Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse. It is fantastic to have the ITV4 cameras with us for our biggest day of the season, which features the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap. We are proud to be William Hill’s longest standing sponsorship, this being the 28th year and we are delighted with the high quality field not only for the William Hill Great St Wilfrid but also for the consolation race, the William Hill Silver Trophy. The William Hill Great St Wilfrid trophy has remained in Yorkshire for the last eleven years and with a very strong Yorkshire contingent again, including 2020 winner Staxton, there is a very strong possibility it will do so again. The season is fairly flying by and it is hard to believe that we have only four meetings remaining after today. We’re racing next Monday evening 23rd August as well as Bank Holiday Family Day on Monday 30th and we’re also in action the following day, Tuesday 31st. Our season finale is on Saturday 25th September. Wishing you a wonderful afternoon today and we hope to see you again at one of our upcoming fixtures. JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director

TODAY’S TIPS RACE

1

Exminster made a winning debut at Redcar last month, despite showing some inexperience early on, and he has to be respected under a penalty. The vote, however, goes to ALLEN KEY based on his encouraging debut fifth at Sandown. He will have benefited plenty from that experience, while Alpine Lady is no forlorn hope on the evidence of her debut fourth at Carlisle.

WIN: ALLEN KEY

RACE

2

DYNAMIC FORCE overcame greenness to run out an impressive winner on debut at Ayr last month and Robert Cowell’s colt is expected to step forward from that outing, with this longer trip no concern. Taj Alriyadh is unbeaten in two starts, both at Catterick, and he holds obvious claims, while newcomers To Everest and Streetsense Bertie have both clearly shown a fair amount at home to be considered for this.

WIN: DYNAMIC FORCE

RACE

3

4 5

6 7

DANGER: COPPER AND FIVE

Lasting Legacy certainly wasn’t stopping over 1m at Pontefract and she is unlikely to be inconvenienced by this step up in trip, while Ms Gandhi also demands respect following her pleasing comeback at Newmarket. However, MYRISTICA impressively won a similar C&D event just under two weeks ago and a 7lb hike in the ratings might not be enough to anchor her if arriving in the same mood.

WIN: MYRISTICA

RACE

DANGER: MR WAGYU

The William Haggas stable is in a rich vein of form at the moment and KETTLE HILL appeals as a gelding with a lot more to come off his mark. With another stride, he had the beating of the reopposing Garden Oasis at York and can gain revenge here with conditions to suit. Copper And Five must also enter calculations after a taking C&D success last month, while Rains Of Castamere is another in-form player to note.

WIN: KETTLE HILL

RACE

DANGER: VENTURA EXPRESS

MUSIC SOCIETY may be one of the most unlucky horses around this season, narrowly defeated at Hamilton and York and a slightly unlucky fourth at Goodwood when caught on a wing behind the reopposing Mr Wagyu. With form behind the Steward’s Cup winner Commanche Falls, Tim Easterby’s gelding can deservedly get his head in front. Epsom Dash winner Mokaatil makes the shortlist along with Intrinsic Bond, the evergreen Mr Lupton, Lampang and last year’s winner Staxton.

WIN: MUSIC SOCIETY

RACE

DANGER: TAJ ALRIYADH

COOPERATION was disappointing on his latest outing at Doncaster after being restless in the stalls and ultimately playing catch up after a slow start. That said, a return to the form of his C&D victory the time before would give the son of Mehmas a definite chance. Ventura Express ran on well to finish third at York and he is of interest along with Ghathanfar, who has been running consistently well, and Citron Major.

WIN: COOPERATION

RACE

DANGER: EXMINSTER

DANGER: LASTING LEGACY

ASCOT DAY is in fine form and rates the safest bet. The seven-year-old went up 4lb for his Epsom success before making a bold bid for a 1m4f double when only finding one too good at Chepstow last month, and may have a little less on his plate today. Act Of Magic continues to run well in defeat and another bold bid could be on the cards, while Sudona is slipping back down to a workable mark.

WIN: TWO BROTHERS

DANGER: GEORGE BANCROFT

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

PLAY SMARTER

EXMINSTER was strong in the betting and impressed in making a winning debut in a Redcar novice (7f) 4 weeks ago, despite running green when hitting the front. There’s undoubtedly more to come and he can concede weight all round and make it 2-2. Allen Key and Mister Camacho, who was behind the selection last time, head up the dangers.

PLAY SMARTER

Those drawn high have ruled the roost in this race in recent years and TRUE BLUE MOON, who will emerge from stall 16, is worth chancing. Tim Easterby’s charge is now 1lb lower than for his Hamilton success in May and shaped pretty well at Haydock recently. Ghathanfar has been a model of consistency this year and is set for another bold show, while Citron Major and Danzan are others to consider.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Today’s feature race is a six furlongs handicap for three-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from with a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Despite having no rating restrictions attached to it, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tend to make open handicaps very competitive races.

Tim Easterby typically holds a strong hand and it may pay to side with last year’s winner STAXTON to emerge victorious again. Horse

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130. lb

Horse

This is a one mile, one furlong and 170 yards handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 80 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 75.

PLAY SMARTER

A competitive handicap despite the small-field, with the narrow vote in favour of MS GANDHI. She produced her best effort to date when runner-up on return/handicap debut at Newmarket (10f) 2 weeks ago, that despite lacking a bit of experience in a muddling affair. She can come out on top, with Myristica and Lasting Legacy heading up the dangers.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Today’s finale is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
