in and profits in black), but other accounts of the origins of Black Friday differ. Gold Rush One story attributes the name of Black Friday to September 24, 1869, when two speculators created a boom and subsequent bust in the gold market. According to the History Channel, rebel speculators Jay Gould and Jim Fisk attempted to control the nation’s gold market. They hoped

Brotherly Love Other historians say that Black Friday has ties to Philadelphia. According to Bonnie Taylor-Blake, a neuroscience researcher at the University of North Carolina, in the 1950s stores around Philadelphia promoted big sales the day after Thanksgiving when many people were off from work. The sales also were held in advance of the Army/ Navy football game that traditionally took place in Philadelphia on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Stores knew that suburban shoppers and football fans would be milling about town during the extended weekend. As a result, traffic cops and other law enforcement personnel had to work 12-hour shifts to corral the extra foot and vehicle traffic around the
city. These cops referred to the day as “Black Friday.” Despite city officials’ best efforts to remove any negative connotations and rename the day “Big Friday,” the name “Black Friday” stuck and even spread to other areas of the country. Black Friday is a phenomenon that marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, though its history might be rooted in more than just buying gifts for loved ones.

lack Friday is seen by many as a shopping extravaganza that begins in the wee hours of the morning on the day after Thanksgiving, offering deep discounts on various items, doorbuster deals and other specials that have customers anxious to raid the aisles. Many believe Black Friday was named for the day retail companies would become profitable for the year (retailers would record losses in red
to drive the price of gold sky high, relying on a corrupt network that extended from Wall Street and the government of New York City all the way to the family of President Ulysses S. Grant. Eventually, the conspiracy unraveled on what became known as “Black Friday.”

Put Giving Twists on Holiday Traditions
I
f giving is an important aspect of your holiday traditions, you may find yourself repeating the same activities year after year. While the giving feels good, it can also grow monotonous. This season, make your generosity feel fresh and new by putting your own unique twist on your favorite holiday traditions. Cook extras for the cookie exchange. A baking party is a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season. The delightful aromas and hours of laughter blend with the sweet treats for a cheery (and tasty) tradition. This year, instead of simply baking cookies to trade with your friends, encourage everyone to bake several extra batches and take them to a local soup kitchen or senior living community. Extend a seasonal icon. The ringing bells and red kettles found outside of retailers across the nation are nearly as symbolic of the holiday season as twinkling lights and red-nosed reindeer. During the holiday season, more than 3 million families and children
rely on The Salvation Army to provide them with a warm meal on Christmas Day or toys for their children. This year, the organization is making it easy to extend those kettle collections offline as well with the Fight for Good campaign, which allows you to create your own fundraiser, including setting a goal and designating the cause you’d like to support. Visit redkettlereason.org to create your own fundraising page and encourage friends and family to donate and start their own pages. In addition, you can donate to the Red Kettle Campaign by dropping dollars and coins into the thousands of Red Kettles found in front of retail stores and on street corners, or donate your time by contacting your local Salvation Army for volunteer opportunities. Add a special pre-dinner starter. The holidays bring plenty of opportunities for celebratory meals, and it’s the perfect time to ask everyone to lend an hour or two to a good cause. Instead of spending hours around a table,

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year From the Staff at
Keep the Holidays Merry and Bright
N
othing captures the spirit of the holidays quite like the glow of bright, colorful lights. Few things, however, can put a damper on holiday decorating quite like seeing a section of those freshly hung lights go dark. “It’s a shame when you go through the hassle to get your light sets and pre-lit decor, such as your pre-lit tree, wreath or lawn ornaments, out of storage only to find some sets only partially work or don’t work at all,” said John DeCosmo, CEO of Ulta-Lit Tree Company, the maker of the LightKeeper Pro, a tool that fixes light sets by illuminating working bulbs so the user can see the bad ones. “When light sets go out, it’s as if a bit of your Christmas spirit did, too. “We understand the frustration of light set repair, and hope our customer service and light set repair tools make the holidays a bit brighter for all each year.”
With these pro tips, you can keep your holiday lights bright and spirits merry: * Measure: When planning the number of lights you will need for your tree, estimate using at least 100 lights for every foot of tree height. * Decide Between LED vs. Incandescent: LEDs are more expensive than incandescent lights, but typically last longer. When it comes to energy usage, a tree with 1,000 incandescent lights can cost $10 over an average holiday season while the same tree using LEDs costs around $1.50. * Consider Indoor vs. Outdoor: Commercial-grade light sets are more reliable for outdoor use because of their durability and thicker insulation. * Inspect: Before stringing lights, check for broken bulbs and sockets, frayed cords, burned out lights and loose connections. For sets with bulb outages, use a

The Bookworm’s Gift Guide For Kids and Teens By Terri Schlichenemeyer PICTURE BOOKS for kids ages about 3-6 or the 3-to-5-year-old who’s about to be a Big Brother or Sister, “Ready, Set… Baby!” by Elizabeth Rusch, illustrated by Qin Leng will be as welcome as a new baby. This book answers a lot of questions the kiddo will have about the new sibling, and in the cutest way possible. The budding naturalist on your list will love “Creekfinding: A True Story” by Jacqueline Briggs Martgin, illustrations by Claudio McGehee. It’s the true story of a creek, how it disappeared, and how it was rescued from the soil to benefit people and wildlife again. For the kid who needs a boost of selfconfidence, you’ll want to wrap up “Leo’s Gift” by Susan Blackaby and Joellyn Cicciarelli, illustrated by Carrie Schuler. It’s a book about Leo, who wants to find a big talent that he can call his own. Pair it up with “Super Manny Stands Up!” by Kelly DiPucchio, illustrated by Stephanie Graegin, the story of a young raccoon with an invisible hero’s cape and a need to conquer all – especially when it really matters. Kids who love books always want books for gifts, don’t they? So why not

give “Balderdash! John Newbery and the Boisterous Birth of Children’s Books” by Michelle Markel, illustrated by Nancy Carpenter. It’s a book about books and a bookish bookworm. Bonus: it’s also a great gift a grown-up librarian, too. Wrap it up with “The Book of Gold” by Bob Staake, a book about a book that can turn itself into solid gold! Also look for “Give Me Back My Book!” by Travis Foster and Ethan Long, a book about a fight over a book, and more. Little language lovers will enjoy “Nothing Rhymes with Orange” by Adam Rex. Poor Orange. He’s all left out…Pair it up with “Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast” by Josh Funk, illustrated by Brendan Kearney, a tale of rivalry over — gasp! — the last drop of syrup or “A Cooked-Up Fairy Tale” by Penny Parker Klostermann, illustrated by Ben Mantle, a fairy tale with food. Parents who are old enough to remember Pet Rocks will love to read “Charlotte and the Rock” by Stephen W. Martin, illustrated by Samantha Cotterill aloud. It’s a tale of a little girl who longs for a pet of her own, so her parents buy her: guess what? Almanac 2018. Filled with facts, maps, cartoons, and pictures, this is a great book for browsing, for that mid-winter vacation, and for just having fun. Also look for “Time for Kids: 50 States, Our America, with illustrations by Aaron Meshon. It’s a book they’ll love and learn from For the child who races through a series he (or she!) loves, look for the boxed set of “Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. The first book was fun. The second book was better and it goes upward from there. Bonus: they’ll look great on the shelf, after she’s read them all three times. If you’ve got a budding environmentalist on your list, “Hidden Wildlife: How Animals Hide in Plain Sight by Jim Arnosky makes a great gift. Filled with fascinating information and lots of double-fold pages, it’s a book about camouflage in the animal world. Wrap it up with “Animalsaurus by Tracey Turner, illustrated by Harriet Russell, a book about extinct creatures from prehistoric times and interesting animals that still roam the planet. Also look for “Around the World in 80 Maps by Clare Hibbert, a book with activities and lots of information for the kid who might love to travel. The kid who likes fun will like “Marge in Charge by Isla Fisher, a chapter book about the Button Family’s new babysitter. Nope, this isn’t your normal nanny, as your young giftee will learn in three short stories inside one fun book.

he unofficial beginning to the holiday shopping season, Black Friday compels many people to get out of bed in the middle of the night in the hopes of landing great deals on gifts for their loved ones. The competition to find deals on Black Friday can sometimes get heated. As a result, some shoppers have found themselves in unsafe situations in the past. Many retailers have taken steps to make the atmosphere in their stores on Black Friday less hectic and more consumerfriendly. Shoppers can follow suit and take the following precautions to ensure this Black Friday is as safe as possible. • Recognize you might not get everything on your list. Inventory may be limited in regard to sale items on Black Friday. Make a list of the items you hope to buy and where you hope to buy them, ranking each item in terms of importance. Then calmly move from store to store, recognizing that you may not end up with every item on your list. Accepting this ahead of time can make the day seem less hectic and safer. • Protect and conceal your purchases. Shoppers might not be as sharp when shopping Black Friday sales in the wee hours of the morning. That could make them more vulnerable to thieves. Protect and conceal purchases at all times. If necessary, bring items to the car after each purchase, making sure to
place them in a concealed vehicle trunk where they are not visible to prospective thieves. • Leave small children at home. While horror stories of Black Friday holiday shoppers stampeding through stores are few and far between, malls may not be the safest places for small children to spend the day after Thanksgiving. Overstressed shoppers running on fumes and long lines at the checkout counters can make things unsafe for small kids and try their patience. Shoppers who plan to shop on Black Friday should leave their small children home with a spouse or relative to avoid accident or injury. • Park in well-lit areas. Parking can be hard to find on Black Friday. But shoppers should not give in and park far away from stores in poorly lit areas of parking lots. Doing so makes shoppers vulnerable to theft or attack. • Be attentive in the parking lot. In addition to keeping an eye out for prospective thieves or attackers, Black Friday shoppers should be mindful of motorists in the parking lots. Tired shoppers may be focused on getting home and speed through parking lots. Stay alert to avoid exhausted drivers. Finding deals might be the ultimate goal of Black Friday, but shoppers also must be mindful of safety when shopping during the unofficial beginning of the holiday shopping season.

How to Prepare for Black Friday
B
lack Friday devotees know that the day after Thanksgiving is a day for deals. While some shoppers may associate Black Friday with midnight openings or crowded stores, many retailers have gone to great lengths to make Black Friday shopping safer and more customer-friendly. Shoppers who want to land the best Black Friday deals need not camp outside their favorite stores on Thanksgiving night. Oftentimes, landing the best deals just takes a little preparation and due diligence on the part of shoppers. • Peruse Black Friday ads in advance of the big day. Many retailers begin advertising
their Black Friday deals well in advance of Thanksgiving. Shoppers who know which stores they want to visit on Black Friday should begin looking for those stores’ fliers in early November, and continue to do so as Black Friday draws closer. This gives shoppers a chance to plan their Black Friday shopping so they can visit stores with the most enticing or time-sensitive deals first. • Create a list and make shopping a team effort. Once retailers have announced the details of their Black Friday sales, shoppers can make a list of items they hope to purchase. When shopping, don’t go it alone. Instead, team up with a spouse, neighbor or older children who can then be given certain
Christian Light
items to find in the store once doors open. • Bring snacks. Unless shoppers are visiting specialty retailers who cater to a small and very distinct clientele, they should expect long checkout lines on Black Friday. As a result, shoppers should bring healthy snacks along so they get an energy boost and don’t succumb to hunger while waiting in line. • Download retailer apps. Many retailers now have their own smartphone apps, which may or may not advertise Black Friday deals. Download such apps so you can stay upto-date on the latest deals. Some retailers may even match their competitors’ appadvertised deals. • Bring an envelope for receipts. Many Black Friday deals include discounts that are offered via mail-in rebates. These rebates typically require consumers mail their

receipts to a retailer or manufacturer listed on the receipt. Shoppers can avoid losing out on rebatebased savings by bringing along an envelope for their receipts. Black Friday is a day for deals. Holiday shoppers who plan ahead can save substantial amounts of money and may even get much of their shopping done early.

reputation to protect. Shopping local keeps your community strong. Spending money locally keeps that money in the community, which helps the community grow. A growing community will then have a better opportunity to support other local organizations like youth sports, non-profits and charitable organizations. Shopping local also creates jobs. The more successful a local business, the more people they will need to hire and the more people who are employed, the healthier a community becomes. Also consider how local businesses can make your community more unique. Big box chain stores are everywhere and their products are all the same. But let’s say your community has a bakery for dogs. Now that’s unique and people will come from far away to check it out. The more people that shop your community, the stronger its economy becomes and this can benefit everyone. From a tax standpoint small businesses make better use of your tax dollars. These businesses require much less infrastructure investment than national chains. Small local businesses are also more efficient with the use of public services. Both of these factors allow your tax dollars to go father. Shopping local this holiday season is a great idea for many reasons. So before you start checking things off of your list, check out your locals business. It’s a win for them, for you and for your community.
Holiday Gift Guide
is the season for holiday shopping and for some people it can get tedious. Some folks put their heart and soul into holiday shopping, getting gifts for everyone from their family to their mail carrier. But what if you could do your shopping and help your community all at the same time? One way to do this is to shop local. Shopping local is a concept that has been around for years, but tying it to the holidays really got a push with Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday is the Saturday following Thanksgiving and Black Friday. It began in 2010 as a marketing campaign by American Express. While Black Friday benefits the big box retailers and Cyber Monday benefits online shopping, Small Business Saturday carves out a day for the ‘Mom and Pop’ stores. So how does shopping local benefit you the consumer? First, you have much more control and probably get much better customer service. Let’s say you’re buying a tool for Dad. Do you think you will get better service at an enormous big box home improvement store or from the local hardware store that has been in business for 30 years? Have you ever tried to find help at one of these warehouse type stores? Good luck finding someone over 18 to answer your question. It is also more likely that local business owners will stand by their products, as they have their

he holidays can be both wonderful and hectic. You want to include everyone on your gift giving list and you want to make their gift special. One special person who shouldn’t be overlooked is that person who is so important to your child. They spent months with them, being patient, watching them grow both intellectually and physically and your child’s life would not be the same without them — they are our teachers. For many children the relationship that they form with a teacher is something they will remember for a lifetime. That teacher may have inspired them, shown them that anything is possible or just been the person they needed at that time in their life. Here are a few gift ideas for these very important people. Let’s start off with the practical approach. It’s no secret that these very important people aren’t paid what they are worth. So, if you don’t have a problem with it, how about some cash? Some folks might find this inappropriate. If you are not one of these people and you think your teacher isn’t either, give them the gift of cash. Another way to go, somewhat like cash is the classic gift cards. Make sure you child knows where their teacher likes to shop or eat and get them a gift card. It’s safe to say that teachers love kids and what better gift from a child, no matter how old, than something homemade? It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate; it just has to come from the heart. For younger kids, get out the crayons and construction
paper. For older kids, maybe it’s a letter or a picture with something inscribed. How about some tasty treats? Does your teacher have a sweet tooth or how about something salty? Foods for gifts are universally appreciated, except maybe fruitcake. Instead of fighting with administration over classroom supplies, how about giving them as a gift? Some teachers probably don’t have the supplies they want or need. Find out what supplies would make their job easier or more rewarding and give them as a holiday gift. Our teachers are overworked so how about giving them your time? Volunteering to help them with whatever they need might be a welcome surprise. Time is valuable and your time might make all the difference in the world. Consider going big. Contact other parents and pool your money. The gift could be specifically for the teacher or again, something to make their job easier. Most teachers love what they do and something that can benefit their whole class usually makes them happy and proud. Maybe it’s supplies or maybe it’s something bigger like a computer or a SMART Board. If you pool your money, you might be able to give them something really special. Our teachers are a great and sometimes underappreciated part of our children’s lives. With the fast pace of the holiday season, it’s easy to forget these heroes. Take the time, find out what would make them smile and include them on your gift giving list.

hopping for holiday gifts is not always easy. Supplies are limited, crowds are big and checkout lines are long. And, that is just half the battle. Making out a gift list is the other. Some people are easy to buy for. They tell you exactly what they want. Others are not so easy. Ask them for gift ideas, and they come up with nothing. Some people are hard to buy for because they are so particular, others, because they have everything they could want and more. If you are having a hard time deciding what to get the hard-to-buy-for person on your list, here are some tips. Listen closely Most people have needs and wants, even
those who don’t think they do. Perhaps the person on your list has been meaning to have something repaired or replaced or to try something new. If you listen long enough, you may just uncover a need or want that would make the perfect holiday gift. Continue a service If you do not uncover a particular need or want, perhaps you could continue a service. Perhaps the person on your list has a monthly housekeeping or lawn service that you could take care of for a few months. Perhaps they have a magazine or newspaper subscription you could renew. Look at interests
If services are not the way to go, consider the person’s interests. Perhaps there is something you could give them that pertains to an interest or hobby, like ball game tickets for the sports enthusiast, an art class for the illustrator or a set of tools for the woodworker. Consider gifts of time No matter how much effort you put into the search, a tangible gift may not suit the person on your list. Time, on the other hand, whether with you or someone else, might just do the trick. Movie buffs might enjoy a sneak peek showing and dinner afterwards with you, while a couple with kids might enjoy a night away while you take care of the kids. Charitable recipients might enjoy an afternoon of volunteering with you at the local soup kitchen.
Shop around If nothing but a tangible gift will do, look for the uncommon. One search online and around town will uncover a number of possibilities, one of which might just make the perfect gift for the hard-to-buy-for person on your list. You never know. That scented rose hat might tickle the person pink. These are just a few ideas for shopping for the hard-to-buy-for person on your. There are other options, including gift cards and homemade gifts. Who wouldn’t enjoy a $50 gift card to spend as they wish or a plate of chocolate chip cookies? As always, think about what would make the person happy and abide by their wishes. If they yearn for nothing more than a quick phone call from you, then that’s what you should give them.

Get Ready to Sparkle
Tips for being the ultimate holiday host
‘T
is the season for holiday gatherings. Decorating and preparing to host a festive party or get-together can be stressful, but with these tips, you can add a seasonal sparkle that makes guests feel welcome and ensure that you - and your home - are ready to look and play the part.
Platinum High Impact White can deliver four shades visibly whiter teeth, starting in just three days, so your smile is at its whitest for those holiday moments and photos. Keeping your smile white can be convenient and affordable, so go ahead and indulge in your favorite red wine and holiday treat.
Brighten up your home. Seasonal decor and holiday lights enhance both the interior and exterior of your home to create a welcoming atmosphere for family and guests alike. Further set the mood with a seasonal soundtrack that plays softly in the background throughout your gathering and strategically place holiday-scented diffusers and candles throughout your home. Give careful attention to lighting overall, adding task lighting where needed to keep every room cheery and bright.
Set a shining table. Dress up the dining room table with elegant place settings, including fine china or crystal dishes and glassware. For a more formal gathering, consider placing name cards in stylish holders so guests know where to take their seats. Adding seasonalcolored accents throughout the table can also help set the mood, as can displaying desserts on tiered serving trays. Even if the center of the table will be filled with food, look for creative, subtle ways to infuse the elegance with a pretty centerpiece that brings the whole spread together.
Look your best. The holidays are a time when you can’t stop smiling as you gather with loved ones, attend holiday parties and seasonal work events, or pose for those annual family photos. It’s important you look and feel your best, which starts with your smile, along with choosing the right outfit and accessories that add a festive touch. Five ways to help those in need during the holidays
G
often see an influx of volunteers during the holidays, most are still grateful for the extra hands to help serve a meal or assist with other tasks around the facilities. Host a Coat Drive Providing clothing, specifically coats, for the less fortunate during the colder months is another way to assist those in your community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a warm winter coat is considered a “budget extra” for nearly 15 percent of Americans living in poverty. National non-profit organization, One Warm Coat, is dedicated to providing a free, warm coat to any person in need. The organization has facilitated more than 27,000 coat drives nationwide and has a goal of collecting 1 million coats this winter in celebration of its 25th season of giving. Through its six-step process, the non-profit provides all the tools necessary to hold a coat drive and to distribute the coats in local communities where they were collected. Learn more about how you can get involved at onewarmcoat.org/ youcanhelp. Adopt a Family There are many organizations that can help you sponsor a family in your area to help provide gifts and other necessities for over the holiday season. Most can provide you with a list of items each family member needs and wants to make shopping easier. (Family Features & One Warm Coat)

Holiday Gift Guide
iving is the true spirit of the holiday season. However, in addition to gift-giving in the traditional sense, there are other meaningful ways to make a difference in your community and give back to those in need — including the 3.5 million people who experience homelessness each year, according to the United States Census Bureau — during one of the most critical times of the year. By giving money, time or material items, or partaking in other small acts of kindness, you can spread holiday cheer and help instill a sense of giving in others. To get started, here are some ideas you can put into action this holiday season. Donate to a Food Pantry Churches and food pantries are always in need of donations, and the holiday season is a great time to help provide a meal for someone who may not otherwise be able to eat. Canned goods and other nonperishable items like cereal, oatmeal, rice, peanut butter, canned tuna and spices are often needed. Some pantries can also use non-edible items, such as soap and other toiletries, and simply donating money is always an option, as well. Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen Because extended exposure to cold weather can be dangerous, soup kitchens and homeless shelters are often more crowded during this time of year.
