Newmarket Racecard - July Festival Day 2

Page 1

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU Welcome to the Moët & Chandon July Festival It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the July Course for the Moët & Chandon July Festival. Today is a relaxed summer’s afternoon with the highest quality racing against a beautiful backdrop. We have seven races to enjoy, including Group 1 action in the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes, which looks set to be a vintage renewal and forms part of QIPCO British Champions Series. The Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes (sponsored by bet365) adds further high-level competition to the card, while two Heritage Handicaps in the form of the bet365 Handicap and bet365 Trophy provide intriguing puzzles to solve. We would like to thank Weatherbys, bet365 and Tattersalls for their generous sponsorship of this afternoon’s racing, as well as Moët & Chandon for sponsoring all three days of the July Festival. We also extend our thanks to Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, for their sponsorship of our Owners’ facility. The Moët & Chandon July Festival will be broadcast live on ITV and Racing TV, both of whom provide consistently excellent coverage. The Jockey Club’s website will feature an interactive ‘Raceday Live’ feed across all three days, featuring opinion polls, fun quizzes, live updates and video content to enhance your experience of the event. While restrictions continue, we all still have a role to play in preventing the spread of coronavirus. I therefore remind you of our customer code of conduct, the key points of which can be found on page 10, and I thank you for your understanding. I wish all the horses and their connections competing today the very best of luck and hope that you have a wonderful afternoon here at the July Course. Best wishes, SOPHIE ABLE General ManagerWHAT’S ON SITE TODAY?

The Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro British EBF Maiden Stakes

YOUTH SPIRIT (LEFT) AND NAVAL CROWN (RIGHT) LAST YEARS WINNER AND THIRD The Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro British EBF Maiden Stakes has launched the careers of several high-class performers over the last decade. The seven-furlong contest for colts and geldings, staged at the Newmarket July meeting, was won by subsequent dual Listed scorer True Story in 2013 – although the best horse in that year’s race turned out to be fifth-placed Postponed, a future four-time Group 1 winner who retired to Dalham Hall Stud having earned just shy of £5 million in prize-money. Lexington Times, successful in 2014, also went on to become a Listed winner and among the horses he beat that day were Latharnach, later a runner-up in the St James’s Palace Stakes, and Snoano, who three years later would land the Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot. All the first four home in 2015 became stakes performers. The winner, Manaafidh, ran second in the Solario Stakes; runner-up Muntazah collected a pair of Group 3s at Meydan; third-placed developed into a Group 3 scorer and ran placed in the Jebel Hatta and Cox Plate; and fourth-placed Dal Harraild won two Listed races and was Group 2-placed. Global Giant, who triumphed in the second division of the race in 2017, went on to win the Listed Carlingford Stakes at Dundalk for his original handler Ed Dunlop and owner Dr Johnny Hon and since his sale to be trained by John Gosden for Isa Salman Al Khalifa has added the Steventon Stakes and Magnolia Stakes to his CV. The 2018 renewal featured a host of familiar names. The winner, Al Hilalee, took the Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage on his very next start and landed the Prix Hocquart in the following season, while sixth-placed Allmankind has become a top jumper for Dan Skelton and won the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase, Kingmaker Novices’ Chase and Future Champion Novices’ Chase last season. Back in ninth that day was Nayef Road, who developed into an elite stayer and has finished placed in the Gold Cup, St Leger and Goodwood Cup. Last year’s winner Youth Spirit has upheld the honour of the race by taking the Chester Vase this season, while third-placed Naval Crown went on to win the Meydan Classic, run fourth in the 2,000 Guineas and finish runner-up in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. Godolphin hold an outstanding record in this race, with the renowned royal blue silks having been carried to victory by True Story and Al Hilalee as well as Dubai Hero in 2016 and Being There in 2017. Sheikh Mohammed’s operation also fielded the runners-up in 2011 (with Sports Section), 2012 (with Improvisation), 2014 (with Good Contact), 2016 (with D’Bai), 2017 (with Tribal Quest), 2018 (with Al Mureib), 2019 (with Al Suhail) and 2020 (with Magical Land). This year’s renewal, held on Friday July 9th, features another strong entry from Godolphin, comprising two beautifully bred colts who both finished third on debut for Charlie Appleby. Frankie Dettori takes the ride on Stormy Ocean, a Frankel colt out of As Good As Gold, a winning Oasis Dream half-sister to Group 2 winner Eminent (also by Frankel) who cost 480,000gns as a yearling, while James Doyle will partner Noble Truth, a Kingman colt out of Speralita, an unraced Frankel half-sister to brilliant middledistance filly Stacelita who was bought for €1.1 million as a yearling.

Shadwell also boast an impressive record in the race, having won it in 2012 (with Ghurair), 2015 (with Manaafidh) and 2019 (with Al Madhar). The late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s organisation is represented by two intriguing debutants in 2021. Richard Hannon, who trained Manaafidh and Al Madhar, unleashes Ehraz, a Showcasing colt out of Exrating, an unraced Exceed And Excel half-sister to classy sprinter Pearl Secret bought as a yearling for 180,000gns, while Sir Michael Stoute takes the wraps off Al Baahy, a Kingman colt out of Secret Keeper, a New Approach half-sister to Prix de Diane heroine Confidential Lady who cost 260,000gns as a yearling. John and Thady Gosden have declared two colts for the race, one with a useful piece of form to his name and the other a newcomer. Altraif ran fourth on debut over course and distance last month (one place behind Noble Truth). The relation to outstanding Oaks and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes heroine Taghrooda carries the silks of his breeder Prince Faisal, who also bred and raced both his sire Kodiac and damsire Olden Times. Debutant Velazquez, co-owned by his breeder Sir Robert Ogden with Sue Magnier, hails from the first crop of star sprinter Caravaggio and receives a stamina boost from his dam Pandora, a daughter of Galileo who finished third in the Musidora and Galtres Stakes. Andrew Balding, trainer of last year’s winner Youth Spirit, is represented 12 months later by a colt with a fascinating pedigree. Prince Of Rebels is by Estidhkaar, who landed the July Stakes at this meeting by four and a half lengths, and is a half-brother to dual Listed scorer Pogo, who was not far behind Palace Pier when fifth in the Queen Anne Stakes last time. The £40,000 yearling buy, owned by Michael Blencowe, is also related to recent Prince of Wales’s Stakes victress Love. Ed Dunlop, on the mark with Global Giant in 2017, is back this year with the Paul Turner-owned Alphonse Le Grande, a Sea The Stars colt out of Athasi Stakes winner Dolce Strega who cost only 40,000gns as a yearling – an apparent snip considering the identity of his sire and dam. At Liberty also looks well bought in light of his stellar pedigree, having cost 50,000gns as a yearling. Trained by Michael Bell for David Fish and partner, he is by Muhaarar, winner of the July Cup at this meeting six years ago, out of Federation, a Group 3-placed Motivator half-sister to the awesome Attraction. Rather more expensive was Baikal, a No Nay Never colt from the family of champions Fasliyev, Misty For Me and US Navy Flag who ran fourth on debut at Haydock for trainer Kevin Ryan and owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum. He was a 325,000gns yearling purchase. Tuscan, a newcomer trained by Charlie Hills for John and Jess Dance, was also a pricey acquisition. A firstcrop son of Churchill out of Orcia, a Listed-placed half-sister to stakes winners Distant Memories, Mohedian Lady and Mutatis Mutandis, he was bought at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale for 135,000gns. The John Butler-trained Solanna finished last on debut but is no back number on pedigree. The Helmet colt was bred by owner Ken Snell out of his useful Night Shift mare Night Lily, who won eight races and finished second in the Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes. Positive Impact, a Rabbah Bloodstock homebred, is a precious son of the late supersire Shamardal and is a half-brother to three winners out of Masarah, a Listed-placed daughter of Cape Cross. Father and son Simon and Ed Crisford oversee the newcomer’s career. There are plenty of promising pieces of form and prestigious pedigrees on show in the this year’s Weatherbys Bloodstock Pro British EBF Maiden Stakes, then, but the likely favourite will be Sweeping thanks to his close fourth to Point Lonsdale in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot on his last start. Trained by Archie Watson for his breeders, Ben and Sir Martyn Arbib, he is by Siyouni out of Sweeping Up, a Group 3-placed Sea The Stars half-sister to Zetland Stakes winner Under The Rainbow and Park Hill Stakes second Starfala.

PLAY SMARTER

SWEEPING has shown plenty of ability, building on his Leicester debut second when a fine fourth in the Chesham at Royal Ascot last month. There’s more to come from Archie Watson’s colt and he can put that experience to good use and come out on top. This is a strong-looking maiden though, with Noble Truth and Altraif heading the dangers. Ehraz is also a newcomer to note.

PETER THE GREAT is likely to develop into a Group performer, so he’s well worth a chance to defy an opening mark of 92 having easily landed a novice over C&D last time. Dubai Honour, who shaped particularly well in the Britannia at Royal Ascot last time, is another one to note, while King of Clubs is yet to reach his limit.

DANDALLA looked bright on debut when winning her maiden by two lengths at Newcastle. She handled the step-up into Group company excellently when bolting home to win the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. Nick Bradley had the first two home in last year’s renewal of this race, however, Karl Burke’s filly stayed on gamely to land the even-money odds by just a head over Fev Rover. Despite completing her hat-trick as a juvenile, she is winless since, albeit finishing fourth in this season’s Commonwealth Cup.

The unbeaten SANDRINE looks to have a brilliant chance of follwing up her listed success last time out.

Dubai 2020 will be long remembered as the one of the most difficult years that our generation will have ever faced. Covid-19 has brought many challenges to everyday personal and business life. The Thoroughbred Racing Community across the globe have had to make many tough decisions to keep racing going albeit behind closed doors. As racecourses across the UK start to welcome a limited number of people back to their tracks, we would like to congratulate Sophie and her team at Newmarket Racecourse, The Home of British Racing, on their efforts and determination to bring back spectators. We know it isn’t the same as before but we look forward very much to returning to the track in numbers to enjoy the sport we all love. Good luck to all and stay safe. Although not what the market predicted, NAZEEF took the step up in grade in her stride in a thrilling duel with Billesdon Brook and strong favourite Terebellum in last year’s renewal of this prestigious Group 1. From the starting stalls, Jim Crowley started steadily and this well-bred filly travelled sweetly through the early stages before making his move two furlongs out. She then lead moving into the final furlong and stayed on well in the famous blue and white silks to land this race by just a neck at 9/2. Prior to this fillies victory 12 months ago, she won her 5 previous races, including a victory in the Duke Of Cambride Stakes at Ascot.

Defeated by Indie Angel last time out in the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot, she was only beaten a length and a half behind Palace Pier in the Lockinge. With that form on offer, this mare is worth another chance.

the Falmouth Stakes was given Group One status in 2004.

During the period when confined to three year olds only, Happy Laughter (1953) and Waterloo (1972) both followed up on earlier success in the 1000 Guineas but the contest undoubtedly had improved status when the age restriction was lifted. Notable winners since the race became open to all ages in 1974 include Al Bahathri (1985), one of the early leading lights for the late Hamdan Al Maktoum. Also successful in the Irish 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, Hamdan Al Maktoum named the all-weather gallop Newmarket in her honour. Sonic Lady followed in Al Bahathri’s footsteps by taking the Irish 1000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes on her way to Falmouth Stakes success in 1986. She returned to successfully defend her crown in 1987 and become the first dual winner. The first Group One running of the race in 2004 saw Soviet Song prevail over 1000 Guineas winner Attraction. Soviet Song won again in 2005 to become the second and most recent dual winner. Owned by the Elite

Racing Club and trained by James Fanshawe, Soviet Song attempted the hat-trick in 2006 but could only manage sixth behind shock 50-1 winner Rajeem. Goldikova (2009) is without doubt the best ever winner of the Falmouth Stakes. Trained in France by Freddy Head for owner-breeders the Wertheimer Brothers, she won a remarkable 14 races at Group One level during her career, including the Breeders’ Cup Mile on a record three occasions. She had to work hard for her success at Newmarket, with Heaven Sent staying on to get within half a length of her at the finish. Heaven Sent was trained by Sir Michael Stoute who, alongside Alec Taylor Jr, is the winning-most trainer of all-time in the Falmouth Stakes with six victories - Royal Heroine (1983), Sonic Lady (1986 & 1987), Lovers Knot (1998), Integral (2014) and Veracious (2019). Lester Piggott won the race seven times, more than any other jockey in history. Of today’s current crop of riders Ryan Moore leads the way with three victories in the race – Integral (2014), Alice Springs (2016) and Roly Poly (2017).

PLAY SMARTER

The Coronation form looks key with SNOW LANTERN fancied to turn the tables on Alcohol Free and take her place at the top table with victory. Richard Hannon’s filly was making just her fourth start at Royal Ascot but took a huge step forward on her previous form and looked right at home at this level in splitting a pair of Group 1 winners in Alcohol Free and Mother Earth. She has more to come.

Plenty worth considering in a cracking sprint. Henry Candy’s TWILIGHT CALLS made a promising start to life in handicaps when second at Leicester and is fancied to go one better with this big field likely to suit his free-going style. Emergency Procedures

Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate. It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA. Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended. Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.

Health And Safety Notice

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.

If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.

Newmarket Racecourses Official Photographer

The official photographer is John Hoy. To see any of his images please visit www.hoycubedphotography.com. Racegoers are reminded that many racedays are given coverage on television, radio and in print, various other forms of media and for Newmarket Racecourses commercial use.
