How To Bet

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:

1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.

2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:

• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.

• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.

• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.

• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!

3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.

4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.

5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!

6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

TIMEFORM VIEW Has raised her game the last twice, bagging back-to-back 17.2f Carlisle handicaps, latterly doing well to overcome a pace bias in a 9-runner contest in which she narrowly prevailed but probably had more in hand than the margin of victory would suggest. Race Summary: A strong renewal of this listed race, with several highly promising mares on show. LISTENTOYOURHEART was behind Jubilee Alpha in an Aintree bumper during the spring but she has improved since switched to this sphere, winning her two starts over hurdles in the manner of a mare going places. Conversely, Jubilee Alpha has been absent since Aintree, so Dan Skelton’s charge holds an edge both in terms of experience and match-fitness. Walkadina is third choice ahead of Rula Bula and Sansrisk.

The History Of The Coral Gold Cup

Datsalrightgino

The Coral Gold Cup was first run at Cheltenham in 1957 but was moved to Newbury after three years, forging a reputation as one of the most prestigious races in jumps racing. It has earned its place through the achievements of a glittering roll call of former winners, headed by Arkle, who represent many of the best chasers to have graced the sport.

Mill House, Bregawn, Burrough Hill Lad, One Man, Denman, Bobs Worth, Many Clouds and Native River were others to have embellished their careers with victory in the 3m2f handicap chase.

There have been no three time winners, Arkle narrowly failing when beaten by Stalbridge Colonist, to whom he was conceding 35lb, in 1966, and Denman finishing third in 2010.

The late Fulke Walwyn enjoyed multiple successes with an unmatched record of seven wins from Mandarin (1957 & 1961), Taxidermist (1958), Mill House (1963), Man of the West (1968), Charlie Potheen (1972) and Diamond Edge (1981).

Nicky Henderson (2005 Trabolgan, 2012 Bobs Worth & 2013 Triolo D’Alene) and Paul Nicholls (2003 Strong Flow, 2007 & 2009 Denman) are the most successful current trainers with three wins each.

Willie Robinson and Tom Scudamore have ridden the most winners of the race, Robinson on Mandarin (1961), Mill House (1963) and Man of the West (1968), and Scudamore on Madison du Berlais (2008), Sizing Tennessee (2018), Cloth Cap (2020).

There have been four horses that have captured the Coral Gold Cup and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season - Arkle, Bregawn, Denman and Bobs Worth.

Native River won the Coral Gold Cup and Welsh National in 2016 and the following season landed the 2018 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Many Clouds remains the only horse to have won both the Coral Gold Cup and the Grand National at Aintree.

Last year's renewal saw Jamie Snowden take the honours with Datsalrightgino.

TIMEFORM VIEW Confirmed chase debut promise when opening his account over C&D in March and followed up at Kempton (18f) in May. Ridden a little more patiently and soon done with following mistakes over 19.8f here 23 days ago but return to this shorter trip likely in his favour. TFRHHHII

TIMEFORMVIEW Fairly useful hurdler who tasted success on first 2 starts over fences last autumn. Mixed bag thereafter but returned from 7 months off/wind surgery with a sound second of 7 in handicap chase at Haydock (16.3f) 7 days ago. This tougher but each-way possibilities, nevertheless.

TIMEFORMVIEW Dual C&D winner last winter who ran well on final start at Kempton (18f) in April and resumed with a fine second of 10 in handicap chase at Ascot (16.8f) 4 weeks ago, that despite some less than fluent jumping. Not discounted especially back here. TFRHHHII

TIMEFORM VIEW Fairly useful hurdler and similar form over fences, doubling his tally with a run under his belt in 4-runner handicap chase at Wincanton (20f) 3 weeks ago, well suited by the emphasis on speed at the trip. Consistent sort but this will demand more back down in trip. TFRHHHII

TIMEFORMVIEW Took apart a small field with a run under his belt at Haydock (16.3f) 12 months ago. Best effort since when chasing home I’d Like to Know over C&D in March but absent since falling at Hereford (2m) later that month. Yard look to hold more pressing claims with Etalon. TFRHHIII

TIMEFORMVIEW Useful French hurdle/chase scorer who ended last term on the up for this yard, landing back-to-back handicaps at Chepstow (2m). Revised mark demands more but suspicion he could yet have more to offer given he remains pretty low mileage. TFRHHHII

TIMEFORMVIEW Chase winner in France who opened his hurdling account on third start for Paul Nicholls in a slowly-run Plumpton novice (20.5f, soft) in March However, only modest on both starts since, including when pulled up on debut for new yard at Cheltenham in October Has something to prove back over fences. Betting Forecast: 11-4 Imperial Saint (FR), 11-2 Petit Tonnerre (FR), 6-1 Etalon (IRE), 8-1 Issar d’Airy (FR), 10-1 Beau Balko (FR), 11-1 General Medrano (IRE), 12-1 I’d Like To Know (IRE), Prince Quali (FR), 33-1 Real Stone (GB), 40-1 Jetronic (FR)

Race Summary: Upwardly mobile during his first season over fences, ETALON ought to be sharper for his return to action in the Haldon Gold Cup 3 weeks ago and Dan Skelton’s charge is of definite interest with potential to rate significantly higher in this sphere yet. Imperial Saint has made a fine start himself over larger obstacles and rates a lead threat in his hat-trick bid. Petit Tonnerre, back in handicap company, and Issar d’Airy are others fancied to be in the mix. 1-2-3: 1.ETALON
