HOW TO USE

2 SELECT ‘WI-FI’ AND CHOOSE THE NETWORK NAMED ‘FREE WIFI’

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Colonel ‘Jacky’ Upton was a jockey Club Inspector of National Hunt Courses and instigated many improvements on the fences and hurdles for the safety of horses and jockeys. He always ensured that the fences were firm but fair He was a great friend of Geoffrey Freer and many good ideas were discussed whilst they were walking around the racecourse.
He retired from the Jockey Club in the early sixties due to ill health and died soon after.
His son, Pat Upton was an amateur rider but gave up race-riding due to a very bad fall in 1971 He was also a trainer for 17 years, based near Lambourn.

Race Summary: BILLYTHEREALBIGRED is a really likeable type and going from strength to strength over fences so can quickly resume winning ways on the back of an excellent Cheltenham second. Sandown-victor Vincenzo should find this longer distance in his favour and is next on the list, while C&D scorer Saint Segal and in-form pair Kotmask and Kandoo Kid can all have a say too. Beau Balko completes the shortlist in this cracking handicap.

Race Summary: A decent race for the grade and while the testing ground should go some way to providing the stamina test that plenty of these are needing, there doesn’t appear to be much pace on. That won’t bother the highly-progressive LOVEDOSE who has sat close to the speed when winning 4 of his last 5 starts. Race Summary: THERE RUNS MARY and Hill In Brazil dominated a Wincanton bumper a month ago and they may well come to the fore again. The latter is 4lb better off this time but the former arguably boasts more scope for improvement, so is selected to come out on top again. There are a trio of interesting Rules newcomers in opposition, too, notably Heron In The Park. 1-2-3:
