appy Fourth of July America! It seems like only yesterday I was downtown for the Bicentennial Parade. Wow, where have those 43 years gone? As you celebrate everything that is the United States of America on our 243rd Independence Day, please take a moment to reflect and give thanks. Take a knee for the only reason any American should, to thank God for the blessing of our Nation. Please take a moment to talk with your children and explain what the 4th of July is all about. Provide a quick history lesson to help them understand that all they view around them didn’t just happen by chance. That it has taken a constant commitment by the citizens of the United States of America to earn and protect our freedom. That those that serve in our military deserve our utmost respect and thank you, we all need to shoulder the responsibility of teaching our younger folks the true history of our great land. This just isn’t happening in our educational systems. Our accurate American history should be taught kindergarten through college graduation. We must teach our future generations our history, so they understand that selflessness empowers the people. That when one is selfless, they are truly working for the good. Our young folks, and at this point to me that’s anybody that’s under 35,
must understand with freedom comes great responsibility. Our way of life as intended must always be protected. That our military’s strength created by the success of our great land should only be used in the name of good. Make sure you get out and enjoy everything that is Independence Day in America. A day to celebrate Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness with your family and friends. Nothing says America like the great smell of hamburgers and hot dogs cooking on the grill, the summer salad of your choice, maybe a family softball or Wiffle ball game. How about some cornhole, KanJam or horseshoes? The pool, creek, or river of your choice for a little cooling down. Maybe some early morning fishing. And of course, fireworks. What would the Fourth of July be without fireworks and the smell of gunpowder in the morning and evening? That triggers the thought of possibly a little plinking or clay bird shooting. The sounds of country music or a baseball game on the radio in the background just enhances the 4th of July in America. As does the beverage of your choice straight from the icy confines of your Igloo cooler or maybe I should say Yeti in the world of today. Come on now, what’s more all American than that? All of the above-mentioned freedoms

and choices are provided by the Constitution of the United States of America and protected by our service men and women at home and around the world. We can never allow any operative of evil to threaten our future Independence Day celebrations. We all Jim know the normal cast of Webb, Jr. characters that includes Russia, China, North Korea, and the craziness of the Middle East. However, if Lady Liberty looked in a mirror, she would recognize that our greatest enemy is within our borders. The infiltration of our government by the creators of division that are willing to walk all over our constitutional rights. Those that want to change the very foundation of what America has been built upon. I have stated several times in previous articles that the hardworking everyday Democrats must take their party back. It has been hijacked by the extreme socialistic liberal left. I do not believe the views of the overwhelming majority of Democrats align with this element that is currently bullying the party. This was most evident during last week’s Democratic debate. I actually felt bad for former VP Joe Biden. What he had to endure by being on stage with these jack astronauts was painful to watch. As was the lack of respect he was shown.

My Grandfather was a staunch, wellrespected, well-connected Democrat. I was very blessed to have him in my life. When my Grandfather talked, you listened. He could teach you a lot by saying only a little. My Pappy’s Democratic Party was one who protected the workingman, especially those that made a living with their hands. One that believed government should create opportunity for the non-working to be trained and then work hard for a paycheck. His party believed our veterans should always be taken care of, as well as any American that couldn’t legitimately take care of themselves. Where has Pappy’s party gone? Obviously, my Father was on the other side of the political aisle. However, I remember thinking there wasn’t really much difference between a Republican and Democrat. At that point in American history, the biggest difference was how the taxpayers’ dollars should be spent. This was something I always imagined was solved, whether it was in Harrisburg or Washington, over a couple of drinks and dinner. When the elected would return to chambers, they simply compromised their beliefs for the good of our state and Nation. They truly had the best interest of our Country in their heads and hearts. One thing I can tell you for a fact. Both my Father and Grandfather’s Parties believed in Independence, not dependency. That is what our great Nation was founded for and intended to be all about. God Bless America.

he results are in and we have a winner for our Great American Cookout, Summer Prize Pack Giveaway! Congratulations to Phyllis Maietta from Loyalsock! She won an amazing Holland Grill from Lycoming Lawn and Garden, and $50 gift cards to Rupert’s Specialty Meats, Tony’s Deli and Frosty Beverage! Everything she needs to have an amazing 4th of July BBQ! Thank you so much to everyone who entered! I am still in shock at how many entries we received! As you know, for each entry we received we are making a donation to the VFW Veterans Benefit Office. After all the entries were counted (Thank you so much to Jaimie for counting and keeping track!) we had over 1,400 entries! WOW! Now because Jimmy likes round numbers and wanted to keep things simple, he agreed to round up to 1,500 and will be donating $1 per entry. So that’s $1,500 directly to the Benefits Office to help aid veterans in getting the help and services they need! What an awesome way to kick off the 4th of July! I feel I would be remiss if I didn’t help Ms. Maietta out with her first recipe for her new grill so I found a couple of great grill recipes she can try out this weekend! I’ve made this chicken before and it is fantastic and the veggie dish is on my must-try list for this week! Bourbon BBQ Chicken Breasts: Ingredients

Elliot the Warrior By Tim Hartzell
O
n August 17, 2015, Elliot Storms, a student at Central Elementary in South Williamsport, was diagnosed with Wilm’s Disease, a rare form of cancer that affects the kidneys of young children. For the past four years, Elliot and his family battled courageously against the disease. On June 20th, Elliot’s battle ended when Jesus took him by the hand and led him home to heaven. Elliot was 11 years old. Within Elliot’s chest beat the heart of a true warrior. Pain was no match for his relentless spirit. He was determined to enjoy life and family and friends—and nothing was going to get in his way. Nothing. He gave to life every ounce of strength he had to give, because that’s what warriors do. On June 25th, over 700 people gathered to pay tribute to the warrior, the size of the crowd revealing how his extraordinary life had impacted an entire valley. At the memorial service, the parents of his best buddy, Waylon, shared what they had learned from Elliot. Their words were so moving that I immediately knew I wanted to share them with the readers of the Weekly. Here is the tribute offered to Elliot by Erick and Julia Edler: When we asked our son Waylon about what to say about Elliot, he said “You would need all day to talk about Elliot.” So this will be the cliff note version. Nine years ago when two chubby-cheeked little boys met each other at church, little did we know how much they would change our lives. At some point, Elliot and Waylon came
up with a plan: we would adopt Elliot and Marc and Dawn would adopt Waylon, and then each family would have shared custody of the boys - one week at our house and one week at theirs. Although we never officially followed that plan, they truly became brothers. From Marc and Dawn being Waylon’s Sunday school teachers and leading him to ask Jesus to be his Lord and Savior, to Dawn watching Lydia and Waylon for four years before they were school aged, to never ending playdates, sleepovers and camping with the church, our lives became intertwined. We love Elliot just like he was Waylon’s brother. When we think about Elliot, we can think of so many great stories and so many good memories. We started to realize that hidden within all those stories and memories are things we can learn from Elliot. We could have way more than five, but since this is the cliff note version, here are the top five Elliot life lessons:

“WHY ARE TAPS PLAYED AT A VETERAN’S FUNERAL?” The playing of TAPS originated in 1862 during the Civil War by U.S. General Daniel Butterfield as a signal to end the day. The TAPS performance consists of 24 notes sounded out typically on a bugle or trumpet. Today, TAPS has become part of the military honors extended to families of Veterans who have died. The playing of TAPS is also a way for the soldier’s comrades to say goodbye. We Are Proud To Serve Those Who Have Proudly Served!

him about the ants he ate at the park with Waylon, or the chicken food he convinced our daughter Lydia to eat . . . because it tasted just like lemons. Third, be all in. Elliot didn’t do anything half-hearted. Many times when he and Waylon would be playing army, and the “enemy” would try to take him out, I would find Elliot sprawled out on the living room floor calling me to help him get our dog to lick his face to revive him, saying “It’s got to be real like in the movies.” The boys didn’t waste any time together during sleepovers, and I use the term SLEEPover rather loosely. They would play their hearts out until late at night. When we would finally get them into bed, you could hear them whispering if they should set the alarm for 5:00 or 5:30 in the morning – they didn’t want to miss a minute of being together. Breakfast and lunch had to be eaten in one hand while a nerf or a lightsaber battle continued. And when the parents would come to pick one of them up, there always had to be one more game or one more snack. If that didn’t work, there was hiding in the other person’s car to sneak home with them, or running away through the field to Waylon’s grandparents’ house. By the way, Bigfoot is real and Elliot and Waylon have seen him. Although their Bigfoot meetings were not as regular as they would have liked, they were so all in, that they had themselves pretty scared to go outside sometimes. Are we just going through the motions in life? Let’s be like Elliot the Warrior and live all in. Fourth, friendship. Elliot was a great friend – the best! We could not have picked a better friend for Waylon. What they had was special. Waylon was proud of Elliot. Elliot was not afraid to throw an arm around Waylon’s shoulder from

First, you are capable. Elliot said his sister Lilly told him this, and he passed this wisdom onto Waylon. So when it would be time to clean up the dishes, Elliot would say, “Waylon, it’s like Lilly says to me, you are capable.” I use this line on Waylon all the time and he can’t complain because it came from Elliot - and whatever Elliot said was gold. I am a teacher, and over the years I have shared this wisdom with my students – all because of Elliot. The way Elliot battled cancer showed all of us that we are capable of far more than we can imagine. Second, get through the bad stuff to get to the good. Fighting cancer is hard. Surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, needles, horrible stuff to swallow, x-rays, MRIs, long days, weeks and months in the hospital – such a fight is not for the weak. Over the years of treatment, we told Dawn to use sleepovers and hanging out with Waylon as a way to help Elliot get through the bad stuff. This was partly selfish because we just loved having Elliot with us. He was the life of the party and all boy, but he had the biggest, sweetest heart, and honestly the best manners. He was so sweet in fact that he would always eat what I cooked for dinner, have seconds, and then tell me how good it tasted. To which Waylon would always say, “Well, I like Mrs. Dawn’s food.” He loved our snack drawer and he would always clean up any messes without being asked. He said please and thank you all the time. Elliot endured all of the pain and hardship because he knew something good was coming. Ultimately, he knew that what happens here on earth is just part of passing through on the way to our true home in Heaven. And now, perhaps he and John the Baptist are comparing notes on how long they went without bathing or what weird bugs they ate. I am sure Elliot is telling

time to time. There was no room for jealousy in their friendship. If Elliot had something that he thought Waylon would like, he would either give it to him or ask his mom to buy Waylon the exact same thing – and Waylon did the same for Elliot. Elliot’s influence on Waylon was exactly what we wanted for our boy. Waylon is braver, more confident and has a stronger faith in God because of Elliot. Waylon used to be somewhat shy. This changed some with Elliot’s help. One time he convinced Waylon to enter a talent show. The two of them arm-pit farted a song truly a proud moment for both sets of parents. For Waylon, crazy stuff like that would not have been possible without Elliot. Elliot could have written a book, or better yet, made a YouTube
video on friendship. I know Waylon would be game. Bottom line, Elliot demonstrated how to be a friend. It is now our job to carry it on. Fifth, love large. Elliot loved - and he truly loved large. He knew how to drive his big sister Lilly crazy, but he loved her so much. He affectionately called her his second mom. He loved how she took care of him. She was always watching out for him, and with Elliot, that wasn’t an easy task. Charlie was Elliot’s cool older brother. He loved Charlie with such awe and respect. Waylon and Elliot wanted to do what Charlie did. Elliot loved telling Waylon about the things he did with Charlie. Elliot loved his dad and everything he talked about had his dad included in it. Marc is so much a

part of who Elliot was. Plus, it doesn’t get much cooler than having your dad be a police officer, right? I think a major highlight for both Waylon and Elliot was seeing Marc chase after a suspect. Their version of the story may have had some embellishments, but it showed us that Marc was his hero. And Dawn was the best mom Elliot could have had. He loved and adored her. He wanted her to be happy, well, unless she was trying to pick him up from our house earlier than he wanted. He would notice things at our house or when we were out places and he would say, “My mom would like that.” I think about how he bid on and won a scripture sign for his mom at our church missionary auction. He was filled with pride and excitement to be able to give it to his mom. Above all Elliot loved God. He taught us that we might not understand everything we experience
here on earth, but we are to love and trust God through it all. He had no anger towards God. He knew God was good all the time. Elliot knew that when he got to Heaven he wanted to run and give Jesus a hug. He taught us that when we love God, death is not an end, it is a beginning of our real life with our Heavenly Father. And we know that this is just a temporary separation from Elliot and that those of us who accept Jesus will see him again. Remember, if God is with us, and Elliot is with God, then we can’t be far apart. Love will always keep us close - and Elliot truly loved large. Fate whispers to the warrior, you cannot withstand the storm. The warrior whispers back, I am the storm. Marc, Dawn, Lilly and Charlie, we are still Storms Strong! And we will forever remember Elliot the Warrior.

n attentive and enthusiastic crowd estimated at over 4,000 gathered in Brandon Park last evening at the Community Music Festival sponsored by the Adult Education Division of the Works Progress Administration. Musical groups of this city and surrounding communities combined to give the people of Williamsport an entertaining and artistic program upon which much time and talent was spent. The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra under the direction of E. Hart Bugbee opened the program with “Salute to Williamsport” composed by John Hazel of this city. The Muncy Choral Art Society sang “Triumphal Entry,” arranged by Katherine Weddle-Roberts of Muncy and conducted by Henry H. Hall. Miss Dorethea Smith, soprano, was soloist for the number. Salvatore Chianelli of Williamsport, gave a fine tenor soloist, gave a fine rendition of Di Carpia’s “O Sole Mio” and “Seranati” by Tosti. He was

followed by the Bethune-Douglass Chorus of Williamsport, which sang “Go Down Moses,” and “God’s Gonna Set the World on Fire”. \The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra played numbers from Jerome Kern’s “Showboat,” in an arrangement by the director, Mr. Bugbee. Enthusiastic applause greeted the number in which the orchestra was assisted by the Elks Male Chorus singing “Old Man River.” The Montgomery Citizens Band, under the direction of Clarence Showers, played selections from “The Red Mill” by Herbert, and “Hungarian Dance No. 6” by Brahms. The second half of the program was opened by the Muncy Women’s Choral Club, singing “Morning Song” by Holze. The singing section of the Williamsport Turn Verein, under the direction of J.W. Rothenberg, gave one of the best performance of the evening when it sang some difficult choral music without an accompaniment. The songs were “Eleven Glocken,” Abschied” and “Der Jager und Curpfolz.”

A
rather interesting debate occurred at the work session of the County Commissioners on June 18th when Commissioner Tony Mussare questioned Ed Robbins, Director of Juvenile Probation, rather intensely over the cost of sending at-risk youth to the George Junior Republic complex at Grove City, PA. Commissioner Mussare was gagging over the price tag of $51,200 a month for seven young people. This averages out to about $240 a day, or $10 an hour, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Now, it is true that
with funds provided by the state and federal government, Lycoming County’s cost is reduced to only about 17-18% of that total. But the question is still hotly debated — is it worth it? Let’s start with what is meant by the term “at risk” youth. Technically this term means “a child who is less likely to transition successfully to adulthood.” It is curious how we have softened language over time, because not so long ago, these same youngsters were called “delinquent” or even “incorrigible.” The definition of those words means “usually a young person who regularly performs illegal or immoral acts and is incapable of

County Hall Corner: The High Cost of Delinquency
being corrected or amended.” At risk, indeed! When the “at risk” young person comes before Family Court, Judge Joy McCoy goes to great lengths to find the most amicable solution that will change the behavior of the offending youth. At the regular Commissioner’s Meeting on June 20th, when the George Junior Republic expenditure was being considered, Judge McCoy herself spoke on the issue, noting that there are stages that these youth go through, beginning with detention for a first-crime or violating probation. By the time George Junior is being considered, all other options have been exhausted. Yet even then, Judge McCoy noted she often disagrees with Junior Probation and seeks to give the young person a “second chance” before being ordered to the Grove City facility, which may be a day or a week. She admitted that her success in that regard has been abysmally low, as they will continue to violate probation. What happens at George Junior? Why has this facility been so successful in reforming troubled young people? Most detention facilities monitor the youth around the clock, and as they meet the standards of the program, they are released. Unfortunately, the freedom the young person enjoys after a 24/7 surveillance situation often pulls them back into the damaging behavior. This is why George Junior is so different. For starters, they have had over 100 years of experience, and offer a broad continuum of programs that engage the youth at every level; mental, physical, and emotional while teaching him or her responsibility, citizenship, and the skills that will help them grow
into productive members of society. The program is also designed for step-downs at each phase of the young person’s progress through the program. Thus, when they are released, they have learned how to be independently responsible. The success rate is through the roof, but better explained through a local woman who had served as a guardian for her troubled grandson and recently wrote Commissioner Mussare. This young man had serious anger issues that were controlling his life, and his continual offenses eventually led to his stay at George Junior. According to this lady, the institution changed his life. She saw progress at each visit. Upon completing the program, he was a completely different person. He graduated two weeks ago from an area high school with a 90% grade average. Expensive — no doubt about it. But the question that needs to be asked, what would it cost the county for these “at risk” youths to continue on into adulthood with uncontrolled destructive behavior? In that respect, it seems like George Junior Republic might just be a bargain.

t won’t be long and you’ll be heading to school. Kindergarten is fun, if you didn’t know that already. But are you nervous? Are you scared about your first day in school? Maybe you should know that other kids are in the same boat – or, as in the new book “Kindergarrrten Bus” by Mike Ornstein, illustrated by Kevin M. Barry, they’re in the same vehicle. It was the first day of kindergarten and all the kids were lined up, ready to go. The bus was on time, but the bus driver wasn’t your normal personnext-door. This bus driver had a parrot named Polly. Yes, the bus driver was a pirate! Once everyone was aboard his “tight ship – err… bus,” he had all the “little scoundrels” in their seats. And then he had rules: “No getting’ out of ye seats!” “No yellin’!”
“Keep ye hooks – errr, I mean hands – to ye self! And always rrrespect ye mates!” Who expects a pirate to drive the bus? Nobody, that’s who, and these kids were scared. Mostly, they held tight to the toys they brought with them, and they missed their moms and dads and puppies. The kids were very sad. A couple of them started to cry but the pirate was having none of that. Pirates don’t cry! They’re extremely brave and they’re never scared! Or, at least that’s what this pirate said. But when his beloved parrot, Polly, flew out of a window as the bus hit a pothole, well, he was plenty frightened and not one bit brave! He might have even cried because he was really scared and he needed his parrot. He stopped the bus and it might have sat forever, but one of the kids reminded the pirate about the meaning of “brave.” Another said that being super-afraid was okay and that “Everybody gets scared.” The kids helped the pirate see that he could even cry a bit and everrrrrrything would turn out rrrrright in the end… In the life of your child, there have been many milestones. Starting school is a Big One, and “Kindergarrrten Bus” eventually makes it not quite as scary.

But first – this book can be a little intimidating. Kids will find themselves in the seats of this bus, with misery in the air and author Mike Ornstein’s pirate at the wheel, gruff and authoritative. That may take a sensitive little one aback; the illustrations by Kevin M. Barry add to an atmosphere that doesn’t initially feel very friendly at all, and certainly not warm or fun. Thankfully, that all changes, but it takes a few pages to get to a better place in the story; in the end, yes, it does turrrrrrn out alrrrrright but ARGH! It will help if you read this book aloud properly: it demands Pirate Talk

This Week’s LION: Ex-Congressman Tom Marino By Larry Stout
W
hen Tom Marino was elected for his fifth term of office for the U.S. House of Representatives, he was confident it would be his last campaign. What Tom did not expect was a life-threatening illness the first week of January of this year that almost cost him his life. It was a terribly difficult decision, but for the sake of his family and his constituency, he knew that he needed to resign from the U.S. Congress. Sitting with Tom and lovely wife Edie at their home recently, I had the opportunity to discuss his health, his history, his hopes, and his hero. Tom says he feels “fine” and looking at him, he certainly looks fit and healthy. But the reality is that he has had three surgeries since January and currently only has less than half usage of one of his two kidneys. He is in surprisingly good spirits given his condition, knowing that others like him would be on dialysis, but he has “defied the odds,” largely because he knows he has some of the best physicians in the world who are overseeing his medical process. Tom Marino has always been a fighter, working at a bakery right out of high school till the age of 30. Then through pure grit and determination got a bachelor’s degree from Lycoming College and then went on to get a law degree (J.D.) from Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle. From 1992-2002, he served as the Lycoming County District Attorney, which Tom said was the best job he ever had. (Es-
pecially getting to bust down doors of crack houses!) Tom obviously did his job very well, because in 2002 President George W. Bush appointed him United States Attorney for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. In deciding to run for Congress in 2010, he knew he had an uphill battle because, unlike many who run for Congress, Tom Marino is far from rich. In fact, his wealth has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of all members of Congress. Even a bare-bones Congressional election can cost in the neighborhood of a quarter of a million dollars, so it took many grassroots contributions to get him elected. It was a true blue-collared campaign. Once elected in 2010, Tom Marino was an unknown until one fateful August afternoon in 2014. Tom was on the House floor, making some comments on border funding. When he left the podium, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi suddenly jumped up from her seat and came chasing him across the House floor, shaking her finger and openly chastising him for his comments. These dramatics were all captured beautifully by C-SPAN and then YouTubed to the world. At that moment, Congressman Tom Marino became a folk hero. He remarks that even today, five years after the event, he still has people come up to him at airports all over the country and ask to shake his hand for shaking up Nasty Nancy. But Tom also received notoriety for becoming the first member of Congress to endorse Donald Trump for the U.S. presidency in 2015 openly. Tom saw something in the man that

ing red! President-elect Donald Trump called him back at 12:30 a.m. and said, “You were right, Tom, and thank you!” Tom Marino has stayed close to President Trump throughout his presidency and still keeps in touch today. Tom is very thankful as he looks back at his political career, for the fantastic staff he had working with him, for some amazing legislation that he had a hand in getting passed, and for many near and dear friends he has picked up over the decades. Tom Marino now works in the private sector for a software firm as a consultant and lobbyist, and his medical situation may yet require dialysis or perhaps a kidney transplant. But Tom and Edie Marino seem amazingly serene, an attitude that comes from the willingness to take risks, accepting the highs and lows as they come, always looking forward with hope and back with joy.

others did not. When Wolf Blitzer from CNN interviewed Tom, he openly asked, “How can you support this guy?” Tom responded, “Look at America! We are $20 trillion in debt, 20 million people are out of work, welfare has skyrocketed, health care is a disaster — and here is a guy who has made $10 billion, so he must know how to get things done. We need someone like him to straighten out this country.” Tom Marino designed a plan for Donald Trump to win Pennsylvania, something that a Republican had not done since George H.W. Bush in 1988. On election night in November of 2016, Donald Trump called Tom on the telephone and relayed that pollsters predicted he would not win Pennsylvania, and without it, he could not win the presidency. Tom told him the pollsters were dead wrong; PA was go-

top raffle prize worth $10,000, and smaller amounts such as $1,000, $500 and $100, great entertainment, food and various drawings highlight the Susquehanna Valley Big Twins Motorcycle Club’s 4th of July Party fundraiser, held July 5, 6 and 7 at the club’s clubhouse at 84 Harley Drive, located near Woolrich. Free camping is also a part of the event. According to Keith “Shooter” Harman, president of the SVBTMC, this event is the club’s largest fundraiser of the year. The money raised from it helps support the club’s various charitable activities throughout the year. These include a yearly “Bunny Run” at Easter time in which members of the club round up stuffed animals to be given out
to children in area hospitals. “Charitable activities are an important part of our club’s mission,” Harman told Webb Weekly. “Over the years it seems as though bikers have gotten a bad reputation and we hope through our activities we can help reverse that image.” According to its mission statement the Susquehanna Valley Big Twins Motorcycle Club is a non-profit founded in 1982. They provide support and fundraisers for those in need. The groups they have helped include the American Cancer Relay For Life, Camp Victory, Clinton County Senior Citizens Fair, the Salvation Army, just to name a few. Members of the club have also participated in the annual 9-11 Motorcycle Run. For further information about the SVBTMC you can access their Facebook page.

HOME COOKIN alive girlfriend! I hope to run into you again somewhere and find out your name! It’s people like you who make this world a better place. God Bless the USA! Patriotic Sugar Cookies Ingredients: • 1 cup sugar • 1 cup softened butter • 1/2 cup milk • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon almond extract • 1 egg
• 3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt Red and Blue Coloring Directions: Mix sugar, butter, milk, vanilla and almond extract, and egg. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Mix until well incorporated. Divide dough in three equal parts. Leave one part uncolored for the white dough; color one part of dough with red coloring; color another part of dough with blue coloring. Form all three dough parts
into rounds. Then flatten into disks. and cover and refrigerate for at least one hour. or place the rounds in the freezer for about 20 minutes. Take dough and combine the three colors to make a cookie, about tablespoon size or a little larger. Place cookie dough balls on baking sheet and flatten slightly with the bottom of a drinking glass. Bake in 350 degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Cool on wire rack for about 5 minutes. Notes: I loaded my colors into a cookie scoop, but you could just press the colors together to make them. If you do use a cookie scoop, make sure you clean the scoop out, with a paper

towel, after you form each cookie so that the colors won’t transfer. This recipe is from an Old Betty Crocker Cookbook, but I love the recipe!!

HOW TO DRESS work, on your frame. Regardless of how a certain type of silhouette fits or doesn’t fit, be kind to yourself. It’s not you that is not suited to the garment; it’s the garment that’s not suited to you. Once you have an idea of your silhouette, the right undergarments are key to define and support your shape. Of course, knowing how to wear shapewear can be tricky. Read the packaging, or check out user videos to see how best to incorporate support garments into your dressing. FYI, the straps on high-waisted Spanx shorts are meant to wrap around your bra straps. Take it from me; I learned that one the hard way. Next up, create some contrast with color. Even though monochromatic looks are on trend right now, it’s much more flattering to have differing shades between your base and top layers. If your cardigan is light, try going with a darker tank or vice-versa. Dynamic color pairings enhance the body’s dimensions, instead of being one beige block. Think of a black camisole with a white or blush denim jacket. Or a white tee with a navy blazer. Bright-and-dark color combos have a visual pop that’s way more stylish than dressing in all black. Speaking of color, don’t shy away from bright shades and prints. Pattern is where you can let your personality

emerge through your most flattering silhouette. There’s the old saying: Once you find a great piece, buy it in every color. I tend to agree and would add that you buy it in every print that strikes your fancy. For me, that’s V-necked striped t-shirts. I have a variety, like white stripes on black, black stripes on white, navy stripes on white, white stripes on grey, etc. etc. Your print of choice can be polka dots, florals, chevron, or novelty prints like anchors or lemons. If you don’t have a signature go-to pattern, then try a few on to see what best suits you. Of course, you’re not limited to one; you can wear as many different types of print as you like. Lastly, invest in accessories. You don’t have to have a ton of clothing, or an assortment of silhouettes, to mix up your style. Pendant necklaces, statement earrings, bangles, stacked rings, printed scarves, and of course, stylish shoes can take basic tops and jeans a long way on the style train. They will also bring a bit of polish to dresses of any color and can play up vibrant prints. Remember, no matter your size, you can always accessorize. Of course, even if you have on the most fabulous dress with quality jewelry, the best thing you can do to flatter your shape is to keep your head held high and smile bright with confidence!

Reflections On the Loss of A Beloved Wife Five Years Later
I
t does not seem like it, but it has been five years, July 5, 2014, since I lost my beloved wife Mary to leukemia. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think about her. Many times it seems like it has been a long five years, and other times it feels like it was just yesterday, whatever it is, the sadness and loneliness does not abate. During those five years, I have been comforted and supported by family and friends, and they have helped to sustain me through these tough years. But rather than dwell on the sadness and grief that I feel. I want to reflect on the absolute joy that she gave me for the all too short time of five years we were together. She was a wonderful life partner and companion. We enjoyed each other’s company very much. She always seemed to sense when something was bothering me and did her utmost to help out whenever I was feeling low or needed some positive reinforcement for my all too fragile ego and sense of self-esteem. She was a very godly woman who epitomized the best of Christian values such as generosity, tolerance, non-
judgementalness, decency, love for her fellow man, and humility. In the days after her death, I heard various stories and anecdotes from people who knew and loved Mary and what she meant to them. These stories all seemed to focus on her loveliness of spirit, the kindness to them and in many cases, the patience she exhibited. I can attest to that patience personally. She was always graciously upbeat and was particularly so during her last illness. Many wonderful things can be said about Mary. She loved and was loved by everyone. But I think that there is one particular illustration that exemplifies the essence of Mary to me. When she was earning a degree at Lock Haven, she spent a lot of time at the library studying. During these times she would encounter a woman custodian named Diane. Many times people like Diane are not noticed. They are part of the surroundings to most people and someone that most people would pay little attention to. Diane was a very hard worker who did her work well. During these encounters with Diane, Mary befriended her, asking about

right field and could see a beautiful rainbow. Somehow I think it was Mary telling me everything was going to be alright. I think paraphrasing two quotes from Shakespeare are how I want to close out this remembrance of my dear Mary. “When she shall die, cut her out into little stars, and she shall make the face of heaven so fine, that all the world will be in love with night and pay no mind to the garish sun.” So, “Goodnight my sweet princess Mary and may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.” Mary, the love you left behind carries on. I know you are safe above.

and caring about the things that Diane cared about. Mary treated a humble custodian with the dignity and respect she deserved. It was also the way that Mary treated everyone. Mary and Diane became dear friends and remained so until the end. Losing Mary is a bitter and painful loss, but I try to console myself with the thought that at least I had five wonderful years with her. The glow from those years will last me the rest of my days. The day after we buried Mary, her son, and two of her grandchildren went with me to a Crosscutters game. It had rained a little before the game. When we got to our seats, we looked toward

Festive Facts for July 4th
E
ach year on July 4, Americans celebrate the birth of their nation and independence from Great Britain. This day marks the anniversary of the presentation and acceptance of the Declaration of Independence, signed 243 years ago on July 4, 1776. The Declaration of Independence began as a letter to Britain’s King George to explain why the Continental Congress was interested in declaring independence from Great Britain. The writing of the declaration began on July 2 and the final wording was established on July 4. Independence Day is full of opportunities to celebrate and enjoy oneself. Parades, fireworks, parties, barbecues, and much more are part of the festivities. Another way to commemorate Independence Day is to educate oneself about the many historical and entertaining facts that surround the day. The following are some interesting details about the origins of Independence Day and the celebrations that surround it. • Although 56 people eventually signed the Declaration of Independence, only John Hancock signed the document on July 4, 1776. The rest added their names later on. John Hancock’s signature is ornate and widely recognized. Putting your “John Hancock” on a document has become synonymous with the process of signing something. • The Declaration of Independence was
adopted while the Continental Congress met in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Statehouse. That building is now known as Independence Hall. • The average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence was 45. The youngest person to sign was Thomas Lynch, Jr., who was 27 when he signed the document. Benjamin Franklin, at age 70, was the oldest signee. • John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were the only signees who went on to serve as presidents. Coincidentally, Jefferson and Adams both died on July 4, 1826, within hours of each other.

represented. • Independence was gained in 1776, and the first celebration took place in Philadelphia four days later. The White House held its first Independence Day festivities in 1801. • Benjamin Franklin proposed that the turkey be the national bird of the United States. However, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson overruled him, and the bald eagle became the national bird. • The only copy of the engrossed and signed Declaration of Independence is in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Independence Day is a time for hot dogs, ice cream and, of course, revisiting America’s history.

ccording to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), July is the peak month for grilling fires, followed by June, May, and August.1 Annually, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 10,200 home fires each year involving grills, hibachis, or barbeques. With the summer season fast approaching, Benjamin Kimble of SERVPRO® of Williamsport/Montoursville, a fire and water damage cleanup specialist in the Muncy area, urges homeowners to check the readiness of their outdoor cooking equipment — like grills and propane tanks – to help ensure summer cooking fires don’t become house fires. “The NFPA reports that seven out of every 10

adults in the U.S. has a grill or a smoker,” said Kimble. “That statistic really highlights the risk that homeowners face of experiencing a home fire caused by grilling and other open flame cooking. It’s important to take some basic safety steps to help ensure you’ll spend your summer enjoying friends and family and not dealing with the aftermath of a grillrelated house fire.” According to the NFPA, the top three causes of grilling fires are failure to clean the grill, leaks in gas hose lines or breaks in the grill body itself, and proximity to flammable objects. Kimble says these risks are easily managed and offers the following tips from the NFPA to help Muncy area residents prepare and use their outdoor grills:

Propane Grills 1. Check for leaks in the gas tank hose before using your grill. 2. Open gas grill top before lighting the grill. 3. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas
off and wait at least five minutes before relighting it. Charcoal Grills 1. Use only charcoal starter fluid or opt for a charcoal chimney or electric starter. 2. Never add charcoal starter fluid, or any flammable fluid, to the fire. 3. Dispose of coals in a metal container after the coals have cooled completely. “It doesn’t take long to prepare your grill for safe cooking, but it can take months to recover from a fire and the resulting flame, smoke, and water damage,” said Kimble. “Invest a few minutes now to get your outdoor cooking equipment clean and ready to go, and then spend your summer enjoying good times and great food, not dealing with the destruction and heartbreak of a house fire.”

A Weekly Look At The Williamsport Crosscutters Compiled by the Crosscutters Media Relations Dept. Alize Johnson Unable to Appear July 6 Due to a conflict with the start of the NBA Summer League, Alize Johnson will be unable to appear in-person at his bobblehead giveaway scheduled for July 6. In a statement, the Crosscutters said, “We are sorry to announce that Alize will be unable to appear due to a scheduling conflict. The Crosscutters want to thank Alize and his management team for all their help and cooperation with this event and we hope to have him at a future game during the 2019 season.” Cutters Dominican Dinner Returns July 29 - Dominican Players & Teammates to Serve The Williamsport Crosscutters have teamed up with A.C.E.S. unters today have basically three options when it comes to having a place to hunt. There is public land, such as our Pennsylvania state game lands and state forests, but they can sometimes be crowded by other hunters who you don’t know and can’t be too sure they are ethical sportsmen. You could join a hunting camp or buy into a lease, but that can be expensive. That leaves private land, of which there is a good deal, but it can be tricky getting permission from a landowner to access his property for hunting. There are a few things to keep in mind if you decide to try to line up some private property for this coming fall season. Make a good first impression. Don’t show up on the farmer’s porch steps the day before hunting season and expect to be welcome. Such short notice is disrespectful to a landowner. Over the summer months is the ideal time to attempt to gain access to a new hunting property. Instead of dropping by just before hunting season, go now in hopes of gaining access to hunt coyotes or groundhogs. Most landowners would be very happy to have someone help eliminate groundhogs which burrow under the foundations of buildings or dig holes in pastures used by their cattle.
Very few property owners would balk at the idea of someone eliminating coyotes on their land. Begin a relationship with a landowner by reducing the number of varmints or vermin on his land, and it just might lead to a friendship that will allow access for fall hunting of turkeys or deer. Farmers and landowners don’t just sit around idly, passing the time. They are busy! There is always work to do. If you want to build a good relationship, offer to help with work that is being done. Perhaps you could volunteer some time to help cut and split firewood or aid him in clearing his trails and logging roads. Volunteer your time and let him come up with a suggestion or two where he could use your help. When you do show up to help, don’t arrive empty handed! Bring along a case of his favorite beverage or stop by the local donut shop and pick up some coffee and an assortment of donuts to start the day with. It helps to show you really appreciate his giving you permission to hunt. Yes, farmers are busy, and sometimes too busy to take time for them to hunt. But, they very well may like to have some fresh venison steaks or backstrap to serve up for dinner! Sharing your harvest, especially when it comes from their property, can go a long way toward building a long term relationship. If you are having a picnic sometime

hunt. Are there any days of the week that they have already reserved for someone else, or a family member, or will you be allowed access anytime? Make sure you know where you can and cannot park a vehicle. Offer to call ahead of time, so the landowner knows when you will be there and is not surprised to see you walking out of his woods or through his fields. Are there any places on the property that are off limits to you? Establishing these boundaries and guidelines shows the landowner that you respect him and will respect his wishes. Gaining access to a new property for hunting is really not all that difficult when you use common sense and show respect and act responsibly.

this summer, make sure you invite your new landowner friend and his family to join you. The time you will spend together at a cookout will go a long way in strengthening your friendship. If you are fortunate enough to gain permission to hunt turkey, deer or bear, then, for heaven sakes, offer to share the harvest! Even if the landowner says “no’ to the offer of fresh organic meat that came from their property, you can still show up with a nice fresh out of the oven roast that he can enjoy for dinner. Above all, be respectful. Make sure you completely understand any particular things the landowner will expect from you. Be certain what you are allowed to hunt and what they would prefer you not

was hard, but they all seemed to enjoy the event. After the cribs were built, they were loaded onto a pontoon boat and sent to their destination at the bottom of the lake. Michele Kittell, Executive Director, told me this was the 4th such camp in Pennsylvania. Staff from the park provided the necessary materials and equipment to carry out the cover building and placing project. Gary Alt, the former bear biologist here in Pennsylvania and one of the camp directors, was also on hand to direct daily workshops and sessions. Many of the former participants return to assist in camp activities. Kyle Clark, a former “Bucktail” is a Ph.D. candidate at Penn State and was serving as one of the camp instructors. Obviously, the camps are a very positive experience for those who are able to

appy Birthday to us, Happy Birthday to us Despite all the discord we’re worth all the fuss We’re the land of the free and the home of the brave Proven by the sacrifices so many freely gave Regardless of your views or those you dislike Those founding fathers did get things right The courage they showed 243 years ago Still lights the sky with the rockets red glow Regardless of your plans for this wonderful day
It all began with what that Declaration did say So show your respect, stand up and take pride Tis a fitting tribute to those who stood, fight & died! There are a lot of folks who don’t like to divulge their age when birthday time rolls around. That can be understood. But there shouldn’t be anyone not aware or proudly proclaim the most happiest of birthdays to the good old USA as we all take time to celebrate the red, white & blue’s 243rd big day. With this year’s commemoration falling
on a Thursday, many will be enjoying a four-day respite from their normal routine. The Fourth of July is a truly unique American holiday in many respects. It is also one that’s minus other holiday duties of buying gifts, sending flowers, making telephone or purchasing Scott calls, Lowery special wardrobes. It’s a time to enjoy the warmer weather we’ve all waited so long for, picnics, swimming, boating, baseball, and softball games, backyard grilling, and of course, the ever-popular fireworks to top it all off. No doubt the members of the Continental
MURRAY
Congress gathered on that July 4, 1776 day weren’t thinking about picnics, but the fireworks their brave action took severed the political connections to Great Britain. To be historically accurate, the Declaration of Independence wasn’t officially signed by its 56 signees until August 2, 1776, in Philadelphia. The most notable among them were John Hancock, the Continental Congress president, and two men who would later become Presidents of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. If they were among us today, who knows how the trio would be celebrating. Hancock was known to enjoy a game of tennis. Jefferson liked to fish, ride horses and to walk, while Adams took pleasure in swimming. All these years later many of us will be enjoying

Man’ speech in 1939; a no-hitter thrown by the Yankees’ Dave Righetti against the rival Red Sox in 1983, and the day the Fourth became the Fifth when a Mets/Braves game in 1985 went 19 innings not concluding until 4:00 a.m. on July 5. Despite the long association with baseball on the Fourth of July, this year’s schedule maker must not have been aware of the significance of the American pastime. Of the 30 MLB teams, six of them (Mets, Giants, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Orioles, and Astros) will not be playing. With the Yankees playing in Tampa Bay and the Mets having the day off, it will mark the first time since 1981 that The Big Apple will be baseball-less on our Nation’s birthday. Consider the irony. Perhaps four of the country’s five most historical entrenched cities will not be celebrating the holiday with their fans. New York will be minus their two teams, Philadelphia will be playing in Atlanta, Baltimore’s Camden Yards, just a few blocks from where the Star Spangled Banner was written, will be silent and Boston’s Red Sox will be playing in Canada on this red, white & blue day. The Washington Nationals are the lone exception, as they will the Miami Marlins with an 11:00 a.m. scheduled start. Perhaps given some extra time to ponder, those 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence might have penned in an additional line or two of instructions for the lords of Major League Baseball. Or maybe John Hancock would have just headed to the tennis courts. Whatever your plans for the day make it a happy and safe one! Happy Birthday!

those same activities. In the days leading up to July 4, while flipping through the TV channels, I took the time to watch the movie “The Sandlot” again. That classic 1993 film reminds me of my younger days when a group of us spent the summer playing a game we called ‘speedball’ on the old Mountain Avenue School playground in South Williamsport. It was an almost everyday occurrence and surely contributed to my lifelong affair with baseball. The movie featured a segment that the ‘sandlot crew’ would proclaim was the only time they got to play a night game. They gathered on their rag-tag field using the light provided by the community’s annual fireworks display to enjoy their own brand of baseball. As our own gigantic fireworks extravaganza lights up the sky hopefully, it will spark similar memories of past childhoods for you. Baseball will indeed be the centerpiece of numerous community celebrations all around the land this holiday. There is an old baseball lexicon suggesting that Major League teams leading their division on July 4 will remain in that position when the season ends. Statistics reveal that to be true about 60% of the time. If the Wild Card is included in the calculations, teams in that July 4 position will reach the playoffs more than 66% of the time. There has long been something special about the intersection of America’s pastime with America’s birthday as friends and family gather, and many great baseball memories were forged on July 4. Among them were the famous Lou Gehrig ‘Luckiest

Valley in the 17728. Most streams and creeks can overwhelm those new to kayaking. Battling the current and avoiding snags shouldn’t be done the first time out. Once you think you are ready-plan a group outing down the Susquehanna River or Big Pine. Coordinating with a few friends makes the put in and take out rather easy. Be sure to pack plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, an emergency whistle, and extra layers of clothing. A waterproof drybag is highly recommended and will come in handy if you plan to take your cell phone or camera. Have dry clothes available- especially in the early spring. I always keep a change of clothes inside the car just in case. The most important piece of equipment on any kayaking trip is your Personal Flotation Device. There are several different types of PFDs, but a Type III is the only way to go. You should look for a comfortable vest, fits well but not too tightly and helps you stay afloat. It is required that every kayaker has a PFD in their boat. Give a hoot. Don’t pollute. Enjoy the outdoors and leave no trace. Hopefully, this write up will get you on the water with me real soon — fish on everybody. Cheers.

and they quit. A decent understanding of the basic stroke will ensure your experiences in a kayak go rather smoothly. It’s important to know that the best paddlers use the least amount of energy. Sit up straight and face forward. Keep those hands and wrists in line with your arms. Lightly grip the paddle. It may seem natural to use just your arms, but the core is much stronger and will help you last a lot longer. Rotate your torso from left to right instead, making sure your back is pressed against the seat at all times. Sitting forward will not only shift your center, but it will also cause you to use more energy. To make a stroke, rotate your body to the right while reaching forward with the left side of the paddle. Simply dip the blade into the water and pull back firmly while rotating your torso. Remember not to lean forward. When the left blade exits- the right should enter the water on the opposite side of the kayak. Pull back firmly and repeat the process. It’s working E.T. It’s working! It’s best to get started on a quiet lake or lazy river. I highly recommend Rose
