Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse as we kick off the Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival. Over the next nine days the Festival visits eight Yorkshire courses, highlighting the variety and quality of racing in the county. Many thanks to SkyBet for their continued support of the Summer Festival. Our thanks also to our other sponsors on this afternoon’s card for their support, Dobsons Gaskets, EBF, Titanium Racing and Happy Birthday to our final two race sponsors Steven Lightowler and Ian Manning. On what looks set to be a warm afternoon please remember that you can get water free of charge from any of our bars and if you are in need of sun lotion there is some available free of charge at the First Aid points in both the Paddock Enclosure and the Course Enclosure. We hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon with us and we hope to see you again soon. Many thanks and very best regards. JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director

LONGEST TRAVELLERS

BRASCA (4.30) trained by R Beckett, Kimpton Down, distance of 250 miles. FLASH BETTY (2.45) trained by M Channon, West Ilsley, distance of 213 miles. ACCACIA (2.45) trained by A Watson, Upper Lambourn, distance of 211 miles. HOLLOW STEEL (2.45) trained by Alice Haynes, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles. SUPER CUB (3.20) & JARAMILLO (5.40) trained by R Varian, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles. GOLDEN ROMANCE (3.20) & BRILLIANT LIGHT (4.30) trained by S bin Suroor, Newmarket, distance of 172 miles. NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 15th July.

TODAY’S TIPS RACE

1

An ordinary seller in which Bungley and Accacia have shown enough to be considered despite lacklustre most recent efforts. Rosie’s Return kept on willingly over 5f at Catterick first time out and also enters the equation over this extra furlong, but HOLLOW STEEL took a step forward in first-time cheekpieces (worn today) over this trip at Yarmouth last time and may just have enough about her to exploit this drop in grade.

WIN: HOLLOW STEEL

RACE

2

SO SMART ran better than the bare result may suggest first time out, before going close at Nottingham after a 12-week break when narrowly failing to fend off promising newcomer Chimgan. He remains on an upward trajectory and, with the Tom Dascombe yard thriving, he can make it third-time lucky. Neither Firebomb or Super Cub did anything wrong in finishing second last time and both rate obvious dangers, along with Golden Romance, who wasn’t disgraced in a hot conditions race at Windsor latest.

WIN: SO SMART

RACE

3

4 5

6 7

DANGER: TADREEB

An open race but there are grounds for giving one-time Derby entry JARAMILLO another chance. Roger Varian’s gelding hasn’t been seen to best effect in either handicap start since winning a Leicester novice event, but he has slipped to a mark of just 82 and first-time cheekpieces combined with a step up in trip could be the tonic to help get him back on track. Mukhayyam didn’t appear to handle Chester last time but won over C&D previously and remains of interest, as does Dubai Instinct, who narrowly failed to end a lengthy losing streak last time.

WIN: JARAMILLO

RACE

DANGER: ROSEABAD

FIRMAMENT was a winner from 9lb higher a year ago and though he’s largely laboured since then, he showed enough at Chester last time to suggest that he’s coming back to form. He handles easy ground and defying top-weight in this grade wouldn’t appear beyond him, though Tadreeb remains on the upgrade on the evidence of a fast-finishing second over 7f at Musselburgh last time. C&D winners Garden Oasis and Just Hiss are also respected.

WIN: FIRMAMENT

RACE

DANGER: BRIARDALE

Plenty of below par latest efforts on view here, though HARLEM SOUL’s average showing in testing conditions over a longer trip at Haydock could be excused. Prior to that he had looked a progressive sort when winning over this C&D with a strong galloping performance and his current mark looks more than workable. Stablemate Roseabad also warrants respect having finished runner-up off this mark at Goodwood last time, while Brasca was a winner when last tried over this trip and is rated just 2lb higher now.

WIN: HARLEM SOUL

RACE

DANGER: FIREBOMB

Hard to rule anything in or out of this, including Zookeeper, whose abject effort at Pontefract last time seemed too bad to be true. Briardale and DELPH CRESCENT were closely matched when clashing on quicker ground over C&D last month, but the latter has since reaffirmed his liking for easy ground by finishing second at Pontefract and looks to have more in favour now. It’s a while since Sameem put his best foot forward but his mark has now tumbled to an interesting level.

WIN: DELPH CRESCENT

RACE

DANGER: ROSIE’S RETURN

DANGER: MUKHAYYAM

A trappy finale which provides a chance for BURSCOUGH to make it seventh time lucky. He has finished third the last twice, including off this mark at Ayr last time, and proved adept on easier ground when a bridesmaid at Pontefract as a juvenile. Taylored ran poorly in a first-time hood at Beverley latest, but that has been dispensed with here and he rates a threat on a string of earlier runner-up efforts. Symbol of Hope is another who wouldn’t need to improve much to get involved.

WIN: BURSCOUGH

DANGER: TAYLORED

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

PLAY SMARTER

BUNGLEY showed some promise in her run at Redcar in May and she earned herself a mark of 66. She subsequently disappointed on her handicap debut at Haydock but she could bounce back in a lower grade here. Hollow Steel has been running creditably in maiden and novice company and she has to be respected. Rosie’s Return and Flash Be·y aren’t out of it either.

This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-yearolds. Maiden races provide a starGng point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first Gme of asking.

PLAY SMARTER

A wide open juvenile maiden and DANDY BAY shaped as though she’d improve when fourth at Thirsk last month. She should be able to build on that to go close here. Firebomb sets a decent standard on the form shown on his previous two runs and he looks to be the biggest danger. So Smart should also improve to play a part.

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap raGng which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure compeGGve racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

DELPH CRESCENT is a C&D winner who has been running creditably of late. He is below his last winning mark and should go close in an uncompetitive event. RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap raGng horses must have run at least three Gmes in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This raGng then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this parGcular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

Horse

This is a one-mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap raGng this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced raGng whilst a strong performance could see the raGng increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap raGng has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that parGcular band. However, all handicaps sGpulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespecGve of how low their raGng is. This is o•en described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

PLAY SMARTER

SYMBOL OF HOPE has been knocking on the door all year and his turn can’t be far away. He’s proven on turf and looks the one to beat here. Taylored could be forgiven his latest run at Beverley and he may bounce back. Burscough went very close at Ayr last time and he isn’t out of it either.
