WELCOME TO SALISBURY RACECOURSE We are so pleased to welcome you to Salisbury today. The last time we staged this particular late-July fixture was in 2019 when we had a Wham! tribute band playing after racing. Some of you here tonight may even have been with us?! It has been very good to have spectators back since the end of May, enjoying the racing. Our attendances have been modest but we wanted to make sure we kept the numbers down whilst the greater restrictions were in place. There will be a few more of you here tonight than we have had for a long time but still far fewer than what many us will remember. That will take a bit of time and rightly so. We are planning a Ladies’ Evening on Friday 20th August with some music afterwards, so look out for more on that imminently via our social media channels and on the racecourse website salisburyracecourse.co.uk A big thank you to all our sponsors tonight, and in fact to all of you for supporting your local racecourse. The Salisbury directors and staff hope that you have a great evening. Best wishes, Jeremy Martin Executive Director & Clerk of the Course

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims ‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance. OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
TODAY’S TIPS DID YOU KNOW: Sir Mark Prescott has a near one-in-three strike-rate here in the last five years, and Morgan Cole has won twice and finished second twice in five rides for the handler this year. All that makes Gensius most appealing in the 8.35. RACE ONE AVANZATA put in a career best when finishing second on her handicap debut over 7f at Wolverhampton and that form gives the Heather Main-trained daughter of Al Kazeem a big chance this evening. Grandstand merits consideration having hit the crossbar at Chepstow last week, while Pedestal and Lion Hunter are others who should be noted in a wide-open contest. WIN: AVANZATA DANGER: GRANDSTAND RACE TWO Spreadsheet has to be respected having returned to winning ways over 6f at Brighton recently, but a 4lb rise will make his life tougher. With that in mind, preference is for HAVEONEYERSELF, who was a recent winner at Lingfield and the six-year-old is capable of backing that performance up. Others to consider include Kingston Star, as she makes her debut in handicap company, and First Verse. WIN: HAVEONEYERSELF DANGER: SPREADSHEET RACE THREE AMERICAN STAR confirmed the promise he displayed on debut at Newbury when chasing home an exciting prospect at the same track earlier this month. Ed Walker’s colt should still have more improvement left to come and appears the one to beat. Zoltan Star struggled in the Super Sprint last weekend but is capable of making the frame in a race of this nature. Withering is another with valid form claims, while Bella Caelia is arguably the pick of the newcomers. WIN: AMERICAN STAR DANGER: ZOLTAN STAR RACE FOUR Despite carrying a penalty, this might be NINE TALES’ race for the taking having shown a gritty attitude at Haydock last week to break the maiden. Before that, he shaped well behind the Listed-placed Bullace at Kempton. Clive Cox loves a winner at this track and his newcomer Prop Forward is respected, as is Bluebird Day, who improved from her first to her second start when runner-up here. WIN: NINE TALES DANGER: BLUEBIRD DAY RACE FIVE Extremely unlucky in running last week at Newmarket, THEOTHERSIDE is a confident selection to go one better off a mark 4lb lower then her last victory, which came at this time last year. The consistent Aramis Grey must make the shortlist having finished in the first two on each of her last five starts. Bella Notte is also respected on her first competitive appearance since October. WIN: THEOTHERSIDE DANGER: ARAMIS GREY RACE SIX INVINCIBLE SOLDIER caught the eye when putting in a career best to finish second over a mile at Leicester eight days ago. That performance suggests that he should be suited by this step up in trip and a 1lb rise in the ratings appears to be fair. Sisterandbrother also hit the crossbar on his most recent outing and he is likely to pose the biggest threat to the selection. The rest look to be up against it but Monsieur Fantaisie is arguably the pick of them. WIN: INVINCIBLE SOLDIER DANGER: SISTERANDBROTHER RACE SEVEN Promises looked to have a race in her when third at Wolverhampton in September and could be interesting on her first start for Suzi Best. She does have a long break to overcome and preference is for FIRE EYES, who was only beaten a neck at Musselburgh when running on over a mile after meeting trouble in running. Touchet Beret pulled too hard on her debut at Goodwood and will do a lot better when she learns to settle. WIN: FIRE EYES DANGER: PROMISES toteplacepot suggestions: (1) 2 & 5 (2) 1 & 5 (3) 1 & 7 (4) 1 & 8 (5) 1 & 3 (6) 1 & 3

PAMELA BOYES BRUFORD (5th October 1936 - 8th July 2016) Pamela was born in Brazil and lived in Sao Paulo with her parents until she was 8. They then moved to Devon, where she was educated locally. As a young woman, Pam moved to the Salisbury area. Later in life, she met Graham Fitch in 1985, and they stayed partners until her sudden and sad passing in July 2016. Attending the races at Salisbury was something that they greatly enjoyed doing together and Graham is very pleased to be able to pay tribute to Pam in this way.

H S Lester, front right, with his father and four brothers, all of whom were bookmakers.
Think Peaky Blinders, but based in London and, as far we know, without the violence. H S Lester began his involvement in bookmaking in the 1890’s, when as a 16-year-old he worked for his father William as a bookmaker’s runner on the street corners of the East-end of London. He quickly progressed to making his own books and by 1905, had made enough money to move to Leighton Buzzard with his extended family. His house “Sunloch” in Banbury was paid for with the profits of betting on the eponymously named winner of the 1914 Grand National. H S started to own horses in 1931, and formed a profitable association with the trainer George Todd, whom he helped buy the stables, Manton. Both H S and Todd believed that that there was no point in owning racehorses unless money could be made from betting. They had some success and H S won over 100 races including the Brighton Cup, the Chester Cup, and the Queen Elizabeth Cup at Lingfield. In his non-racing life, he was awarded an OBE for his contribution to the first world war and was Mayor of Banbury twice in the early part of the second world war. Following his death, his four surviving sons founded the H S Lester Memorial Handicap to be run at Salisbury, one of his and George Todd’s favourite courses. 2021 is the 49th running of the race. We hope that you have a great day at this beautiful course.
