STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Eaach horse has beeen given a star ratingg, these are defined beloow: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selectedd to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chancce of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means ouut of the reeckoning but at least one or two hold stronger cllaims. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win butt not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance.

PLACING A BET HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING. 1. PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection. 2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse. 3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop. 4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET.

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet. - Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off. - Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings. - Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. - Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

THE TRACK A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

TODAY’S FEATURE TURE RACE The feature race today is the Sky Bet Sunday Series Fillies' Handicap, a C Class 4 contest over a mile staged taged at 5.45pm. Nine to go post with the field, with Mark Walford Walford's CANDESCENCE an interesting contender. ender. She's recorded three consecutive seconds in starts at Carlisle Car and York and looks kindly weighted ed on 80, but she faces a strong challenge from Marco Botti Botti's RISING STAR. She has ran well in handicaps andicaps so far, finishing a close enough second at Pontefract bbefore running just behind a smart type at Newmarket last time. She's been left on the same mark of 885 and that looks kind considering she finishing in front of a strong field, andd slightly up in trip she can c make her mark.

JOCKEYS TO WATCH H The Edinburgh Gin Jockeys' Championship here re at Musselburgh iis hotting up and it's JOE FANNING who leads the way so far with a seven wins on the boardd so far. fa He gets the leg up on Keith Dalgleish's Kraken Filly in the 5.45, Eton College forr Mark Johnston iin the 6.15 and Hint of Stars for Kevin Philipart de Foy in our final race.. While only riding three hhere today, Joe will be strongly fancied to be in the winners enclosure osure at least once this afternoon. We also a welcome Silvestre de Sousa to track today for just the one ride onboard Myristica for TTim Easterby. Owned by King Power Racing, this filly takes a step down wn in trip and could mak make her presence felt off a mark of 73.

TRAINERS TO WATCH

MARK JOHNSTON and KEITH DALGLEISH are tied at the top in the Edinburgh Gin Trainers' Championship and both send out runners with live chances today. Mark holds a strong hand today, with Overwrite, Asdaa and Silvestris representing him in our second race, Ellade carrying top weight in the nursery and both Eton College and Fred providing him with a good chance of landing our penultimate contest. Keith Dalgleish sends out seven runners, with Edward Cornelius in the opener, Noble Crusade in the 4.20, Ninky Nonk in the nursery at 4.45, Gometra Ginty and Kraken Filly in the 5.45 and Let Me Be and Euro Implosion in the last. Both trainers will be hoping for a winner or two this afternoon.

RACE DESCRIPTIONS 3:55 THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES EBF NEWCOMERS' MAIDEN STAKES This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

4:25 THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES APPRENTICE TRAINING SERIES HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile and 208 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 85. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

4:50 THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES NURSERY HANDICAP STAKES A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular five furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 85.

5:20 THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES SPRINT HANDICAP STAKES This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 80. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75.

5:45 THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES FILLIES' HANDICAP STAKES This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

6:15 THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES HANDICAP STAKES This is a seven furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 85. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 85 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

6:40 THE SKY BET SUNDAY SERIES STAYERS HANDICAP STAKES Closing the card is this one mile, five furlongs and 216 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 85. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 85 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

NOBLE CRUSADE is an improving 3-y-o who did well to come from off the pace to win at Carlisle last month and is narrowly preferred to the thriving Detective, who is a low-mileage 5-y-o who had more in hand than the bare margin suggests at Carlisle last time. Top-weight Overwrite could get the run of things back down in class and is another to consider.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW - CARLO BR Carlito Brigante enjoyed a long and illustrious career on the track, running a total of 47 times, winning ten races and amassing £233,000 in prize money. He ran on the flat, over hurdles and over fences and his highlights included winning the Coral Cup at the Cheltenham Festival and the John Smith’s Scottish Triumph Hurdle at Musselburgh. Throughout his long career he built up quite a following, not least in his latter racing years when trained by Karen McLintock at Ingoe. Since retiring from racing in 2015, the now 15-year-old gelding is proving equally versatile and perennially young at heart. He has been retrained by Rachel Sheill, who is no stranger to retraining former racehorses, having two others herself and has worked in racing for over 20 years. The pair have competed in dressage, showing and eventing classes, as well as at RoR National Championships held each August at Aintree. Rachel says that Carlito Brigante has such a strong sense of humour and is the ‘Peter Pan’ of the horse world, as he still believes he is, and occasionally behaves like, a twoyear-old: “He makes me smile on a daily basis, he sticks his tongue out for a sweetie if you ask him and he removes his rugs which you then find on the floor still intact and all fastened up. He will only drink from a blue bucket in his stable and he flaps his bottom lip very noisily at tea time.” Rachel is in regular contact with Carlito Brigante’s fans who love to hear about him and also with his former

RIGANTE

trainer, Karen McLintock, who enjoys regular updates about their progress. His biggest fan, who followed him throughout his racing career, has even been to visit and was delighted to have a sit onboard. Rachel adds: “I love thoroughbreds because they can achieve so much after racing. I love their athletic ability, intelligence and willingness to adapt and learn new things. They have simply given me the best days of my life!” For more information on the work of the RoR please visit www.ror.org.uk

A case can be made for a few of these but the most persuasive one is for REAL TERMS, who ran an excellent first race on turf when runner-up at Wetherby and can go one better now with that form working out really well.
