Race Description:
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Cliff Stud, whose generous support has enabled the feature race –The Cliff Stud Thirsk Hunt Cup – to be staged for a record £50,000, sponsors today’s race programme.
Located on the hills above the picturesque North Yorkshire market town of Helmsley, Cliff Stud (formally Helmsley Stud) was founded shortly before WW2 by Mr William Thorpe and subsequently taken over by the legendary trainer Sir Noel Murless, in 1948.
The 1960 Epsom Derby winner St.Paddy, who also won the St.Leger, was bred there and is remembered at the stud by a historical plaque.
In 1982 another training legend, and son-in-law of Murless, Sir Henry Cecil assumed control over the stud. Sir Henry, who passed-away in 2013, was Champion Trainer 10 times, training an incredible 25 domestic Classic winners and was known to love his time spent at Cliff Stud.
In 2017 Yorkshire businessman Paul Sutherland acquired Cliff Stud and former professional flat jockey Michael Wood and his wife Liz now expertly manage the stud on his behalf.
These days the 220-acres of beautifully maintained paddocks and exceptional equine facilities provide a wonderful, tranquil environment in which to raise and rest up to 65 racehorses.
For further information please visit: www.cliffstud.com
In addition to the superb equestrian facilities, the stud has two beautifully appointed holiday cottages; Cecil Cottage so named in honour of Sir Henry, and Frankel Cottage commemorating that most famous of racehorses which defined the final chapter in Cecil’s astonishing training career. Moreover, this spring three new stunning holiday lodges have also been launched, Helmsley Lodges.
It is now 162-years since the inaugural running of the The Hunt Cup at Thirsk in 1859, when it was a hurdle race of about 1½ miles and won by Sir Charles Slingsby’s horse EGG SAUCE. The race was worth £30, the modern day equivalent of which is a little under £4,000. Nowadays the race is a fiercely competitive Flat handicap contested over the distance of 1-mile and in 2021, thanks to race-sponsor Cliff Stud, the contest is worth a record £50,000.
The standout winner of the past decade has to be the Godolphin-owned horse FARHH. Trained by Saeed Bin Suroor, FARHH won the Thirsk Hunt Cup in 2012 and went on to record two career victories at Group 1 level, including the 2013 Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot. FARHH won circa £1.3m in his racing career and would have undoubtabley added to his Group-1 tally, but for the fact that he kept bumping into a young upstart called FRANKEL! These days FARHH stands at Dalham Hall Stud where, to date, he is the sire of the winners of 127-races.
Interestingly, two of the last three scheduled Hunt Cup races have not happened at Thirsk. In 2018 the race was transferred to Wetherby, as a result of a logistical clash with an ill-thought Tour de Yorkshire cycle race routed directly through the town on what should have been Thirsk Hunt Cup Day!
Then in 2020 the meeting was cancelled when it fell under the blanket suspension of racing, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The last running of the race, therefore - which was also the first sponsored by today’s sponsor Cliff Stud - was on Saturday 4th May 2019; this being won by HAYADH, trained and owned by Rebecca Bastiman. Very sadly Rebecca died in March this year, at just 40-years of age.
HAYADH lines up to contest the race again today and no doubt, as the runners head out on to the track for the 2021 renewal of the £50,000 Cliff Stud Thirsk Hunt Cup, we will all be remembering Rebecca and wishing the Bastiman family well.
