THE TIMEFORM VIEW MADAME LUNA should have more to come on the back of her Fakenham debut success in November and can make it 2-2, although market confidence behind Dan Skelton newcomer La Belle Argentee would make her a possible big threat. Rose’s Dart showed enough on the first of her 2 outings in bumpers to think she could also make her presence felt in a race like this now hurdling.

HORSE WELFARE
y rse ted
at Wetherby Racecourse we are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. At every meeting we have three specially qualified Equine Vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action There is also a British Horseracing Authority Veterinary Officer in attendance. During the race, three vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend to a horse in the same response time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating the injured jockeys. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected round the horse It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.
Racing grooms work very hard looking after the horses in their care to ensure they come to the races looking immaculate. As a reward for their efforts, a cash prize is presented to the groom who is judged to have produced the 'Best Turned Out' horse in every race.
Condition & Coat - Racehorses are athletes and the way their coat looks and the way it moves easily over their muscles reflects the horses overall condition. The coat should look smooth, clean and have a glossy shine, but pay attention to Greys and lighter coloured Chestnuts, as they won't carry such a sheen to their coats, which is not for want of trying, they just have the equine equivalent of mousey hair and remember that Greys often require much more work and effort to get clean. Quarter marks are the patterns put onto the coat on the horse's hindquarters or shoulder. They are made using a damp brush, wiped against the natural lie of the coat. Much like brushing velvet the wrong way.
To Plait or not to Plait - to win Best Turned Out a horse does not have to be plaited. Some horses do not like having their heads touched and get over-excited when being plaited as it indicates they could be off to the races. If a horse is not plaited it should not go against them, providing their loose mane is short, tangle-free and even, and lying on the right hand side of the horse's neck. Plaits should be small, neat and uniform with an odd number of plaits along the neck and one at the front.
Tails you win! - Doubtless at some point you will have heard that you should not stand behind a horse! For racing grooms the trust they build with their horses means you may see some in the Parade Ring with a plaited tail. If tails are loose they must be tangle-free, not too long, and there should be no wisps of bedding or hay in the tail.
No foot no Horse - Horse's legs, particularly white markings, known as socks or stockings, must be clean. Sometimes chalk is used to brighten these marks. Feet should be well shod and hooves oiled.
Best Dressed - All items of clothing (tack) the horse wears should be in good condition and clean.

Gibberwell and Time Was can do battle for minor honours.
