, as foals out of those mares would not be born

This table shows the total number of foals produced by Irish domiciled mares, as well as the number of IRE born foals out of non-IRE domiciled mares.

*N.B: The 2022 figure will increase as stallion notifications are frequently received in the following year and the figures here are as at 31/12/22.

The proportion of stallions standing for National Hunt racing purposes has increased from 33% in 2019 to 39% in 2022. Conversely, the proportion of stallions standing for Dual Purpose has decreased by 9% in the same period.

We expect further stallion registrations for 2022 as noted above

The 2022 figure will increase as stallion notifications are frequently received in the following year and the figures here are as at 31/12/22.

The proportion of first season, second season and established sires in the active stallion population has remained fairly constant over the last 4 years.
