THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU Welcome to the Moët & Chandon July Festival It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the July Course for the Moët & Chandon July Festival. Today is Ladies’ Day, an occasion when the action on the turf is very much complemented by fashion and elegance in the enclosures. We have seven races to savour, including Group 2 action in the Tattersalls July Stakes and Princess of Wales’s Tattersalls Stakes, the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy Stakes and the Listed Edmondson Hall Solicitors Sir Henry Cecil Stakes. For those who enjoy the challenge of selecting the winner of big field competitive handicaps, the Each Way Extra at bet365 Handicap should prove an intriguing puzzle. We would like to thank the European Breeders Fund, The Kingdom of Bahrain, Tattersalls, bet365, Edmondson Hall Solicitors and John Deere for their generous sponsorship of this afternoon’s racing, as well as Moët & Chandon for sponsoring all three days of the July Festival. We also extend our thanks to Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, for their sponsorship of our Owners’ facility. We hope that many of you will enter our Style Awards, a celebration of the best dressed people on the racecourse. Our judges will be looking for originality and creativity, as well as attention to detail and an appreciation of current fashion trends. Everyone can enter and we greatly look forward to seeing the judges announce the victor in the Winner’s Enclosure at 4.20pm. The Moët & Chandon July Festival will be broadcast live on ITV and Racing TV, both of whom provide consistently excellent coverage. The Jockey Club’s website will feature an interactive ‘Raceday Live’ feed across all three days, featuring opinion polls, fun quizzes, live updates and video content to enhance your experience of the event. While restrictions continue, we all still have a role to play in preventing the spread of coronavirus. I therefore remind you of our customer code of conduct, the key points of which can be found on page 8, and I thank you for your understanding. I wish all the horses and their connections competing today the very best of luck and I wish you a wonderful afternoon here at the July Course. Best wishes, SOPHIE ABLE General ManagerWHAT’S ON SITE TODAY?

Some well-bred newcomers on show here but this can go to Ralph Beckett’s LOVELY MANA, who stepped up on her debut effort to finish eighth in a listed event over C&D 12 days ago, and with further improvement on the cards, can open her account back in maiden company. Princess Shabnam heads the dangers of those with previous racecourse experience, ahead of debutantes Lullaby Bay and Storm Dancer.

Although not as thrilling as the 2019 finish that saw a three-way photo, Tactical won this contest in good style, despite being short of room in-running to win by 1¼ lengths. A winner on his second start to land the Windsor Castle Stakes at Ascot, Tactical showed vast improvement from his debut on the Rowley Mile course and it was clear from the beginning this horse was going to be something special. He backed up that success to get the better of Yazaman again - at a fair price of 5/2 for Her Majesty The Queen..

Richard Hannon won this contest in 2014 and 2016 and his colt could play a key part in this race.

PLAY SMARTER

Three juvenile races at Royal Ascot are represented here, with PROJECT DANTE’s third-placed finish in the Norfolk appealing as the best form. The way he finished off that race strongly suggests 6f will bring about more so he gets the vote. Eldrickjones demands respect on his huge Coventry run, with Aleezdancer one to consider at longer odds.

A case can be made for several of these but much the most persuasive one is for Roger Varian’s BOOMSHALAA who has yet to take a backward step in his four runs and can gain compensation for his narrow Royal Ascot reverse before tackling pattern company. Popmaster also has better days ahead of him so is next on the list, with hat-trick seeking Akkeringa another who warrants plenty of respect.

THE TATTERSALLS PRINCESS OF WALES’S STAKES

CRYSTAL CAPELLA 2011 WINNER The Tattersalls Princess of Wales’s Stakes offers the first opportunity of the season for three year olds to take on their older counterparts over a mile and a half at Pattern race level. Having been staged as a Group Three contest from 1971, it was upgraded to Group Two status in 1978. Inaugurated in 1894, the race honours Princess Alexandra of Denmark who became Princess of Wales on her marriage to the future King Edward VII in 1862. Isinglass, the Triple Crown winner of the previous season, landed the first ever running and the contest’s reputation was quickly established with fellow Triple Crown heroes Flying Sand (1899) and Rock Sand (1984) also taking the honours. An early 20th Century winner of the utmost significance was Polymelus (1907), who would go on to become the champion sire on five occasions, with his son Phalaris having a huge impact on the development of the most successful bloodlines in racing all over the world. Indeed the Princess of Wales’s Stakes can boast a roll of honour which includes several horses that had a huge influence on the development of the thoroughbred, with Blandford (1922), Solario (1925) and Fairway (1929) all becoming successful stallions when sent to stud. A female winner in more recent times of great significance was Height Of Fashion in 1982. Owned and bred by The Queen, Height Of Fashion scored in course record time and following her retirement was sold to the late Hamdan Al Maktoum. As a broodmare she proved outstanding with her progeny including Nashwan, the winner of the 2000 Guineas, Derby, Coral-Eclipse and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1989. Her offspring also included four-time Group One winner Nayef and Unfuwain, who followed in his mother’s footsteps by winning the Princess of Wales’s Stakes in 1988. Lance Chest (1912 and 1913) became the first horse to win the race twice. Since then the feat has been repeated four times, by Primera (1959 and 1960), Lomond (1965 and 1966), Millenary (2002 and 2003) and most recently Big Orange (2015 and 2016), who went on to land the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2017. Lester Piggott is the most successful jockey of all time in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes with eight victories, while among the current generation of jockeys Ryan Moore leads the way with four. Moore’s four winners – Papal Bull (2007), Doctor Fremantle (2009), Crystal Capella (2011) and Fiorente (2012) - were all trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who has saddled the winner on a record nine occasions. Stoute was also successful with Shardari (1986), Rock Hopper (1991), Saddlers’ Hall (1992), Little Rock (2000) and Gamut (2005).

Having won a listed race over course and distance and a Group 2 over in France last season, Dame Malliot faced a stiff task here but took full advantage of the 3lb fillies’ allowance to beat the 2019 winner Communique at 8/1. Hollie Doyle was keen to hold onto this daughter of Champs Elysees and wanted plenty of cover early on in the race. However, she quickly improved to take the lead 7f out and exchanged blows all the way to the final furlong with Mark Johnston’s Communique. Ed Vaughan’s four-year-old proved too game in the end and stayed on the strongest of the two, to win comfortably by 2¼.

William Haggas is yet to win this contest but his favourite should take all the beating.

Dubai 2020 will be long remembered as the one of the most difficult years that our generation will have ever faced. Covid-19 has brought many challenges to everyday personal and business life. The Thoroughbred Racing Community across the globe have had to make many tough decisions to keep racing going albeit behind closed doors. As racecourses across the UK start to welcome a limited number of people back to their tracks, we would like to congratulate Sophie and her team at Newmarket Racecourse, The Home of British Racing, on their efforts and determination to bring back spectators. We know it isn’t the same as before but we look forward very much to returning to the track in numbers to enjoy the sport we all love. Good luck to all and stay safe. SIR HENRY CECIL

The sixth race on today’s card honours the memory of the late Sir Henry Cecil, a much-missed Newmarket resident and towering member of the racing community. Sir Henry passed away in June 2013 following an inspirational battle with cancer that coincided with the zenith of his life as a trainer, when he oversaw the remarkable career of the undefeated Frankel, arguably the greatest racehorse ever to have graced the turf. Frankel was his fabulous finale but Sir Henry’s legacy as a master trainer had already been secured thanks to his previous exploits in training household names like Oh So Sharp, Slip Anchor and Bosra Sham to name but three. In total, he plundered 25 British Classics, including nine here at Newmarket, with Frankel’s awesome display of power in the 2011 QIPCO 2000 Guineas surely the most memorable. Having trained out of Warren Place, Sir Henry was an iconic figure, synonymous with Newmarket’s world famous Warren Hill and the loss of his presence and wisdom continues to be felt in our town. Tony Rushmer, author of the recently published ‘The Triumph of Henry Cecil: The Authorised Biography’ and who spent seven years working for Sir Henry, recalls feeling in awe of the trainer during his time with him. “He was always someone I admired, long before the opportunity arose to venture inside Warren Place,” Rushmer recalls. “There was just this aura around him, even when things weren’t going so well. “When he trained his horses he would tend to walk away from the rest of us and you could see how focused he was as they came by. He’d be in the zone. And that would continue as we jumped back into the car when he’d be running through his mind what he’d just seen. The excitement was just bubbling through him – ‘The grey colt, he could be very good, couldn’t he? He has really settled down now, you know?’ I’d just sit there and listen and was fascinated by everything that unfolded on those mornings.” Newmarket Racecourses is proud to ensure Sir Henry Cecil’s legacy is remembered and will continue to ensure generations of racegoers to come know of his immense contribution to our sport.

Emergency Procedures

Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate. It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA. Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended. Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.

Health And Safety Notice

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.

If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.

Newmarket Racecourses Official Photographer

The official photographer is John Hoy. To see any of his images please visit www.hoycubedphotography.com. Racegoers are reminded that many racedays are given coverage on television, radio and in print, various other forms of media and for Newmarket Racecourses commercial use.
