THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU

Welcome to Sandown Park for Coral-Eclipse Day, the second day of our Coral Summer Festival. The feature race today is the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse, one of the highlights of the flat turf season and a race that has historically been the first time in a season when the three-year-old ‘Classic generation’ take on their older rivals. The race is named after Eclipse, an undefeated winner of 18 races during the 18th century. More recent winners of the race have included Giant’s Causeway (2000), Sea The Stars (2009), Golden Horn (2015) and Enable (2019). Last year, Enable was defeated by Ghaiyyath in a superb renewal of the race, which earned the Coral-Eclipse the distinction of being named sixth in the worldwide Longines Top Ten Group 1's of 2020. Having sponsored the Coral-Eclipse since 1976, the partnership is recognised as one of the longest-running continuous and current sponsorships of a British race. Sandown Park and The Jockey Club would like to thank Coral for their significant support of this prestigious race. The Coral-Eclipse is in the Middle Distance category of the QIPCO British Champions Series, which is now in its tenth year. The second race on the card is the Group 3 Coral Charge over the minimum distance of five furlongs, a sprint which takes place on the straight in the centre of the course. We also have Listed action in the form of the Coral Distaff, a race for three-year-old fillies over a distance of one mile. While we all remain hopeful that restrictions will ease soon, we still have a collective role to play in controlling the spread of coronavirus and I therefore remind you of our customer Code of Conduct, the main points of which can be found on page 8. I hope that you have a wonderful afternoon here at Sandown Park and look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

PLAY SMARTER

SAAHEQ bounced back to form to win a C&D handicap in cosy fashion 3 weeks ago, always travelling strongly before being produced to lead in the final 50 yards. He had Phoenix Star in behind on that occasion and a 3lb rise underestimates the authority of that win, so he is taken to follow up from a good draw. Mokaatil has to be feared following his win in the “Dash”, while Spoof is also respected.

CAME FROM THE DARK was unlucky not to reel in Lazuli in the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket 9 weeks ago and Ed Walker’s progressive 5-y-o is taken to make amends. Lazuli is an obvious threat again, while Arecibo and Keep Busy have both finished second in a Group 1, the former in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.

ECLIPSE

Today’s feature contest, the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse, commemorates one of the most influential horses of all-time – Eclipse. Bred by the Duke of Cumberland, a son of King George II, Eclipse acquired his name by being born during the great solar eclipse of 1764. There is no record of his birthplace, but it is most likely to have been at the Duke’s stud in Windsor. Sadly the Duke died in 1765 and at the dispersal sale of his bloodstock interests, Eclipse was sold to sheep dealer William Wildman for 75 Guineas (a Guinea is equivalent to £1.05 today). A highly-strung chestnut colt with a white blaze and one white sock, Eclipse was allowed to develop by Wildman and he did not step on to a racecourse until he was five years old. He made his debut at Epsom Downs on May 3rd 1769, winning a Plate valued at £50 after winning each of the four-mile heats by a distance. It was on this day that noted gambler Dennis O’Kelly is reported to have said “Eclipse first, the rest nowhere” when placing a bet. O’Kelly subsequently bought a half-share in Eclipse for 650 Guineas. Eclipse would win all of his nine races in 1769, although his dominance was scaring off the competition and three of his successes were walk-overs! In 1770 O’Kelly bought out Wildman’s remaining half-share for 1,100 Guineas and Eclipse was utterly dominant throughout the year, with victories at venues that remain familiar to this day, such as Newmarket and York and some which have since closed, like Guildford and Lincoln. By the end of 1770, Eclipse had won another nine races. Having seen off all competition and with nothing left to prove, he was retired having won all of his 18 starts. Eclipse stood as a stallion from 1771, based initially in Epsom before moving to Edgware, Middlesex. He sired 344 winners including Derby winners Young Eclipse, Saltram, Volunteer, and Sergeant. The most significant of his offspring was Potatoooooooos, one of the best racehorses of the 18th century and an extremely influential sire. A fourth generation offspring of foundation sire the Darley Arabian, Eclipse played a pivotal role in the development of the modern thoroughbred racehorse – so much so that 95 per cent of racehorses today have lineage directly back to him. Eclipse died on February 26th 1789. Although not especially attractive in terms of his looks, an examination of Eclipse’s body after his death revealed he had an abnormally large heart. His skeleton was preserved and is housed at the Royal Veterinary College in London, while the great horse was also the subject of several paintings by outstanding artist George Stubbs.

THE CORALECLIPSE

TH ROUGHOUT TH E DECADES T h is ye a r se e s th e 1 2 5th r u n n in g of to d ay ’s fe atu re co nte s t , the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse. Part of the British Champions Series , the mile and a quar ter highlight boasts some outstanding winners over the years . Isinglass (1894) – The sixth winner of the Triple Crown (2000 Guineas, Derby & St Leger) in 1893, Isinglass won 11 of his 12 races. His Eclipse victory as a four-year-old saw him overcome 1894 Derby winner Ladas by a length in a thrilling finish. Flying Fox (1899) – It took all the skill of legendary trainer John Porter to bring out the best in Flying Fox but the colt was unbeatable in 1899, winning the Triple Crown and Eclipse. The successful owner, the 1st Duke of Westminster, donated his winning prize money from Sandown Park to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton. Diamond Jubilee (1900) – Owned and bred by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, Diamond Jubilee was so-named as he was foaled

in the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. A very difficult horse to handle, he came into his own when partnered by 19-year-old Herbert Jones in 1900. As well as winning the Triple Crown, he was outstanding when landing the Eclipse in course-record time. Blue Peter (1939) – Winner of the 2000 Guineas and Derby, the outbreak of World War II prevented Blue Peter attempting the Triple Crown. The Eclipse was his fourth and final win from as many starts in 1939. His owner-breeder Lord Rosebery commented: “He was the best horse I ever had and was the best I had ever seen and he had only half a career as a racehorse." Tulyar (1952) – The Aga Khan’s Tulyar was unbeatable throughout 1952 with the Eclipse Stakes among his six victories ,which also included The Derby, St Leger and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. At the end of the year he had accrued prize money of £76,577 – a record for a British-trained racehorse at the time.

Dancing Brave

Royal Palace (1968) – Royal Palace’s victory in 1968 was probably the most thrilling finish ever seen in the Eclipse Stakes as he got up in the final strides to defeat Taj Dewan by a short-head with outstanding 1968 Derby winner Sir Ivor close up in third. Mill Reef (1971) – After going down to Brigadier Gerard in the 2000 Guineas, the outstanding Mill Reef was never beaten again. The summer of 1971 saw him land The Derby, Eclipse, King George Vi & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, before his autumn victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He remains the only horse to win all four races in the same year. Brigadier Gerard (1972) – The best British racehorse of the 20th century, Brigadier Gerard won 17 of his 18 starts. He was not at home on the soft ground for his victory in the 1972 Eclipse, but outstanding courage was one of his many attributes and he dug deep to deny Gold Rod by a length. Sadler’s Wells (1984) – A thoroughly tough and honest performer, the 1984 Eclipse was one of three Group 1 successes for Sadler’s Wells. The final of Vincent O’Brien’s five Eclipse winners, Sadler’s Wells went on to even greater heights as a stallion, being crowned the leading sire in Britain and Ireland a record 14 times. Pebbles (1985) – Although winner of the 1000 Guineas as a three year old in 1984, Pebbles took her form to another level the following year. Her facile Eclipse victory over Rainbow Quest, the first ever for a filly, preceded an equally imperious display in the Champion Stakes before she created history by becoming the first British-trained winner at the Breeders’ Cup in the USA.

Dancing Brave (1986) – Victorious in the 2000 Guineas before an arguably unlucky second in The Derby, Dancing Brave got back on track with a stunning Eclipse success in a season that saw him go on to take the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Nashwan (1989) – The summer of 1989 was all about Nashwan. After taking the 2000 Guineas and Derby, he was unstoppable in the Eclipse as he came home five lengths in front.

Nashwan

Giant’s Causeway (2000) – Nicknamed “The Iron Horse” and the first of Aidan O’Brien five Eclipse winners to date, Giant’s Causeway’s Eclipse victory was the second in a streak of five straight Group 1 victories. With regular jockey Michael Kinane injured, George Duffield was in the saddle and enjoyed his biggest career victory, aged 53.

Giant's Causeway

Sea The Stars (2009) – Successful in the 2000 Guineas and The Derby, Sea The Stars followed up in the Eclipse before going on to win the Juddmonte International, Irish Champion Stakes and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He swept the board at the 2009 Cartier Racing Awards.

Enable

Enable (2019) – Enable had already won seven Group 1 races before lining up in the 2019 Eclipse, including the 2017 Oaks as well as as the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in both 2017 and 2018. Her Eclipse success was significant as it was her sole Group 1 victory at 10 furlongs.

PLAY SMARTER

Only four runners but still a fascinating Eclipse. MISHRIFF showed himself to be a top-class colt when scoring cosily in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic in March and he can cement his placing among Europe’s best middle-distance performers by ending the winning run of Aidan O’Brien’s Prix du Jockey Club hero St Mark’s Basilica. Addeybb shouldn’t be underestimated and he can also have a say.

RUN TO FREEDOM shaped well on his handicap debut after six months off over course and distance last month where he was a little keen in the early stages and probably got to the front too soon.
