again, but I swear it is for a good cause. Eight good causes actually! Listen, Jimmy doesn’t get nearly the credit he deserves for everything that he gives to the community and the people in it. What he’s doing in this week’s issue is just the tip of the iceberg, so let’s start things off by saying thank you! Thank you Jimmy for everything you do and give to our area and the people in it. It does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. So…here’s the nitty-gritty of what we have going on this week. Jimmy gave all seven full-time employees a page of the paper to donate to the charity of his or her choice. We all picked an organization that means something to us. We also shuffled things around so that we could give a little bonus space to the Lycoming County United Way, which as you know, is headed up by Webb Weekly Sports Writer Scott Lowery. You’ll find that story in my usual space. So that is eight local non-profits getting some much needed pub as we head into the New Year.

As you can see on the cover, we have a wide variety of organizations from across the area that we donated space to this week. I’m sure that you are familiar with most, and you can learn about what they do in more detail as you read through this issue, but here is a quick run down: Beckoning Cat Project – Humanely reducing the number of free-roaming cats, and creating compassionate communities in our area. The Central PA Food Bank – Committed to solving hunger in Central PA by 2025. Family Promise of Lycoming County – Empowers families to become and remain self-sufficient by breaking the cycle of homelessness, providing community awareness and advocacy, and creating mission opportunities for individuals and faith based communities. Lycoming Animal Protection Society (LAPS) – Provides care and adoption services for many homeless cats and kittens at its no-kill shelter. Multiple Sclerosis Society – Helping people affected by MS to live their best

I won’t share which employee goes with which organization, but know that these charities are near and dear to each of our hearts. We chose them because of personal connections and beliefs. We all hope that the bit of extra light that we are shining on these groups sparks extra help and donations so that they can continue to provide much needed services in and around our communities. So thank you again Jimmy. Doing things like this makes me so proud to be a Webb Weekly employee.

Happy New Year! Happy New Year to you and yours! No matter your plans, please be safe. Holidays can bring out the worst in other people, so please make sure that even if you are being safe that you are keeping an eye out for others as well. If you are heading out for the evening, please—please—make sure you don’t drink and drive. You can call a cab at 570-322-2222 or download the Uber app before you head out so you can get a safe ride home. Erik and I will be spending New Year’s Eve with friends, most likely having a ‘family game night’. They say that how you bring in the New Year is indicative of how the rest of your year will be. If that is the case 2017 should be a pretty fantastic year! 2016 has been an interesting year to say the least. It has been full of ups and downs and everything in between. I won’t chalk this year up as one of my top years, but you know what? That is what life is about. Taking the good with the bad, and sometimes the bad makes you appreciate the good that much more. May your 2017 be filled with health and happiness, and may all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s Resolutions! Happy New Year Y’all!

TNR: Trap, Neuter, Return TNR, or Trap Neuter Return, is a humane approach to reduce populations of free-roaming cats. Caregivers from the community monitor colonies to ensure that any new cats receive care and are also spayed or neutered. In 2014 BCP initiated the annual Campaign For Compassion, a fund that paid to spay/neuter 125 “community cats” in addition to 45 cats serviced for the National Feral Cat Day event. The organization would like to expand this service in 2017. Please consider helping BCP humanely reduce the number of

roblem: Cat Math Kittens are cute. But they can reproduce at four months old. An average litter is 4 kittens, and a healthy female can reproduce 1-3 times per year. If preventative measures are not taken the results are exponential. In our geographic area, hundreds of unwanted cats are taken to shelters, killed or euthanized, or left to fend for themselves. Although there are some programs in place, the problem continues. Solution: Compassionate Communities The Beckoning Cat Project, or BCP, located at 1417 East Third Street in Williamsport, opened a low-cost neuter/spay clinic for cats in January 2014. BCP is a 501(c) nonprofit organization funded solely by clients and donations. The clinic has no geographic or income limitations, and works with many established organizations including: • Lycoming County SPCA • Clinton County SPCA • S.U.N. e responded with enthusiasm to the invitation to be the co-chairs of this year’s United Way campaign when we were asked in August, 2015. We did so because we had come to know many of the people who call Williamsport and Lycoming County home. We were outsiders when we arrived in 1969, although John graduated from Williamsport High School during the time his father worked in the city, but that feeling quickly faded as we became involved in the community, and we have long considered this our home. The United Way is about people, many people. The agencies partnered with United Way serve about one-quarter of the County’s population, but it is the people behind the numbers who helped us make the decision to chair the Campaign. The people are served as individuals but they are also part of several informal groups. The list is in no order of importance, all are equally important, and we are not going to use the names of any individuals, because all are the reason we are involved. One group of people is those who need help. A child with cerebral palsy, another with spina bifida and a much larger number who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder are among those who find help at the Children’s Development Center. It is a place that serves not just the children but their parents who often cannot believe that they have found a place that will help them find hope as well as help. The children who discover and participate in one of the summer reading programs at the five community libraries in the County who are helped to retain and expand their reading skills are in this group. The homeless men and women who find

warmth and encouragement at Saving Grace shelter run by the loving care of the American Rescue Workers are part of this group. The senior citizens who find a place for exercise and community at the Senior Wellness Program at the Williamsport Branch of the RVR YMCA are an important part of this group. The women and children who are part of the Wise Options program at the YWCA, as well as the staff who serves them, are another part of this group. And also in this group are the large number of people who go to Diakon Family Life Services seeking ways forward in the lives, often finding new directions for themselves and their loved ones. Another group of people are those who donate their time and money. This is also a large group, including some who donate substantial amounts of money as leadership givers. They are crucial to the Campaign; however, the majority of the funds raised year in and year out come through the workplace campaigns where many small gifts add up to almost three fourth of the total funds raised. We have spoken to a number of such groups and in almost every one someone or sometimes several people have said, “I have used the services of one of those agencies.” That takes some courage to say and often their co-workers have expressed surprise and then support. Sharing one’s burdens was the driving force behind the creation of the local United Way in 1921, then called the Community Chest. The idea behind it was quite simple. The Community was imagined as many people who had a chest full of time, talents and money, and if challenged would pool their resources to help those in need. The idea is now over ninety years old and has raised over $66,000,000, and at least $1,000,000 a year since 1980. It is doubtful that the founders, then part of

what is now the Chamber of Commerce, had any idea that such a massive amount of money would be shared by those with the ability to give to those with the need to receive. Volunteers are a very important part of the United Way. They participate in every aspect of it, serving on the United Way Board or Campaign Cabinet, working on the allocations committee, and evaluating agencies to become partners. They run special projects, like Basket Bingo and the Clay Shoot, and initiate new ventures almost every year. The volunteers stand in a long tradition. What made the first Community Chest Campaign work were the many volunteers who went from door to door and business to business, inviting people to share. As the Community Chest grew it required a paid staff and as co-chairs we are very grateful for their guidance, but the heart of the effort is those who give freely of their time and talents. Ultimately, United Way is people. It has been led by those who are absolutely convinced that they are responsible for the quality of life of our community, their collective home. If people who are hurting, displaced by fire, lost their job, have a sick child, or any of the multitude of other things which disrupt peaceful lives, then we are all the worse for it, and we can all become the better for it if we pull together and reach out to help those people return to full and peaceful lives. We thank Jim Webb for his support for United Way, for his efforts to make our community stronger and better, and for the gift of this important page to speak on behalf of our community. We encourage you to share in this effort if you have not already done so, or if moved to increase your gift to do that, either through the United Way web page, lcuw. org, or by mail to 33 West Third Street, Suite 201, Williamsport, PA 17701. We are near the end of the Campaign but additional gifts are needed to help those in need. With our thanks, John & Margaret Piper 2016 LCUW Campaign Co-Chairs

Hunger lives here. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is committed to solving hunger in central PA by 2025. The Food Bank’s “Bold Goal” is to build a nutritious, accessible and sustainable food system that will provide access to three healthy meals a day for everyone struggling with hunger in our communities. With your support, we can ensure everyone receives the nutrition they deserve. Contact us today to learn how you can help solve hunger.

pounds of fresh produce and dairy products received annually from both local and national donors. The Fresh Express Program supplies fresh food to more than 89 distribution sites each month, which enabled the Food Bank to distribute more than 7 million pounds of fresh produce last year. In addition to fresh produce, the Food Bank has also initiated an innovative fresh milk distribution program. Fresh milk has always been one of the most highly-desired food items in the charitable food network and through this program we can ensure all central Pennsylvania residents have access to the wholesome nutrition of fresh milk. Each week, the Food Bank is distributing 20,000 servings of fresh milk to individuals and families facing hunger! From the 2014 Hunger in America study, the Food Bank learned approximately one in four households receiving charitable food assistance have at least one member who has served, or is currently serving, in the military. To meet these needs, the Food Bank has implemented the MilitaryShare Program. The objective of the MilitaryShare Program is to provide nutritious food to food insecure military families at no cost. As a result of the monthly food distributions, military families who are struggling to put food on the table now can put their resources towards life necessities such as medicine and housing. All of these programs are in place to reach one goal: ending hunger in central PA. In September 2015 the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank announced its “Bold Goal”, a 10-year strategic plan to provide access to enough nutritious food for everyone struggling with hunger in each of the 27 central Pennsylvania counties we serve. To accomplish this goal, the Williamsport facility just completed its transformation into a Healthy Food Hub. By expanding our cooler and frozen storage capacity, we will be able to distribute more of the highly nutritious products that are harder for our neighbors in need to purchase. With the addition of a Community Learning Kitchen, we will be able to work with our partner agencies and individuals in our community to provide education on how to prepare nutritious meals on a budget. Our expanded volunteer area allows us to host large groups of corporate or individual volunteers, who are looking to make a difference in their community. For more information on how you can help, visit centralpafoodbank.org or call 570-321-8023.

or more than 30 years the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been dedicated to ending hunger in central Pennsylvania. Serving 27 counties, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in central PA. Last year, the Food Bank distributed more than 48 million pounds of food - equivalent to 40 million meals! At the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, we live our mission of fighting hunger, improving lives, strengthening communities every day. We truly believe no one should be hungry and we are committed to working harder every day to make that belief a reality. We do this in a variety of ways. In addition to food and meals being distributed at pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, etc. the Food Bank has a variety of programs designed to meet the needs of specific groups. As difficult as it is to imagine, one in five children in central PA may not know where their next meal is coming from. These kids, who don’t have enough proper nutrition, aren’t going to do as well in school, are more likely to be sick and are far more likely to not graduate from high school. The Food Bank has established numerous youth programs that provide nutrition education and healthy food to thousands of children each week through our Kids Cafe®, BackPack, Youth Pantry and School Pantry programs. We will continue to work so every child has access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s ElderShare Program is designed to enrich the diet of seniors by providing nutrient rich foods that they may otherwise be lacking. Many people underestimate the tough choices facing those who are age 60 and older. 70% of the seniors served by the Food Bank report that in the past year they’ve had to choose between buying food and paying for medication or utilities, trying to stretch their budget as much as possible. Last year, more than 60,000 boxes of food were distributed to seniors in our communities, helping older residents avoid those tough choices and live with dignity. One of the Food Bank’s main strategic imperatives is improving the health of the people we serve. To supply the most nutritious food possible, the Food Bank operates an extensive Fresh Express Program. The Fresh Express Program directly supports low-income communities where residents experience chronic hunger and food insecurity. The Food Bank collaborates with local partners to distribute the millions of

crude analogy could be between giving birth to a baby and developing a government budget. There is a touch of joy when it all gets started, as there are hopes that this new budget will be able to “fix” the problems of the past. Almost immediately, however, morning sickness sets in. The initial numbers are not looking as promising as initially hoped

for. As time elapses and the budget in the womb grows and grows, it gets heavier to handle and concerns continually grow on what this ‘budget baby’ will eventually look like. The final delivery is, of course, quite painful. As happy as a mother is to see her new child, she is mostly relieved that the agony of the past nine months is over. So it was with the county commissioners, who finally birthed their offspring, the 2017 county budget, at the special work

session on Tuesday, December 20th. It was a long, long, long time coming. Originally, it was advertised to be voted upon on December 8th, but the commissioners decided to postpone the adoption of the budget by a week, hoping that the extra gestation might make this little monster look a bit better. But at that meeting on Thursday, December 15th, after five hours of discussing, arguing, posturing, debating, arguing some more (and more and more…), the three men finally could agree on only one thing — to come back the next week and try all over again. Like a mother pushing and screaming for the baby to be born, it was certainly not for lack of effort on that cold Thursday morning and afternoon that the budget was not passed. Half a dozen times one of the commissioners would make a motion, but it would die on the vine because it would not get a second. Commissioner Marabito appealed for a spirit of compromise, but Commissioner Mussare was not budging on his position of no tax increase. Commissioner McKernan spoke more than he generally does trying to find some middle ground, but was also at a loss on how to square the circle. Taxes were not the only impasse, expenses were also addressed, most especially the issue of the day reporting

system for those convicted of relatively minor criminal offenses, outsourced to GEO Reentry Services. GEO was a particular bone of contention, as it had been all through the budget discussions. Commissioner Marabito has been continually adamant that the cost of the program, approximately $850,000, is excessive given the current budget shortfall. Yet Marabito has found a significant pushback from those who have found the program in its present form a significant and perhaps even indispensable resource in dealing with crime as it is related to substance abuse. Judge Marc Loveccio even made a surprise appearance at the marathon session coming directly from the courthouse wearing a trench coat that made him appear a little like television’s Lieutenant Columbo. But he did not speak

Last year, Lycoming County school districts reported more than 100 homeless school-aged children.

A home is so much more than shelter, it’s a place you can find compassion, education and inspiration. That’s what we do – and we don’t separate families in the process. We empower families, together, to overcome the obstacles that have led them to homelessness. We do what we can to provide resources for them, but it’s ultimately the families’ responsibility to overcome their obstacles – we don’t do the work for them. Instead, we support them while they work hard to get back on their feet, as a family. Wells Fargo generously donated a house (double, three bedrooms on each side). Two families can use it for transitional housing, but first, it needs major renovations.

Supporting Family Promise is leaving a legacy.

We work to end homelessness one family at a time. When parents are able to find sustainable housing, they also: • Become more productive employees • Decrease their health care costs • Reduce their likelihood to commit crimes • Increase their children’s performance in school

COUNTY HALL like a bumbling detective, but delivered a passionate and eloquent appeal to keep the Day Reporting Center in place. The management staff of the Adult Probation Office Department were silent sentinels during the commissioner meetings in December. During the five hour December 15th meeting, they had to tag team to keep their office staffed, but they were a continual presence at all times. As county employees, they did their best to be neutral advocates, but it was quite apparent they saw the GEO Day Reporting System a huge asset to their work. (And even a cost savings! Studies of the APO have shown that the program in respect to electronic monitoring has actually SAVED the county as much as one million dollars in the past three years. There were other issues that came up, of course, everything from property assessments, to the use of the hotel tax, to a new dam levy system that must eventually be built. After five hours they came up with three different solutions — so they came back the following Tuesday, December 20th, and picked up where they left off. It was a bad sign when they arrived almost ten minutes late for that meeting,

signaling that the months of disagreement were not yet coming to an end. Sure enough, almost as soon as the Pledge of Allegiance was finished, there was over an hour of contentious and even heated debate between the commissioners, even at one point those in attendance at the meeting shouting objections at the commissioners positions. When all the dust settled, Commissioners McKernan and Mussare voted to approve the proposed budget with projected expenditures of $99,960,509 with $8.7 million shortfall over projected revenues, and in a separate motion, approved no tax increase for that deficit. Carrying a debt of $8.7 million may seem a lot, but when the budget discussions started on September 1st, it was at $14 million. The commissioners noted that the deficit will be made up by surplus reserves and hopefully expenses coming in lower along with anticipated state and federal grants. Commissioner Marabito voted no on both the budget and the tax increase. So after much sound and fury, a budget is born. To paraphrase Forrest Gump — ugly is as ugly looks. The baby is not pretty, to be sure, but now that she is born, we in Lycoming County will learn to live with her.

ontinued improvement and construction of additional facilities of the Williamsport District of the Bell Telephone Company has been predicted for 1963 by Clarence A. Welliver, Manager, Williamsport. Mr. Welliver said that estimated construction will amount to $2.358 million in this area, including $708,000 earmarked for the Williamsport exchange $89,305 for Jersey Shore, and $1,820 for the Pine Creek area. In a year-end resume it was disclosed there were 46,700 calls originating/ calls made in the district on an average day, or an increase of 12,900 a day over a year ago. Out of town calls per day were an increase of 1,300 over a year ago. Eighty-five and a half percent of

families residing in the area have telephone service, excluding rural areas. Families having extension telephones increased 34.2 percent to 35.1 percent during the year. Bell’s payroll for the district for 1962 amounted to $3.336 million and local purchases by Bell and Western Electric were $1.074 million. During the year Renovo was changed from manual to dial operation and added to the direct-distance dialing network. On January 26, Bell will open its new Williamsport-North office on Beauty Run Road to better serve approximately 800 customers living in the Lycoming Creek area. Major personnel changes during 1962 were the appointment of Robert Lenhart as District Manager to replace T.K. Spruth, who will become district manager in Wilkes-Barre, and the retirement of Ruth Spotts as Assistant Traffic Superintendent.

onald Trump isn’t going to be your average President. In fact, if you thought he turned the boat upside down during the election, I figure the next four years will resemble a roller coaster ride during a hailstorm! Are you strapped in? Anyway, I have a great suggestion for the Donald and his family. Vacate the White House. You heard (read) me correctly. Don’t move in. Look, the guy adores Trump Tower. He built it. Everyone and then some meets him there on a regular basis. So let TT on Fifth Avenue be the new command post and headquarters for the first family! Meanwhile, rent the White House grounds for functions, banquets, tours and storage. I heard the basement can hold a football game if they want to. It must cost a fortune to heat that place. And for all it’s acclaim, I find it pretty drab. Donald and family reek of gold bullion, high style, and ornate fountains that spew water under colored lights. In that regard, the WH doesn’t cut it. The WH is mere tradition, and Trumpy is anything but. So let him stay in his current surroundings. He even has nice neighbors there. You can’t walk across the street at the

WH and ask a neighbor to borrow a DVD or cup of sugar! Another facet Donald will despise about occupying the WH is that he will be on ground level with us. As flat as a pancake from Perkins. So why is that not to his liking? Over my lifetime, I’ve noticed that people who have mega wealth and control like to take perch above Gerry the mere masses. As in high end Ayers homes on the hill. As in big offices with leather chairs above the workers. That’s so they can “look down” on us, and we have to “look up” towards their powerful mountain. I’m not sure what floor the Trump family resides on (classified information), but it is way up there with the clouds. He not only overlooks New York City, but an entire nation. With that massive ego and all that clout, he wouldn’t want it any other way! Back to the dowdy, boring White House. Compared to the hustle and bustle of Fifth Avenue, that place will put anyone into deep sleep. But just imagine if they open it up for Xmas parties (Goldman Sachs and Exxon have first dibs), Jewish Bat Mitzvahs, and retirement bashes. Kids can run through foyers and slide down banisters that were

Gentleman on Johanna’a right is one of her American Team USA coaches, Tom Walmsley and the gentleman holding/leading Hugo is its Greek trainer. Johanna is entering the ring for her walk/trot dressage event. Highly trained Hugo broke into a canter and stepped out of bounds. Normally that would disqualify a rider. But Johanna maintained and brought Hugo under control, finishing her event in correct Walk/Trot pattern. Judges were so impressed they not only did not disqualify her but actually gave her the fifth place ribbon. The ring was on top of a plateau/ mountain just outside of Athens looking out on a marble quarry. It was the actual Equestrian site for the 2004 World Summer Olympic Games.

Special Olympics is a global movement that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sport, every day around the world. Through sports, health, education and community programming, Special Olympics is tackling inactivity, intolerance, isolation and injustice that people throughout the world face, especially people with intellectual disabilities. The athletes of Special Olympics (nearly 20,000 strong here in Pennsylvania) are constant reminders of all that is right with the human spirit. Many people do not realize that Lycoming County has a very strong Special Olympics program and we are always looking to grow! The mission of Special Olympics PA is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. All training and competition opportunities are provided free of charge to the athletes and their families thanks to the generosity of our local supporters. Funds that we raise always stay right here in Lycoming County. This enables everyone to experience the benefits of Special Olympics that extend well beyond the playing field. Here in Lycoming County, we strive to create awareness to everyone of the opportunities available not only for persons with intellectual disabilities but also to those persons who would like to get involved as volunteers for a great cause here in our community. Special Olympics envisions a world where people with intellectual disabilities lead healthy, vibrant lives grounded in ongoing sports and physical activities, sound nutrition and a deeply held commitment to improve, compete, achieve and demonstrate their personal bests to themselves and their communities. Special Olympics envisions a world where people with intellectual disabilities and their families know the best ways to optimize their health and well-being. We want to make sure that accessible information, resources, systems and policies exist at the individual, community, national and global levels that support them in realizing healthy and productive lives. Special Olympics envisions a world in which people with intellectual disabilities are leaders in engendering and sustaining acceptance and respect within schools and communities. We do this through Special Olympics’ inclusive sports, fitness and youth activation programs. Lycoming County Special Olympics offers the following sports: soccer ,athletics, long distance running, long distance walking, volleyball, bocce ball, floor hockey, basketball, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, equestrian, bowling, swimming, and our newest addition to our sports offered is power lifting. In 2017 Lycoming County Special Olympics will compete in power lifting for the very first time. Lycoming County Special Olympics participates in the following events and looks to continue to grow; Fall Festival held at Villanova University, Summer Games held at Penn State University, Winter Games held at Seven Springs Resort and Johnstown , statewide invitationals, sectionals, and local inter squad competitions. Athletes from Lycoming County have also competed in National and World Games over the years. Volunteers are the backbone of Special Olympics Pennsylvania. We could not exist without the dedication of thousands of Pennsylvania citizens. The time, energy and enthusiasm of volunteers fuel our movement and make or athletes’ dreams a reality. There is a place for everyone in our organization. We are always looking for Class A and Class B volunteers. A Class A volunteer is someone who is or may be in immediate contact with athletes such as coaches, Unified Sports partners, chaperones, drivers, as well as volunteers serving as administrative and event management team members. A Class B volunteer is someone with casual or limited contact with athletes such as sub-committee members, officials, etc. We also offered Unified Sports. Special Olympics Unified Sports creates an opportunity for people without intellectual disabilities to join in the sports experience by playing on a team with athletes with intellectual disabilities. Not only do the players all have fun, but attitude change and transformation happens on the playing field and the experiences create lifelong friendships. Unified Sports combines approximately equal numbers of Special Olympics Athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities (called Partners) on sports teams for training and competition. Age and ability matching of athletes and partners is defined on a sport-by-sport basis. Across Pennsylvania, more than 4,000 coaches reflect a world of acceptance and respect by providing Special Olympics athletes with instruction, guidance, support, and encouragement to achieve new goals. They teach sports fundamentals, techniques and strategy, but they also reinforce sportsmanship, teamwork, team spirit, self-confidence. Most coaches have full-time jobs, but they always find the time for coaching in addition to performing other duties such as obtaining equipment and transporting athletes to competitions. Coaches often begin as volunteers at an event. If you are interested in becoming a certified coach, please complete our online volunteer registration. Although no specific sport skill is required to be eligible to coach, many coaches already have expertise in the sport they select. When Special Olympic athletes join in with compassionate, giving volunteers, there is an endearing, and inspiring spirit that shines brightly in the faces of everyone. This creates magical memories that last a lifetime. If you are interested in volunteering, registering an athlete or becoming a supporting donor, please contact Marc Follmer at mfollmer19@gmail.com.

once only privy to aristocrats and American hierarchy. See that lovely, ton heavy, desk over there in the Oval Office? JFK signed important documents there. Roosevelt gave orders from that seat. Nixon listened to tapes under that desk. And Bill Clinton called young female interns to visit him from that hallowed space. Now, you too can sit there for a few minutes and throw out some commands. Do a few swivels in that lush chair till you get dizzy. For a handsome rental fee, that is. I also propose they tear up the front lawn of the WH and put in rows of basketball courts for the inner city kids and young adults to play hoop and blast hip hop. Keep them off the streets. Let the place be an inspiration for them. It will be a slam dunk! Donald doesn’t need a public funded super jet or helicopter either. He is blessed with his own toys and pilots to play with. More money saved. All the rental fees from the new and open to the public White House will help reduce our national debt. In other words, the WH becomes a year long amusement park that will out do Disney Land. Positive cash flow. Donald knows how to make black ink flow. I doubt the parking will be free, but it will be worth the trip. America is going to be great again! And what about diplomats and high ranking officials wanting to do a “sleep

over”? They also stay in the lush confines of Trump Tower. No portraits of George Washington on the wall, but plenty of marbled shower stalls and flat screen televisions. Free wi-fi too. Serene Central Park is minutes away, five star restaurants abound, and entertainment comes in any direction. The White House looks like a white elephant compared to where Trump is coming from! So stay put Donald, and I bet this idea will fly better than canceling a new Air Force One from Boeing for being over budget! I am putting my money where my mouth is. I filed a request to rent the WH for my birthday in May. It’s a pretty big joint, and no doubt other parties will be taking place the same day as my bash. I also asked for use of the pool and sauna, a big bowl of only green and blue M & M’s, and to play with the red phone that connects Washington with the Kremlin. Hey guys, what time is it over there? How are the women and vodka doing? One rocking day is going to be had. But as a loyal taxpayer (I not only file, but have to release them) I’m entitled to have some fun. Memo to Donald: remain at Trump Tower because it is sooooo you! Memo to everyone else: saddle up folks, the gates to the revamped White House are never going to be the same.

My sobriety date is 4-1-15! Since that day my life started to get better, West Branch and many others have given me all the support and confidence I’ve needed to achieve my goals and become the person I am today. After I got sober, I immediately became employed. I had to get used to normal life again. I had to become accountable, dependable and responsible, which wasn’t always easy. I just kept doing what I was doing, every day. Don’t get me wrong— some days are hard. There was a time when I couldn’t find a good enough reason to stay sober, but today? Today, I cannot find a good enough reason to pick up. As I became consistent in my recovery and making the right decisions, things started to fall into place. My relationships with my children began to heal.

unknown; the sky is the limit today. All I need to do is ask for help when I need it and put in the work. The rewards are endless; at least, that’s been my experience to this point. I wish everyone like me could feel the peace that I feel inside. That being said, I would give it away if I could. I want you all know for a fact—that no matter what—there is hope and we do recover!! So please, if you, or someone you know or love is struggling with any kind of substance abuse, there is a place you can go to get treatment and continuous support. Just make the decision to make the call, that’s all you need to do, at this moment. Loving an addict isn’t easy— but please—never give up. Sometimes all it takes is one person to never give up, just one person! Please just reach out to someone! Today!

hen I started my journey with addiction, the only thing I knew how to do was be an addict, a criminal and selfish. After every treatment center, there was an almost immediate relapse, but I did take something with me from each rehab. It took me many years to get and stay sober! I went to West Branch Drug and Alcohol for the first time 15 years ago. I was treated like a person, not an addict. I felt an instant connection with these people who only wanted to help me. Believe me when I say, they did everything they possibly could do to help me—many, many times—but they never gave up on me. They saw something in me I didn’t see in myself. I really don’t know how, but one day I wanted more for myself too.

I no longer felt hopeless. Then I felt, somehow, I needed to help other addicts like me. I was told about a class that was being offered to become a Certified Recovery Specialist. Feeling very apprehensive, I took the steps to be a part of this class; a few weeks later I was told that I was chosen to attend the 9-week course! After 54 hours of training, a state exam and unconditional support from different people, I became certified. Then came one of the most amazing rewards, I was offered a position at West Branch Drug and Alcohol allowing me the opportunity to give back what’s been given to me. Today I financially support myself; I can help my children when they need it. Most importantly—I’m available. I pick up my phone when it rings; I do what I say I’m going to do— on a daily basis. I am just so excited about the

FAITH

And surely you’ll buy your pint-jug, And surely I’ll buy mine. And we’ll take a cup of kindness yet, For long, long ago. The poem is about gratefulness and hope – two things we cherish at New Year’s. I am grateful for the good that happened in 2016. My cell phone is filled with pictures of smiling faces and precious events that warm my heart and make me glad to be alive. I hope I remember and cherish all of the wonderful blessings God granted to me in this special year. I am also grateful to have survived the difficult things that happened in 2016. I didn’t take any pictures of those awful experiences and events. I am, however, grateful for the dear friends that loved and encouraged me through those times and I hope that I will never forget their compassion and grace. I am grateful that 2016 is coming to an end. I feel this way, not because 2016 was extraordinarily difficult, but because endings are necessary. Every time I go on a long hike or a challenging hunt, there comes a moment when I am ready for the adventure to end.

That’s when I realize that my heart is full and the hope of adventure is being replaced by a hope for home. Midnight on New Year’s Eve is more than just another tick on the clock; it is also the anticipated ending of a year-long adventure. I pray that your heart is full. And I am grateful that 2017 is just around the corner! It is a new adventure just waiting to be discovered, a new chapter waiting to be written. It is bursting with curiosity and hope. My calendar is already filling with weddings and reunions and celebrations! And while these events are being planned, Life is already in the bullpen getting prepared to throw curve balls. Let’s be frank, we make our plans, but we have no idea how life will unfold. 2017 will surprise us in ways we can’t even imagine. I pray that your New Year’s will be full of memories of long, long ago. I pray that it will be an ending and a new beginning; and that your heart will be filled to overflowing. Happy New Year’s, my friends! And remember, we may not know what tomorrow holds, but we know Who holds tomorrow. Be grateful and hopeful!

When holiday plans don’t go as planned. It may be the most wonderful time of the year. But that doesn’t mean it’s certain to be free from illness or injury. So if you need us to get your holidays back on track, we’re here to help. With our network of primary care doctors, emergency services, and convenient locations, our experts are always close to those you care most about.

I try to deal with the bombardment of information and ideas by going back to making something with my hands… not only to express a message but to release the days’ experiences. It is the beauty of free choice to make a mark. It is simultaneously visual and tactile. I can express, purge, emote, release, educate, defy or revere. I know my thoughts and their resulting actions impact those around me. The use of creative thought and visual media can help me to actually initiate change.” Carol will be in attendance at the opening to answer any questions and you may contact her at carolcillo@comcast.net When: The exhibit is open to the public during regular 4th Street Grille hours through Tuesday, January 31st. or rectangle shape frames, the bigger the better in terms of coverage. Leave the aviators and rimless pairs for less harsh weather conditions. Lastly, tights aren’t just for dresses. Tights can provide more warmth under pants and jeans. Your lighterweight denim can still be worn during the winter using this hack. Even leggings can stand up to the cold when paired with tights. For the chilliest of days, you may want to go so far as to don leggings with pants. But, your trousers should be on the looser side so you don’t feel like a sausage. And,

if possible opt for fleece-lined versions. Fleeced-lined leggings and trouser socks have been quite handy for me, so far this winter. The best thing about these five hacks is that you can utilize them all or combinations of each in one outfit. However, be careful with your layers, you don’t want to be too wrapped up to the point of being uncomfortable indoors—mix lightweight with chunkier knits, and make sure you have room to move. Remember, just because it’s cold outside, doesn’t mean you have to forgo good style.

The Baer Facts...

A Christmas Angel Named Ms. Sherri

T

here are not a lot of people who do what this generous woman does for the youth who live in public housing. These kids are less fortunate than most kids in our community. However, they are blessed to have an angel among them. This particular angel came to Williamsport 10 years ago and has lived here ever since. Her name is Sheryn Thomas. Everyone in the neighborhood knows her as Ms. Sherri. Ms. Sherri was born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1954. She not only has kids (grown), but

is a mother to hundreds more. Over the past 37 years, Ms. Sherri has been Saint Nick to hundreds—no, thousands—of children. In the past 10 years, Ms. Sherri has provided toys and clothing every Christmas. Kids who would not have had a good Christmas experience had one this year due to the generosity of this lady. Not only does she hustle her butt off getting these presents together every year, she also makes sure they receive a Christmas party as well. This year 40 kids who live in the

Weightman Building on West 4th Street received presents from Ms. Sherri and her elves. Ms. Sherri’s elves are the many people who donate to her cause each Christmas. She will personally go door-todoor delivering the gifts to the many families Leroy in her building on Baer Christmas day. The 40 she provided for this year is great, but she has provided for as many as 60 in the past. Ms. Sherri has been a foster mother to many children who needed that

mentorship. It is not a surprise that she would be involved to that degree. Not long ago she saved a 6-year-old boy from getting hit by a car on a very busy West 4th Street. She happened to be nearby when this little boy got out of his parent’s apartment and ended up outside on the street. She quickly ran out and grabbed the boy and remained with him until authorities arrived. This is the type of human being she is and we need more like her in this day and age. She’s one of my heroes and to many others’ who lives she has touched. I asked her why she does it and she replied, “Because, every girl needs a doll and every boy needs a little car to drive.”

2017 EAST LYCOMING LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL REGISTRATION BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL PLAYERS:

ou have a job, go to work, and there are things you expect for it. A paycheck, first of all; that’s the big one. You might expect a job title, too, maybe a company car, and you expect regular hours. But, as in “Counting the Days While My Mind Slips Away” by Ben Utecht with Mark Tabb, you don’t expect work to make your life disappear. One of the earliest recollections Ben Utecht cherishes is that of playing football with his father, a preacher with a good arm. In that memory, Utecht, suited up in tiny protective gear, was four years old and eager to learn the game. They were Minnesota Vikings fans then; growing up, Utecht recalls trips to training camps and following his teams. Meanwhile, he matured physically and mentally and excelled at high school football which, at sixteen, paid off: he

was offered a college scholarship, and a chance to play with the Minnesota Gophers. But the college career Utecht dreamed of having didn’t happen: he was injured, injured, and injured again. He played football, but not as much or as well as he needed to play and when it was time for the NFL drafts, he wasn’t picked. Throughout this, Utecht struggled with his relationship with God, but a sharedfaith connection with Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy saved Utecht’s career. Keeping a promise made at a speaking event, Dungy called Utecht’s agent in the days following the draft and a deal was brokered. But, says Utecht, this isn’t a book about football. Five times throughout his career, Utecht suffered concussions. It was common, he says, for players to get their “bell rung.” When that happened, they’d usually be quickly examined, deemed fit to play, and sent back to the field – but for Utecht, the damage seemed to build. Playing with pain is normal in football, but he had terrible headaches, his body didn’t always respond to his brain, important memories went missing, and

his personality changed. He started to understand that the old Ben Utecht wasn’t coming back… Though it’s a little on the rough side, and though it’s filled with obviously recreated conversations presented as truth, “Counting the Days While My Mind Slips Away” is really quite a nice surprise. In this book that’s supposedly not about football, author Utecht (with Mark Tabb) writes mostly about football. That’s not unexpected but how it’s approached is: though the game’s a large part of this story, the authors seem to treat it as just another

. . . . . . . . . . . THE BOX

small layer to Utecht’s life. There’s some name-dropping, yes, play-by-plays, and a light touch of proper bragging, but it all strongly supports the rest of this faithbased, love-filled tale of trust (justified and otherwise) and family. Readers interested in the seamy side of football or the aftermath of injuries will find this book to be eye-opening but if you’re not a fan, don’t let its sportscentricity scare you off. Even someone with the tiniest pigskin familiarity will find “Counting the Days While My Mind Slips Away” to be payday.

New Year, New Organic You

T

he New Year is a great time to reflect on your life and think about what you can do to become happier and healthier. There are many resolutions you can make, but one that can benefit you, your family, your community and the planet is eating more organic food. It can also be easier than you think. To be USDA-Certified Organic, food must be grown without toxic synthetic pesticides and herbicides, genetically engineered ingredients (also called GMOs), antibiotics or artificial growth hormones. Going organic is simple; you can start small and feel good knowing that every time you choose organic it benefits you and the environment. Here are three ways to go organic this year: * Look Inside Your Pantry: Fresh fruits and vegetables may be the first thing that come to mind when you think about organic, but don’t forget about your pantry. Staples such as flour, sugar, vegetable oil, peanut butter and more can be swapped out for organic options and make it easier to have organic food as part of every meal. * Start with What You Eat Everyday: A good place to start is with the foods you consume every day. If you and your family start each morning with a bowl of cereal, try eating organic cereal like Nature’s Path, which has an extensive line of cereals (as well as waffles, granola, oatmeal and granola bars) that are all USDA-Certified Organic, or try this tasty, organic recipe for an Oatmeal Latte. * Think Outside the Cart: You may think that organic food costs more, but you can find less expensive options by shopping at

your local farmer’s market, comparing prices online, buying in bulk (which is better for the environment) and even growing some of your own food. Going organic can be easy, delicious and good for you and the planet. For more tips on going organic, visit blog.naturespath.com/. Oatmeal Latte • 2/3 cup water • 1/3 cup vanilla soy milk • 1/2 cup Nature’s Path Original Hot Oatmeal • pinch of salt • 2 tablespoons brown sugar • 1-2 shots espresso, for topping • 1/2 cup warm vanilla soy milk, for topping • Nature’s Path Flax Plus Vanilla Almond Granola, for topping • pinch of cinnamon, for topping In small saucepan, bring water and soy milk to simmer over medium-high heat. Add oats and salt. Turn heat to medium and cook until oatmeal reaches desired consistency. Stir in brown sugar and transfer to bowl or mug. Using steamer, milk frother or whisk, froth warm milk until foamy. Top oatmeal with espresso and frothed milk. Stir gently. Top with granola and cinnamon. (Family Features, Nature’s Path)

The Roving Sportsman Wintertime Feeding By Jon Pries

I

t would seem, by the way winter has taken a hard grip on our recent weather, that we are in for a more harsh weather pattern for the next several months. In reality, we have had a series of rather mild winters in recent years, but it does appear that is about to change. With that in mind, let’s look at what we can do to help some of our furry or feathered friends make it through the toughest of the months ahead. For the various birds that do not head south for the winter months, there is a pretty easy

solution to help them make it through the snowy days ahead. Bird feeders of various designs can supply needed nutrition to these winter residents. The real question, if you are just getting started in winter bird feeding, is just what to feed. Black-oil sunflower seed is one of the best selections to include in any seed mix since almost any bird that will visit a bird feeder will eat these seeds. The outer shell is much thinner than other sunflower seeds and the seed itself tends to be larger, thus the birds get more food value per seed with the black-

oil sunflower seeds. Those birds that cannot crack the hull will land below the feeder and scour the area for bits and pieces of the seed that are dropped by other birds. Nyjer/thistle seed can be a little pricey, but it is a favorite of all of the small finches, including goldfinches, house finches and purple finches. These seeds are generally presented in a tube feeder with small thistleseed sized holes. Offering a mix of seeds is always a good idea since it will appeal to a wider variety of birds. But, be careful as some inexpensive seed mixes do contain “filler” seeds – junk seeds that most birds won’t eat. It might be better to concoct your own mix of seeds. Safflower seeds—white, thin-shelled conical seeds—are eaten by many different birds and are known to be a favorite of the northern cardinal. Cracked corn is always a good addition to your seed mix since it is appealing to most birds that will visit a feeder. Don’t forget to include the black-oil sunflower seeds. If you are not sure just what to include, contact a local feed store that has a variety of products for winter feeding. If pesky squirrels become a problem, you might solve the situation by offering them their own supply of corn. Merely drive spikes through a board and attach the board to the side of a nearby tree—then stick ears of corn on the spikes. Hopefully, this will lure the squirrels away from the bird feeder. Turkeys, deer and bears spend a great deal of time feeding during the later months of fall, frequently on acorns when they are

plentiful, in order to build up a much needed layer of fat to aid in making it through the cold of winter, when food may be scarce. In the dead of winter, you might see deer or turkeys in picked-over corn fields pawing or scratching through the snow in search of any remaining kernels of corn. Shelled corn is a popular choice of feed to put out for deer or turkeys. Remember, it is legal to put out this feed as long as all of the hunting seasons are over for deer or turkeys. Caution: CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease) is a disease that is only beginning to show itself in Pennsylvania. It is spread from one deer to the next when they are in close proximity to one another. Thus, if you are putting corn out, it would be better to scatter it over a large area rather than just place it in a single pile or two. If you are considering a mineral mix for deer, it would be beneficial to begin the offering once the last of the deer seasons are over. Providing a mixture of minerals now will begin to benefit the deer as they gain stronger bones and will provide better milk production for the does in the spring. This long term offering of the minerals is of great benefit throughout the year, but don’t forget – all minerals and residue must be taken up 30 days prior to any appropriate hunting season. This winter offering of feed can be a fun activity and provide some great viewing opportunities. It may also be of great benefit to birds and animals when snow and ice limit their usual food sources.

Why you shouldn’t allow the nursing home to prepare your Medicaid application Your loved one requires nursing home care, possibly long-term, which is prohibitively expensive. You’re frightened, you’re watching someone you love fade away and it feels like the earth is falling out from underneath your feet. Suddenly, you’re alone with a mountain of concerns and paperwork and nobody to explain what it means. Enter the nursing home admissions officer or social worker. These are wellmeaning folks who have a sincere desire to help. And they offer to prepare the Medicaid application for you. Sounds pretty good at that point, right? Not really and here’s why. Nursing homes are for-profit institutions and although they typically take good care of your loved-ones’ daily needs they are not in the business of, nor are they trained to look out for your financial welfare. Nursing homes are paid by you at their private-pay rate. When you are no longer able to pay that rate then most will accept the state’s Medicaid rate. The private-pay rate is higher than the Medicaid rate. It’s simple mathematics really. The sooner the patient qualifies for Medicaid benefits the more money is saved for the spouse or family. A nursing home employee, however well-intentioned, is not legal counsel and allowing them to file the Medicaid application is at best a short-sighted effort that could cost you and your family a lot of money. There are rules in place to provide many individuals with legal options for alternative, acceptable means to protect assets rather than paying for nursing home care. Careful planning even in a crisis situation, by a Medicaid experienced attorney or Certified Medicaid Planner™, can preserve your assets. Think before you sign anything. And call us. We will work for you.

It has become a mainstay in my fly box. It performs particularly well in size 8.

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

Where Have All the Hunters Gone?

A

nother year why there are fewer hunters of hunting is on opening day. beginning to wind To be honest I don’t share the down; sure there’s view that the deer are all gone, still some small game hunting but it is true that there are less left, some duck hunting and hunters entering the woods some archery and flintlock on opening day than in years hunting still to be done but past. When I started hunting the “big opener” is here and in the 60s I remember well Ken gone. The “big opener” of Hunter that the opening day of deer course is the first day of the season was a big event. For rifle deer season and throughout the the two or three evenings prior to the two-week season and for weeks after opener cars poured into town as they that fellow hunters greet each other headed north to camp and to their with the phrase, “Did you get your favorite big woods hunting locations. deer yet?” Going to camp was the thing to do; When you ask that question today sharing the camaraderie at camp was “RDs” (that’s short for Rectangular as much a part of the hunt as the actual Devices because I’m not quite sure hunt itself. Of course In the “old days” close to a million there are some hunters who are not hunters hit the woods on opening successful and the reasons for that day and as little as a half dozen years lack of success can vary considerably ago there was an estimated 750,000 including some who will argue that entering the woods on opening day. there are no deer to hunt. and Antlerless Flintlock season and the Special Firearms Antlerless Only season not to mention Extended Firearms season in some southern counties. Many of the hunters who participate in these special deer season openers don’t go back out for the “big opener” since a lot of them have already filled their tags. I’m sure there are other reasons as well for why less people are hunting on opening day including the need to satisfy work schedules and a host of other activities and obligations that compete for our time. I don’t know how much of a factor it is but there are certainly a lot more people today that are anti-hunting and you have to wonder how that affects the attitude of some of our young people today. I believe another reason for lower hunter participation during rifle deer season is that much of the better hunting is on private land and folks today are much less apt to allow friends and neighbors to hunt. Combine all of these factors and I’m not surprised there are less people hunting the opener now than in years past. In the meantime I plan to do my part to help keep the numbers stable.

opening of the rifle deer season. It’s too simple to just blame the lack of hunters on the lack of deer especially since there are still a good number of successful hunters tagging deer. There may be some areas where deer are in shorter supply but there are still a good number of deer roaming Pennsylvania’s woods. The truth is almost every state is seeing a decline in hunter numbers-some even greater than ours. Space doesn’t permit me to get into detailed discussion here but there are some factors that are certainly worth looking at when looking at the decline in hunters. One such factor that is often overlooked is that we have a lot more “openers” now than in the past. I remember a time when there was no such thing as the opening day of archery season for deer but today hunting deer with a bow accounts for over 30 percent of the total deer harvest. After getting their deer and maybe even a couple of deer with a bow those hunters don’t bother going out in the rifle season. Add to that all the other “openers” for deer hunting; for example the statewide Antlerless Only Muzzleloader season, the Antlered

Series. Despite the ever-increasing gray hairs on the top of my head, on this team I am the rookie. You all know the names; Bill Byham, Ken Sawyer, Gary Chrisman, Mike Fogarty and Tom Speicher. They are all professionals, all friends, all fun to be around and all wonderful teammates. Football season brings about two sets of teammates during press box duties at South Williamsport and Lycoming College. Assisting me with the statistical record keeping for the Mountaineers are Fogarty and wiz-with-numbers Eric Ranck whose calculations are done the old-fashioned way, paper stat sheets and pencil. What began with an invitation from Byham, during his days as Lycoming College’s sports information director, to help keep the Warriors offensive stats, continues on thanks to SID Joe Guistina. His talented team is a bit more high tech but being part of it remains a lot of fun. The teammates on my six yearly teams provide opportunities to enjoy local sports from a unique perspective and I thank them all for allowing me to be on their respective rosters. What will 2017 bring? That’s the beauty of sports, no one can say for certain. But my New Year’s wish to all of you—whatever team(s) you may be on - enjoy the game and the teammates you share it with; those moments are truly very special. Peace, health and happiness to all of you in 2017!

good as it could be. I thank former South Williamsport Baseball coach Shawn Finn and the South Williamsport Area School District for the opportunity entrusted to share this game I love for the past 16 seasons, each one of which resulted in a District play-off berth. For me it was a unique experience as I had coached both Shawn and pitching Coach Eric Barr in Little League. Ever since 1987 that same school district has afforded me the chance to instill the basic skills of basketball to its Junior High School players. Over those years a plethora of varsity coaches has welcomed me as part of their coaching staffs and I’m much appreciative of their support and confidence. Current coach Joe Simon, in his second year at the helm, and fellow coaches Rob Houseknecht, Art Hengler and Pat McCormick are dedicated to the kids they coach and are fun to be around. No matter how long anyone coaches they are bound to come across something completely new every once in a while. For us, that moment was not a pleasant one during a pre-Christmas game with Bloomsburg. Up 11 points with 2:30 to play the Panthers suddenly went scorching hot, hitting five consecutive three-pointers; the final one at the buzzer to pull out a 61-60 win. I hope to never witness it again, unless our team is the one doing the scoring. Each August it is a great kick to join the WRAK radio broadcasting team for the annual Little League Baseball World
