THE TRACK A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.
TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE The feature race today is the Visit racingtv.com Handicap Stakes at 3: 3:30pm, run over the sevenfurlong urlong trip. Top-weight SHELIR is perhaps the class horse of the race, rac but the David O'Mearatrained ed five-year-old could find things difficult in giving so much we weight to many of his rivals. Those rivals include nclude the three-year-olds, GIOIA CIECA and TADREEB, who both b receive the 9lb WFA allowance wance and that makes them very dangerous. The latter was a ggood winner of a Thirsk contest over this trip 15 days ago for Mark Johnston and a 5lb rise is unlik unlikely to stop his progress, while the former, trained by Keith Dalgleish, was well-beaten ell-beaten in the Britann Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot, but has been dropped 3lb for that and has alwayss been highly-rated, so pperhaps a mark of 93 is lenient.
JOCKEYS TO WATCH H The Edinburgh Gin Jockeys' Championship here at Musselbur lburgh is hotting up and it's JOE FANNING who leads the way so far with a super six wins on the he board so far. He H has a ride in all of our seven races this afternoon and will certainly nly be looking to extend hhis lead with the likes of LILIKOI (2:20), TADREEB (3:30) andd NORTH WIND (4:35) all holding excelle excellent chances of making it into the winners' enclosure. With PAUL HANAGAN (second in the cha championship with four winners) not riding at the meeting today, it givess the young riders SAM JAMES JAM and CALLUM RODRIGUEZ a big chance to close se the gap on the leader. The former has rid rides in the first three races of the day, while the latter has six chances to add to his tally, inclu including on GIOIA CIECA in the feature race at 3:30.
TRAINERS TO WATCH
MARK JOHNSTON still holds a two-winner lead in the Edinburgh Gin Trainers' Championship at Musselburgh and he saddles three on the card, including two in the feature contest, TADREEB and ETON COLLEGE (3:30). However, today is a big opportunity for KEITH DALGLEISH to close the gap on the leader, with eight horses due to be saddled up by the Carluke-based trainer. GIOIA CIECA can go well in the feature, but CLAY REGAZZONI also holds strong claims in the 4:05, while he's double handed in the last (5:10), courtesy of THREE CASTLES and FELDSPAR, so will be hoping for a return late in the day!
RACE DESCRIPTIONS 1:45 THE BRITISH STALLION STUDS EBF RESTRICTED MAIDEN STAKES Our opener this afternoon is a five-furlong maiden stakes for two-year-olds which are EBF eligible and in Band D. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightlyraced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
2:20 THE WATCH ON RACING TV MEDIAN AUCTION MAIDEN FILLIES' STAKES A Median Auction Maiden Stakes is for horses yet to record a racecourse victory and is designed to try and ensure that only horses of similar ability take part. It does this by focusing on the breeding of the horses or more specifically, the average sale price of the sire’s progeny, as theoretically horses that were sold for similar sums should be of similar ability. This particular one mile contest is for three to five-year-old fillies and mares whose sire established one or more yearling sales in 2019, 2018 and 2017 respectively with a median price of not more than £25,000.
2:55 THE EVERY RACE LIVE ON RACING TV HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile, four and a half furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
3:30 THE VISIT RACINGTV.COM HANDICAP STAKES Another handicap race, this time for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95, and our feature contest of the afternoon. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 95 in this particular seven-furlong race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 90.
4:05 THE BET AT RACINGTV.COM HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
4:35 THE RACING TV PROFITS RETURNED TO RACING HANDICAP STAKES A fourth handicap contest on the bounce and this one is a five furlong race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
5:10 THE 100% RACING TV PROFITS BACK TO RACING HANDICAP STAKES Closing out the card this evening is another handicap race for four-year-olds and older which have been rated from 46 to 60. This handicap is run over the staying trip of two miles and like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 65 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 60. We hope you've had a great day and look forward to welcoming you back to Musselburgh soon!

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED
Eaach horse has beeen given a star ratingg, these are defined beloow: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selectedd to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chancce of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means ouut of the reeckoning but at least one or two hold stronger cllaims. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win butt not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance.
PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!
Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
3. PLACE YOUR BET.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’.
2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. 3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.
GOOD LUCK!

Only a handful of these make any serious appeal, with George Boughey’s FIRE EYES getting the vote to build on her encouraging start when third at Windsor last month. With the promise of better to come, she should prove tough to beat. Things didn’t go to plan for Lilikoi on her handicap debut so she’s feared most back in maiden company, ahead of David O’Meara’s debutante Imperial Eight.

PLAY SMARTER
DE MAZZARO shaped well in different headgear back on the Flat on his first outing since leaving the training care of his still-owner Victor Thompson at Beverley last week, just failing having made his effort earlier than ideal. The gamble on him that day was significant and his backers can gain compensation here. Beverley 1-3 Edgar Allan Poe and Tarnhelm should figure again.

A fascinating feature contest that can go the way of Mark Johnston’s progressive TADREEB, who continues to go from strength to strength and can defy a 5lb rise in the weights having made a winning start to life in handicaps at Thirsk just over a fortnight ago. Pistoletto is tough to win with but he’s feared most in his current mood, with True Blue Moon next on the list.

PLAY SMARTER
Though disappointing at Newcastle when last seen in December, TEFNUT is well worth another chance now switched to turf off a reduced mark. Indeed, she showed enough on her first 3 starts to suggest that a race of this nature would be within her grasp. If the first-time visor helps stablemate Clay Regazzoni he will be a big threat, while Sands Chorus is 2-3 this season and should be thereabouts.

A typically competitive sprint handicap with the vote in favour of DENZIL’S LAUGHING.
