Well, books are always good gifts, and they’re super-easy to wrap, too. How about one of these great selections for that One Person… FICTION For the independent traveler on your list, “Paris for One & Other Stories” by Jojo Moyes might be a great bon voyage gift. It’s a collection of short stories about change, opportunity, independence, and life in general. Pair it with “The Jungle Around Us: Stories” by Anne Raeff. It’s a collection of tales with the jungle, its mystery, darkness, and richness, as both metaphor and connecting force here. The reader on your gift list who prefers books set in other time periods will love “Cruel Beautiful World” by Caroline Leavitt. It’s a 1960s-era story of a woman who chooses a man over the sister who basically raised her, and the dynamics of family. Put it together with “Jazz Moon” by Joe Okonkwo, a
book set in Harlem, 1925, where Paris is where it’s at, baby. The person who loves a little midcentury drama will enjoy “The Jealous Kind” by James Lee Burke. Definitely wrap it up with another great drama-mystery, “Manitou Canyon” by William Kent Krueger. Cork O’Connor is back and sleuthing. Fans, rejoice. I’m guessing there’s a mystery fan on your list. Imagine his face when he unwraps “Seduced: A Hannah Smith Novel” by Randy Wayne White. In this novel, fishing guide and part time PI Hannah Smith goes in search of heirloom orange tree seeds – or maybe even rootstock – to save an industry. But what she wants…? So do others, whose intentions aren’t as pure. Historical novel lovers will devour “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles, a book set in Texas in the years following the Civil War. When a down-and-out former Captain of the military is hired to deliver an orphan girl to her distant relatives, he partakes an adventure – not

lthough good tidings and joy abound during the holiday season, this time of year can also pose a serious threat to your family, friends and home. The holidays bring an elevated risk for fires and burns, and many Americans may have a false sense of security. A new survey conducted by Shriners Hospitals for Children(r) shows that most Americans know basic fire and burn safety tips but do not practice them in the home. Failure to implement safety precautions only adds to the danger. A myriad of seasonal activities puts the action indoors, where families gather for cooking, decorating and other pursuits that may involve an open flame. Unfortunately, enjoying some of those treasured pastimes means the risk of house fires and burns increases drastically. Many burn injuries and fire risks can be avoided by practicing a few simple safety measures. Shriners Hospitals has provided some practical steps to keep your home and family safe. Seasonal Decor Live Christmas trees need water daily. However, according to the survey, less than half of Americans perform the task. A dry tree can ignite in seconds, making tree fires one of the most dangerous types. Wellwatered trees significantly reduce this risk.

Set a reminder to add water daily to keep your tree safe and supple throughout the season. Choosing the right place for your tree involves many variables. As you select the perfect vantage point, remember to keep trees away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles or heat vents. Consider using wickless or flameless candles. There are numerous inexpensive options that cast a warm, flickering glow so you can enjoy the ambiance of a lit candle without the risk. Lights and Electricity Before installing decorative lights on a house or a tree, closely inspect each strand for frayed wires, bare spots and excessive kinking or wear. Discard and replace any lights that show signs of damage, which can pose a fire hazard. Nearly half of survey respondents admitted they overload electrical outlets. During the holiday season, when you are likely to have more decorations, lights and other electrical items in use, take extra care to prevent overburdening an outlet and use certified surge protectors and power strips. Go back to those important moments, can one of those events be engraved on a piece of jewelry or be
represented in another way? Keep in mind that the cost of your gift doesn’t really matter if it comes from the heart. If an expensive piece of jewelry doesn’t fit your budget, that’s OK. Again, go for the heartfelt gift. Let’s go back to those important moments. Are there photos related to them? Is so, print one, write something special on it and frame it. Create something with those memories, use photos, songs you share, mementos from places you have been together. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to come from your heart and don’t play that “real men don’t show emotion” nonsense. If you want to give her something special, dig deep and man up cowboy! Can you write? How about a poem written and framed? How much do you know about her childhood? Is that something she would like? Find something she loved as a child, a doll, a knickknack, whatever. This means talking to her family and doing some digging, but if you can hone in

Wooden Banner Gift Topper Use the punch for thick materials to cut banner pieces from wood veneer. Tie thick piece of ribbon around gift box, and adhere wooden banner pieces to top. Apply alphabet stickers to banner pieces to spell a festive word or gift recipient’s name. Wrap twine around ribbon and banner to complete. Bow Gift Topper Cut two simple labels out of cardstock using label punch and four banners out of cardstock using banner punch. Gently roll two simple labels in half, avoiding putting a crease in cardstock.
Use scissors to trim flat end to match angled end. Align simple label on top of two banner labels, and trim flat end of banners to match angle of simple label. Adhere trimmed banner shapes to untrimmed banner shapes. Check that untrimmed banners extend beyond end of trimmed banners. Curl up points by wrapping cardstock around scissor blades or a pencil. Adhere two ends of simple labels together and glue to banner pieces to create bow loops. Use paper trimmer to cut small piece of cardstock for bow center. Gently roll in half and adhere. Adhere bow sections together and attach to top of gift box. (Family Features)

ome say they are hard to buy for, some say they will like anything. Either way, if you’ve got a guy on your gift-giving list, it may take some thought. First consider your relationship to the guy. Is he your husband, brother, father or just a friend? This may impact what you spend or how much time you want to put into looking. Next, set a price point, based on your relationship. What do guys like? Stereotypically, guys like sports, cars and the outdoors. These categories don’t include all men, but let’s start here. If your guy loves sports, he probably has a favorite sport and a favorite team. Determine if it’s football, baseball, basketball, or none of the above. Does he prefer college or professional sports? What is his favorite team? Odds are this is someone close to you, so answering these questions shouldn’t be too tough. Once your homework is done, your options are many. Apparel is always a good place to start. You can choose from shirts, jerseys, jackets and what guy doesn’t love a cap? Beyond clothing, think decor. Does he have a ‘man cave’? If so, it could probably use some decor of his favorite team. This means, pictures, posters, rugs, pillows, garbage cans, wall hangings and bobble heads, just to name a few things. This is just the tip of the iceberg for sports related shopping, but you get the idea.
What about the outdoorsman in your life? Again, you will need to answer some questions. Is he a hunter, hiker, fisherman? If he hunts, what does he hunt? What kind of fishing does he enjoy? Once you have the answers, you can get started. These outdoor sports can be very specific, so get the advice from someone who knows what he likes or needs. You don’t want to get him something that is not the quality of the equipment he normally uses. You can also talk to the folks at the sporting goods store, they may have suggestions and will certainly know what merchandise is for the serious outdoorsman. If all else fails, there’s always a gift card. Next, the gear head or car lover. This one is even more specialized than the outdoorsman. Do not attempt to buy specific car parts or accessories without knowing what he really wants or needs. That is not to say that other car related gifts aren’t available. Think man cave again. There are posters, model cars, wall hangings, clocks, rugs, etc. How about a subscription to a car magazine? You don’t have to be a mechanic to buy for the car lover. Gift giving to the guy(s) in your life doesn’t have to be hard. Find out what they like and get specific once you do. All in all, guys are pretty simple. And if they don’t like the gift you give, then just fill them full of holiday food.
