ell, Jimmy is traveling the valley as Hunter plays in all the Christmas break basketball tournaments and in between games, he is enjoying the great outdoors with a little hunting with the boys. That leaves me here in the big open space of page 2! I hope y’all enjoyed your holidays; it’s hard to believe that we are starting a brand new year again. The cover of the paper may say ‘Volume 16’, but because our years work like centuries do, we are just a couple weeks shy of celebrating the 15th anniversary of the first issue of Webb Weekly. It’s incredible how far we have come in 15 years, and I am excited to see what the future brings going forward. One of the best ways (in my opinion) for us to keep putting out the best product we can is to give you, the reader, what you want. So, as always, I am up for suggestions if you have a subject, event, or person you would like to see us do a story on. You can send any story suggestions to webbnews@
webbweekly.com! There is often so much going on in the area, and so many people are doing wonderful things that it is easy for me to miss something without a little help from my friends. So help me out, and I will do my best to bring you the best and most exciting things our area has to offer every week. Are you making New Year’s resolutions? I mentioned a couple last week, so I am starting to think about the best way to implement them. My mother-in-law was sweet enough to help me out with my attempt to not kill a houseplant by getting me one for Christmas. It took me a minute to figure out what precisely the plant was (the tag simply said ‘fern’), but I figured out that it is a staghorn fern and now I am set to take as best care I can of the little darling. So far, except for the fact that my cat won’t stop chewing on it, it seems to be going well. I’m heading out this weekend to find a hanging basket so I can keep it away from Stormy’s chompers! And no worries, I checked, and according to the ASPCA database, staghorn ferns are non-toxic to dogs,
in the bracelet allows for the scents to work their magic without being obtrusive. I also was given an oil diffuser that is just small enough to fit on my desk for the same purpose. I have a diffuser at home and often use different oils to promote whatever it is that I need at the moment. Calm, mood boosting, concentration, etc. Since I tend to run more than a little high-strung, I am willing to try just about whatever to help keep the peace and calm inside my brain. So I also asked for a salt lamp for Christmas. I am the first to admit I was/am a little leery of believing that a lamp made of salt could be of any help to me. However, supposedly these lamps offer a variety of benefits like improving air quality, thus making it easier to sleep and taming allergies and asthma and boost our mood and energy levels, especially for people who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or depression. Now, I’m taking all of this with a grain of salt (pun intended), because again, it’s salt. But again, I’m willing to give it a go and see what happens. So there’s my game plan and here’s to a happy, healthy and busy new year!

cats, and horses, so while his chewing is bothersome, it won’t hurt him! The other resolutions were to eat better, move more and stress less. Eating better is probably the easiest of Steph the group. Since I enjoy Nordstrom cooking anyway, it’s really just a matter of cooking fewer carbs and more veggies, and that will pretty much take care of that. Moving more is going to require more effort. I’m thinking that starting slow and doing yoga a few times a week is the best place to start. After that, I think I will pull out some of the old P90X DVDs and try not to die doing those workouts! Moving more will also have the side effect of aiding in the stress less department. I also asked for a few things for Christmas to help me along. I got a bracelet that you can insert little felt circles in, which you add essential oils to. There are a ton of different oils that the scents of are supposed to help lower stress, clear your mind and improve concentration. Putting them

WXPI Williamsport’s Community Radio Station Presents News, Views and Information You Can Use

ommercial radio stations in the area are well known to listeners. They present a variety of formats and musical styles and meet an entertainment need for those listeners. But there is another type of radio station in the area, and that is Williamsport’s community radio station WXPI, 88.5 on the radio dial. What is a community radio station and what makes it different from commercial radio stations? According to KHOI Community Radio website, “Community radio is when local people produce and broadcast their own programs and participate in operating the station. It is community space for people to meet and collaborate. The urge to do community radio fulfills the basic desire for communication and self-expression and is at the forefront of today’s democracy movements.” Curt Musheno, president and chief engineer for WXPI, described the historical background the station. “The idea for

WXPI arose when the volunteers of the former Williamsport Guardian newspaper learned that the FCC planned to open up some space for community radio on the FM dial. By fall 2007, an application had been made to FCC for a new non-commercial educational (NCE) station, and by spring 2008, the FCC issued a construction permit to the organization, known as of 2011 as ‘Williamsport Independent Media.’” The purpose of WXPI Community Radio is to give a voice to the community on the air and online. What distinguishes WXPI from every other radio station in the world, according to Musheno, is that it is local content made by the local people living in Williamsport, Jersey Shore, and surrounding areas. Essentially, anyone local to the area that wants to be a guest, or volunteer his or her time and effort in order to host a radio show, is welcome to participate in the WXPI Community Radio station. Musheno said the early years of the station were anchored through the es-
sential volunteer efforts of early Station Manager Isaac Conner and Station Engineer Fletcher Kaufman, alongside General Manager Alison Hirsch and President Cynthia Staiman-Vosk, who raised money from key early funders, including the Central PA Building Trades Council, the Northern Tier Labor Council, and many individuals. Graphic artist Barbara Andreasson designed the WXPI logo, and the station was managed for a time by local residents, Warren Earl and Chris Gartelman, and utilized the creative efforts of many local radio hosts over the years. Musheno said Williamsport Independent Media and WXPI Community Radio is grateful to the First Community Foundation Partnership, who purchased the Emergency Alert System serving the listeners of WXPI Community Radio. Williamsport Independent Media and WXPI Community Radio are also grateful for equipment donations given by Todd Bartley of Fox Sports Williamsport (92.7 FM & 104.1 AM) and News Talk (104.1 FM & 1600 AM), as well as a donation of computers given by the local organization STEP, Inc. “WXPI Community Radio 88.5 FM is a listener-supported, independent com-

“I was told that both of my knees were “bone on bone” and that I needed knee replacement surgeries. I had very bad pain in both knees in the morning when I woke up and while I slept at night. Climbing the stairs was very difficult. I received stem cell injections in both knees at Lycoming Physical Medicine. I felt a difference in 24 hours and within a month and a half, I was pain free! Maria I would highly recommend stem cell injections to those facing knee replacement surgery!”

has an extraordinary radio culture.” He said the easiest thing a person can do to support WXPI Community Radio, is to subscribe online at wxpiradio.org and become a monthly donor. Currently, they need 275 members donating $5 a month to meet their operational needs and to show their grantors that they are having a positive impact on the community. “We also need underwriting donations from local area businesses and foundations, in order to raise the new radio tower,” Musheno said. “Underwriters are welcome and encouraged, because their tax-deductible donations will enable their messages to play in the underwriting rotation, periodically at the top and bottom of the hour.” Musheno continued, “WXPI Community Radio exists for local residents to speak out and express their minds, interests, and opinions, as well as help community groups and organizations to deliver powerful public service messages, and to announce and organize community events and actions, on-the-air and online, all in service to our local community. “It’s your radio, it’s my radio, it’s independent radio for open minds.”

There are various fundraising efforts and strategies being used to help finance the station. The “Drive to Stay Live” is the ongoing campaign to support WXPI Community Radio by funding the operational expenses of running an all-volunteer independent community radio station. Currently, the annual goal for operating expenses is $16,000. “This year is a critical year. We’re an all-volunteer radio station, hoping to generate enough community support to build a new radio tower that will serve the community and expand the reach of the radio signal,” Musheno said. “We hope to connect with other local radio stations in the area to promote the medium, since research shows it’s still the number one way to reach new listeners, and Williamsport

County Hall Corner Resource Managing the Future By Larry Stout
C
hristmas generates fun, joy, cheer, and a whole lot of garbage! Old toys get discarded, container boxes get piled to the ceiling, and it all has to go somewhere. In yesteryear, we called it a junkyard. After that, we called it a landfill. Today, it is known as resource recovery facility. But, no, these are not all the same thing. When I went with my father in the 1960s to the “dump,” we piled up our junk in the trunk and tossed it in onto a big pile located outside of town. Then my dad would spend a couple of hours rummaging through the junk that others threw away to take back home. My mother used to complain that Dad would often bring back more than he dropped off! By the 1980s, many communities had developed landfills, and there were hundreds of these throughout the state. But concern for the environment grew stronger, and solid waste became one of the most highly regulated industries in the Commonwealth. Today there only 48 resource recovery facilities in Penn-
sylvania. In some ways, community activism had something to do with Lycoming County’s position as a leader in this field. The roots go back to 1942, and the government takeover of the land and eviction of nearly 300 families in the area currently home to the Allenwood Federal Correctional Complex, the Lycoming County Resource Management Services, and the White Deer Golf Course. There was bitterness generated from that eviction and the broken promise by the government that the farmers could reacquire their confiscated properties after the war. When rumors arose in 1972 about a “sanitary landfill” being proposed in the same region, a group was formed named the

BURIAL GROUND Choice of your final resting place is a deeply personal matter that may well go beyond a traditional cemetery featuring upright gravestones arranged in rows. Originally situated near churches and other places of worship, traditional cemeteries are likely to be rich in monuments, wrought-iron gates and fences, and other architectural features. There may also be mausoleums for above-ground burial. More recently, memorial parks began to make their appearance about 75 years ago. This type of cemetery is known for its vast expanses of lawn, flowering beds, and trees. Burial places are marked by bronze memorials that lie flush with the ground. The resultant effect is that of a green park that invites quiet contemplation of nature and life. One other important consideration when planning a funeral pre-need is where the remains will be buried, entombed or scattered. In the short time between the death and burial of a loved one, many family members find themselves rushing to buy a cemetery plot or grave - often without careful thought or a personal visit to the site. area residents have their water checked annually. Yet, even the best facilities have a lifespan, and the one in Lycoming County is due for completion in 2032 at the current tonnage rate. The last land space, identified as Field 12, is in preparation now. Actually, it has been worked on for the past nine years, because this is how long it takes for the state’s environmental protection approval process for a new site. The county just approved a bid for the first purchase necessary for the preparing of the new field, some 71,000 tons of stone base fill. To get some idea of how much this is, imagine a box that is
three feet by three feet by three feet, and it is filled with these stones. If you had to fill the county’s purchase into these cubic yard boxes and stacked them on top of each other, it would reach thirty miles into the sky! But before the stones are applied, there will be ten layers of liners put down first. The ground itself serves as an excellent base, as there is 100 feet of clay as topsoil. (In the seventies, that alone was considered ‘liner’ enough). But the base of clay is then supported with heavy-duty liners such as rubber felt and high density polyethylene (think plastic milk jugs, only much, much thicker).
The public can help manage the future by increased recycling. Yes, it takes a little more work to separate your garbage, but if more is recycled, it means less tonnage in Field 12. As technology increases, perhaps the Lycoming County Resource Management Services could even make it to the mid-century, 2050 and beyond. But even if it only hits its expected lifespan, the county has set aside funds to monitor the site for the next thirty years past its closure. The next generation will have to begin to develop what they will do with their garbage — this generation has figured it out quite well.

White Deer Valley Citizens Committee. This committee and others that came out after it served as a watchdog for the next two decades — ensuring that whatever plans the county had for that area, they were going to have to keep their promises. And, indeed, they have. The Lycoming County Resource Management Services opened in 1978 and has more than met the demands of the Federal EPA, Pennsylvania DEP, and the local citizenry. Daily monitoring is done from every part of the facility, covering points such as water wells, under drains, leachate lagoons and detection zones. In fact, even

you down, will give you a renewed sense of energy. Once you’ve cleared out your space, keep it clean by having daily, easy-to-accomplish chores, like wiping down counters, vacuuming the living room, or simply picking up and making the bed. Keeping things tidy here and there each day will make you feel more productive and is so much easier than spending an entire Saturday scrubbing your sinks and floors. Lastly, spread the love. One way to turn around your stressful and negative energy is to project kindness and positivity toward others. This is easier than you may realize. Simply, saying “please,” “thank you,” “have a nice day,” and looking people in the eye when you speak will foster connection and promote kind-heartedness. The more genuine kindness you offer to others, the more genuine kindness you’ll see in return. You can take it a step further by offering praise freely and widely. It costs nothing to let others know when they do a good job or are having a good hair day. Of course, you want to be genuine, so try to find something nice to say in the hopes that others will recognize the good in you. Hopefully, this coming year will find more of us feeling less stressed and acting more kindly to each other.

and loved ones. Don’t think of this as adding tasks to your day, but more like replacing less productive behavior with more feel-good activities. So, instead of scrolling through your phone after dinner, pick up a book, or a magazine, and read a bit. Instead of flipping back and forth between reality shows, take five-to-ten minutes to call a friend or loved one to see how THEIR day went. Switch out eating dinner in front of the TV to eating at the table and/or doing a family project. The idea is to be more mindful and find a more positive outlet for stress. If you do end up in front of the TV, don’t be hard on yourself (again, self-kindness) but be sure to cuddle with a loved one, or your pet, to soak up some feel-good snuggles. Once you’ve changed up your mental space, try tackling your physical space with some decluttering in 2018. Cleaning out your desk or a closet may seem like a daunting and stressful task, but a little organization goes a long way regarding aesthetic, emotional, and mental benefits. And it doesn’t have to happen all at once. Dedicate ten minutes or an hour each week to sort through clothes, books, papers, etc., and get rid of what you don’t use. Keeping only the items that bring joy and ease to your life, while discarding things that weigh

The Jaded Eye…
My Vibe on Viper
M
y first encounter with a Dodge Viper wasn’t exactly a pleasant one; I burned my one leg on the red-hot side exhaust that left a searing red scar for at least a week. But to be honest, using the words “pleasant” and “Viper” in the same sentence is impossible. This thing is, was, and always will be, a crude, fast adult toy for people who crave big engines, big tires, and big performance numbers. However, I must inform you the Viper is no more. They ceased production several months ago. It was built in limited quantities from 1992 till 2017. So what’s my take on this? I mean the average person could care less. I am not average, I am an auto enthusiast, and this car is about as average as you having a pet aardvark. Thus, do I shed tears over the passing of an American icon, or do I shovel dirt on the grave of a snake that never warmed up to me? Just scorched my tender skin! Mixed feelings, actually. I feel bad for the 67 employees who were directed elsewhere within the Chrysler Corporation after the 392,000 square foot Connor Avenue assembly plant in Detroit was closed. They only built
eight or nine cars per day, but these venomous machines were practically hand built, and they enjoy a cult-like following. Never inexpensive (the current one has a base price of $87,895 before options) the last series of this model featured an aluminum V10 engine with 645 horsepower. That equates Gerry to 0-60 times in less than Ayers five seconds and a top speed hovering near 190 mph. In other words, you could leave late and arrive very early to practically any destination you picked. Unless the police picked you off first. In 1992, when the voluptuous Viper made its debut, I was 30. Prime candidate to pursue one at that stage in life. However, I didn’t have Viper posters adorning my walls. I did read every test on the vehicle — the early production models didn’t offer air conditioning and had side curtains that “popped in and out” instead of windows. This machine could chew you up and spit you out if you didn’t respect its capabilities and handling quirks. Although the early roadsters didn’t light my wick, the 1996 and up coupe models did. “Beautiful and brutefal,” I said to

myself when I first saw it in the flesh at a car show. The car resembled the 1965 Shelby Daytona coupe, which is no bad thing. Still, this version remained out of reach for me, as I didn’t want to sell or trade any of my toys at the time. It’s worthy to note these were “niche vehicles”, built for a special person (driver). The design and “market be damned” thinking mentality behind the Viper was totally off the wall, nonconventional. They took a risk on this thing. The Chrysler accountants (bean counters) must have choked when presented with initial sales goals, costs, and production glitches. Big companies hate ramping up for small volume specialty vehicles. Many times they feel it isn’t worth the hassle even though these “halo” cars draw people into showrooms and stir excitement. You may not purchase a Viper, but hey, that Caravan is family friendly! The appeal in a car like the Viper is “going against the grain.” You might be the only person in town owning and driving one. With that in mind, the cost of admission is easier to swallow. The Viper’s lack of appeal for me became readily apparent after I started to sample other exotic cars. Cars that were just as quick, as flashy, as rare, but light years
ahead in overall refinement and build quality. Cars that wouldn’t beat me up with a back-breaking ride. And, ahem, burn my leg! If I blindfolded you and took you for a ride in a 2001 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 (or 4) or turbo, then strapped you in a 2001 Viper coupe ACR you might feel the Dodge’s interior is “penalty box.” However, just like camping, some folks like “roughing it.” More power to you. No pun intended as these cars have plenty of that. No one ever argued if the Viper could meet performance objectives and provide a thrill ride. That was a given. But as potential buyers got older (and perhaps stiff-jointed), for their money they wanted a less plastic-y interior, less harsh ride and jounce, less noise, and better efficiency. This, and some other factors lead to the demise of a dream car that went into production. It was a road warrior that also could excel at any track. More than anything else, I lament the passing of the freethinking and risktaking that this car took to task. It’s product planning team, and design and engineering staff were truly “mad hatters.” Rebels with a cause. For that reason, the Viper shall be missed. R.I.P. to the snake that was always ready to coil!

ilk prices in Williamsport remained below the price ordered by the State Milk Commission to be effective January 1, dealers in the district disclosed. Opposition to the boost in price was made known Thursday night when dealers and producers joined forces in seeking a respite from the statewide order, which it is feared in this district would result in a loss to farmers and producers. The state board was said to be standing firm in its order to enforce the ruling, but local sources were unable to disclose just what action can be taken from Harrisburg against the local violation. Further developments from the state capital are expected today, or tomorrow, but their status was un-
determined. The sale price before change was 11 cents per quart. The state commission ordered that milk be sold at 12 cents per quart. Local objections are based on the fear of a loss in sales, and the fact that milk producers are now entering a period in which there will be a surplus of milk, following a shortage that was terminated about two weeks ago. Twenty of twenty-three dealers in this district met Saturday afternoon and agreed to continue their campaign against the increase. Farmers were reported organizing with some favoring and others rejecting to the proposed and ordered change. The contention by many is that receipts of farmers for milk in the Williamsport district will be reduced by 33 percent if the increase is followed.

smoke. Get the HPV vaccination. Some strains of HPV (human papillomavirus) can cause cervical cancer. Be sure to get the HPV vaccine if you fall within the recommended age groups as this vaccination reduces your risk for cervical cancer. For more tips on preventing HPV, talk with your primary care doctor. Get regular PAP and HPV tests. Based on your family history and past test results, your doctor will determine how frequently you receive these screenings. The PAP test is used to detect cervical cancer, and the HPV test can determine if you’ve been exposed to the HPV virus. After completing a four year residency in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, a gynecologic oncologist goes for an additional three to four years of intensive fellowship training. Research shows that patients with gynecologic cancers treated by a gynecologic oncologist have better outcomes, so if you are diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer, ask to be referred to a gynecologic oncologist. Gynecologic oncologists collaborate
closely with your medical care team to develop the best course of treatment, which may include complex surgical procedures as part of a customized treatment program carried out by medical oncologists and radiation therapists. Now more than ever, there are a variety of excellent options for the prevention, detection and treatment of all types of gynecologic cancers, but the most important steps are up to you—stay on top of regular wellness visits and screening tests, pay close attention to any sudden or subtle changes in your body, and if you receive a diagnosis of reproductive cancer, seek prompt treatment from a gynecologic oncologist. Dr. John Comerci is a gynecologic oncologist with UPMC Susquehanna and an associate professor with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is board certified in gynecology, obstetrics, and gynecologic oncology with clinical emphasis in OB/ GYN and surgical oncology. For more information on reproductive cancers or gynecologic oncology, call 570-3213300.

According to Forbes, the Southeastern Conference, a collective of universities that includes the University of Alabama and the University of Georgia, generated $375 million in television money alone in 2015, collecting another $140 million from football and basketball postseason play. While that’s a hefty chunk of change, and even more impressive when considering the SEC is just one of many conferences in college athletics, it pales considerably in comparison to the National Football League, which Forbes projected would surpass $13.3 billion in total
revenues in 2016. Such figures highlight the popularity of both amateur and professional sports. Hundreds of millions of people across the globe enjoy sports, and many are fond of gathering with fellow fans to watch their favorite teams play, whether in-person or on television. Viewing parties are a great way to watch the big game with fellow fans, and such gatherings don’t have to require all that much effort on the part of hosts. • Make it a potluck affair. Potluck affairs make perfect sense for sports viewing parties; so don’t be surprised if guests offer to whip up

some homemade guacamole or a buffet-style dish for the big party. Encourage this, asking guests to share what they’re bringing with other invitees so there are no duplicate offerings. • Vary the food and beverage menu. Chicken wings and beer might seem like go-to foods and beverages for the big game, but even sports bars are increasingly recognizing sports fans’ desire for healthy foods. It’s still acceptable to serve staples like wings, nachos, chips, and pretzels, but try to provide some healthy fare like celery and salad as well. Even whole-grain pretzels might be more enticing to guests watching what they eat. In addition, provide alternatives to alcohol, such as water, soda and juice, for guests who are abstaining. • Upgrade your television. Projection screens are go-to options for many avid sports fans, but projectors and screens may stretch some
sports fans’ budgets. A 4K ultra-HD television can be an affordable option depending on the size of the television, and such devices provide incredibly crisp pictures that can make sports fans feel as though they’re inside the stadium cheering on their favorite players. • Purchase a sound system. Today’s televisions are sleek and thin. While that saves space and provides more aesthetic appeal than the bulky televisions of yesteryear, thin designs leave little room for sound tech. As a result, it can be hard to hear what’s going on in the game without a sound system. Sound systems are relatively inexpensive; just make sure to purchase one that is compatible with your television. Sports viewing parties tend to be easygoing affairs that don’t require the level of planning of more formal gatherings.

The Roving Sportsman… A Tale of Two “Pops” – Continued ORRECTION: I need to begin this
C
segment with an apology to Wes Somits and his family, as he was actually 6 years of age when, in April of 2014, he and his father, Shawn, doubled on the spring gobblers — as pictured. We return to the story as Wes and his two grandfathers, or “Pop” as Wes called each of them, were heading out before daybreak in pursuit of a spring gobbler for the young enthusiastic hunter. They arrived at their blind under the darkness of an overcast that hid the stars, and it wasn’t long until Wes was sound asleep as the two veteran hunters continued to call to nearby turkeys
still on the roost. When a hen and three jakes finally approached their position, Wes was awakened and took steady aim on one of the gobblers. When the single shot rang out, the three hunters emerged from the blind and approached the dead bird. “Pop, I shot the beard off of it,” Wes exclaimed. “Yep, you’re right,” replied Scott, smiling all the while, knowing it had been a jake with a 3-inch beard and not a longbeard as Wes had thought. That fall, Scott and Wes stuck with it for three long days during the Junior & Senior Antlerless season, but Lady Luck did not smile upon them. They would have to wait
until the following spring to, once again, achieve success. The 2016 Youth Day for spring gobbler season found the 3 hunters once again inside a blind, but this time it was located in a woods overlooking a fallow field. The effectiveness of their calling was reduced by an ever-increasing wind throughout the morning and finally they left the blind and headed home. They had not travelled far when they spotted a gobbler strutting at the far end of the field. Quickly, they sat at the base of a large hemlock tree and began calling. The mature gobbler sounded back and began walking toward them, dragging two jakes along with him. As they crossed the field, they would occasionally drop out of sight, and then reappear. After what seemed like a very long time, they popped up in range
and Wes’ single shot rang out, dropping one of the gobblers. When reaching the bird, Wes shouted, “Pop, I shot the beard off again!” “No, Wes, you shot a jake,” Scott explained, as he tried to hide his smile recalling the similar incident the previous spring. Once again, the time they spend hunting in the fall Junior & Senior antlerless season proved fruitless for them, but it did not dampen anyone’s hopes for the next time they could go hunting. After scouting a new area and seeing multiple groups of turkeys there, the 3 hunters slipped into their blind for the 2017 Youth Day with high hopes. At daybreak, birds flew from their roost trees, landing 100 yards away, but slowly fed away from the hunters. Throughout the morning, more than a dozen birds, both hens and gobblers passed by, but could not be

THREE ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR Every new year we make resolutions and promise we’ll get things in order. This is also a good time to make sure your documents meet your needs. Your Will is the basic estate planning document in which you name an executor who will settle your estate and in which you set forth how your estate will be distributed. Your Will may contain one or more trusts for the benefit of spouse, children, grandchildren or others. A bypass clause is especially important to protect against your estate passing to an institutionalized spouse. Most Wills do not have a bypass clause and that can be a grievous and expensive omission. Your Power-of-Attorney names someone to do your business for you if you are unable to do so. A well-drafted durable POA is imperative if you become a resident of a nursing home. Your Living Will states your preference as to whether or not you want extraordinary life-prolonging measures. With these three essential documents professionally prepared by attorneys experienced and knowledgeable in the issues facing older generations you can feel reasonably assured that you have in place the tools you will need to face the new year. We will review your essential documents for free to determine if they meet your needs. From all of us at Greevy & Shoemaker, best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year!

Grandfather “Pop” Somits proudly helps display his 10-year old grandson Wes’ beautiful 9-point buck! he had practiced and gently squeezed the trigger. The 110-grain Core-Lokt bullet hit its mark and the deer came to rest in 50 yards. It was the culmination of a great season, where a young hunter, now 10 years of age, was able to spend quality time with his mentors, thanks to the Pennsylvania Mentored Youth Hunting Program. They created memories that will last a lifetime and provided an outstanding example of nurturing the interests of a new hunter. lured into shooting range. Hoping to change their luck, the 3 left the blind and headed toward the woods, when suddenly a mature gobbler stepped into view 80 yards away. The hunters dropped to the ground and began calling as the bird slowly walked their way, disappearing from time to time. At 20 yards, the gobbler’s red head popped up, but Wes could not see him from his angle. The bird looked and looked, then finally dropped behind the terrain and walked away – never to be seen again. Their change in luck would have to wait until deer season! The 2017 Junior & Senior antlerless season found the trio hunting at a grown up Christmas tree farm where they had scouted deer the weeks before. But at first light, their hopes were dashed when a 350-pound black bear appeared at 70 yards, walked to within 30 yards and then sat down and began to scratch an itch! Ten minutes after he finally walked away, a 7-point buck appeared and then in another 20 minutes a doe walked into view. As she paused broadside in an opening, a single shot from Wes’ Ruger American Youth Model .243 dropped her on the spot. Success! As if to top that off, Wes and Pop Somits were able to go buck hunting on Wednesday of the second week of the season at an infrequently-hunted 200 acre property. Throughout the morning, they saw 20 to 30 does, usually in groups of five or six, and finally a 4-pointer and (2) 6-pointers — but not within a safe shooting distance. After lunch, they spotted more does. Suddenly a nice 9-pointer walked into view, passed through several openings and then began to trot. As it passed through the last opening, Wes swung his rifle in front of the deer as

important is being safe. Already during that brief cold spell in late November a fisherman in western Pennsylvania jumped the gun and went out on ice that wasn’t safe; they were unable to get to him before he disappeared under the ice — a tragic mistake. we watch or check on our favorite lakes on a regular basis as the ice begins to form. If we can’t check on a lake ourselves, we will check with someone who lives near our destination lake to find out what’s happening. It’s important to remember that all lakes do not freeze in the same uniform fashion — wind, water movement, water depth, springs and even ducks frequenting open spots in ice can cause differences in ice thickness when a lake finally “freezes over”. Fluctuating air temperatures can be a problem, as can rain. As I write this piece, we are in the middle of at least a solid week of temperatures that will not exceed the 20s in the daytime and will likely be in the single digits at night with little or no wind; this scenario will no doubt produce safe ice on a number of lakes.
Once the ice appears to be safe, don’t assume that because there are fishermen on the ice that all routes to their location are safe to travel. After the season is well underway, and the temperatures have been below freezing for a prolonged period that may be the case, but exercise caution in the early season. A number of my ice fishing buddies and I own special winter outfits (jacket and bib overalls) that will keep you afloat even if you go through the ice; you will get wet, but the suit will keep you afloat making rescue much more likely. The suits are marketed by Ice Armor, out of the Pittsburgh area. If you are new to the activity of ice fishing you probably don’t own such a suit so I would highly recommend you wear a life jacket — especially in that early season.
Once you are sure the ice is safe, you may want to remove the life jacket, but I know some guys who keep it on the entire time they are on the ice. In addition, ice fishermen should invest in a pair of ice spikes; you wear them around your neck, and when you pull them apart it exposes two protruding spikes that can be driven into the ice to help you pull yourself out if you go through. I would also recommend that someone in your group of ice fishermen have a length of rope along with them in case you need to pitch it to someone who has gone through. This may all sound a little scary, but if done properly, ice fishing can be done safely and it’s a lot more fun than most people realize. The fish are top notch eating as well.

to the thickness and other factors should also come under consideration. Assuming ice is hard and relatively clear throughout four inches, it is considered safe for a single angler. I would not suggest a large group gathering in a small area and close to each other on four inches — especially if some of the group exceed 200 pounds — with equipment and clothes that includes most of us. Six or seven inches is considered safe for ice boating and other group activities; actually, five inches will support an 800-pound snowmobile (illegal on our ice by the way), and eight inches will support a 2,000-pound car (also illegal on our ice). In addition to paying close attention to ice thicknesses, something we serious ice fishermen do each winter is “monitor” how the ice freezes as well. By that I mean

our family gathering. As I mentioned last week, sports gifts have always been a part of our gift giving regiment. This year was much of the same, but a gift from son Doug was very much cherished by this baseball nut. Somewhere in his travels, Doug crossed paths with a gentleman, and the conversation turned towards baseball. Doug soon learned that the man had in his possession the paperwork application made by Ted Williams for aviation training in the U.S. Naval Reserve/Marine Corps Reserve signed by the Red Sox slugger May 22, 1942. That meeting resulted in a framed,
matted three-page copy of the baseballsignificant document waiting for me under the Christmas tree. As a Red Sox fan, I was thrilled — all the result of a chance meeting and baseball conversation. Santa also left a new fungo bat for Doug, a portable spectator chair for Jean, a heater for his hunting trailer for son-inlaw Ric, a soccer ball for granddaughter Maddy and for grandsons Cole, Chase and Tucker gifts of Eagles gear, Penn State apparel, and a TCU sweatshirt that was immediately modeled for all to see. Driving back from the Harrisburg area on a cold, crisp Christmas Night
MURRAY
I couldn’t help reflecting back upon all the joys sports have provided in my life. There have been championship moments, crushing defeats, and laughs and memories that have made it all very much worthwhile. Over the years, the gifts received have been very much appreciated, but even more so is the thoughtfulness and love of sports that we have all been able to enjoy together over the years. So whatever sports may be your main dish, take the time to share with those around you and cherish the time you have to do so. May 2018 be a championship season for you and yours!

balls in his garage, and he set about the task of using some of those old balls to fill the holes in the yard and then covered them up with dirt. Sometime later after a rainy spell, his wife discovered golfs balls scattered about the yard. She asked Andy what the balls were doing there. He said, “I did what you told me and tried to fill in those holes with golf balls.” Her response – “I told you to fill them with moth balls!” With apologies to Andy – true story and hearing aids are now in place. For many of us, sports are constantly entwined into our daily lives. Such was the case once again this Christmas at

to lose with anything. Lefty Travis was an extraordinary man, and there was a very large turnout for his services. Exactly as I expected. Yes, there were several attorneys in the house, and that was only an attempt at some bad humor above. I personally thought it was hilarious. So I marveled at the many faces in the crowd from all different walks of life. It was a brutally cold night, and it was still standing room only. Lefty Travis was quite unique and influenced many — young and old. He always had time for others, and it’s rather difficult to explain how BIG this man’s impact was. My heart goes out to his lovely wife Pam and daughter Kelli. I will continue to pray for them and the rest of the extended family. I am absolutely crushed, and words don’t do any justice. Lefty was 73 years old. Life is way too short kids — never take it for granted. Please remind folks just how much you care on a daily basis. Those pre and postgame chuckles will never be the same without Lefty. Rest easy pal, and you will be missed. Much love my friend. Cheers.

winner down the line in a major tournament. Oh to have one more conversation with an old friend. Lefty was one of the greatest to ever ball at Lycoming College. The tough power forward just dominated the paint. He finished his career with 1,413 tallies and an astonishing 1,124 rebounds. Travis’ senior campaign was sensational. He averaged 23 points and 15.5 boards. Travis filled the stat sheet. Lefty’s marks are still among the all-time bests. He is in the College Hall of Fame and was one of only four Warrior hoopsters to be named to the Middle Atlantic Conference’s All-Century Team. Lefty continued to play hoops after college in the PA amateur circuit. He would often recruit the area’s best to win lots of hardware. Travis also loved the game of tennis, and was very successful there too. Lefty had a big first serve and competed in the PA State games. Again, I do not have the time or space to tell you about his tennis titles, but I am pretty sure his 50-foot racket toss over the fence at Brandon Park is a record that still stands today. Lefty was such a competitor and didn’t like

e all made it. The final days of 2017 have fallen off the page, and new calendars are being hung as the New Year opens. Weight loss, a better version of you, and plenty more resolutions will be made and met or broken throughout the year. Before we dive too far into the future, let’s take a look back at the year that was 2017 and some of its big-
gest sports moments. Montoursville’s Gavin Hoffman had every reason to believe that his 2017 season would be special. Hoffman is full of confidence, but it never comes off as being cocky. Hoffman is driven. Hoffman’s year was one of constant achievement. He won the district title with ease and posted three consecutive technical falls en route to his second consecutive State Championship.
15-0 decision to quickly advance in the 195-pound bracket. Hoffman next took on Blairsville’s Jerry Moore, who had lost just four matches prior to taking on Hoffman. Moore performed a little better than Herr but ultimately fell by a technical fall as Hoffman finished with a 20-4 win. Hoffman’s final challenge came against Anthony Walters from Bishop McCort. Hoffman would pick up his third technical fall to claim his second State Championship for Montoursville. Another area athlete that made a

As the State Championships opened in Hershey, Hoffman had his eyes on a second title. He might have caught some in the field by surprise as he captured his first title, but this year’s run was going to Brett have to take place as the Crossley favorite. Margarita Little League in California, won the game 9-8. The final score was something to play for, but the chance to play on Little League’s first field was even more special for the players and coaches. This is something Little League should continue to promote. The fall season was highlighted by plenty of standout performances, but one game stands out over them all. When Lewisburg entered Loyalsock for the District 4 playoffs, it was a heavy underdog. Despite the odds, Lewisburg entered the game and scored the first 21 points to take a big lead on the Lancers. Lewisburg called an onside kick that helped it gain a possession, but Loyalsock quickly made a comeback in the third to win 35-24. The Lancers connected on scoring plays of 73, 90, 47, and 74 in the third quarter to pull away. Hunter Webb ran a ball in from 90 yards out, and Connor Watkins, who completed two long touchdown passes, returned a touchdown 47 yards. The game seemed to give Loyalsock something extra as it defeated Danville a week later to claim the District 4 Championship.

big impression at the state level was South Williamsport’s, Katie Jones. Actually, she made her impression felt at the District level where she broke the Class AA State record for the pole vault with a mark of 13-07. Jones then entered the State Championships as the favorite and didn’t disappoint as she captured her second consecutive championship. Jones, when healthy, was a must watch on the track and field scene. She won nearly every event she participated in, and she finished the season as the top pole-vaulter in the state. As the summer season came to a close, it was hard to look any further than the Little League World Series. The two-week event is the top attraction in Williamsport and offers the city a chance to put its charm on display. The gem tucked into the gem was Little League crossover games that featured games on local Little League fields.
