Full flight... Full-blooded... Blue-blooded... Proud to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the first Darley July Cup back in 1996.

The race to be leading first-season sire: you need to get away sharply, and yet have the reserves to keep supplying winners as the season hots up. Profitable –himself at his best as a four-year-old–is already a front-runner. Quick Suzy gave him a Royal Ascot juvenile G2 winner at the first attempt. The only other son of Invincible Spirit ever to achieve that was leading sire Kingman–who hadn’t had nearly so many winners at this stage in the year. It’s a great start. And that’s indisputable.

THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU Welcome to the Moët & Chandon July Festival It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the July Course for the Moët & Chandon July Festival. Today is Darley July Cup day, the pinnacle of the July Course’s Flat season. We have seven races to enjoy, the highlight of which is the Group 1 Darley July Cup, one of the most valuable and prestigious sprint races in the world. First staged in 1876 and run over a distance of six furlongs, the Darley July Cup is an exhilarating spectacle and today’s renewal looks set to be thrilling. The race forms part of QIPCO British Champions Series and sits within the Sprint category. Earlier in the afternoon we have a fascinating Heritage Handicap to savour, in the form of the bet365 Bunbury Cup. Selecting the winner will be no easy task, but it is often the most difficult puzzles that are the most rewarding to solve. Run over the same distance of seven furlongs, but for two-year-old horses, the Group 2 bet365 Superlative Stakes offers another high-quality race to savour. We would like to thank Rossdales, Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa, bet365 and Darley for their generous sponsorship of this afternoon’s racing, as well as Moët & Chandon for sponsoring all three days of the July Festival. We also extend our thanks to Al Basti Equiworld Dubai, for their sponsorship of our Owners’ facility. The Moët & Chandon July Festival will be broadcast live on ITV and Racing TV, both of whom provide consistently excellent coverage. The Jockey Club’s website will feature an interactive ‘Raceday Live’ feed across all three days, featuring opinion polls, fun quizzes, live updates and video content to enhance your experience of the event. While restrictions continue, we all still have a role to play in preventing the spread of coronavirus. I therefore remind you of our customer code of conduct, the key points of which can be found on page 12, and I thank you for your understanding. I would like to wish all the horses and their connections competing today the very best of luck and I hope that you have a wonderful afternoon here at the July Course. Best wishes, SOPHIE ABLE General Manager

CALM SKIES showed plenty of ability when hitting the frame in a C&D maiden 2 weeks ago, just lacking the pace late on against a highly promising newcomer. That experience ought not to have been wasted on her and she can come out on top. Newcomer Ephrata demands a close look, whilst Ardbraccan and Eagle Path complete the shortlist.

Dubai 2020 will be long remembered as the one of the most difficult years that our generation will have ever faced. Covid-19 has brought many challenges to everyday personal and business life. The Thoroughbred Racing Community across the globe have had to make many tough decisions to keep racing going albeit behind closed doors. As racecourses across the UK start to welcome a limited number of people back to their tracks, we would like to congratulate Sophie and her team at Newmarket Racecourse, The Home of British Racing, on their efforts and determination to bring back spectators. We know it isn’t the same as before but we look forward very much to returning to the track in numbers to enjoy the sport we all love. Good luck to all and stay safe. PLAY SMARTER

ROYAL FLEET has created an excellent impression in winning both his starts to date and, with the latest of those working out well, an opening BHA mark of 93 could easily underestimate him, especially with further improvement on the cards. Kaheall is an interesting rival given he’s a similarly unexposed type from a top yard, while Qaader shouldn’t be taken lightly either.

The breed is changing. Dubawi, conceived 20 years ago. And now see his

trademark muscularity and head-down determination across the world’s racecourses. This year, he’s sired more Group winners and Stakes winners than any other European stallion. Way more. And his outstanding sire son, Night Of Thunder, might one day be even better. Dubawi sired 15% Stakes winners to first-crop runners; Night Of Thunder is on 18%. The Dubawi look – it’s here to stay.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF DARLEY SPONSORS This year we celebrate 25 years of sponsorship by Darley of the July Cup. Darley’s generous and longstanding support of the six-furlong summer highlight on the July Course at Newmarket has seen some outstanding performances including…. Anabaa (1996) – The first year of Darley’s sponsorship saw Anabaa take the honours. Owned by Ghislaine Head, trained by Criquette Head and ridden by Freddy Head, Anabaa’s success in the first Darley-sponsored July Cup was one of his two Group One successes in 1996. He was named the champion sprinter at the Cartier Racings Awards later in the year and as a stallion was responsible for the amazing 14-time Group One winner Goldikova. Agnes World (2000) – Agnes World created history in 2000 by becoming the first Japanese-trained horse to win a race in Britain. Partnered by ace jockey Yutaka Take, the Danzig horse justified 4-1 favouritism to score by a short-head from Lincoln Dancer. Oasis Dream (2003) – Winner of the Group One Middle Park Stakes on the Rowley Mile as a two year old, the Juddmonte homebred had a delayed start to his three year old career but showed he had developed into a sprinter of the very highest class when defeating Australian superstar and dual Royal Ascot winner Choisir in the 2003 Darley July Cup. Marchand d’Or (2008) – Marchand d’Or didn’t enjoy the clearest of runs when a fast-finishing fourth in the 2007 Darley July Cup. He made no mistake a year later when getting to defeat US Ranger by a head. They popular grey gelding, trained by Freddy Head, was a five-time Group One winner during his career.

S SHIP Starspangledbanner (2010) – A dual Group One winner in Australia, Starspangledbanner proved he has equally effective in Europe with victories in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and Darley July Cup during 2010. Dream Ahead (2011) – Dream Head’s success in 2011 was significant in that it was the first time a British Group One race was won outright by a female jockey as Hayley Turner cane home in front aboard the Khalifa Dasmal’s colt (Alex Greaves had previously dead-heated on Ya Malak in the 1997 Nunthorpe Stakes at York). Dream Ahead went on to land two further Group One contests in 2011 – the Haydock Sprint Cup and Prix de la Foret at Longchamp, where he defeated the great Goldikova. Slade Power (2014) – Owned by David and Sabena Power and trained by Edward a Lynam, Slade Power formed a great double act alongside his stable companion and five-furlong specialist Sole Power. Slade Power’s 2014 Darley July Cup success was his second at Group One level following his triumph in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot the previous month. Muhaarar (2015) – Initially thought of as a Classic contender, Muhaarar was unstoppable when campaigned over sprint distances. After beating the best of his own generation in the Group One Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, the late Hamdan Al Maktoum’s colt went to defeat all-aged opposition in the Darley July Cup, Prix Maurice de Gheest and QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes.

Oxted (2020) – A son of 2012 Darley July Cup hero Mayson, Oxted progressed through handicap company in 2019 to win the Group Three Abernant Stakes on the Rowley Mile on his first start of 2020 before following up in the Darley July Cup just over a month later. Successful in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, can he make history today by becoming the first dual July Cup winner for 62 years?

PLAY SMARTER

William Haggas’ AMETIST has gone unbeaten in four runs since his debut and looked to have a fair bit more in the locker when flying home to score over C&D last time. He can complete a five-timer at the chief expense of Britannia-hero Perotto, who also saddles a 6lb penalty. Stylish Chelmsford scorer Jumaira Bay enters calculations and Boardman rates a lively outsider too in a cracking handicap.

THE TATTERSALLS PRINCESS OF WALES’S STAKES

THE DARLEY JULY CUP The Darley July Cup is staged over six furlongs and is the highlight of the three-day Moët & Chandon July Festival on the July Course at Newmarket. First staged in 1876, it has always been a sprint of the very highest class and has held Group One status since the Pattern race system was established in 1971. It also forms part of the QIPCO British Champions Series. The first two runnings in 1876 and 1877 were both won by Springfield, who was bred by Queen Victoria and sold for 550 Guineas to J H Houldsworth. Houldsworth was a Scotsman who never bet and raced his horses for the pure pleasure of watching them run. Springfield was the first of eight dual winners of the July Cup, although you have go back over 60 years for the last of those – Right Boy in 1958 and 1959. The most successful horse ever in the July Cup is Sundridge, who recorded a hat-trick of wins in 1902, 1903 and 1904. In days gone by it was much more common for horses to run over a wide variety of distances. A perfect example of this was Ormonde, the Triple Crown winner (2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger) in 1886. Owned by the Duke of Westminster and trained by John Porter, Ormonde won all of his 16 starts, the last of which came when dropped down to six furlongs in the 1887 July Cup. Prominent winners in the early part 20th century included the great mare Diadem, successful in 1919 and 1920, and Tetratema (1921), who won the 2000 Guineas before becoming an outstanding sprinter and influential sire. For many, the outstanding British sprinter of the last century was the flying grey Abernant and he landed back-to-back victories in the July Cup in 1949 and 1950 under Gordon Richards. Vigo’s success in 1957 was the first of a record 10 July Cup triumphs for jockey Lester Piggott. The “Long Fellow” went on to score aboard Right Boy (1958, 1959), Tin Whistle (1960), Thatch (1973), Saritamer (1974), Solinus (1978), Thatching (1979), Moorestyle (1980) and Mr Brooks (1992). Among the current generation of jockeys, John Egan, Paul Hanagan, Adam Kirby and Ryan Moore are the most successful with two wins each while the contest remains the only domestic Group One contest in the calendar yet to be won by Frankie Dettori. The most successful trainers in the history of the July Cup are Charles Morton, Vincent O’Brien and Aidan O’Brien. Morton’s successes were in the early 20th century while Vincent O’Brien hit the target with Thatch (1973), Saritamer (1974), Solinus (1978), Thatching (1979) and Royal Academy (1990), who went on to enjoy a famous victory in the Breeders’ Cup Mile under Lester Piggott. Aidan O’Brien succeeded Vincent O’Brien at Ballydoyle Stables in County Tipperary and his five July Cup winners to date are Stravinsky (1999), Mozart (2001), Starspangledbanner (2010), U S Navy Flag (2018) and Ten Sovereigns (2019).

Bidding to complete his hat-trick, OXTED proved why he was Group 1 material when surging clear of the well-supported Sceptical to light up the July Course in style. Following in his fathers footsteps who won this contest in 2012, this sprinter was given a prominent ride by his young jockey and despite drifitng right inside the final furlong, he proved too game to land the Darley July Cup. Since landing this race last year, Roger Teal’s gelding has been held in high regard and landed the 5f King’s Stand Stakes last time out at Royal Ascot.

Dragon Symbol was unlucky to have his win overturned in the Commonwealth Cup and could be back for redemption here.

KEY CONTENDERS ROHAAN

Being kept very busy by David Evans, this 3-year-old has been an excellent recruit for his stable. A winner of the Wokingham Stakes Handicap at Royal Ascot, this horse deserves the step up to the highest ranks after looking very progressive.

HHHHH STARMAN

A winner of 4 of his five starts to date, this colt is clearly heading in the right direction. Despite a poor effort in Group 1 company in the Champions Sprint Stakes, he kept on well to to win the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes last time out.

HHHH DRAGON SYMBOL

The progressive sprinter Dragon Symbol posted a career-best when landing the Commonwealth Cup, before the result was harshly overturned by the stewards. Another effort like that would put this likeable 3-year-old bang in the mix again.

PLAY SMARTER

DRAGON SYMBOL, although demoted in the Commonwealth Cup, underlined his capabilites at this level, and there have been no signs of a chink in his armour yet, so he gets the marginal vote. Last season’s winner, Oxted, is another obvious danger, while both Starman and Rohaan have similar profiles to the selection in that they arrive firmly on the up, so they warrant a favourable mention, too.

Emergency Procedures

Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse. In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards. The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area. Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate. It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA. Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended. Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.

Health And Safety Notice

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse. We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.

If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.

Newmarket Racecourses Official Photographer

The official photographer is John Hoy. To see any of his images please visit www.hoycubedphotography.com. Racegoers are reminded that many racedays are given coverage on television, radio and in print, various other forms of media and for Newmarket Racecourses commercial use.
