It’s great to have racegoers back again and we’ve been lucky with the weather for our last two meetings so we’ll be keeping our ﬁngers ﬁrmly crossed that luck continues this evening and tomorrow afternoon. Our feature race this evening is the 6f ‘Wells Memorial Challenge Trophy’ at 7.30, run in memory of all members of the Wells family who have contributed greatly to the racecourse since its inauguration. Marginal preference is for the El Kabeir filly BETWEEN THE SHEETS, who has shown glimpses of promise in her two starts in testing conditions. The 45,000gns purchase is half-sister to Group 2 winner Miss Amulet and she gets the vote ahead of Whistledown, who took a big step forward to finish second at Lingfield just nine days ago. The Kodiac filly, Zwift, displayed encouraging signs on debut and may battle for minor money.

The handicapper has loosened his grip on EXALTED LEADER since March and the son of Acclamation is given a chance in the hope that further improvement will be seen now stepping up to 1m2f. The pick of Sim Card’s form was when finishing second at Yarmouth over this trip in similar conditions and the Michael Bell-trained three-year-old warrants respect off the same mark. Love Of Zoffany completes the shortlist now sitting on his last winning mark with Jonny Peate claiming a handy 3lb in the saddle.

Captain Vallo returned to action with a much-improved display at Hamilton, keeping on well for second. He has to be respected in this but MAYWAKE edges the vote. Richard Fahey’s gelding wasn’t particularly well fancied on his debut at Redcar, but he picked up really nicely late on to take second and could well build on that experience in this. Any support for William Haggas’ newcomer Monhammer is worth noting, while Improvised was slowly away on debut at Wolverhampton so could be better than that midfield effort.

FRANKLY MR SHANKLY has been knocking on the door of late and looks the one to beat here off a mark only 1lb higher than when second at Lingfield recently. He is preferred to course-and-distance winner Mukhayyam, who was a respectable third at Musselburgh last time and was a winner at that venue off this rating earlier in the season. Handicap debutant Too Big To Fail and Bath third Chinese Whisperer are others to consider.

MITROSONFIRE had been sniﬃng around at the business end in his early outings of 2021 and landed the victory he had been threatening at Pontefract recently. He won with a bit to spare there and, looking an improver with every run, could strike again under a 6lb penalty. Excel Power, who accounted for the selection (third) on his penultimate start, saw his three-race winning run come to an end in that aforementioned Pontefract event. That effort was too bad to be true and he could bounce back in first-time cheekpieces. It is diﬃcult to see Kraken Power coming between that duo and he may have to settle for a minor role.

Although Conservatoire and Mystery Show hold the pick of the form in the race, they seem to relish testing conditions underfoot, and it may be best to look elsewhere. Instead, preference is for BOLLIN MARGARET, who thrived when stepping back to this trip at Wetherby eight days ago. Although she has to give weight away to all of her rivals, she sits on an appealing mark and should give a good account with David Allan returning to the saddle.

MORTY was well supported on his handicap debut at Chelmsford last time and ran on well for second. David O’Meara’s charge gets another chance off the same mark here and could prove a tough nut to crack. Arnold was beaten less than a length at Wetherby two starts ago and was a solid second behind a runaway winner at Pontefract last time so could prove a danger to all in this, though perhaps top weight Cool Spirit, who won well at Musselburgh two starts ago, could prove a bigger threat to the selection.
