here within the borders and economy of Pennsylvania. There are several programs that would love to have the opportunity, and the big check, the GSU Panthers got for traveling to University Park. PSU gets three non-conference games per season. Two of three should be accounted for each year by rival Pitt and Temple. The Owls are a long time Nittany Lion foe and the return trip to play at Lincoln Financial Field in Philly is a great recruiting tool. That leaves us that one game each year against East Anywhere State or Coastal South Dakota. Whatever school can be added in on the schedule, given a big payday for their efforts — and are usually never heard from again. Fill this week of the season in with Villanova, Penn, Lafayette, Lehigh and yes, Bucknell. Give them the bright lights of Beaver Stadium and the National publicity. Not to mention that $1.3 million to be used for their program right here in our great State of Pennsylvania. Results of the game will be the same, a one-sided PSU victory — and believe me the list of PA opponents is right on par with the scheduling of this nonconference match-up. Kent State, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Indiana St. and Akron are some recent visitors to Happy Valley. I recall Brown and Coastal Carolina also making the

trip not so long ago. I must add Coach Franklin and his team only play the schedule they’re given. It is up to the athletic director and school administration to provide the schedule. What a great way during tough economic times to not only keep $1 million plus in PA, but also give a fellow Pennsylvania team a shot at that “Hoosier Moment” every small school dreams about. Also, outside the Big 10 schedule, all nonconference games will take place right here in the Keystone State — what a great way to market Penn State football and keep the dollars in our institutes of higher learning. Whether it’s PSU, Lycoming, Lock Haven or your favorite high school program, get out and enjoy football on Friday Nights and on those special autumn Saturdays. What a great way to spend time with family and friends. And I agree with my Dad, Saturdays this time of year are just a little better with a Nittany Lions win. God Bless America.

From the Editor…

So what can we do to help? The first answer is the most obvious. Donate. Be it to an organization like Feeding America or staying local by donating to the Central PA Food Bank, St. Anthony’s Center, or the Salvation Army’s Food Pantry. The Williamsport Area School District has also taken steps in the fight against childhood hunger with their Backpack Program. Funded by the Williamsport Education Foundation, and in conjunction with the Central PA Food Bank, this program allows kids to take home backpacks with food for weekends and holidays. All of these organizations are working in the fight against hunger locally and can always use both food and financial donations. If you can’t donate that way, consider donating your time. Fiftyone percent of food programs rely on volunteers. You can contact the Central PA Food Bank at www.centralpafoodbank.org or by calling (570) 321-8023. St. Anthony’s Center can be reached at (570) 3262244, and you can reach the Salvation Army at 570-326-9187. We live in the highest food producing country in the world. No one should be going hungry, so let’s all do what we can to help.

eptember is Hunger Action Month. It was established by Feeding America in 2008 when they decided it was time for a nationwide push to get involved with the hunger crisis across the country. During September, people everywhere help to feed the needy in their neighborhoods and country, working to ensure that the 48 million people who live with hunger every day can get some relief. Going hungry is a problem for more than just adults. Children all over the country go to school without a proper breakfast, leading to difficulty focusing on their education, alertness, and generally performing well. Hunger affects all sorts of people. Many people across the country are just one job loss or medical emergency short of not being able to put food on the table. In Pennsylvania, one in eight adults, and one in six children struggle with hunger. That’s almost 1.7 million people, almost 500,000 of which, are kids. Kids who go hungry are at more risk of repeating grades in school, experiencing developmental impairments in areas like language and motor skills and more likely to have behavioral and social

problems. Children struggling with hunger come from families who are struggling, too. Children facing Steph hunger often grow Nordstrom up in a family where a parent or parents also face hunger. A family of four facing hunger may be in need of 34 additional meals a month simply because they don’t have money to buy enough food. Children and adults aren’t alone in the hunger struggle. Our senior citizens are also working to balance bills and medical care with food. According to Feeding America, 64 percent of seniors they serve are choosing between food and medical care. Feeding America also notes that “The rate of hunger among seniors aged 60 and older has increased by 68% since 2001, a lingering effect of the 2008-09 recession. In fact, the number of seniors struggling with hunger is projected to increase by another 50% when the youngest of the baby-boom generation reaches 60 in 2025. And hunger pains can be increasingly painful as we age.”

500,000 people during the course of the Fair,” Reichart declared. He also added to help ensure the safety of fairgoers, security has been beefed up and additional physical barriers have been constructed that will prevent unauthorized vehicles from coming onto the fairgrounds. He pointed out that the Bloomsburg Fair is probably the largest fair, in area, in the state of Pennsylvania, though it is not in terms of numbers attending it. According to Reichart, there will be more than 1,400 animals on display and the milk produced by the cows at the fair will be converted into cheese, which will be sold in packets on site at the fair. “One of the more interesting educational aspects about the fair this year is that the STEM programs from eight area schools will competing for a $10,000 prize in an educational project involving water,” Reichart said. Fair officials say they have an outstanding line up at their Toyota Grandstand. There are a ton of great bands and entertainment available all Fair-long. Royal Bengal Tigers will do shows at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. daily — located behind the Barton House (Free). The Free Stage has acts performing daily. Granpa Cratchet and the Brass Effect Band will be strolling daily on the fairgrounds. Be sure to see the “Fair by Air” with the Heritage Rotors Helicopter rides (located by Gate 5). If you want a little history, be sure to check out the Caleb Barton House. There will be guides every day from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and they will be giving away free seeds. Reichart said the Fair has bounced back well from the catastrophic flood that happened in 2011 that severely damaged the fairgrounds and that forced the cancellation of that year’s Fair. “Last year we had pretty good attendance and if the weather cooperates and we have decent weather, there is no reason that we should not be able to attract at least

crowd estimated at between six and eight thousand persons gathered on the Hepburn Street side of the SunGazette building last night to hear the megaphone report of the Dempsey-Tunney fight by rounds. When the flash came over the wire that Tunney had won the decision and the megaphone man made the announcement the crowd fairly went wild, some going as far as to throw their hats and caps in the air and yell at the tops of their voices. The crowd started to gather as early as six o’clock. The first arrivals came on a large motor truck which was loaded to capacity with boys,

it was parked along the curb. The boys standing on the truck, held this position all during the fight. Many other motor cars arrived, parking as near the building as possible. The parked cars reached several blocks on Hepburn Street. By 9 o’clock the crowd completely covered the available spaces on Hepburn Street between Edwin and Fourth Street east and west as far as the voice of the megaphone could be heard. The roofs of several buildings in the vicinity also had capacity crowds. In the crowd on the street were numbers of women who seemed to be as interested in the fight as were the men. The local police department rendered good service in handling the crowd.

County Hall Corner Here Comes the Flood By Larry W. Stout

T

he horrific flooding that occurred in Texas and Florida recently is a grim reminder to residents of Lycoming County that we have a major river flowing along much of our population centers, and it has reaped massive destruction in the past. Ironically, the same river that made possible the lumber boom that literally put Williamsport on the map, has also been a major worry since the city’s founding. Over the past century alone, the river has risen over 20 feet of its

height (crest) over 22 times. These are what are considered “moderate” floods, but there have been two major floods, measured by water crests 30 feet and over, occurring in 1936 and 1972. Flooding does not just come from the Susquehanna. Lycoming County lies entirely within the Susquehanna River Basin, one of four major drainage basins in Pennsylvania. Over 2,200 miles of streams traverse through Lycoming County, and as recently as 2012 and 2016, severe storms and the resultant flooding caused significant damage to many structures,

roads, and bridges. In fact, these events are attributed to $30 million in total property and infrastructure damage. No one can stop the storms, but it is possible to better prepare for them. One of the first places is the 20-mile-long levee system that protects 40 percent of the $2.7 billion in real estate in the City of Williamsport, Armstrong Township, DuBoistown Borough, South Williamsport Borough, Loyalsock Township, and Old Lycoming Township. The Lycoming County Commissioners recently approved a 50 percent cost sharing toward upgrading and improving this critically important overflow embankment edifice. And continually improve they must, because if the levee were ever to become decertified, as happened at the Natomas Levee near Sacramento, California, the results would be economically devastating to homeowners and businesses. The county is staying at least one step and maybe even two ahead of possible problems because of Josh Schnitzlein, Lycoming County Hazard Mitigation Planner. Some people think that those who devote themselves to planning are bookish types who hunch over maps and reports all day. Josh is a young man who might appear on the surface to fit that description, but nothing could be further from the truth. He is a member of the Maryland National Guard, and for amusement, he runs in ultra-marathons. (For those unacquainted with the term, it is double and even triple the distance of a plain-ordinary-26.2 mile marathon!)

A man as strong and smart as Josh Schnitzlein is just the person that Lycoming County needs to look ahead and watch for the worst. He defines his job as seeking to reduce the threat to property, life, and social well being within Lycoming County due to natural disaster. Josh’s approach is not the traditional emergency planning, which is reactive (dealing with ways to deal with a problem after it has happened), but rather to be proactive in hazard planning. This could involve structural and nonstructural solutions. The levee is an example of a structure, but it is obviously quite expense. Schnitzlein works with local, county, state and federal agencies in these big-project areas. But he also works on nonstructural efforts on mitigation through better zoning, public awareness, public education, or training local municipal officials on policies and regulation. He suggests that local homeowners who live in flood plains explore every possible option available to them. For those interested in knowing more, the Lycoming County website is, as always, an incredible resource for information. Start at lyco.org, go to headings at the top and click on “Departments” and from there, go to “Planning and Community Development.” On that page, go to the left column and click on “Hazard Mitigation.” It might have taken a few clicks to get there, but it is worth it, as there is a wealth of information available, especially under the heading “Flood Ready.” That is a good slogan for all of us; we should be “Flood Ready!”

ecently, this area lost one its grand ladies, a woman committed to the philanthropic, charitable and social affairs of this area, Charlotte “Honey” Person, wife of John E. Person, Jr. and mother to John III, Mike, Tom and the late Dave Person. She was 98 years old. It is hard to imagine any projects involved with the civic good of this area during the past 60 or so years that she did not have at least a small hand in.

RUPERT’S SPECIALTY MEATS

Her church, Pine Street United Methodist Church, knew her dedicated service, and was a better place because of it. One of the organizations she was most active in was the Junior League, and for many years you could always count on her to be at the forefront of supporting any of their projects for the betterment of the community. Her service on the boards of various civic organizations is too long to list, so I won’t try.

But Honey Person was much more than a dry recitation of accomplishments or organizations belonged to, she was a living, breathing person who was genuinely dedicated to the betterment of others and loved, and was loved, by others. Perhaps the group she lavished the greatest amount of love and devotion on was her own family. She was uncommonly supportive of her children’s, her grandchildren’s and her greatgrandchildren’s activities. Seldom was there was a sporting event, a recital or some other activity that she and her husband, “Jack,” failed to attend. They could always depend on her loving presence and support at all of these events. According to her son Mike, no one knows for sure how she got the nickname, “Honey,” adding that name goes all the way back to her childhood. I can only speculate that it was because she had such a sweet, generous and wonderful disposition and that others noticed and were warmed by her uncommon friendliness and generosity. I don’t think many who knew her would argue with that theory. I don’t think I can find anyone who did not like Honey. In addition to attending her family’s various activities, Honey was active in the cultural life of the Williamsport area. She subscribed to and was an avid attendee of

the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, and she attended numerous other shows at the Community Arts Center and any other activity of its type in the area. She and her husband enjoyed attending the Williamsport Crosscutters baseball games. I can attest to this personally, having sat near Jack and Honey for more than 10 seasons at Bowman Field. They were also devoted attendees at all major Williamsport Area High School sporting events. Honey loved to be where the action was. She and her husband were also very loyal to friends. When I lost my dear wife, Mary, three years ago, they were wheeled into the viewing by their son Tom and his wife, Marsha. It was probably the most poignant episode of that sad night for me. Even now, I get choked up when I think about it. When you consider the loss of someone like Honey, you of course are saddened, but her life should be celebrated. She really did have a wonderful, rich and full life and left a loving and positive impact that will linger long after this sad time of her passing. I can think of Honey now in her heavenly home having an animated conversation with her beloved son Dave and my Mary, trying to organize the next activity for the civic improvement of heaven. As Shakespeare wrote and is appropriate for Honey, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.”

‘She’s Always Going to Have a Part of Me’ Teacher Aide to Donate Kidney to a Colleague, Friend

A

s friends, they’re a perfect match. They share the same name, same place of employment and — come Thursday — will share in a life-changing experience based on a match discovered at a much deeper level to serve a much higher purpose. One of them will donate a kidney to the other. Jenn Gray and Jenn Pick are paraprofessionals at Williamsport Area Middle School, working as teacher aides in the building’s eighth-grade science and world history classrooms. It’s here the pair met years ago, and the track of their friendship developed. “We just always hit it off,” said Gray, who is donating one of her kidneys to Pick. Late last spring, Gray answered a call Pick put out on Facebook in search of a donor, a posting that shocked Gray, as her otherwise taciturn colleague and friend never mentioned the need or the health issue behind it. The search began about a year ago when Pick qualified for a transplant based on the status of her treatment plan. Now 35, Pick said when she was 18, doctors discovered she was born with only one kidney, a condition that she’s been able to navigate with medications and a regulated diet, a regiment that has kept

Jenn Pick (L), will receive a kidney from Jenn Gray (R)

dialysis and other complications at bay. And, of course, her faith, too, which both women credit as the driving force behind the process to qualify Gray as a donor over the last several months. “If it’s meant to be me, it’s going to happen,” Gray said she remembered thinking when she decided to fill out the application. “She’s a great person,” Pick said. “Not many people do this. It was such a surprise.” “I don’t understand why more people don’t do it. She needs one (a kidney),” Gray said, adding, with a laugh, “and I have a spare.” Few events can draw friends and colleagues closer, but one thing is for certain on both a figurative and literal level: “She’s always going to have a part of me,” Gray said. The transplant surgery is scheduled for Thursday at Geisinger Medical Center.

the country are planning to use National Voter Registration Day to increase voter participation. Thousands of national, state and local organizations and volunteers will be the driving force behind National Voter Registration Day 2017. Partner organizations will coordinate hundreds of National Voter Registration Day events nationwide and leverage #NationalVoterRegistrationDay on all social media platforms to drive attention to voter registration and the midterm elections.

The effort’s website, www.nationalvoterregistrationday.org, provides a listing of National Voter Registration Day events across the country. Founded in 2012, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual movement when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right — the right to vote. More than two million Americans have registered to vote on this day since the inaugural National Voter Registration Day.

GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION!

You’re ! Invited

The Roving Sportsman… Final Preparations By Jon Pries

W

ith just under two weeks to go until the opening day of our statewide archery deer season — Saturday, September 30th to be exact — there is still time for some important last-minute items you should consider. Inventory and check your equipment. Now, while you still have time, is when you should verify that you are not missing any items or need to replace some worn out gear. Next to your backpack, lay out and check your calls, lures, drag glove or rope, knife and bone saw, parachute chord, marking tape, Ziploc bags (for the heart and liver), wire or string for attaching harvest tag to ear of deer, a paperback book or magazine (to help you wile away the hours without nodding off and missing that buckof-a-lifetime that might be sneaking by!), and anything else you deem essential. Once checked, pack them into the backpack, then make a list

and place it on top of your backpack. The list is for the night-before items, such as food, snacks and plenty of water for hydration, raingear depending on the weather forecast, and last, but not least, is your cell phone — it might be your lifeline if you have an emergency or need help dragging out your deer. Practice, practice, practice. Even if you have been diligently shooting your bow up until now, spend time over the next week or so, shooting practice as much as possible. There is no substitute for shooting a lot and reaching the point where you are extremely comfortable with your shooting. The confidence you gain will allow you to be more relaxed and be more accurate in your shooting when the time comes to take that actual shot in the field. Practice shots from both standing and kneeling positions, and, if possible, practice shooting from a ladder stand or climber stand to better simulate what you will be doing in the woods. A few days before opening day —

If you normally take it somewhere, you might want to make a call to verify that your processor is still doing the work you like, and if not, you have time to locate another place to take your deer. If you do your own work, check now to make sure you have sufficient supplies, such as vacuum bags or material, freezer paper and tape, and all of the canning supplies if you enjoy canning some venison for later use. Finally, have you checked your freezer lately? A quick check now will make sure you have plenty of room for any new venison you may get this year. Mark your calendar to check your freezer next year several months before the season, so that you can clear out unwanted items well before the season begins. If you don’t know of a local church or charity where meat or other frozen items can be donated, go online and check out Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry — their website is www.fhfh.org. They coordinate the donation of venison to feed the less fortunate, and have a list of processors and coordinators who will help get the job done.

not the day before — do a final run through of your stands. Make sure no trees or limbs have come down that obstruct your shooting lanes, check for possible scrapes or rubs, check your trail cameras to verify the latest patterning of the deer you hope to see while hunting and make sure you identify the best way to get to your stands in the wee hours of the morning when there may be total darkness. Acorns are beginning to fall and soon the beechnuts will begin to drop as well. Food plots will continue to mature and become more palatable to the deer, and much of the field corn has not yet been picked by area farmers. All of this means that the preferred food sources of our whitetails will change throughout the season, thus having multiple locations of tree stands, blinds or hunting spots will be beneficial as these food preferences changes. You still have time to place an additional stand or two, but time is running out quickly. What will you do once you are fortunate enough to get a deer this season? Will you take it to be

jigs, giant swim baits (especially those with a tantalizing side-to-side action), spinners, and jerk baits. A few possibilities for musky include the Susquehanna River – North Branch, West Branch, and the Main Stem, Conneaut and Pymatuning lakes – Crawford County, Glendale LakeCambria County, Lake Arthur – Butler County, and Keystone Lake – Armstrong County. Looking for something closer to home? Try Cowanesque Reservoir in Tioga County. Steelhead Many anglers descend on the Lake Erie tributaries in the fall in hopes of intercepting a run of steelhead trout. There always seems to be adequate numbers of fish as the PFBC stocks 1 million juvenile steelheads each year. Popular streams include Walnut and Elk creeks, but there are other options. The clear, shallow water often encountered dictates the use of light line (most choose 4-lb. test) and small hooks/bait, lures, or flies. Marabou microjigs in a variety of colors are a top producer. These are typically fished in 1/80oz., 1/64oz., or 1/32oz., and tipped with a maggot. Fly fishermen opt for nymphs and egg patterns, or streamers when the water temperature is above the 50-degree mark, and the steelhead are more aggressive. May all your outings this fall be filled with good weather and great fishing. See you on the water.

structure, or off-points and drop-offs. Stripers Anywhere striped bass are found, there will be feeding frenzies in the fall. Be on the lookout for thrashing baitfish on the surface, driven there by hungry stripers. Large, popping lures, swimbaits, or popping bugs will get noticed by these voracious feeders. If the surface activity is sparse or nonexistent, fish the points, creek mouths, and dropoffs with crankbaits, spoons, swimbaits, or streamers. Destinations include Lake Wallenpaupack, Raystown Lake – Huntingdon County, Blue Marsh Lake – Berks County (both purebred and hybrid stripers), Lake Arthur – Butler County, Shenango Lake – Mercer County, among others. Musky Avid musky fishermen look forward to this time of year. The cooler weather seems to put the “fish of 10,000 casts” in a much more aggressive feeding mood. Live bait, or oversize lures and lots of casting and retrieving are the go-to ploys for catching musky. From the nearby West Branch Susquehanna River to multiple fisheries across the state, avid musky fishermen have many options. In lakes, it pays to concentrate your efforts in and around feeder creeks, especially if large enough to create a lake arm. In rivers, muskies can be found near tributary mouths, islands, downed trees, humps, and drop-offs. Effective methods include trolling or fishing tube

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

Don’t Put That Fly Rod Away Yet!

W

ith the hint of fall in the air and the leaves just beginning to hint of their upcoming color change many of the outdoor types are starting to think about hunting. The problem or maybe I should say “the blessing” of the upcoming fall season is that it offers both hunting opportunities and some great fishing opportunities as well. Believe me there is still some good trout fishing to be had and it’s highly unlikely you will have much competition on the streams. The low, clear trout streams of fall probably lend themselves well to the more gentle presentation of the fly rod. Even the fly fisherman however must take care not to spook the wary fall trout; remember these fish have been assaulted with all sorts of lures and tackle all spring and summer. Add to that the low, clear water conditions and you’ll soon find that stealth is a big part of success. This is not the time for bright colored hats and shirts, in fact I highly recommend wearing camouflage clothing and keeping a low profile. In addition move as quietly along the bank and in the2015 water possible. - Q2as - SCI Repair Services.ai 1 2015 - Q2 - SCI Repair Services.ai 1

Believe it or not a lot of our streams still hold some pretty good numbers of trout and in the fall these fish are often very willing feeders as they prepare for the long winter. True, the number of hatches is not like they were in the spring and early summer but trout can Ken still be taken on dry flies. BlueHunter winged Olives can come off all summer and even into fall and you can’t go wrong with sizes 16, 18 and 20. Another dry fly I wouldn’t want to be without is the old reliable Adams; I like to have some in sizes 14 and 16. I also like to have some caddis imitations on hand. I tie a brown caddis imitation on a size 14 or 16 with a medium brown body, no tail and deer hair back over the body for wings; on some I’ll wind on a couple of turns of grizzly hackle. Of course any number of terrestrials will do the job as well including black ants, beetles, crickets and grasshopper imitations. You’re not limited to just dry fly presentations for your fall fishing, subsurface flies can also still be effective. Nymphs are still available in many of the streams and a Gold-ribbed Hares Ear is not a1:26:47 bad choice, nor is a pheasant 4/14/2015 1:26:47 PM 4/14/2015 PM

panfish on a fly. Bass are starting to beef up before winter sets in and a wellpresented surface lure can supply some exciting action. I like a small cork or plastic body popper with a six or seven foot leader of at least six-pound test for bass. I have found a white popper or a frog pattern to work well. For panfish like bluegills I have had excellent results with a small, foam bumblebee pattern tied on about a size 10 or 12 extra-long hook. A couple of weeks ago I picked up 15 bass and bluegills using these varying patterns. Don’t put that fly rod away yet, there’s still some great fishing to be had before it’s time to hit the hard water.

Fall is also a good time to present some caterpillar imitations like a green inch worm-remember these critters have been falling into the water all summer and the trout are used to feeding on them. I also want to have an assortment of Wooly Buggers on handsome bead heads and some different body colors. This by no means is a complete list of what may be productive but it’s a good place to start. By the way, your fall fly fishing is not limited to just trout since fall is still an excellent time to catch bass and

WHY CAREGIVER AGREEMENTS ARE IMPORTANT One of the most expensive mistakes folks make when providing care for a parent, older family member or other loved one is providing that care without a properly drafted, timely caregiver agreement. As responsible, loving adults most of us volunteer to take care of our parents. After all, it’s the right thing to do. Under PA Department of Human Services guidelines it is permissible for caregivers to be compensated for care provided to an aging parent. In order for those payments to be acceptable to DHS a valid caregiver agreement must be in place. A qualifying caregiver agreement allows the recipient to reimburse expenses and compensate the caregiver for services provided. If the patient applies for Medicaid benefits within 5 years without an approved agreement any payments made will be viewed as gifts which will, if over $500 per month create a period of Medicaid ineligibility equal to the total of the payments. This unfortunate outcome can be easily avoided with a DHS-compliant caregiver agreement properly drafted by an experienced Elder Law attorney. To discuss caregiver agreements or other Medicaid planning methods please call Greevy & Shoemaker for a free consultation. Greevy and Shoemaker and their Certified Medicaid Planner™ are dedicated to working for you and your family to preserve your resources for future generations - for a reasonable fee.

encapsulate what this day was about. As the game was in progress, Little Leaguers made their way to the top of the Pirates dugout to interact with the big-league team. Francisco Cervelli walked to the top of the steps where the kids were stationed and took it all in as he talked to the young ballplayers about game situations, specific plays and more. The Pirates won the game 6-3 over the Cardinals behind Bell’s four-RBI performance, but the day will definitely remembered more for the way Major League Baseball was able to bring a kids’ game back to the kids. ‘It’s just growing the game. It’s the best place to do it, in Williamsport during the Little League World Series,’ McCutchen said. ‘It’s awesome that we’re able to come here and play this game.’ The day was an absolute success all around. Pitcher Trevor Williams tweeted, ‘10/10 would do it again. Would recommend to a friend.’ Other posts came from players such as former Little League World Series participant Max Moroff, who shared, ‘Had a lot of fun today! Brought back some memories…hopefully more to come.’ And there was this from Josh Harrison, ‘I had a blast today. Definitely a day to remember in Williamsport!’ Hurdle summed the event up best for all involved when he said postgame, ‘One of the highlights of my career…I was happy to be a part of it, humbled to be a part of it.’”

made their way through the crowds to cheer on the youngsters who were playing their games. Felipe Rivero and Elias Diaz led a group to Volunteer Stadium where their home country — Team Venezuela — was playing. Andrew McCutchen headed up to Lamade Stadium to watch a game from the bleachers as well as from the famous outfield hill. Every step of the way there were big leaguers interacting with Little Leaguers. That created some very cool moments as the team sat with young players watching the games, taking pictures and signing autographs. The Pirates visit to the complex lasted for about 90 minutes. It concluded with watching pre-game drills from the field and taking part in a pre-game ceremony before teams from Japan and South Korea squared off. The visit was short, but the impression it left on the Pirates was evident. ‘It’s cool to take a step back and realize there are kids all over the world playing this game, and we’re fortunate enough to play it as adults,’ first baseman Josh Bell told MLB. com. ‘It’s definitely an awesome experience.’ Later that night, the kids made their way over to Bowman Field, the home of the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New YorkPenn League, to watch the Pirates take on the St. Louis Cardinals in MLB’s very first Little League Classic. The game, played in such a small venue, made for an incredible scene as kids stood and waited for Pirates players to make their way through the crowd to visit or stop along the walkways to sign autographs and hand out baseball and batting gloves. One moment stood out and seemed to

But I made it. Literally five minutes before the South Tower fell. That’s one of the things that I think about a lot. Why did I walk out of that building? Without a scratch. I wasn’t married. No kids. I survived. Why me?” My old golf partner is left with a rather unique and incredible perspective. I can guarantee that he will NEVER FORGET. “Everyone remembers where they were,” Josh concluded. “It’s universal. I bet you anything that you can tell me where you were. Well, I was there. And I was one of the lucky ones.” Josh continues to work for Morgan Stanley in his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia. He and his lovely bride Stephanie are proud parents of a one-year-old son named Hayes. Josh is still polite and he still has a great short game. NEVER FORGET. #cheers.

Josh just graduated and this was his very first job. He was only 21 years old. “All of a sudden we heard a bang,” Josh continued. “All of this paper and debris was flying into our window. Things were falling down, but we had no idea what the heck was going on.” The first plane had just struck the North Tower and the 2,500 or so Morgan Stanley’s began evacuating the building. Josh believes he was on the 54th floor when he “felt” another catastrophic explosion only a few stories above. “It’s really hard to explain, but it was like a bomb went off. Tiles from the ceiling started collapsing. Papers were everywhere. Metal beams shot out of the wall. People were
