AFTERNOON RACING

SATURDAY 26 JUNE 2021 Official Racecard £3

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU Welcome back to the July Course. Welcome to Newmarket's July Course, thank you for being with us for what is shaping up to be an enjoyable and exciting afternoon of Flat racing. Our thanks go to Close Brothers and the family of Maureen Brittain for their sponsorship of this afternoon's card, when the racing on offer will feature some familiar names as well as the potential to unearth some future stars of the turf. Our feature race the Close Brothers Criterion Stakes has been won by some high class horses in recent years, none more so than the mercurial Limato who won the last two renewals prior to his retirement last Autumn. Whilst the quality of racing on show this afternoon may be familiar, due to the ongoing restrictions the experience we are able to offer here at the July Course may be a little different to the last time you were with us. I would ask for your help and understanding as we look to provide a safe and enjoyable event for everyone who is attending today, by following the guidance set out around the racecourse and listening to our team on site who are here to assist you. Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have a great afternoon and enjoy the high quality racing we have on offer. Best wishes, SOPHIE ABLE General ManagerWHAT’S ON SITE TODAY?

It’s likely that ACHELOIS would have made a real race of it with the eventual winner had she enjoyed a trouble-free passage at Sandown, and Andrew Balding’s charge is taken to gain compensation off the same mark here. The well-bred and unexposed Beheld merits serious consideration now pitched into a handicap and she is next on the list ahead of Dawndiva and Iconic Queen.

Dubai 2020 will be long remembered as the one of the most difficult years that our generation will have ever faced. Covid-19 has brought many challenges to everyday personal and business life. The Thoroughbred Racing Community across the globe have had to make many tough decisions to keep racing going albeit behind closed doors. As racecourses across the UK start to welcome a limited number of people back to their tracks, we would like to congratulate Sophie and her team at Newmarket Racecourse, The Home of British Racing, on their efforts and determination to bring back spectators. We know it isn’t the same as before but we look forward very much to returning to the track in numbers to enjoy the sport we all love. Good luck to all and stay safe. CLIVE BRITTAIN doesn’t pause for thought when considering the impact his beloved wife of 63 years had on his hugely successful training career. “Maureen was 95 per cent of the business,” explains the ever-popular former master of Carlburg Stables in Newmarket. Given that Clive recorded six British Classic victories, 14 Royal Ascot wins and numerous other big-race triumphs around the world, his assessment of ‘team Brittain’ rather underplays his own considerable talents. But it is almost certainly the case that without Maureen’s guiding influence and immense support, her husband’s career wouldn’t have scaled such heights. “She knew how to look after people – and all the rough edges I had she clipped back and made me presentable,” says Brittain with a smile. “I was always happy go lucky, anything for a laugh type of person, which can be alright in certain areas. But it needed a step above that. She turned me into a professional.” They couple met in 1952 when they were both working in Newmarket for Sir Noel Murless at Warren Place. Clive was a stable lad, while Maureen was Sir Noel’s secretary – a role she would fulfil until the early 1970s. Fate – or “sheer luck”, according to Clive – played its part in bringing the pair together. Clive found himself in hospital with cuts and bruises after falling from a van and Maureen was sent to see if the Wiltshire-born lad required anything. As Clive recalls, “That was the start of it,” and before long he had asked her to accompany him to the local Saturday-night dance. The duo were married in 1957 and continued to live and work at Warren Place. They were happy times for the couple but by 1972 – with Sir Noel coming towards the end of his distinguished career – Clive struck out on his own. It was something of a gamble, given he was stepping up from stable-lad status, but it paid off in spades over the subsequent 43 years. The Brittain combination proved to be a winning formula all round. While Clive had the Midas touch with horses and people, Maureen proved brilliantly adept at overseeing the business. She was also an excellent host, whose quiet and thoughtful style was much appreciated by owners at the stables and at the races, where she was an elegant presence. As Clive says, “She was quite a snappy dresser and never looked out of place.” In 2015, with Maureen becoming increasingly affected by dementia, Clive handed back his training licence. In his words, she’d given up more than 60 years to look after him and that it was about time he did the same for her. Maureen died last June and barely an hour passes without Clive fondly recalling the countless wonderful times he shared with her. “We had a tremendous life together,” he sums up. by Tony Rushmore

PLAY SMARTER

There was much to like about the way ROCK MELODY dispatched with her rivals at Redcar and, with the promise of better to come, she can be expected to take this step up in class in her stride. Cachet sets the standard judged on her Royal Ascot effort and she’s not passed over at all lightly, while Najat created a good impression on debut and is also shortlisted, along with Delmona and System.

PLAY SMARTER

ENCOURAGE has, on more than one occasion, left the impression there’s a bigger effort in him and the return to this trip could be the catalyst for it, so he gets the nod in a wide-open event. The in-form Willyorwon’t He is a clear threat and Khatm makes appeal switched to turf after a break.
