Happy New Year 2016!

I

know, I know… “Steph, what are you doing on page 2? You don’t belong here! You are supposed to be over on page 4! What is this New Year trickery?!” Don’t worry, I’ll be back on page 4 next week, but I just had to strong-arm Jimmy out of his space this week so that I could tell all of you about how proud I am to be kicking off the New Year by giving back to local charities. After I got him to give up his space, he said I’m supposed to tell you that he says Happy New Year and to make sure that you are safe when you are out and about on New Year’s Eve. He’s pretty adamant about that

no drinking and driving thing, so he also wanted me to mention that you can grab a cab by calling 570-322-2222. Now that I have taken over the illustrious page 2… I want to start by saying Thank You to Jimmy for giving us each space in the paper. I know he doesn’t like to talk about it so I’ll do it for him…Jimmy gives and gives (and gives) all around the community all year long, but this is just above and beyond. Not only do we get to give eight local charities the recognition they deserve, but with each employee choosing the charity we get to spotlight organizations that mean something to each of us individually.

YWCA - Providing free and confidential services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other violent crimes. I won’t share which employee goes with which organization, but know that these charities are near and dear to each of our hearts. We chose them because of personal connections and beliefs. We all hope that the bit of extra light that we are shining on these groups sparks extra help and donations so that they can continue to provide much needed services in and around our communities. So thank you again Jimmy. Doing things like this makes me so proud to be a Webb Weekly employee. Happy New Year! Happy New Year to you and yours! What are your plans for New Year’s Eve? Quiet night at home? Getting dressed up for a fancy night out? Whatever you do, please be safe. Holidays can bring out the worst in other people, so please make sure that even if you are being safe that you are keeping an eye out for others as well. Erik and I will be ringing in the New Year with friends. I’m fairly sure that board games and snacks are on the top of the agenda. I will probably also spend some time thinking about all those resolutions that I made last year that I didn’t accomplish. Ehhhh, no worries, I’ll just try again this year!

The rate of death from cancer in the United States continues to decline among both men and women, among all major racial and ethnic groups, and for the most common types of cancer, according to the Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer.

Researchers from the American Cancer Society have found that walking at least 7 hours per week is associated with a 14% lower risk of developing breast cancer after menopause.

The Society can always use volunteers for our fund-raising events. Whether you want to create a team, help day-of, solicit for sponsorships or have computer skills, we welcome you!

• Relay For Life events, held in May and June • Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, held in October • Gala, held in late fall

To get involved in any of these, please call 570-326-4149.

xciting news! Clip this column! After months of brainstorming within myself, the community, the J.V. Brown Library and Webb Weekly honchos, I’m ready to tackle a new project and take a personalized approach to things. It’s high time to volunteer and give back to our community with a “live” workshop. Since I don’t give blood or much money, I realized I can donate my time, energy and resources. Thus, please welcome the first installment of all this planning: Way Out Writing. With a B.A. degree in journalism from Lycoming College, after contributing to national publications, and after a tried and true bohemian life, I’m ready for another challenge! With the enthusiastic assistance of Jim Webb Jr. and the Brown Library, I’m going to present a FREE (that means no charge for anything, all supplies included) six week creative writing and thinking course for all students in grades 7th to 12th beginning Sunday, January 17th. It will be held from 3:30 PM till 4:45 PM.

It will probably be closer to about 4:55 PM, but I was forewarned. We have to be out of the library by 5:00 PM sharp! They have lives too. You can register any child, from any school district beginning January 4th by calling 570-326-0536. Of course, like a hair salon, I will take walk-ins, but by registering early it helps us plan for how many supplies to have on hand. You can come to one session, or all six. This tasty course is designed to add some zesty sauce to your child or grandchild’s vocabulary, writing skills and thought process. We will put together powerful paragraphs and personal exclamation points through brain buzz. And we’re going to have a blast while doing it! Young adults, I planned these sessions to be fulfilling and freewheeling, not a chore or a bore! What’s on tap? Like the introduction of the 1964 Ford Mustang, “expect the unexpected.” There will be special guests, think tank scrawl sessions, music, question and answer time slots, contests, games and…food (pizza, anyone?) for the stomach and soul. The community minded and generous Mr. Webb may even supply some “Way Out Writing” T-shirts and, of course, provide valuable space in the

Webb Weekly for some of the outstanding stories or essays I plan to harvest. For many years, I have been approached by English teachers in the area to come to their classrooms and present fresh ideas in the area of journalism or writing skills to their young scribes. My tight work schedule has never allowed it although I wanted to take part. Now, with this sixweek program, we can mesh all students, from all schools to meet at one place and one time to hone reading and writing skills. Remember, this is fundamental. Communication is vital in today’s world, and I plan to do it with an “outside the box” and “off the beaten path” approach. No stagnation, the thinking caps are going to churn. My goal is simple. Each young person who comes to a session is going to create their own niche in this world and gain confidence by expressing themselves. Footnote: some of the best and most influential people in my life have been volunteers. From Boy Scouts to sports coaches to college tutors, they went the distance and put others ahead of themselves. Here is your chance to jump on the bouncing bus! And, must I reiterate…it won’t cost you a dime! Who knows, maybe one day that kid down the block who used to scorch

Hunger lives here. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is committed to solving hunger in central PA by 2025. The Food Bank’s “Bold Goal” is to build a nutritious, accessible and sustainable food system that will provide access to three healthy meals a day for everyone struggling with hunger in our communities. With your support, we can ensure everyone receives the nutrition they deserve. Contact us today to learn how you can help solve hunger.

ence chronic hunger and food insecurity. The Food Bank collaborates with local partners to distribute the millions of pounds of fresh produce and dairy products received annually from both local and national donors. The Fresh Express Program supplies fresh food to more than 16,000 people at approximately 80 distribution sites each month, which enabled the Food Bank to distribute more than 5.5 million pounds of fresh produce last year. In addition to fresh produce, the Food Bank has also initiated an innovative fresh milk distribution program. Fresh milk has always been one of the most highly-desired food items in the charitable food network and through this program we can ensure all central Pennsylvania residents have access to the wholesome nutrition of fresh milk. In 2015, the Food Bank has supplied more than one million servings of fresh milk to individuals and families facing hunger! From the 2014 Hunger in America study, the Food Bank learned approximately one in four households receiving charitable food assistance have at least one member who has served, or is currently serving, in the military. To meet these needs, the Food Bank has implemented the MilitaryShare Program. The objective of the MilitaryShare Program is to provide nutritious food to food insecure military families at no cost. As a result of the monthly food distributions, military families who are struggling to put food on the table now can put their resources towards life necessities such as medicine and housing. All of these programs are in place to reach one goal: ending hunger in central PA. In September 2015 the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank announced its “Bold Goal”, a 10-year strategic plan to close the meal gap in the Food Bank’s service territory. The vision of the “Bold Goal” is: By 2025, our collaborative network will provide access to enough nutritious food for everyone struggling with hunger in each of the 27 central Pennsylvania counties we serve. The Food Bank has always had the aspirational goal that No One Should Be Hungry. This “Bold Goal” turns that vision to reality. By working collaboratively with the public and private sector we can reach our “Bold Goal” by 2025 and provide access to three healthy meals each day for our neighbors facing hunger. For more information on how you can help, visit centralpafoodbank.org or call 570-321-8023.

or more than 30 years the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been dedicated to ending hunger in central Pennsylvania. Serving 27 counties, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in central PA. Last year, the Food Bank distributed more than 40 million pounds of food - equivalent to 34 million meals! At the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, we live our mission of fighting hunger, improving lives, strengthening communities every day. We truly believe no one should be hungry and we are committed to working harder every day to make that belief a reality. We do this in a variety of ways. In addition to food and meals being distributed at pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, etc. the Food Bank has a variety of programs designed to meet the needs of specific groups. As difficult as it is to imagine, one in five children in central PA may not know where their next meal is coming from. These kids, who don’t have enough proper nutrition, aren’t going to do as well in school, are more likely to be sick and are far more likely to not graduate from high school. The Food Bank has established numerous youth programs that provide nutrition education and healthy food to thousands of children each week through our Kids Cafe®, BackPack, Youth Pantry and School Pantry programs. We will continue to work so every child has access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s ElderShare Program is designed to enrich the diet of seniors by providing nutrient rich foods that they may otherwise be lacking. Many people underestimate the tough choices facing those who are age 65 and older. 70% of the seniors served by the Food Bank report that in the past year they’ve had to choose between buying food and paying for medication or utilities, trying to stretch their budget as much as possible. Last year, more than 60,000 boxes of food were distributed to seniors in our communities, helping older residents avoid those tough choices and live with dignity. One of the Food Bank’s main strategic imperatives is improving the health of the people we serve. To supply the most nutritious food possible, the Food Bank operates an extensive Fresh Express Program. The Fresh Express Program directly supports low-income communities where residents experi-

your dog is going to land a job as a sports writer for the Boston Celtics and get you prime tickets. Or the young lady with purple hair in 10th grade is going to fulfill her public relations dream of becoming media coordinator for an alternative rock band that is just starting to tour the country and light up the charts! In my book, the sky is the limit, and creativity is the key. I can’t write forever -- someone in this class might be scoping my spot. Bring it on. Adults, you may still have to sit at the table and read me each week. But now, your child or grandchild has the chance to get a live performance. I’m an elusive guy, so you better move on this opportunity. It may or may not pass this way again. Let’s pack the J.V. Brown Library on Sunday afternoons at 3:30 PM! I mean make the phone ring off the hook soooooo much with advance reservations that they will need an additional line for call load. Kids, don’t be timid. Invite yourself, and take a few friends also. As Ayn Rand once said “Words are a lens to focus one’s mind.” Seriously, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I look forward to meeting all parents,

grandparents, guardians of these students also for this mid winter “Way Out Writing” extravaganza that not only puts pen to paper, but brings together a “meeting of the minds.” A huge thanks to Jimmy Webb Jr. who was so very receptive (and kept encouraging me) to this idea of the Webb paper becoming more involved in new ways. I can only hope my fellow writers can also contribute at some point and in some way. And Kudos to the the Brown Library, where I spent plenty of my youth reading and studying, for supplying an incredible venue to host these activities. Nina White and Allison Savage were the key pilots in getting this plane off the ground. Will a future generation of movers and shakers staring me in the face be intimidating? Will they hurl paper airplanes at me? Look, if I can cut and thrust through New York City traffic at rush hour, keep up with my ever increasing property taxes, survive a stroke, do fitness workouts in extreme heat or cold, than this should be a piece of cake. Which reminds me. We may have some of that too. Pick up the phone, or stop by the Brown library to register today!

This Week’s LION New Year’s Resolutions By Larry Stout

F

or many of us, a new year acts like a reset — a chance to fix something that we think is just not working right. Studies show that 45 percent of us will make New Year’s Resolutions. The number one most popular resolution? Losing weight (of course). The top ten cover specific things such as quitting smoking and working out, to more abstract areas as “enjoying life to the fullest.” But the sad fact is that only eight percent of those making these resolutions will succeed. There is more bad news, the older you get, the harder it is to set and keep these goals. To encourage those who want to set some new targets for their lives, on New Year’s or any other day, here are some examples of those who were successful in setting these objectives. The first is one from early American history — the theologian Jonathan Edwards. This man was credited with being instrumental in the Great Awakening of the early eighteenth century and one of the most influential of all American religious leaders.

Born in 1703, Edwards was a brilliant young man from East Windsor, Connecticut. Though he was very interested in science, he entered Yale College and became a pastor. In 1722, just 18 years old, he was called to fill a pastorate at a small Presbyterian Church, located along the docks of the city’s harbor in New York City. Coming from staid New England, this was more than the young man was prepared to handle. Yet rather than give up, Edwards sat down and took pen to paper and drew up personal “resolutions” that he felt would give him a place to stand and a compass to provide direction. Over the next year, he wrote seventy resolutions all together, and till his death, he lived by these resolutions and reviewed them weekly. The key to his commitment was the first one, “Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God’s help, I do humbly entreat him by his grace to enable me to keep these resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to his will for Christ’s sake.” A more modern example of a young man with lofty goals was John Goddard.

OUR APOLOGY TO EVERYONE that we had to turn down regarding enrollment into OBAMACARE. No one was happy when 2 major insurance companies instructed us not to bring more enrollments. They stated they lost too much money on OBAMACARE, and DID NOT WANT INDEPENDENT BROKERS TO ENROLL ANY NEW PEOPLE AS NEW ENROLLMENTS WOULD CAUSE THEM TO LOSE EVEN MORE MONEY! This also limited our ability to help those of you whose plans cancelled. OBAMACARE is not insurance, it was supposed to give you the right to have insurance AT AN AFFORDABLE COST from companies that chose to participate. Brokers were trained to help you select the right coverage. NOW, WE NOT ONLY CANNOT HELP YOU, BUT THE PLANS ARE NOT AFFORDABLE! Please call your congressman, TELL HIM WE COULD NOT HELP YOU, AND IT MAY HELP US HELP YOU IN COMING YEARS! 1108 W. Southern Ave. • South Williamsport • ceburnsins@verizon.net

nary care as the staff works to find them new homes. The biggest misunderstanding about the SPCA is its efforts to keep animals until they are adopted. Success has been achieved through spaying and neutering to reduce pet overpopulation and accepting cats by appointment so that no cat is euthanized to make space for incoming felines. This would not be possible without loving, and caring individuals who are willing to adopt the aged, unwanted animals as well as the young and healthy pets. The work accomplished by the SPCA is made possible through the generous donations from members, fundraising efforts made by the SPCA staff, and to a small degree, fees for services. You can make a difference by becoming a member. Mail your donation today and help the Lycoming County SPCA continue its work. Mail to: Lycoming County SPCA, 2805 Reach Road, Williamsport, PA 17701.

On a rainy California day in 1940, this fifteen-year-old lad was working on his biology homework at the kitchen table of his home and overheard his father talking with another man in the living room. The man said, “I wish I were John’s age again, I’d really do things differently.” Thinking about that for the moment, he pulled out a blank sheet of paper and wrote at the top “My Life List.” It was quite a list. It had everything from climbing the world’s highest mountains to flying an airplane at the speed of sound, from reading through the Bible to lighting a match with a 22-caliber rifle. The list ran to 127 items. What was different about John Goddard was that he used this list as a roadmap for his life. He attended the University of Southern California where he majored in anthropology and psychology, and from there went on to become one of the world’s great explorers, a real-life Indiana Jones. On his list was to “explore the Nile River” and indeed he did - by kayak no less, the first person to ever do so. On his list was to visit the Great Wall of China, the Panama and Suez canals, Easter

Island, the Galapagos Islands and the Taj Mahal. Check, check, and check. By the age of 50, he had accomplished 107 out of his 127 goals! John Goddard died on May 17, 2013 at the age of 88, and though he did climb eight of the world’s highest mountains, he never did get to climb Mt Everest (No.21) or land on the moon (No.125), he achieved almost every other goal and then some. Perhaps it is the young who are more successful at keeping resolutions because they are not afraid to dream. Hope is a great motivator. James Collins wrote in his book, Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies, that these great organizations often had what he termed, “Big Hairy Audacious Goals” (BHAGs). As he wrote, ““A true BHAG is clear and compelling, serves as unifying focal point of effort, and acts as a clear catalyst for team spirit. It has a clear finish line, so the organization can know when it has achieved the goal; people like to shoot for finish lines.” So, be willing to dream the impossible dream. Look 2016 in the eye and don’t be afraid to look to the skies! Larry Stout appreciates feedback and suggestions and can be reached by email at lionwebbweekly@gmail.com.

fter the success of her first children’s book last year, “It’s All About Being Tall,” Rebecca Klar Lusk, a former Old Lycoming Township resident, has followed that up with a new book called It’s All About Being Small. The new book centers on a mouse who loves to boast about his ability to do things that others can’t. Consequently, his boastful behavior only leads to trouble. An important lesson is learned in the end. The book is filled with colorful illustrations and activity pages. Rebecca has once again collaborated with her brother, Robert (Robin) Klar, who lives in North Carolina, as her illustrator. The Klars are originally from Falls Creek, Pennsylvania. These books have become a long time dream…now fulfilled. “Through these books God has given me opportunity to share my own testimony and story of life and how God uses trials we experience to help others,” Lusk told Webb Weekly. “I enjoy speaking at women’s groups and to children whenever I have opportunity. I enjoy reading at local libraries and events where children are

gathered.” Some background about Rebecca (Beccie) Klar Lusk, she is a former educator for 30 years in the Williamsport school district, has completed her second Christian children’s book, “It’s All About Being Small.” Her first book, It’s All About Being Small, was published last year. The books have been a work in progress for many years, and they are totally God-inspired. She said she is only the instrument. It’s her joy to share Jesus through rhyme, delightful characters, and educational activities. She now resides in Mount Juliet, Tennessee with her husband. Rebecca has the following advice for others who may be considering writing a book? “Follow your dreams - let God lead the way and never give up.” ...Don’t grow weary in doing GOOD.” She said plans are in the making for book three in the series, as God leads. Hopefully the third one will surface. Signed books can be obtained directly from Rebecca by emailing at her website, http://www. rebccaklarlusk.com/ It’s All About Being Tall by Rebecca Klar Lusk or sending a private facebook message at Facebook page Rebecca Klar Lusk.

I have no place for Him to lay, ‘tis I who should be blamed! I have no blanket-ladened bay, Nor even soft sweet smelling hay. All inside is maimed. Now look at what I have within for Him to lay His life: The residue of mortal sin, No baser place or darker den, so full of self and strife. A beggars place, a harlot’s rue, a gambler’s heart is here! Where can I hide? What can I do? This light-filled cave will give the clue and make the way most clear. For He came down, this God of might, and chose the worst of stage To say to all who fear the light, “I chose the cradle of your plight ... embrace you in your cage.” Greatest fears what’s feared within, that in my chamber lies The grit, the grime, the smell of sin And lie and rage and boast therin, this gross and evil sty. Oh infant King, come now this day, oh Son of David, do, Come use my cave, my trough, my hay ... It’s all I have, so take Your lay, be birthed in me anew.

Remember your poverty this day ... Gift the poor to celebrate God’s Gift to you.

United Churches began the Shepherd of the Streets ministry in 1988 to provide spiritual, material, health and safery assistance to those on the streets, confronting fear, hunger, homelessness, or other difficulties. The Shepherd Ministry fulfills medical, dental, vision, and prescription needs, by coordinating with local agencies, law enforcement and correctional offices.

ho is this infant disavowed in such a paltry place? No room, no light, no loving crowd, for anyone it’s not allowed, this cave bereft of grace. Is this the One who God would send ... the maker of all space? Could this be He the prophet’s meant? The King of Kings in this poor pent? The Savior in this place? No place to lay His rightful claim in this earth’s den so poor. No bed, no pad ... who should we blame? No nurse, no toy ... who should we shame? No privacy, no door. Stone feeding trough for cradle yet, a smell that sheep have left, This place where only beggars let, For harlots and where gamblers bet; has God become bereft? Or could it be, just could it be, that in this stricken place The Child of hope has placed the key To all the fears that threaten me ... yes, me and all the race? For in such lowly chamber bin I know that I am caught. For here I fear the wage of sin and here I am among all men most frightened to be sought. For I can see no meaner place for Jesus to be born Than in my heart, no worse disgrace He’d bear to suffer in the face of my poor state forlorn.

ince 1893, the YWCA has been a source of support and hope to women in Lycoming County. Originally opened to serve young women working in, and visiting, Williamsport – over the years, our programs have adapted to serve the current and most pressing needs of our community. Today, the YWCA Northcentral PA saves and changes lives every day through two donor-supported cornerstone programs, Liberty House and Wise Options.

volunteering in the community. Last year, Liberty House clients provided more than 2,600 hours of community service to area nonprofits. The goal of Liberty House is for women to not only have the skills to make it on their own, the goal of Liberty House is to instill in women the belief that they are truly capable and deserving of doing so. Wise Options Since the late 1970s, Wise Options has provided free and confidential services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other violent crimes in Lycoming County. A 24/7 crisis hotline provides a lifeline for women, men and teens who need someone to talk to when they are in fear or need help or advice to escape an abusive relationship. Other services provided by Wise Options include emergency shelter, Protection From Abuse Orders, support groups, empowerment counseling, community education and individualized services to help women and men break the cycle of abuse and

The Power of Donations As a nonprofit organization, the YWCA relies on donations to make life-saving and changing work possible every day. Donations change lives. One woman’s story that exemplifies that is Hazel’s. In her late 50s, Hazel was staying in a shabby, one-bedroom apartment with a friend. Hazel was unemployed, had no car and her children had moved out of state years ago. She was often alone. Her sister urged her to apply to Liberty House - the YWCA’s transitional housing program for homeless women and their children who are ready to change their lives. Hazel immediately dove into all the education and empowerment classes offered at the YWCA, including job readiness and interview skills. This training, made possible by your donations, allowed her to quickly find a job as a cashier. She enjoyed using her people skills and the daily activity. But soon after Hazel began working, she was terminated for making continual errors. Through their weekly meetings and daily encounters, Hazel’s Case Manager, Heather, began to notice other small issues. Hazel was repeating

herself and struggling to complete the daily chores. After speaking with Hazel’s daughter, Heather began making phone calls and secured an appointment with a neurologist who ordered testing. Heather drove Hazel to each appointment and sat with her as the results began to come in. In her late 50s, Hazel was diagnosed with early-onset dementia. The progressive nature of her disease meant Hazel would soon need a higher level of care. Your support of the YWCA allowed Heather and the Liberty House Program Manager to be there for Hazel. They helped her apply for and receive her Social Security Disability income and visited a number of care facilities to find where Hazel would be most comfortable. Hazel fell in love with West House, a nearby personal care home. When moving day came, Heather packed Hazel’s belongings into her car and helped her move into a beautiful room with two closets and a private bath. For the first time in years, Hazel has a safe space she could truly call hers where she is cared for and safe. She often swings by the YWCA, with a huge smile on her face and a hug for all those who supported her through this transition in her life.

Snowflakes

A

couple of weeks ago, a very special friend of mine reintroduced me to the art of making paper snowflakes. She is five years old and her name is Elaina. I had totally forgotten about paper snowflakes. I remember making them as a child, but it’s been a long time since I’ve made one. So when Elaina showed me her prized creations, it brought back some special memories. I watched Elaina make a snowflake. She carefully folded the paper in half, and then in half again. Then she cut holes of various shapes and sizes all around the outside of the paper. As she worked, little pieces began to clutter the floor. When she finished, she laid down her scissors and carefully unfolded the paper, revealing her masterpiece. That snowflake now graces my office

door and bears the name of the artist who created it. Last week I saw another beautiful snowflake in Williamsport, but this one was human. Let me explain. Millie was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease over Tim a decade ago. Three years Hartzell ago, that disease confined her to a wheelchair and bed. Last year her son was tragically killed. This past week her younger brother died very suddenly. To say the least, Millie has experienced a lot of loss. Frankly, she has plenty of reasons to be bitter – a lot of important pieces have been cut out of the paper of her life. I can’t really put it into words, but when you’re with Millie, you don’t seem to notice the missing pieces. Instead, you see what remains. Her faith shines through the many holes in her life, revealing the hope and love that reside deep within See FAITH on Page 20

her. She is an incredibly unique and beautiful snowflake, one that proudly bears the name of the artist Who created her. Can the same be said of you and me? Listen, we all have tragedy and grief in our lives - holes that make no sense at all. Our holes may be different than Millie’s, but life has a way of cutting pieces out of all of us – giving each of us the opportunity to be a very unique snowflake. To do so, it is necessary that we identify and grieve our losses – you can’t be a snowflake without holes. But at the same time, healing must allow our focus to slowly move from the pieces that have fallen away to the beauty that remains. And let me assure you, if Millie’s faith in Jesus Christ can help her find the beauty in what remains, then we can too. A new year is dawning. There is no doubt that 2015 cut some pieces out of all of us. But let me ask you:

what remains? If you’re having trouble seeing it, maybe you need to stop looking at the pieces on the floor and turn your eyes instead to what remains. On the day Millie attended her brother’s funeral, she also celebrated her 50th anniversary to her husband, Dan. That remains. She was surrounded by her siblings, her children, her grandchildren and all her friends. That remains. Somehow this incredible woman finds the strength to celebrate what remains even as she experiences more and more loss. I’m telling you – she is one beautiful snowflake – and I still have a lot to learn. Heavenly Father, please help me to see what remains. As the old year fades and the New Year dawns, I pray that all of us will look intently for what remains – releasing a blizzard of beautiful and unique snowflakes across the Susquehanna Valley. Happy New Year!

Retiring Bus Driver Logs Million Miles Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

A

fter logging one million miles on Williamsport streets for the past 47 years, Thomas W. Fortney, 67, retired yesterday as a driver with the Williamsport Bus Company. Mr. Fortney, who lives at 1112 East Broad Str., Montoursville, began his transportation career April 20, 1920, when he went to work as a conductor on trolley cars operated by the former Williamsport Passenger Railway Company, At that time the firm and the Edison Electric Company were under joint ownership. There were no buses in the city then, and Mr. Fortney worked the trolleys which were manned by a motorman and a conductor. The conductor collected fares at the rear while the motorman operated the vehicle up front. Eventually, he qualified as a motorman

and was used for both types of work as he was needed. He continued as a motorman when the trolleys were replaced by the pay-as-you-go type which did not require a conductor. With the advent of buses, the Williamsport Transportation Company went into operation March 15, 1931 When the trolleys were discontinued, Fortney went to work for the Williamsport Transportation Company. This firm was replaced by the present Williamsport Bus Company on June 1, 1955. During his 47 years Fortney has reportedly driven every route. For the last eight years he has operated the Campbell Street run. Yesterday, he made his final trip. He has received several citations for his driving skills. Last year he was honored in Harrisburg as a “driver of distinction” by the Pennsylvania Bus Association. Former Governor William Scranton made the presentation.

“My Grandmother asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrik Backman c.2015, Atria $25.00 / higher in Canada 372 pages

“I

forgive you. Are there any three more powerful words? Can “I love you – also used for countertops, couches, or coats – bestow such mercy? I don’t think so. “I forgive you. In release and relief, those words put things back on track - although, in the new book “My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrik Backman, the transgressions hardly need absolution. Every grandmother’s house smells a little different. Some smell like cookies or old magazines, soup or stale perfume.

But seven-year-old Elsa’s granny’s flat – the whole building, in fact smelled like coffee, cigarettes, a “very large animal of some sort, and Granny. For her entire life, Granny was the only friend Elsa had. Granny played games with Elsa, gave her rides in Renault (the car Granny said she won in a poker game), told Elsa stories (Granny loved stories!) and she taught Elsa how to get to the Land-of-AlmostAwake, the magic kingdom of Miamas, and a troubled knight named Wolfheart. Granny had a lot of superpowers, one of which was always being on Elsa’s side. And that, perhaps, was why she never mentioned the word “cancer to Elsa. She didn’t want Elsa to know, or to mourn. That was probably why Granny never said goodbye before leaving Elsa with an assignment befitting a knight of Miamas. The assignment was a treasure See BOOKWORM on Page 26

hunt (Granny loved treasure hunts!), with clues and messages for people in their building: BrittMarie, who was a “nag-bag,” and her husband, Kent; the boy who danced, and his mother; Maud, who fixed everything with cookies, and Lennart; Al, who drove Taxi. The first clue took Elsa to the door of a vicious dog that lived downstairs. If the dog didn’t kill her, surely the second delivery would: it was an apology for The Monster, who lived next to the dog. As Elsa made the deliveries, three more clues appeared until everything – including Granny’s not-so-goodbye - began to make sense. And so did the knowledge that “It’s possible to love your grandmother for years and years without really knowing anything about her.” Did you ever read a novel that was so captivating that when it was over, you felt a little adrift?

That’s how I was when I finished “My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry.” If you can remember that time in your life when magic was real, grown-ups were mysteries, and you were about to learn the truth about both, then you’re halfway to understanding what makes author Fredrik Backman’s book so appealing: though she’s “insanely” precocious, Elsa still relies on a magic-and-pretend life that’s whisked away so quickly, it’s breathtaking. And yet, that having-to-grow-up-fast time is mercifully aborted by the posthumous wishes of the kind of grandmother you’ll wish you had, the one who knows there’s no need to hurry childhood’s exit. Bring tissues when you start “My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry,” but bring your funnybone, too. It’s that kind of book – one that, if you miss it, you’ll never forgive yourself.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which will cause the nerves to begin to slowly degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in Figure 1, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not receive the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin, and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects. The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or to try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here in the Williamsport Area that offers you new hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (See the special neuropathy severity examination at the end of this article)

Peripheral Neuropathy WARNING!

In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined.

The treatment that is provided at Twin Hills Chiropractic Health Center has three main goals:

The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized low-level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blood flow. The low level light therapy is like watering a tree. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a tree and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper. The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after detailed neurological and vascular evaluation.

The blood vessels will grow back around the nerves much like a tree’s roots when watered. Find out if we can help you. For a limited time receive a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of your nerve damage for only $

Federal and Medicare restrictions may apply.

As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope! Call 570-279-4196 to make an appointment to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated.

I experienced a lot of neuropathy down my left leg, in my thigh and down my buttocks. At times the burning, shooting pain was simply unbearable. I am halfway through treatments and I have NO pain. I can tell my nerves are rebuilding. I am enjoying life again. Dawn B.

I was having problems being able to hold a pen and it was hard to walk. I kept losing my balance. I was at the end and given up hope anyone would or could help me. I saw an ad in the paper about a free seminar for neuropathy and signed up to go. It was the best move I could have made. What a difference a few weeks can make. My legs don’t get tired and my feet don’t cramp like they did. I keep my balance now and feel 100% better. I would advise anyone who is having any kind of problems to come for therapy. Mary H. Meds I am taking for neuropathy were not totally working and pain in my feet was unbearable some nights. I made the commitment for therapy. I’m glad I decided to do the therapy. Better balance, pain decreased and feet don’t hurt as they did before therapy. Rose W.

I can walk bare-footed where I couldn’t before. I can perform most of my daily activities without having to stop to get off my feet because of pain. I sleep much more comfortably during the night. I highly recommend Twin Hills Health Center if you have any discomfort that needs to be addressed - especially neuropathy! Marilyn I.

Online Safety for Kids

P

arents, did you know that 1 in 5 kids online is sexually solicited & about half of teens online have been cyberbullied? Here is how you can help protect your kids online: Know all of the methods they use to get online. Remember, kids can go online using smartphones, video games, tablets, e-readers and other ways. Take charge by setting rules for when your kids go online. Review their app and social media settings to keep their information private. Talk to them about protecting themselves online and teach them to never give out or post their address, phone # or other personal

information like passwords. Let them know they can come to you or another trusted adult if they suspect trouble or are being cyberbullied. Reassure them that they will not be punished for being a victim. If you suspect a Cyberbully or an online predator, report it to local law enforcement. Tell your kids that you will not tolerate them bullying another person. Remember: Kids whose internet use is supervised are less likely to get into trouble. This message is brought to you by Safe Kids Pennsylvania/Lycoming County Partner and the Lycoming County Health Improvement Coalition.

someone get started in fishing. You just might get them solidly hooked and build a lifelong friendship. 7. Practice casting. This may seem like an odd winter activity, but it can really be quite fun. I used to indulge the kids by placing one of my daughter’s brightly colored Hula-Hoops on the snow-covered lawn. Using a practice plug or a piece of yarn tied to the end of a leader with the fly rod, we would make casts at the target from different distances. They once even sculpted a crude snowfish and played a game of catching it. Command of your fishing rod is extremely important. Practice makes perfect. One word of caution; ice is very damaging to lines, especially fly lines. I keep an old fly line spooled for winter practice. 8. Go fishing more often. Sparse Grey Hackle wrote, “If fishing interferes with your business, give up your business.” Although a bit unrealistic, you can dedicate more time to being on the water. It is not only fun and therapeutic, but separates us from life’s trials and tribulations. It’s a great attitude adjuster. Thank you for going fishing with me through the pages of Webb Weekly. Happy New Year and enjoy the 2016 season. May all your outings be filled with good weather and great fishing.

Far too many anglers walk past cans, wrappers, and the like. Carry plastic grocery bags- Lord knows we all have more of these than we know what to do with- and fill them as often as possible. Properly discard unwanted fishing line. 4. Try a new fishing venue. Fishing the same old familiar haunts can be rewarding, as frequency creates familiarity, which usually leads to success. However, visiting new waters satisfies that adventurous spirit all fishermen possess. This doesn’t mean some faraway, exotic and expensive trip. There are plenty of opportunities within the Commonwealth. Trying your luck in pursuit of a new species can be exciting, as well as educational. 5. Don’t take home more fish than needed. Far too many fish end up stuffed in the back of the freezer, only to be later discarded. This includes those that are given to family and friends, often done in display of one’s fishing prowess. The days of bringing home fish to prove abilities are long past. 6. Introduce someone to fishing. Candidates can range in age from four to 84. No one is too young or too old. Involving a child can lead to a future environmentalist or conservationist. Take time to share your knowledge. Dedicate a few days to helping

of my attention in 2016; I have fished these waters in the past and they are all within reasonable fishing distance from our area. At the top of my list is the 1.49 mile stretch of Loyalsock Creek from the Sullivan County line downstream to Sandy Bottom. Another section I plan to hit is the 1.67 mile stretch of First Fork Sinnemahoning Creek from the mouth of Bailey Run downstream to a bend above Berge Run Bridge. This stream has special meaning to me since this is where I began trout fishing in the 60s. into baseball’s Hall of Fame, especially with the Hall voters continued dismay with the talented but tainted ‘juicers’ of seasons past. And don’t take your eyes off oldest offspring Brycen. The three-sport junior star is indeed a Warrior on the war path and is attracting interest from those seeking his services once his high school days are done. Kudos to Dan Klingerman and his associates for bringing the area a firstclass indoor facility with the opening of the Liberty Arena. If you haven’t stopped by the newly opened sports playpen in downtown Williamsport, put it on you to-do list. Its multi-faceted options gives the athletic inclined of all ages a great opportunity to hone your skills. It is indeed hard to believe that we have been sharing these weekly visits since 2003, but it was on a January Wednesday in that very year that we began this column. In the years that have passed, thank you for the many nice things you have had to say with items that filled this space. And to you who have not always agreed, let’s just both be glad this great country allows us both to express those opinions on our mind. All too many bad things have happened in what is becoming an increasingly more hazardous world around us. Hold tight to those you cherish, root hard for those athletes and teams that give you pleasure and always keep those men and women in uniform who protect us all in your thoughts and prayers. From this space to yours – a very Happy New Year!

positive PIAA action toward leveling the playing field regarding the recruitment advantage held by private and charter schools. It was interesting to hear the talking heads on Sunday Night football talking about the Pennsylvania State High School football playoffs. Amidst their chatter was expressed wonderment that the State’s championship games were played as late as the third weekend in December. The above-mentioned Six Classification format has reduced the length of the football season by one week but does little to provide football playing winter athletes from having a break between the everoverlapping sports seasons. While we are at it kudos to Southern Columbia for adding yet another state title to their trophy case. While it is the first AA crown during Jim Roth’s tenure the Tiger machine had a spectacular season that included that thrilling highscoring shootout in the Class AA District Final against Montoursville. Doesn’t see to make a difference as to what level the Tigers will be playing this coming fall. Don’t bet against more Hershey sweetness for their New Year’s resolution. 2016 could be a positive precursor in the Mussina household. Coach Mike’s current basketball squad is turning the corner following a few tough seasons and with a bevy of underclassmen on the squad good things lay ahead. The Warriors even gave themselves a pre-Christmas present with a long overdue victory against rival Loyalsock. Same may be said for the Moose’s chances of someday gaining entry

Deflategate – I promise you that this will be the last time I ever talk about this stupid story. Unfortunately, we live in an era that media can play such a major role in determining how important a topic is. Ever since the Patriots won in late January over the Colts in the AFC championship game, the sports world has been enamored with the story that has got to be one of the silliest things I’ve ever witnessed. The most talked about story in sports in the year of 2015 was about Tom Brady and the debate over air pressure in a football in one half of a blowout game. The story transcended just sports and even became topic of conversation on forums that
