School of Business & Management
Here. Emmanuel’s campus is buzzing with the exchange of ideas. The School of Business & Management welcomes top executives to campus to share their expertise on entrepreneurship and industry trends, including how Chobani employs economic and marketing theories to develop their strategic vision, how Faber Castell reimagines “creativity” as an employable skill or how Dunkin’ uses social media to break down barriers of the brand experience. Students begin to chart their professional interests through in-depth research projects alongside faculty or to receive Distinction in the Field of Study upon graduation. Students present on female representation within private equity, sustainable business initiatives and their effects on financial performance, behavioral economics and effective public policy for the U.S. opioid crisis, housing market conditions impact on homeless families vs. homeless individuals, and the substitution and augmentation of human labor with intelligent automation.
There. Everywhere. With all of the opportunities in Boston, do you really need to study abroad? The reality is, the continued globalization of the world economy is presenting companies with new markets to infiltrate every day, and you are almost guaranteed to collaborate with partners and customers worldwide. The ability to work and communicate cross-culturally is significant. Emmanuel students gain insight and experience at leaders in global business, such as London, Berlin, Dublin, Shanghai, Paris, Bangkok, Barcelona, Rome and others.

MAJOR: Economics, concentration in Economic Policy
In Emmanuel’s “History of Economic Thought,” Erin learned about communism through reading others’ books and articles. During her semester abroad in a recently post-communist state, she was able to see firsthand how an economic system can shape society’s behavior, innovation and culture. In fall 2019, Erin studied at the University of Economics in Prague, Czech Republic, through the Central and East European Studies program. She took courses in international relations, globalization and world politics and the Czech language, as well as an internship for elective credit.
“Economics is the study of how we make decisions about limited resources. All over the world, people are making different choices about different resources and getting different outcomes. Studying abroad has allowed me to think about problems in a new way and realize my options are far less limited than I thought.”
She interned at the Consortium of Migrants Assisting Organizations, a collective of 18 NGOs working to solve problems related to migrants and refugees in Czech Republic. As the EU and International Political Analysis Intern, she consolidated news on migration policy and events, such as the impact of climate change on small island states, implications of Brexit and more, for a weekly newsletter. She also drafted papers for the organization’s website, which is used to inform the general public and provide contextual knowledge for policymakers shaping migration laws in the country.

INTERNET MARKETING From banners at the top of web pages and Instagram posts to e-mails and promotional notifications when passing by a certain retailer, we are bombarded by advertisements every day. Sometimes the ads are for the same pair of boots you were considering two weeks ago—and that’s not a coincidence. In a time when marketers and consumers are equally savvy, learn more about how companies use keywords, location intelligence and other analytics to plan, target and create interactive marketing tools designed to reach the right audience with the right message at the right time.

SPORT LAW How much should NCAA schools compensate student-athletes in the form of scholarships? Do sports video games and fantasy leagues overstep trademark or rights of publicity law? It’s no secret that there is big money in sports. The sports market (which includes ticket sales, sponsorships, media rights and merchandising) in North America alone is worth an estimated $73 billion (Statista, November 2019). Given the competitive nature of the industry and lucrative deals around multi-million-dollar payrolls, lawsuits are inevitable. This course offers a review of legislation and cases relating to professional and amateur athletics and athletes, sports events, sports merchandising, contracts, broadcasting and sponsorships.
Economics Education O N A Global Scale
As her research in economics education has focused on innovation in the classroom and finding ways to help students apply economic theories to real-world situations, students are vital in every aspect to Associate Professor of Economics Rebecca Moryl’s work. After creating the website audioecon, a curated library of podcasts to enhance economics instruction, Dr. Moryl and one of her student research assistants investigated the utilization of learnergenerated podcasts as means to teach economics. Her award-winning “Podlearning” technique was published in the Journal of Economic Education in 2015, and continues to serve as a tool for her “Intro to Microeconomics” students. Above: Dr. Moryl and Katie Thompson ’20 are working together this academic year to research government and economic policies that hinder or benefit communal lending cooperatives, particularly in the fast-growing economies of sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Moryl and her student researchers have also collaborated on topics related to consumer decisions on mortgages and personal finance, as well as local economic development across Massachusetts. She has even taken her pedagogical research on applied economics across the globe— with a 2016 Whiting fellowship to South Africa and a 2018-19 Fulbright fellowship to Rwanda— returning with new teaching and learning techniques and new research interests in which students can get involved. In working with Dr. Moryl, students also get a crash course in reviewing economic data and literature, compiling research summaries and drafting papers for academic journals. In 2019, Dr. Moryl and Jannet Desvira ’19, along with Emmanuel professor Dr. Florencia Gabriele co-authored an article, “HeadsUp! Econ: Making exam review sessions fun and effective” in the Journal of Economics Education.

Robert’s interest in the workings of the wider world grew in 2011 as the Arab Spring became international news. “I love history,” he said, “so knowing the history of the states as well as their current affairs made their actions and interactions much more interesting to me.” When he came to Emmanuel and took his first economics course, it gave him a new lens through which to view international relations, and he knew the two disciplines would carve out his ideal career path in the business and defense industries. During the summer before his senior year, Robert earned a business strategy internship at Fidelity Investments, where he worked with a senior team to innovate the company’s Workplace Investments solution in efforts to double its revenue. “I was able to create a multi-year financial plan, as well as innovate a new financial product by developing competitive intelligence insights,” he said. “My work was seen by the leaders of the division, and I felt the work I was doing was important.” As classes began in the fall, Robert began an internship with the U.S. Department of Commerce, working in the global aerospace and defense sectors. He conducted market research using government databases and import/export statistics, using statistical inferencing to make assumptions about a foreign market.
“Ultimately, I’ve had the ‘problem’ of enjoying all my experiences,” he said. “I thoroughly enjoy working in law, community development, business and economic growth, as well as working in a fast-paced business environment.”
