Welcome to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby I am delighted to welcome you to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby as we celebrate our 14th year as title sponsor and our 20th year in association with The Curragh Racecourse. This year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby marks the 155th running of the historic race which was first run in 1866. The race meeting also marks the return of spectators to sport in Ireland, and while the numbers are limited at this time for safety reasons, we are delighted to be part of this gradual return to normalcy. Despite the challenges of the past year, Dubai Duty Free has continued to operate its retail business at Dubai International Airport and in June last year introduced a Home Delivery service for UAE residents, which has proven popular. In December 2020 we marked our 37th anniversary and recorded annual sales of US$697 million. I am very proud of the great efforts made by our team of staff and managers in the past year and I am very grateful to His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, for his ongoing support of our operation. Dubai Duty Free continued to invest in sports sponsorship over the past year and, despite most events being held behind closed doors, we were glad to support our partners such as The Curragh and to continue to promote our brand and the city of Dubai. In addition to our sponsorship of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, we are looking forward to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open taking place at the beautiful Mount Juliet Estate from 1-4th July. In August we return to Ascot for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and in September we return to the historic Newbury Racecourse for the Dubai Duty Free International Raceday. In March of this year the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which is owned and organised by Dubai Duty Free, was staged in Dubai. The tournament went fantastically well with the WTA week being won by two-time Grand Slam winner and former World No.1 Garbiñe Muguruza, while Wild Card entrant, Aslan Karatsev, won his very first ATP title. I would also like to pay tribute to all the frontline workers around the world for working relentlessly and tirelessly during this difficult year. You are real heroes for us all. Lastly, I would like to thank the Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board, Horse Racing Ireland and The Curragh Racecourse for keeping the racing going and for safely overseeing the return of spectators to the sport. I am sure that the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby will bring the usual level of excitement that we all associate with this great race meeting. I wish you all a pleasant day of racing and stay safe. Colm McLoughlin Executive Vice Chairman & CEO Dubai Duty Free

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 7

The Curragh has always been and continues to be an “essential” part of his training regime.

TIGGY HANCOCK

The Curragh and the whole Irish HorseRacing Community would like to pay a heartfelt tribute to Tiggy, who was laid to rest last Monday in County Carlow following a tragic accident. Our sincere condolences to her adoring family and many friends. May she rest in peace. 13

PAT SMULLEN - A LEGACY

14

Pat was a true legend, and his achievements speak for themselves. He was Champion Jockey on no fewer than nine occasions and rode almost 2,000 winners worldwide. He was stable jockey to Dermot Weld for 20 years and the Curragh was his second home. Even after all his success at the Curragh as a jockey, it was out of the saddle that he had perhaps his finest day here when he was the driving force behind the Pat Smullen Champions Race For Cancer Trials Ireland on Longines Irish Champions Weekend 2019, which raised €2.5 million for Cancer Trials Ireland for their work into pancreatic cancer trials and research. That is a day that will never be forgotten by those lucky enough to be there. The Pat Smullen Jockeys Room mosaic mural tribute was designed by Pat’s wife Frances and her artist sister Monika Crowley who worked with Richie Buttle from ProPhoto in Co Wexford to develop the artwork. The mosaic mural is made up of over 400 photos of Pat which were donated from many of Pat’s friends and colleagues. 15

PAT SMULLEN - A LEGACY

GREY SWALLOW - 2004

Pat recorded his first Irish Derby win in 2004, onboard the Dermot Weld-trained Grey Swallow. Aptly named, the son of Daylami was a talented juvenile, winning impressively by 10 lengths on debut at Galway. Rested for three months, he made his second juvenile start at Leopardstown in the Killavullan Stakes, winning impressively by eight lengths. He made his three-year-old debut in the 2,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown, beating the Aidan O’Brien-trained Meath, before travelling to Newmarket for the 2000 Guineas, in which he finished fourth. Returned to Ireland for the Irish equivalent, finishing third. Smullen was at his best aboard Grey Swallow in the 2004 Irish Derby, where he rousted his mount home to beat Epsom Derby winner North Light. Smullen made use of his mount’s speed over the mile and a half trip and settled him nicely, capping a memorable victory in front of a packed grandstand. Grey Swallow raced on, finishing a close fourth in the Irish Champion Stakes a three-year-old before proigressing at four to win the Tattersalls Gold Cup on his seasonal debut.

HARZAND - 2016

20

Pat recorded his second Irish Derby win in 2016, for another Dermot Weld trainee, this time with the Aga Khan-owned Harzand. This son of Sea The Stars hails from an exceptional Aga Khan family. Fifth on his debut as a juvenile, Harzand showed significant development as a three-year-old, winning at Cork on his seasonal debut and following that win up in the Ballysax at Leopardstown. After a short break he was sent to Epsom for the Derby on only his third start. A typically perfect ride from Smullen saw Harzand come home in front, landing a remarkable victory for connections. Returned to the Curragh for the Irish equivalent, Smullen was again at his best to guide home Harzand in confident style to see off the challenge of Idaho by half a length. His next two runs at Leopardstown and Chantilly didn’t go to plan, but Harzand goes down in history as one of the few horses to do the Epsom-Curragh Derby double.

CURRAGH COMMENT Make A Challenge returned to somewhere near his best when runner-up in the Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes here last month and the drop in class warrants him the utmost respect. However, he could prove vulnerable against an improver in the shape of ROMANTIC PROPOSAL. She has taken a big step forward this season, most notably when second in a Group 3 at the course earlier in the month, and is in the right hands to continue her progression. Loch Lein (third) and Teresa Mendoza (fourth) were behind the selection on that occasion and they appear to be the pick of the remainder.

14 YEARS OF THE DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY

2021 marks the 14th year of sponsorship by Dubai Duty Free of the Irish Derby, the premier Classic in the Irish flat racing season.

2008

The first year of sponsorship by Dubai Duty Free of the Irish Derby yielded a familiar result, with the Aidan O’Brien-trained Frozen Fire making a winning debut at the Curragh and running out the 16/1 winner under Seamie Heffernan.

Fame And Glory went one better at the Curragh than at Epsom, winning cosily under Johnny Murtagh by a five length margin. Settled into mid-division, Fame And Glory stretched away a furlong from the finish to win comfortably.

2010

A talented son of Galileo, Cape Blanco made it five in a row for Aidan O’Brien when seeing off stablemates Midas Touch and Jan Vermeer to run out a half length winner and land back to back renewals of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby for Johnny Murtagh.

Treasure Beach was only beaten a head at Epsom but made amends at the Curragh, winning in the hands of Colm O’Donoghue. He led home a Ballydoyle 1-2-3, with Seville and Memphis Tennessee rounding out the placings.

2012

2009

2011

Camelot made it five races in a row and maintained his unbeaten record when winning as 1/5 favourite under Joseph O’Brien, marking a first Irish Derby for the rider. He saw off four rivals to win cosily and maintain his reputation as a leading colt.

36

It was up to Jim Bolger to halt the period of Ballydoyle dominance, and Trading Leather did so in 2013. A winner of the Silver Stakes on his previous win, he got the better of Galileo Rock, Festive Cheer and Ruler Of The World to win the 2013 renewal.

2014

One of the best winners of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, Australia was imperious and made it an Epsom-Curragh double when winning as 1/8 favourite under Joseph O’Brien. He made it another 1-2-3 for Ballydoyle, with Kingfisher and Orchestra in behind.

Behind Golden Horn at Epsom, Jack Hobbs showed his class to win the 2015 renewal of the race under William Buick for John Gosden and the Godolphin team. He became the first British-trained winner since Balanchine in 1994.

2016

2017

2013

2015

A fine winner under Pat Smullen, Harzand backed up his dominant Epsom victory by winning cosily to give Dermot Weld his first winner of the race since Grey Swallow in 2004, who was also ridden to victory by Pat Smullen.

Capri showed grit and determination to turn round the form from Epsom and come out on top in a blanket finish under Seamie Heffernan. Delivered late, he beat Cracksman into second and Epsom winner Wings Of Eagles into third.

A first Classic winner for Joseph O’Brien as a trainer, and a first Irish Classic winner for brother Donnacha in the saddle, Latrobe improved from his course and distance maiden win to see off Rostropovich and the talented Saxon Warrior.

37

2018

2019

A surprise winner of the 2019 renewal, Sovereign was most impressive when making all under Padraig Beggy to see off Epsom winner Anthony Van Dyck and six other rivals by a wide six length margin.

2020

A comfortable winner at Royal Ascot, Santiago was backed up quickly and just held off the late surge of stablemate Tiger Moth to record another Classic winner for Seamie Heffernan and Aidan O’Brien.

CURRAGH COMMENT More Beautiful has been competing in Group company on her three outings this year and will no doubt prove very popular for trainer Aidan O’Brien. On her seasonal reappearance in the 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown, the half-sister to Saxon Warrior finished ninth, two lengths behind AMBER KITE, who reopposes today. The Ger Lyons-trained filly had plenty of work to do from the rear of the field but hit the line with conviction and looks poised to go close now 3lb better off with the Ballydoyle candidate. Galtee Mist arrives in a rich vein of form and completes the shortlist of dangers.

SHERGAR - 40 YEARS ON

2021 marks 40 since since the victory of Shergar in the Irish Derby. A superstar who the 1981 Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby, before following up at Ascot in the King

46

transcended the sport of thoroughbred racing, Shergar became known for winning George VI Stakes, where he beat older rivals in an almighty race.

47

Shergar emerged as a star at Epsom in the Derby, where he was a wide margin winner under Walter Swinburn. In a performance which stopped the racing world, he was the easiest Derby winner in history and looked to have the world at his hooves. The 1981 Irish Derby saw Lester Piggott take over from Walter Swinburn in the saddle due to a suspension. Piggott moved Shergar into the lead with three furlongs left to race and won easily, comfortably accounting for Cut Above and Willie Carson back in second. His Curragh romp remains one of the best performanes in the history of the Irish Derby, proving he was not just above average, but exceptional.

THE GAIN RAILWAY STAKES The Railway Stakes is one of the oldest two-year-old races in the country having first been run in 1851. From 1973 through to 2002 it held Group 3 status and since then it has been run as a Group 2 contest. It is the premier domestic trial for the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes run in August and since 2005 6 horses have won both races – George Washington (2005), Holy Roman Emperor (2006), Mastercraftsman (2008), Alfred Nobel (2009), Sudirman 2013 and Siskin (2019). For the first time this year, the GAIN Railway Stakes forms part of the “Champion Collection”, a series of three races forming a clear pathway of progression for two-year-olds. The winner of today’s race gains an automatic entry to the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes, the first two-year-old Group 1 race of the season. The first race in the series, the GAIN First Flier Stakes, was won by Fozzy Stack’s talented Castle Star, who then followed up in the second race of the series, the GAIN Marble Hill Stakes. The talented son of Starspangledbanner has looked much the best juvenile sprinter around following those two fine wins. A host of talented horses have won the GAIN Railway Stakes. Subsequent Champion Sire and sire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Paddy O’Prado to name a few, El Prado, won this race under Lester Piggott in 1991 for trainer Vincent O’Brien, while the 2000’s saw a period of dominance by Aidan O’Brien. King of Kings became O’Brien’s first winner in 1997, with the likes of Rock of Gibraltar, George Washington, Holy Roman Emperor and Mastercraftsman all successful in the race during unrivalled Ballydoyle success. Back to back winners trained in the UK, Formosina and Lilbourne Lad, trained by Jeremy Noseda and Richard Hannon Sr respectively, marked a notable sea change and it wasn’t until 2015 that Aidan O’Brien won the race again, with Painted Cliffs. In recent years, Ger Lyons has tasted success, first with Medicine Jack in 2016 and then Siskin in 2019, both ridden by Colin Keane. In last year’s renewal, Ken Condon recorded a welcome win with Laws Of Indices, a

50

talented son of Power who defied big odds to win under Chris Hayes. Ridden for the first time by Hayes, Laws Of Indices started the 66/1 outsider of the field, which included the smart Lucky Vega, Aidan O’Brien’s Merchants Quay and the Ger Lyons-trained favourite, To Glory. Held up at the back of the field, Hayes moved his mount into a challenging positon two furlongs out and asked is mount for more in the final furlong, where he tenaciously took up the lead. He had to dig deep and battle on to see off the challenge of the Jessica Harrington-trained Lucky Vega, but he did so in fine style and kept on nicely at the business end of the race to record a half length win. Check out the race replay below.

An exciting juvenile, Castle Star made it back to back wins in pattern company last time with a mightily impressive performance in the GAIN Marble Hill Stakes last time out. Just beaten on debut at Cork, Castle Star was beaten by the talented Glounthaune on his first run at the Curragh over six furlongs and showed progression to win the GAIN First Flier Stakes. Ran over the shorter five furlongs, the GAIN First Flier Stakes formed the first race in the GAIN Champions Collection and made Castle Star’s next target an easy won. He met expectations next time out to become a Group 3 winner, and as one of the most exciting juveniles in Ireland he looks to have the sprinting juvenile division at his feet.

CURRAGH COMMENT In a very competitive renewal of this Group 2 the marginal preference is for DR ZEMPF, who created a big impression when making a wining debut over C&D earlier in the month. The son of Dark Angel accounted for a decent field on that occasion and he should have more to offer with that experience now under his belt. Go Bears Go and Cadamosto are closely matched and obvious threats to the selection following decent efforts in the Norfolk recently, where the draw appeared to be against them. Castle Star is another with valid form claims following his Marble Hill victory last month, while Masseto completes the shortlist.

An unbeaten star at the time of his Curragh triumph, Galileo saw off his rivals easily at Epsom before dispatching them with similar content in the Irish equivalent. Ridden by Mick Kinane, who rode him in all his starts, Kinane let his mount make smooth progress into the straight and took the lead up two furlongs from the finish. He stretched away, winning easily by four lengths over his rivals, with Morshdi back in second, Golan back in third and a certain Vinnie Roe back in seventh.

Few horses in the thoroughbred world have had the same impact on the breed as Galileo. Not only a super sire in his own right, many of his progeny have become sires in their own right, making him a sire of sires. His impact on the Irish Derby has been unchallenged, with his bloodline traceable back through some iconic winners of this race.

THE CURRAGH OF KILDARE The Curragh is delighted to welcome the Maher Family to perform the racecourse anthem, Curragh of Kildare, before the running of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

THE CURRAGH OF KILDARE (LYRICS) The winter it has passed And the summer’s come at last And the birds they are singing in the trees, Their little hearts are glad, Ah, but mine is very sad Since my true love is far away from me And it’s straight I will repair To the Curragh of Kildare, For it’s there I’ll find tidings of my dear. The rose upon the briar By the waters running clear Brings joy to the linnet and the bee And their little hearts are blessed But mine can know no rest Since my true love is far away from me And it’s straight I will repair To the Curragh of Kildare, For it’s there I’ll find tidings of my dear. A livery I’ll wear And I’ll comb back my hair And in velvet so green I will appear And it’s straight I will repair To the Curragh of Kildare, For it’s there I’ll find tidings of my dear. And it’s straight I will repair To the Curragh of Kildare, For it’s there I’ll find tidings of my dear And it’s straight I will repair To the Curragh of Kildare, For it’s there on the Curragh of Kildare. 66

The Maher family hail from Newbridge, Co. Kildare and is made up of dad Dave and his daughters Stacy 19, Robyn 17 and 12 year old Ruby. Their debut single “Lullaby for the World”, written by Irish songwriter Brendan Graham, made it to number 2 on iTunes and was selected as the official song for World Earth Day 2021. Ruby was previously part of Will.I.Am’s team on the Voice UK Kids and the group are now signed by Rick Blaskey who has previously worked closely with iconic legends Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Barry Manilow and Cliff Richard. THE DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY TROPHY The trophy, entitled “Excellence” has been inspired by the Curragh Racecourse itself and features the undulating shapes of the round courses and the challenging turns and testing uphill finish of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby course. The trophy centre piece is a magnificent silver horse and rider which has been embellished with over 100 crystals, symbolising purity, strength and excellence. The track layout has been made from silver which has been meticulously crafted by hand by master craftsman, Lorcan Harney and mounted on an elliptical surround. Layers of silver were set onto the elliptical form for dramatic effect. Nora Ulrich, the head designer at Newbridge Silverware said, “We wanted to capture a sense of movement and by layering silver material, this allows the trophy to look different from each angle, representing the sense of horses in motion”.

DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY WE LOOK BACK AT SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE WINNERS THAT HAVE HELPED SHAPE THE DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY INTO ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS RACES IN THE WORLD

HISTORY The first running of the race in 1866 saw the English raider Selim (5/4) beat the even-money favourite Tom King by three lengths with Fire Eater back in third. There were only three runners. Back then, the Irish Derby was run on the second day of a four-day meeting and Selim won on each day. He had a walk-over on the first day, the day after the Irish Derby he again beat Tom King in the three-mile Queen’s Plate and on the final day he won over four miles. Selim was bred by Dublin sports writer D. Kinsella and was owned by Englishman James Cockin who was based at Hednesford in Staffordshire and made frequent raids on Irish races. In its first six years the Irish Derby was run over a mile-and-three-quarters, but from 1872 onwards it has taken place over the traditional distance of a mile-and-a-half.

1970 NIJINSKY Vincent O’Brien won the Irish Derby on seven occasions during his career and perhaps the most iconic of those victories was that of Nijinsky in 1970. The son of Northern Dancer arrived at The Curragh for the Irish Derby as the unbeaten winner of the 2000 Guineas and Derby and he didn’t disappoint. Nijinsky would go on to even greater fame in the months after that, completing the fabled Triple Crown by winning the St Leger at Doncaster. To this day, no other horse has completed the Triple Crown.

1981 SHERGAR

Having won the Derby by no less than 10 lengths in 1981, he arrived at The Curragh for the Irish Derby on a wave of expectation. With Lester Piggott taking over the reins from Walter Swinburn, the son of Great Nephew made no mistake, prevailing by a very easy four lengths. After his racing career finished later that year, Shergar returned to The Curragh to stand as a sire in Ballymany Stud. Such was the regard he was held in by Irish racing people, he was paraded down the main street in Newbridge in scenes unlikely to ever be repeated. 68

1992 ST JOVITE 1990 SALSABIL Prior to the 1990 renewal of the Irish Derby, 90 years had passed since a filly had won the race.

There have been few more spectacular winners than St Jovite in 1991. While the son of Pleasant Colony had finished second to Dr Devious in the Derby earlier that month, the rematch at the Curragh was no contest at all, with St Jovite powering away from his rival to score by a remarkable 12 lengths.

Despite the race being contested by the Derby winner Quest For Fame and the highly-regarded Belmez, it was the John Dunlop-trained 1000 Guineas and Oaks winner Salsabil that was the focus of attention. It was highly unusual for such a talented filly to take on the colts in a Classic, so when Willie Carson guided her to a ¾-length victory, it created a sensation.

It wasn’t just a visually impressive performance either, as he came home in a time of 2 minutes 25.6 seconds, which smashed the previous race record of 2 minutes 28.8 seconds set by Tambourine II in 1962. It is a record that stands to this day.

2001 GALILEO Arguably the best of Aidan O’Brien’s twelve winners of the Irish Derby is Galileo, who won by four lengths in 2001. The son of Sadler’s Wells followed his Epsom success with another smooth victory in the hands of Mick Kinane before completing a notable treble when landing the King George at Ascot. He has since become the greatest stallion of his generation, to date siring five winners of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby. 69

An unexposed type with just three runs under his belt, the Ballydoyle team have elected to run their up and coming three-year-old at the Curragh for his Classic aim. A cosy winner on debut over a mile, his win in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes suggested the step up in trip would help to form his optimum conditions and he demonstrated promise when third in the Dante last time at York. There was an assumption that the big, galloping type would improve for his first outing and that run should have put him spot on for his date with destiny in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby. He has the reputation, connections and pedigree suited to this task, can he deliver in the showpiece race today?

2021

2021 will mark the 156th running of the Irish Derby. This is the 14th year of sponsorship of Ireland’s flagship race by Dubai Duty Free.

History

The first running of the race in 1866 saw the English raider Selim (5/4) beat the even-money favourite Tom King by three lengths with Fire Eater back in third. In its first six years the Irish Derby was run over a mile-and-threequarters, but from 1872 onwards it has taken place over the traditional distance of a mile-and-a-half.

Female Trainers

The Irish Derby has never been won by a horse representing a female trainer. The Jessica Harrington-trained Gold Maze was the latest one to attempt to break the hoodoo in last year’s race.

British Challengers

British runners have traditionally enjoyed much success in the race (21 wins in the last 50 years), but have been relegated to a supporting role in recent times. The victory of Jack Hobbs in the 2015 renewal was the first British-trained success in the race since Balanchine in 1994. The biggest ever British raiding party was in 1996 when a nine-strong British team came up short behind the Dermot Weld-trained Zagreb.

Maidens The last maiden to win the Irish Derby was Sindon in 1958, trained by Michael Dawson in Ireland and ridden by Liam Ward.

Smallest/Largest Fields

The smallest ever field was in 1868 when Madeira defeated his sole rival, Bee Quick, by six lengths. Madeira only ran twice after his Irish Derby win where he was beaten on successive days at Bellewstown! 1962 witnessed the biggest ever turnout for the race as Tambourine II saw off 23 rivals to become the first ever French-trained winner of the race. 2012 and 2014 saw the joint smallest fields since 1912, with just four rivals taking their chances against the Derby heroes Camelot and Australia respectively. This year 12 runners is the biggest field since 2006.

French Challengers

Pardal, third in 1950, was the first French runner in the race. He was owned by Marcel Boussac and ridden by Rae Johnstone. French-trained horses have won the Irish Derby eight times in all including four victories in the last 25 years, namely; Hurricane Run in 2005, his sire Montjeu in 1999, Dream Well in 1998 and Winged Love in 1995. Malacate (1976), Irish Ball (1971), Prince Regent (1969) and Tambourine (1962) were the others.

Record Time The fastest winning time in the Derby was registered by St Jovite in 1992 when Jim Bolger’s brilliant colt came home in a time of 2 min 25.6 sec, which smashed the previous record of 2 min 28.8 sec set by Tambourine II in 1962. 72

Dead Heats

Only twice has the result of the Irish Derby come down to a dead heat and on both occasions the horses involved have been English-trained raiders. Haine and Zodiac shared the honours in 1924, while 10 years later Patriot King and Primero were inseparable passing the post.

Most Successful Jockey Morny Wing is the most successful jockey in the Irish Derby, recording six victories between 1921 and 1946. Steve Donoghue and Lester Piggott both won five. Seamus Heffernan is the most successful current licenced jockey with three wins in the race.

Most Successful Owners

The 2016 victory of Harzand saw the Aga Khan overtake his grandfather His Highness the Aga Khan III as the most successful individual owner in the history of the race with what was his sixth success. The latter had his colours carried to victory five times between 1925 and 1949, while Shergar gave the present Aga Khan his first success in 1981 and was followed by Shahrastani (1986), Kahyasi (1988), Sinndar (2000), Alamshar (2003) and the aforementioned Harzand (2016). Mind, that title could well be disputed as various combinations of the Coolmore partners, namely John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, have owned 14 winners of the race in the last 22 years. Indeed, all bar one of the recent winners have all carried the silks of Derrick Smith, which puts him right behind the Aga Khan.

Winning Siblings The last siblings to win the race were Ribocco in 1967 and his full-brother Ribero in 1968. Both horses were trained in England by Fulke Johnson-Houghton, ridden by Lester Piggott and owned by Charles Engelhard.

Leading Sire

Another jointly held title, the accolade of the most successful sire in the race is held by Gallinule, Sadler’s Wells and the perennial Galileo – three giants of their time. Gallinule produced six winners between 1895 and 1901, while Sadler’s Wells got off the mark with Old Vic in 1989. The following year his daughter Salsabil won before Dream Well in 1998, Montjeu in 1999, Galileo in 2001 and High Chaparral in 2002. Sovereign’s 2019 win saw Galileo join Gallinule and Sadler’s Wells as the leading sire of the race with six winners.

Beaten French Derby Runners Cape Blanco was the last horse to be beaten in the French Derby (Prix du Jockey Club) before winning the Irish Derby in 2010. He is not alone in showing improved form here at the Curragh as five years earlier, Hurricane Run finished second in the Prix du Jockey Club before triumphing in the Irish Derby as favourite. In 1995, Winged Love improved from his third place at Chantilly to capture Ireland’s premier Classic.

Shortest Priced/Longest Priced Winner In 1907, Orby was the first horse to attempt the English-Irish Derby double and he duly obliged, with his starting price of 1/10 making him the shortest ever priced winner of the Classic. The shortest priced horse in the race since then was Australia at 1/8 in the 2014 renewal. Zarathustra is the longest-priced winner, prevailing at 50/1 in 1954. Ridden by Paddy Powell and trained by Michael Hurley, he had finished fifth in the Irish 2000 Guineas but had run badly in the Gallinule Stakes on his previous start.

* N.B The distance of the Prix du Jockey Club was shortened from 12 furlongs to 10½ furlongs in 2005.

Father-and-Son Combinations

Beaten Epsom Runners In Recent Years Both Frozen Fire in 2008 and Soldier of Fortune in 2007 finished unplaced at Epsom before triumphing in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh. Soldier of Fortune was fifth at Epsom while Frozen Fire was only 11th. Last year’s winner Capri finished 6th at Epsom before winning at the Curragh. Previous to that duo, the last horse to win the Irish Derby after having been unplaced at Epsom was Tyrnavos (12th at Epsom) who caused a 25/1 shock on soft ground in 1980. Others who were placed at Epsom before triumphing at the Curragh recently were Jack Hobbs (second at Epsom) in 2015, Treasure Beach (second at Epsom) in 2011, Fame and Glory (second at Epsom) in 2009, Dylan Thomas (third at Epsom) in 2006, Alamshar (third at Epsom) in 2003, St Jovite (second at Epsom) in 1992, Sir Harry Lewis (fourth at Epsom) in 1987, Law Society (second at Epsom) in 1985 and the great El Gran Senor (second at Epsom) in 1984. St Jovite’s win was unusual in that he turned the tables on his Epsom conqueror Dr Devious, finishing two lengths second to him at Epsom prior to inflicting a 12-length defeat on him at the Curragh.

The win of Camelot in 2012 was the first time in history that a father/son trainer/jockey combination was successful in the Irish Derby and they repeated the feat with Australia in 2014.

Record of Favourites in the Last 10 Years 2011 Carlton House – fourth 2012 Camelot – won 2013 Ruler Of The World – fifth 2014 Australia – won 2015 Jack Hobbs – won 2016 Harzand - won 2017 Wings Of Eagles - fourth 2018 Saxon Warrior - fourth 2019 Anthony Van Dyck - second 2018 Santiago - won

RACE FOUR

CURRAGH COMMENT Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won six of the last 10 renewals of this race and with five entries here, he has every chance of adding to that tally. HIGH DEFINITION has always been held in some regard at home and although he missed the Derby at Epsom after his Dante third, that sees him arrive here fresher than most. Mojo Star must be the best maiden in training after his second in the Epsom classic, and he could be ridden nearer to the pace here now Richard Hannon knows he stays the mile and a half, making him a serious danger. Hurricane Lane will be better suited by this track than Epsom and he can also get involved in the finish for Charlie Appleby and William Buick, and he may be the biggest danger to the favourite.

WIN: HIGH DEFINITION

DANGER: MAC SWINEY

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. Celebrating 10 Years in Partnership with the Curragh

81

THE A.R.M HOLDING INTERNATIONAL STAKES Originally held at Phoenix Park and run as the Whitehall Stakes, this race transferred to the Curragh in 1991. At various points it has been run over a mile and also nine furlongs but since 2010 it has been staged over its current distance of ten furlongs. At one time the race held Group 2 status but it has been run as a Group 3 since 2004. Two of the recent winners of the race have gone on to enjoy notable success in Australia with the 2018 scorer Yucatan scoring at Group 2 level in the Southern Hemisphere while the 2017 scorer Johannes Vermeer was beaten just half a length in that year’s Melbourne Cup. Between them Aidan O’Brien and Dermot Weld have dominated this race in recent times and up until recently, Emmet Mullins and Ralph Beckett are the only other trainers to have won this race since 2008. As we remember Pat Smullen this weekend, his name features heavily in the rich history of this race. Pat landed his first winner in 2005, onboard Moonlight Dance for Dermot Weld, and recorded a further four wins in the race, all aboard Dermot Weld-trained horses. Famous Name won in 2009, with Precious Gem following up in 2010 and Famous Name winning again, back to back, in 2011 and 2012. A consistent performer for the Juddmonte operation, Famous Name was placed in a French Derby and was a wide margin winner in all three of his successes. In 2009 he beat Staying On by two lengths, beat Irish Derby third Jan Vermeer by six lengths in 2011 and saw off a classy field by three and three quarter lengths in 2012. His wins capped off four successive years of wins for both Pat Smullen and Dermot Weld, before the Aidan O’Brien dominance came into full force.

82

Seamie Heffernan won the race back to back in 2013 and 2014 with Flying The Flag and Mekong River respectively, while the victory of the Ralph Beckett-trained Air Pilot was a welcome winner for UK trainers in 2015. Sir Isaac Newton, Johannes Vermeer and Yucatan resumed business as normal for Ballydoyle, before O’Brien the younger, Joseph, trained Buckhurst to victory in 2019 under Wayne Lordan. Last year the race was ran in October due to a shuffling of the calendar thanks to the COVID pandemic, but we saw a classy winner all the same. Noel Meade’s Helvic Dream had been a good third in the Northfields Handicap on Irish Champions Weekend the time before, and progressed well to win by seven a half lengths on his first run at Group 3 level. He was held up in rear by Colin Keane and travelled much the best throughout the rest, moving wide and sweeping past the field in fine style to record a huge win for the Meade yard. Since that win, Helvic Dream has progressed through his placings in races at the Curragh, before turning the form round to win the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup last time out. See a replay of his win in this race last year below.

RACE FIVE

CURRAGH COMMENT NJORD looked set to pick up Group races when bolting up in the highly-competitive Balmoral handicap at Ascot last October. Having taken a couple of runs to find his feet this year, his latest second to the very talented Kinross in the Group 3 John Of Gaunt Stakes suggested he is now ready to make his breakthrough in this company, with the return to this trip also promising to suit. His stablemate Cadillac looks the main danger having shown Group 1 potential as a juvenile. While he has faced a delayed return to action and is forced to shoulder a 5lb penalty, this step up in trip may bring out some improvement and he should get into the mix. The thriving Thunder Kiss also carries a penalty for her latest win but has the potential to progress further and shouldn’t be ruled out.

WIN: NJORD

CURRAGH COMMENT SINAWANN is officially the best horse in this race and he looks to have a cracking chance. The Kingman colt ran to a high level in four three-year-old appearances, winning at Group 3 level and beaten a short-head in the Group 2 Boomerang Mile, and he will likely improve for his comeback third in this company at Leopardstown 23 days ago. His main dangers look to be some of the younger rivals in the line-up, with State Of Rest particularly interesting equipped with a first-time tongue-tie on his seasonal reappearance. CURRAGH COMMENT The unexposed three-year-old HALE BOPP readily accounted for a dual subsequent winner over a mile at Cork last month and Ger Lyons’ colt merits the utmost respect on the back of that performance. A 12lb rise in the ratings has to be a slight concern but the son of Belardo may have plenty more to offer on just his fifth career start. The recent Leopardstown winner Eagle’s Flight may prove to be the main threat to the selection, although Coill Na Sionainne and Alhaazm also merit places on the shortlist.

RACE EIGHT

CURRAGH COMMENT ARCADIAN SUNRISE makes his handicap debut in this sphere following a victory in the autumn at Thurles. He already has race-fitness on side, following an impressive victory in a handicap hurdle at Punchestown last month, and the seven-year-old is unexposed in this code. Powerful Ted finished third in a competitive handicap on Irish Champions Weekend at Leopardstown and he can enter calculations following his return at the course earlier in the month, while Dewcup and Shoshone Warrior appear best of the remainder.

WIN: ARCADIAN SUNRISE
