Gift Giving Smiles from Local Aisles By Jim Webb Jr.

I

t’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year! As I’m in agreement with Andy Williams and his Christmas carol classic. Therefore, I’ll hold off on talking about anything that is politics, pandemic, or Governor Wolf ’s complete poppycock that’s playing out each and every day. Hopefully, I get a new Louisville Slugger pen for Christmas to take full swings at these issues when the calendar flips to 2021. Please enjoy, share, and partake in all your holiday traditions. Do not allow the grinches to steal one Christmas memory. There is a COVID-safe way to accomplish everything on your list. Most of all, remember and celebrate the true reason for the season. Before I get started on some great holiday gift-giving ideas to support local business, I have one tackle to wrap up from last week. Mr. Burt Francis, longtime Jersey Shore resident, and historian, reached out to me. It was great to hear from him as always, and he dropped some great Bulldog gridiron knowledge on me to share. In 1949, Mr. Francis played for the Jersey Shore Bulldogs and Head Coach Ken Hart. The team finished undefeated that season. There was no state championship game that year. However, Coach Hart informed his then player, Mr. Francis, about the 1928 Bulldog team he had played on. The 1928 PIAA State Championship game featured Harrisburg’s William Penn High

School defeating Jersey Shore 26-0. So, this year’s team was actually the 2nd in Jersey Shore football history to reach the state final. Merry Christmas, and thanks for sharing, Mr. Francis. If you’re still looking for just the right present or a stocking stuffer, here are some great quick, and easy ideas. We have so many great local eateries and restaurants. You can never go wrong with the gift of food. A lot of our mom-and-pop places have had a very difficult year. So, here’s a great gift given that’s two-fold. It helps out the special people that have been the culinary backbone of the local business community, and provided great hospitality for years. Hopefully, we soon return to everybody going out to eat as normal in the West Branch Valley. But for those that may still feel uncertain, or maybe are high risk to do so anytime soon, they can use the gift card for takeout/delivery. A person’s favorite meal out, at the comfort of their own table, is a great gift any time of the year. Remember, gift cards for your kids’ favorite pizza place make a great stocking stuffer. Believe me, they will be found in both Jimmy and Hunter’s stockings. Dairy Queen and Dunkin gift cards are perfect to have on hand just in case you forget somebody — not that I would ever do that. Before I move off food, I guess we should cover the confectionaries. We have so many great local chocolate stores. From chocolate

covered Oreos to chocolate covered pretzels to whatever your Christmas candy tradition is, shop our local chocolatiers or buy their products in our local stores where available. Next up, ideas for the active and sports minded folks in your life. The River Valley Regional YMCA has great facilities and fitness programs. There is something available for everyone, no matter of age. A gift card or even yearly membership may be perfect for a loved one. If that person you’re looking for likes golf, don’t forget about White Deer Golf Course. A gift card for a round of golf and a cart or even a membership for that special someone will be appreciated. White Deer is very affordable, and the gift card could also be used for something great in the pro shop. Another place with plenty to do for kids of all ages is the Liberty Arena and Kaos Fun Zone. From Fly World to bowling to the arcade games and laser tag, the list goes on and on. You can also get gift cards to be used for the batting cages, turf time, or the state-of-the-art golf simulator. Scorz Barand-Grill, is a great spot for the parents to hang out while the kids play. If the person you’re shopping for enjoys swinging a racquet don’t forget about The PA Tennis Center. They specialize in tennis for all ages. From youth clinics to private lessons no matter of age. They have some of the best instructors available anywhere. The facility has recently been remodeled and is open to the general public. Gift certificates or full memberships are available for your stocking stuffer needs. Closing things out on my gift giving ideas is something I missed very dearly last sum-

mer. Williamsport Crosscutters baseball. The Cutters will be back better than ever for 2021. They will be affiliated directly with MLB and not just one organization. The level of play will be much improved with the new all-star type format the league will be using. The Crosscutter name and logo will remain the same and there’s plenty of great merchandise available. Gabe Sinicropi, Doug Estes, and sidekick Rhashan will be back to bring you plenty of baseball smiles. Season tickets, or a gift card make a great stocking stuffer, but make sure to get the following for a special gift — the 2021 Rhashan-13 Months of Smiles Calendar. Guaranteed to brighten any baseball fans’ year! The calendar goes for $10 and here is the great thing, all proceeds will be donated to Hope Enterprises. Now that’s a win/win for under the tree. You can check it out at crosscutters.com. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday shopping season. God Bless America.

Maybe Someday…

M

aybe someday I will be ready for Christmas like a normal person. But I gotta tell you. It ain’t gonna be this year. I wonder if we could spare one of the elves from the Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships Coloring Contest to go do my shopping, wrapping, and baking for me? Let’s face it; Tinsel hasn’t been a whole lotta help to the others anyway; she may as well earn her Christmas Tree Cakes somehow! Speaking of the Coloring Contest, we are almost ready to announce the winners. Frosty, Cherry, and Sprinkles have worked hard to sort them out and get them ready for judging! I’ll tell you what, I still don’t know how they did it, but that pneumatic tube to the top of Candy Cane Lane has been really effective! You can’t beat social distancing like that! I hope that Santa gives them a much-needed vacation when they get back to the North Pole. Just a little reward for all their hard work before they get back to making toys for all

the boys and girls! It always amazes me how many entries we get to our Coloring Contest! Hundreds Steph of littles come out Nordstrom and show us their best artwork! You wouldn’t believe some of the work, effort, and talent that goes into some of these coloring pages! I’ll be finding glitter around the office for months! I absolutely love it! It honestly goes a long way towards helping me find my Christmas spirit every year! We will have all the winners and participants listed in next week’s Christmas edition! As always, I can’t thank our local businesses enough for providing the great prizes! Huge shout out to Flyworld/Kaos Fun Zone, English Model Railroad, Elery Nau Hardware, Hooplas, Treasure Castle Playland, Harder Sporting Goods, AMC Theater, Dairy Queen, Trout Pond Park, and Faxon Bowling! So we know that I am behind the

eight-ball as always, but how are your holiday plans coming along? Have you ticked everyone off your list? Have everything wrapped and under the tree? Does your home smell like a Hallmark movie because you’ve been baking for weeks? Just know that if this describes you — I kinda hate you. I’m kidding!! But please come help me! And bring wine! I have literally no idea how I am going to get everything done! At least my tree is up, and my adorable, but also a little creepy, vintage Christmas decorations are all out! That was a task in itself in trying to find space for them among all the houseplants! In the meantime, if you need me, I’ll probably be out shopping! Oh! And speaking of shopping! Please don’t forget to upload pictures of your receipts to buylocalwinlocal. com/webb. The Chamber of Commerce is giving out tons of great gift cards to local businesses to the winners each week! And it’s super easy to enter. We also have a link on our website, webbweekly.com! You can enter to win every time you shop at a business in Lycoming County!

ach December on National Wreaths Across America Day, the aim to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 2,100 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad. Locally, this is being coordinated by the Blue Star Mothers of America Northcentral PA12 Chapter, one of eight chapters in Pennsylvania. It will be held on Saturday, December 19 at 10 a.m. Each year the committee strives to increase their mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach the community by laying wreaths on the graves of veterans buried at the local cemetery. It’s not just an exercise in decorating graves. “This year’s campaign was given a tremendous opportunity for increasing the number of wreaths available to honor veterans’ at

Wildwood Cemetery,” Dori Rankinen, an active member of the local Blue Star Mothers chapter, told Webb Weekly. The Wreaths Across America headquarters in Maine offered to double each wreath sold during a window of time, so we reached 750 wreaths early in May. However, we have 1,050 to lay in December.” She said there will be a brief 30-minute ceremony at noon following the wreath laying. “I was drawn to this event by a commercial that I saw four years ago. It was a plea for sponsors for additional wreaths at Arlington Cemetery, and it led me to find a local event. The quote that tugged at my heartstrings was ‘A person dies twice — once when they take their last breath, and again the last time their name is spoken.’ I hope that it inspires you as well to join in support of this noble cause”, stated Rankinen. According to Sierra Miller, there will be a similar wreath laying at the Picture Rocks Cemetery.

mothers who had sons or daughters in active service in the war. The name came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a Service Flag in a window of their homes. The Service Flag had a star for each family member in the military. A Blue Star represented living servicemen and women, and a Gold Star represented those who had lost their lives. Today that tradition lives on. The Blue Star Mothers support each other and their children while promoting patriotism. Their organization focuses on their mission every single day and will never, ever, forsake our troops, our veterans or the families of our Fallen Heroes. If you are the mother, stepmother, grandmother, foster mother or female legal guardian of children serving in the military, guard or reserves, or have children who are veterans and would like to know more about Blue Star Mothers, please go to www.bluestarmothers.org. “We are having a wreath laying on the headstones of all of the veterans’ graves in Picture Rocks Cemetery as part of the Wreaths Across America organization,” Miller said. “Under normal circumstances, there would be a ceremony to accompany the wreath laying, however due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in the area, the decision was made to cancel the ceremony and proceed with a small group of volunteers to assist with the wreath laying.” What is the background of “Wreaths Across America”? In 2007, the Worcester family, along with veterans, and others who had helped with their annual Christmas wreath ceremony in Arlington, formed Wreaths Across America™, to continue and expand this effort, and support other groups around the country who wanted to do the same. This nonprofit organization continues the Arlington tradition as part of its mission to “Remember — Honor — Teach”. In March 1942, during World War II, the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. organization was formed in the United States to provide support for

Williamsport Sun December 14, 1915 Christmas Sales Brings Business Rush to Stores

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

I

f Christmas sales are to be regarded as a barometer of industrial and financial conditions, Williamsport is enjoying one of the most prosperous periods in its history. A canvass of the leading stores of the city this morning resulted in a unanimous statement that Christmas sales this year will in all cases equal, and in most cases exceed last year. A member of one prominent firm states that they were enjoying the best year of their business career. Last year due to the industrial and financial depression due to the European conflict, the mercantile felt the scarcity of money perhaps more than any other business. In view of this, Williamsport merchants are jubilant over the fine prospects this year. The slogan, “Do Your Shopping Early” had many followers this year. Trade began picking up early in the fall and steadily increased until all the stores are handling all the business they can

Michael R. Lingg Funeral Director

accommodate. Most of the stores have taken on large extra sales forces and there is a marked scarcity of girls above the working age in the public schools. Many extra boys are being employed for floor and delivery service. One merchant stated although people are making most of their larger purchases now the stores expect to handle a flood of small trade in the week preceding the big holiday. Five and ten cent store managers reporting this morning that their business is exceptionally good. The manager of one store said their Williamsport branch is having a larger trade than any similar store has ever experienced in this city. Furniture dealers in this city report that their business will be at least equal, if it does not surpass last year. Dry goods dealers also report that their sales would also greatly exceed last year’s.

Memories are Timeless Treasures of the Heart

Kristen M. Overdorf Funeral Director

The holidays offer a special opportunity for families to talk and learn more about each other while everyone is gathered together. Memories, life stories, and holiday traditions can be shared among one another. We offer free information and Activity Guides to help families start The Talk of a Lifetime and create new memories that will be invaluable when the time comes to honor a loved one. From all of us at Knight-Confer Funeral Home: Season’s greetings of joy, good health and happiness to you and yours, this time of year and always.

County Hall Corner Push Pause on the Panic Button By Larry Stout

I

recently had a conversation with several people about the uptick of COVID cases in Lycoming County; one person stated that they had heard the Lycoming County Courthouse was closing down completely. Another added with absolute certainty that the UPMC Hospital was at capacity in their Intensive Care Units. It is exactly for reasons such as this that the Lycoming

County Commissioners have held several public press conferences to sort out the truth from rumors. On Thursday, December 3rd, the Commissioners held their third press conference since March, which besides themselves, also featured Dr. David Lopatofsky, the Chief Medical Officer from UPMC, Jeff Hutchinson, Director of the Lycoming County Department of Public Safety, Sheriff Mark Lusk, Director of Court Administration Andrianne

Stahl, Prothonotary & Clerk of Courts Tom Heap, and County Treasurer Cindy Newcomer. Unlike the previous two press conferences, there was a much greater sense of urgency this time. Commissioner Scott Metzger noted immediately that the county had seen a very sharp spike in the number of cases, which Commissioner Rick Mirabito noted was four times what it was in the Spring. It was brought home, even more when Commissioner Tony Mussare admitted that he himself had tested positive for COVID as well as members of his family. Yet, despite the current situation, there

was confidence, and even encouragement, from every single speaker. First, Dr. Lopatofsky assured the public that UPMC Susquehanna in Williamsport

has been more than able to deal with the caseload. He added that UPMC is part of a system that has a number of other health care facilities in the general area, which provides an assurance that even with this spike, those who need treatment will be receiving it. Other officials outlined that the Lycoming County Court House is still open, although access is being limited to those who absolutely need to be there. As a general rule, those who have business at the Court House or a District Magistrate office should call to make an appointment. Sheriff Lusk also emphasized that everyone will be required to wear a mask to enter these buildings. Specific directions can be found on the county’s website: lyco.org. Behind the scenes, every effort has been made to keep the county government ship moving forward. In fact, effort is not strong enough a word. Since March, a fifteen-person team of county commissioners and department heads have met every single day as a COVID Planning and Coordination Team. The County has developed 18 different directives for their employees for safeguards, which has included protective barriers, requirement of

masks in county-owned buildings, as well as daily cleaning of buildings and vehicles to help reduce the spread of the virus. All of this to ensure county employees’ safety and thus continue the necessary services supplied by county government. And amazingly, even in the middle of a pandemic, there was great news on the economic front of a new manufacturing business coming to Lycoming County. The Digger Specialities, Inc. of Indiana, a manufacturing company specializing in aluminum and vinyl fencing and railings, has made a sales agreement for twenty acres of county land, bringing 150 family-sustaining, career-type positions to this region. I echo Commissioner Metzger in giving thanks to Jason Fink of the Lycoming County Chamber of Commerce, the Lycoming Planning Department, Director Matt McDermott, Brady Township, and the Montgomery School District for their hard work and cooperation to bring this outstanding opportunity to Lycoming County. In times like these, it is good to remember a quote from Walt Disney, “When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.”

ep. Jeff Wheeland (R-Lycoming) has reintroduced House Bill 1579, legislation to apply voter ID requirements to each and every election, including photo and nonphoto options as acceptable forms of ID. “Due to allegations of fraud that may have taken place during the 2020 election, which has millions of Pennsylvanians questioning the security of their vote, I am proud to reintroduce this legislation to protect election integrity here in the Commonwealth,” said Wheeland. “Voter ID is crucial to ensuring the legal votes of law-abiding citizens are not canceled out by fraudulent activity. There are very few things you can do in life without an ID. The same standard should apply to the most important civic responsibility we have as American citizens.” Under the bill, the forms of ID that would be acceptable are the same as the options that are currently available to first-time voters in Pennsylvania. They include the following forms of photo and non-photo ID: • Driver’s license or PennDOT non-driver ID card. • Photo or non-photo ID card issued by other state agency. • Photo or non-photo ID card issued by the U.S. government. • Student ID with photo.

after holiday savings DECEMBER 28-31

REAL. WOOD. FURNITURE.

• Employee ID with photo. • Armed Forces of the U.S. ID card. • Firearm permit. • Current utility bill. • Current bank statement. • Government check. If a voter is unable to present a valid photo ID, he or she would be required to present two forms of non-photo ID from among those listed above. In the wake of the 2000 presidential election, the Commission on Federal Election Reform recommended in 2005 that states implement a voter identification requirement. States that have voter ID requirements include Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Arizona, North Dakota, Ohio, Arkansas, Alabama, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia. Remembering Feared Baseball Slugger Dick Allen By Lou Hunsinger, Jr.

T

his year continues to be a bad year for baseball players I admired in my youth. The latest sadness comes with the news last week of the death of feared baseball slugger Dick Allen, who had an outstanding 11-year major league career and who once played here in Williamsport for the Grays in 1962. His death is the latest in the line of great major leaguers who have died this year, including Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Joe Morgan, Al Kaline, Bob Gibson, and Whitey Ford. What makes Allen’s death even more tragic is the fact that Dick had a very good chance at being voted into the hallowed halls of the National Baseball Hall of Fame next December when the Veterans Committee meets to vote on players from baseball’s “Golden Era.” What’s worse is that Dick should have been voted into the Hall of Fame long ago and been alive to enjoy the

satisfaction and adulation that was due him. There is a strong case for Dick Allen’s enshrinement in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I will go into more detail about that later. Dick was one of my favorite baseball players as I was growing up. I was awed by his prodigious batting power, with his mighty tape measure home runs and his stylishness as a player. I was lucky enough to meet and talk with Dick at the Crosscutters’ first Hot Stove League Banquet in 2007. He was there with legendary Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas, former Phils’ General Manager Pat Gillick, who himself was voted into the Hall of Fame as a baseball executive, and former Lewisburg area major leaguer, Steve Kline — but Allen was the real attraction for me. There was a special gathering for the press before the banquet, but Dick did not have any part of that, not because he was being unfriendly but because he did not enjoy meeting

DICK ALLEN with the media. He just liked talking to fans. So, I wandered down to the hotel bar and found him there and introduced myself and my friend, Mike Person to him and gave him copies of both of the books I had co-written on the history of baseball in Williamsport, “Williamsport’s Baseball Heritage,” and “Gateway To the Majors: Williamsport and Minor League Baseball.” He looked at them and started to smile, and we enjoyed a great conversation for about 20 minutes or so. “I really enjoyed playing here in Williamsport for the Grays in 1962. We had a great team, and the fans here were great,” Allen said. “We won the regular season pennant by something like 20 games before being beat by Elmira in the playoffs.” Interestingly, one of the pitchers on that Elmira team was Pat Gillick. Allen told me that although his experience here in Williamsport was, for the most part, positive, it was still hard sometimes for him and some of the other African-American ballplayers to find a place to stay

here. He said sometimes they stayed at the Lycoming Hotel (now the Genetti), or they found a couple of boardinghouses to stay at after some hard searching. One of the lasting legacies he took from Williamsport was his first wife, the former Barbara Moore. He said that her father, whose nickname was “Bucket,” served as a father figure for him and that he admired and loved him greatly. Allen’s eyes misted over slightly as he talked of “Bucket.” He also spoke admiringly and lovingly of his mother, Era, who he said did so much to shape his life for the good. Allen confirmed to me a story I had heard about 15 years ago from the late Rankin Johnson, former president of the Eastern League, who said that Allen asked him to contact Phillies officials to ask permission for him to play over the winter with the Williamsport Billies team of the Eastern Professional Basketball League. He said that John Quinn, Phils’ general manager at the time, said no because he did not want to

see Allen jeopardize his career with a possible offseason injury. Allen had been a standout high school basketball player at Wampum, in western Pennsylvania. The Billies still made the playoffs that year without him but lost in those playoffs. It is interesting to speculate how the Billies would have ultimately fared with Dick in their line-up. He talked nostalgically and fondly of that 1962 Grays team. “We had a wonderful manager, Frank

Lucchesi, when I was here,” Allen said. “He taught me a lot as well as the rest of the guys on the team. It was a tough league that year; there were some great players playing it, especially pitchers such as Tommy John, Dave McNally, Luis Tiant, and Wilbur Wood. I was just beaten out for the batting title by Jim Ray Hart, who later started for San Francisco and Ken Harrelson was quite a slugger that year as well. I remember Hart and I were fighting it out for the league batting title, and he and his

DICK ALLEN

Springfield Giants team were playing us the last couple games of the season here. The night before that last game, I took Jim Ray out drinking, thinking it might affect him the next night and increase my chances of winning the batting title. We went out to the old Walnut Inn and the Fourth Ward Grill and had a good old time. Well, that next night, Jim went something like 3 for 4, and I think I went 0 for 4, and he won the batting title.” Allen said the playoff disappointment of 1962 gave him a foretaste of an even greater disappointment, the Phillies pennant race collapse in 1964 when they had a 6 ½ game lead with about ten games to go. “That was a terrible experience for us. We lost two games 1-0 on steals of home — one by Cincinnati’s Chico Ruiz and the Dodgers’ Willie Davis.” Dick really wowed them at the banquet, and he and the audience seemed to have really enjoyed themselves. I know I did. Statistically, there is a strong case for Dick’s Hall of Fame candidacy. During his peak period from 1964 to 1974, his batting average was .299, his on base percentage was .386, his

slugging percentage was .554. During that period, only Henry Aaron had greater OPS (On-Base Plus Slugging Percentage.). Dick excelled during a period when pitching was dominant with Hall of Famers such as Bob Gibson, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry, Ferguson Jenkins, Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, and Nolan Ryan plying their trade. By most measures, he should be a Hall of Famer. The development of analytics and Sabermetrics has strengthened his case. But it seems that, like many things, it comes down to the writers and voters’ perception of his personality and temperament. Because he was a proud, dignified black man who suffered no indignities gladly and was outspoken about that, he was labeled a “troublemaker.” The writers didn’t think he “properly knew his place” and labeled him difficult and temperamental, which made him unpopular, particularly when it came time to vote for the Hall of Fame. He now has a pretty fair shot at being enshrined in the place he belongs, the Hall of Fame, but unfortunately, he won’t be here to enjoy it.

There is a perfect tree in between two of the new houses towards the top of the Summer Street on the left going up. A little patch of dark woods where this pine tree sits, just waiting to become a beautifully lit Christmas tree. I would love to donate the lights and extension cords for it next year! (Shoot, I’d even do it now and decorate it!) Please, feel free to get in contact with me through the Webb! I thank you all for making this such a happy place, and your dedication to it each and every year. You give so many people joy each Christmas. Thank you all so very much. multilayered novel about family and best-forgotten memories, then look for “Hieroglyphics” by Jill McCorkle. When Lil and Frank move back to Frank’s childhood hometown, the past moves in with them. Wrap it up with “True Story: A Novel” by Kate Reed Petty, the story of childhood trauma and the chance for those who lived it to recover from it. For the giftee who’s about to pack up and move across the country, “The Exiles” by Christina Baker Kline might be a good choice for a gift. It’s a novel about three women who are

story of a woman who wishes she’d never overheard what she did. For the giftee who loves to be surprised, wrap up “The Book of Hidden Wonders” by Polly Crosby. It’s the story of a girl whose father entertained her with a story in which she’s a character, and it becomes a big bestseller. Good for her, right? Or not so much. Wrap it up with “The Falling Woman” by Richard Farrell, a book about a woman who supposedly died in a plane crash – only she didn’t, but she wants to stay “dead.” The person on your list who loves a good family drama will want “The Lost Orphan” by Stacey Halls under the tree this year. It’s the story of two women and one little girl, and a secret that won’t be able to be kept for long. Pair it with “The End of the Day” by Bill Clegg, a novel of friendship, relationships, and the resolution of long-buried secrets. No doubt, there’s a historical fiction fan on your list, so there’s no doubt that you’ll want to wrap up “Bonnie: A Novel” by Christina Schwarz.

Yep, it’s a fictionalized tale of Bonnie Parker, and how she became one of the early 20th-century’s most iconic outlaws. Wrap it up with “The Big Finish” by Brooke Fossey, a novel about two outlaws that you’d never put together and their great escape. If you’ve got a big reader on your list, it’s hard to find something they haven’t already seen. That’s why you should wrap up “Layoverland” by Gabby Noone. It’s the tale of a woman who lives a life she’s not proud of, so when she dies, she goes to purgatory. There’s a chance for her to go to heaven, but it involves helping the guy who killed her. Pair it with “The Midnight Library” by Matt Haig, the story of a possible place that offers a re-do of life. It’s a spot between living and dying, but it’s not what your giftee thinks it is... The short-story lover will enjoy “Cat Person” and Other Stories” by Kristen Roupenian, a collection of creepy, odd tales that doubles as a gift of shivers. Can’t go wrong if you pair it with “The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home”

sightings left. For the novel-lover who professes to hate their job, you can’t go wrong with “Hench” by Natalie Zina Walschots. It’s the super-witty story of a woman with an unusual job (hey, somebody’s got to do it!) and what she does to remain gainfully employed after the next-to-worst thing happens. If you’re smart, you’ll pair it with “Lies Lies Lies” by Adele Parks, the story of a family and the party that changes everything... Lovers of family-drama-type

Outfits, Not Just Clothes…

Eye Cream vs. Eye Serum

W

hen it comes to your everyday skincare routine, you probably have your go-to products down pat. However, as we roll into the colder, dryer, and darker days of winter, it may be a good time to check in on the easily overlooked skin of the under eye. For those of us lacking in a regime for this delicate but equally important area, it can be confusing to sort

through all of the products out there. Which begs the question, what is the difference between an eye cream and an eye serum? And do we need both? To answer the second question first, yes, individuals should be using both an eye serum and a cream as they address different eye area skin concerns. Eye cream is more often used to retain moisture, while serums have specific anti-aging purposes. You may be

thinking, “I have a great face cream that I use all over my face, including my undereye.” Good for you! However, the skin underneath and around the eye Bernadette is particularly Ulsamer sensitive and may need more care than the forehead, chin, and cheeks. Eye creams should be used daily to hydrate the skin around the eye,

focusing on reducing puffiness, dark circles, and overall dullness. Since creams are mainly for moisture, they also help with crepiness and rough texture. Eye creams are usually thicker and heavier than regular moisturizers and aren’t just for the under eye, but also the lid and brow. In fact, more advanced eye creams now incorporate ingredients to help with crows’ feet. Eye serums are lighter than creams and better able to penetrate pores with anti-aging ingredients. Serums, in general, are better for wrinkles and help improve skin firmness. With

consider signing up for monthly beauty box subscriptions like Birch Box or Glossybox. Whether you go with a 3, 6, or 12-month subscription, you get to explore products not usually found at your local drugstore. You can often personalize what you’re sent if you want to focus just on skincare. From Birch Box, I discovered Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye and Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum. I also discovered that I am a bit sensitive to retinols and need to use products containing them with a very light touch. For truly little-to-no commitment product use, consider eye masks. You can try out not only a variety of brands but also ingredients. Sephora offers eye masks and patches from an array of companies, all with a mix of ingredients, like cucumber, vitamin C, even caffeine. These one-off treatments are usually cheaper than an overall care system. As we prepare for the holidays and winter ahead, consider gifting yourself some skincare, and switch up your beauty routine with a new eye cream and eye serum. It’s been a rough year; you’re going to need them both!

eye serums, the focus is more on the active components like peptides, antioxidants, and retinols rather than on moisturizing. Serums aren’t meant for daily use, but once or twice a week. When incorporating eye creams and serums into your skincare regimen, you may want to consult a dermatologist if you have super sensitive skin or are prone to rosacea or eczema. If you don’t have dermatological concerns, look to the products and brands you currently use for eye creams and serums. Many skincare companies offer sets or product lines that are meant to work together to give you softer, firmer, and clearer skin. The TimeWise set from Mary Kay is a good example. And you can try out their travel version for just $25, which comes with a cleanser, sunscreen, night cream, and eye cream. For fans of all-natural skincare, check out Tata Harper’s daily essentials set. The sample size version includes reparative moisturizer, rejuvenating serum, cleanser, hydrating floral essence, resurfacing mask, and a restorative eye crème. If you want to “play the field” in your search for the perfect cream and serum,

hen you see your doctor for an annual checkup, they’ll want to know details not only about you but your family as well — including if your family has a history of cancer. This information can help your doctor paint a clearer picture of health risks due to your family’s health history. The problem is many people aren’t aware of their full family history which can leave you unknowingly at risk. Use this holiday season to have the necessary discussion related to your family’s health. Genetics and Cancer Families have many factors in common, including their genes, environment, and lifestyle. Together, these factors can give clues to medical conditions that may run in a family. By noticing patterns of disorders among relatives, health care professionals can determine whether an individual,

other family members, or future generations may be at an increased risk of developing a particular condition. While about 5 to 10% of all cancers are linked to a gene problem that is inherited from your parents, if you have a family member who had or has cancer doesn’t mean you will develop it as well. It does mean that if one or both of your parents had a cancer, the chance of you getting that same type of cancer is increased somewhat compared with another person in the population. For this reason, it’s important to know and disclose your family medical history to your doctor or consider screening for specific conditions. If you have a family member with cancer, there are many reasons it is beneficial to know your cancer risk: – Understanding the risk of cancer for you or your children. – Discovering if inheritance played a role in the development of your or a family member’s cancer – Obtaining information about cancer screening tests, such as mammography or colonoscopy, and about how often

What Can I Expect at a Cancer Genetics Risk Consultation? A cancer genetics risk consultation can provide information about your cancer risk, cancer screenings, and genetic testing that you may want to consider based on your personal or family cancer history. Patients who receive a consultation will learn about inherited and environmental factors that may cause cancer in a family or an individual. Patients meet with a geneticist to completely review the family and medical histories with regard to cancer. During the consultation, you will discuss: – An estimation of your risks for specific cancers based on your age, family history, and other factors. – An assessment of your cancer family tree. – The possible role of genetics in your family’s cancer. – Emotional issues surrounding cancer and risk.

Furness was now dependent on others to help him reach things and to do the simplest of tasks that he had taken for granted all his life. His height, weight, and strength had all changed in an instant. As Furness describes it, his average was reset, and when he considered his capabilities, he constantly compared his current self

felt a tingling sensation run down his extremities. Pinned forward into the console of the machine, Furness yelled for help. Eventually, his wife heard him and came running. She asked if it was her help he needed or the kind of help that required her to call 911. He replied, the latter. He took his first ride in a helicopter that fateful day to the hospital of all places. The damage to his back was not overly dramatic. He simply had broken a couple of vertebrae. The problem, however, was that the blow had severed his spinal cord. The doctors told Dean that it was unlikely that he would ever

to the man he used to be. He was less than what he had been. He was frustrated and depressed — and rightfully so. His wife prodded him to cheer up and get moving forward, and he realized that he needed to stop using his former capabilities to measure his current progress. He had to forget his former self and pretend that person never existed. If he didn’t, Furness says, that his frustration might have turned into something darker. A few weeks after his injury, he was transferred to a rehab hospital. That very first day, he was taken to a fitness class where he, along with others recovering from similar injuries, were broken up into teams. The idea was to combine a bit of healthy competition with some exercise. Furness, being a former competitive athlete, went all out, and he and his team won their competition. The problem was that he couldn’t move his arms for the next three days. For a wheelchair-bound person, this is a big deal, as you are completely dependent upon the use of your arms for mobility. It was then, after his “healthy” competition, that Furness realized not only could he not compare himself to what he had been, but that he should

not compare himself to anyone. Even people in a similar situation. He had to start fresh and examine where he, and only he, was right now at this moment in time. To move forward, he had to let go of everything, start looking at his current situation and set goals based only on that. For the next six weeks, for 7-8 hours per day, Furness made incremental progress. Sometimes having good days and sometimes having bad days. During this process, he discovered that it was up to him to decide whether or not a day could be judged as bad or good. He also discovered that no day was truly bad. Sure, there were difficult moments, but no day was ever entirely bad. He found that the quicker he could move on and move forward when faced with a difficult moment, the less time was actually spent in a “bad” moment. With less time spent going through bad situations, more time is spent in good times; thus, the good outweighs the bad. During the course of his physical therapy, Dean Furness was presented with an interesting challenge. His therapist suggested that he should compete in a half marathon in his wheelchair with only ten weeks to train.

He maintains that his philosophy of incremental progress has made him a better parent, husband, coach, teammate, and person. With uncertainty, he began to research techniques, workouts, and equipment. He was able to complete that race and eventually worked his way up to a full marathon. He improved on the times and progress he had built by tracking his own workouts meticulously. It didn’t matter what people with working legs were doing or what times they got. It didn’t matter what other wheelchair athletes were doing. The only thing that mattered was where he was at that moment compared to the day before. He was only concerned with his current progress. hese girls took a major blow when the spring season was cancelled. They were registered for the EPYSA (Eastern Pa Youth Soccer Association) outdoor state cup and regular league play in EDP (Elite Development Program) based in Philly and NJ. When everything shut down they moved into virtual and independent skills and workouts. They developed a cardio incentive, juggling incentive, and skills incentive. They also did team zoom sessions to keep everyone together. The girls worked out like crazy each trying to outdo the other to win the incentives,

which were mostly gift cards or home delivered meals during our coach dash incentive. Once they were able to play again in late July, the girls came out with a spark like never seen before. They competed in six tournaments and won five of them. They also went undefeated in our EDP league (9-0) where they scored 48 goals, and only allowed two during their nine league games. From July to currently, in just outdoor play, they accumulated 29 wins with only 2 losses and totaled 147 goals scored. The girls received the rank of #1 in PA and #3 in the U.S and Canada. The Roving Sportsman… Last Minute Christmas Gift Ideas By Jon Pries

ith a scant one week of shopping days left until the arrival of Christmas morning, we need to take a serious look at a couple of great ideas for that hard-tobuy-for sportsman on your gift-giving list. The ideas will include items that I have used and found to be highly useful and handy for any hunter, shooter, or outdoorsman. And, no, I am not endorsed or paid by any company I might mention! Firearms: Yep, nothing quite says “I love you, dearest!” like a package unwrapped on Christmas morning that yields to the unsuspecting recipient a longed-for firearm that they have day-dreamed about for months and months! But there are a few things you need to keep in mind before you head out to shop for a firearm of any kind for your significant other, son or daughter or your best hunting buddy. There are some legal and ethical obligations that

are applicable to firearms that are not attached to other consumer products that are given as gifts. First and foremost, you need to make sure whether or not the intended recipient can legally own a firearm where they live. Are they old enough? In some states, there is a minimum age for owning a handgun. Might there be any type of criminal background that you are not aware of? During the actual purchase and registration process, a background check will be accomplished that will (should) uncover any such history that would prevent legal ownership of a firearm. Be careful — it is a federal felony to knowingly transfer ownership of a firearm to someone whom you know cannot legally own one. There is no federal law that prohibits a gift of a firearm to a relative or friend that lives in your home state. Pennsylvania does require a background check for private party transfer of a handgun. It might be best to check with a local firearms dealer to verify that all requirements are

readily available in various models and calibers. Henry makes a quality product and the company is very supportive of the shooting sports. Everyone I have ever talked to who owns one of the Henry rifles is very happy with the workmanship, the accuracy and the joy of shooting it. Here again, perhaps a gift certificate that specifies a Henry rifle might be the wisest way to present the gift, allowing the recipient the final say in the exact specifications. Looking for a “stocking-stuffer” to go along with that new firearm? A scope is usually a very welcome gift for the owner of a new rifle or even handgun, and Leupold boasts a lifetime guarantee for their made in the USA scopes. I have owned quite a few of their optics for many years and continue to be very satisfied with their clarity and rugged construction. Finally, ammunition for the weapon you might be gifting can always be placed under the Christmas tree or in the stocking hanging on the mantle over the fireplace. It will be fun to watch someone open a box of ammunition and then see them wondering if there just might be a firearm to accompany the ammo!

properly met. Consider giving a gift certificate from a local retailer rather than actually purchasing a gun and then going through a process of transferring ownership. That way, the receiver of your gift can pick out exactly what they want regarding maker, model, stock style, caliber and overall appearances. When they actually select what they want and they fill out the Federal Form 4473 to initiate the background check, they can properly identify themselves as “the actual buyer of the firearm.” In the case of gifting a firearm, such as an old family heirloom or a favorite deer rifle of yours to a family member, there may be laws in place that require even inter-family transfers to be accomplished through a licensed retailer so that a background check may be completed. Antique firearms — those made before 1898 — are generally exempt from any such requirements, but be safe by checking with a local firearms retailer as to the proper procedure to follow. Want a recommendation? Henry rifles are made right here in the USA. They have a nostalgic appearance, are highly prized by those who own them, are fun to shoot and are

The second scenario was for me to take Tyler on a stalk closer to the deer and hopefully get a clearer shot — we opted for the second option. Stalking bedded down deer that you can watch as you move isn’t something most experienced hunters might do, let alone two hunters — one of which never hunted a deer in his life. I had been watching the bedded deer through my binoculars for over an hour, and I noticed that they were laying down facing down the slope — none were looking our way, and the wind was in our favor. After a halfhour, we managed to close the gap down to about a hundred yards and better visibility. Upon reevaluating the situation, we found the three deer we could now see were laying one in front of the other, with each deer’s head and neck blocking the desired lung shot just behind the shoulder of the deer behind it. We had no option but to take the first deer. Following the shot, those deer and several more we hadn’t seen before jumped up and took off — including the one Tyler shot at. I told Tyler we

name there in the White House.” Asked how she felt watching events on television during the presidential campaign and wondering if Brandon might be there, Terri’s response presented a strong brotherly bond. “Usually Brandon will tell D.J. (his brother who is a junior at South Williamsport) first about where he may be, and then we hear about it from D.J. But, yes, I do wonder where he is, and what he is doing. He has had many neat experiences, including going down to Florida for the space shuttle launch. There have been occasions when he has gone to sporting events when assigned to members of the president or vice president’s family. There have also been times when he was near some of the civil unrest things that were taking place. As a mother, I worried about that, but we are very proud of what he is doing.” January will mark his third year with the Secret Service. Although his young career has provided many memorable moments, Gantz points to his general training aspects as times that have given him many personal memories and humorous occasions. “There are a lot of funny memories with my classmates going through some tough times that we had to gut out together and work together as a team so we could get everyone to pass. For me, and I think for all of us, the achievement of graduating and, just like sports, doing it together as a team is something I’m really proud of.” Just like he did while a Mountaineer, Brandon Gantz has become a valuable member of the Secret Service team.

But as Christmas approaches, he has been assigned to duties at the Trump Towers in New York City. “It is a general security assignment,” he explained. “Anyone who enters the building or has deliveries to the building must be screened.” Asked to describe a typical day’s work at the White House, Gantz’s response seemed like any other worker talking about his job. “It is the White House, but it is also where I work, so a typical day for me carries a routine, just like any other job someone would have. We deal with motorcades entering and leaving the premises, have duties when tours of the White House are taking place, perimeter control, and being constantly visual of anyone who may be breaking the law.” Although he has never flown on Air Force One (“That is very specific. I have been standing right next to it, but have never been assigned duties to go aboard.”), he has been assigned to details guarding both President Trump and Vice President Pence as well as members of their families. During the months leading up to the November election, Gantz’s duties remained much the same, although he admitted, “I got in a lot more travel and a lot of overtime.” “I am so proud of him,” admitted Brandon’s mother, Terri. “Last August, we attended Brandon’s graduation from his Secret Service trainings. Brandon was the only one from Pennsylvania, and most all the other graduates were from bigger cities. It made me step back a moment and say, ‘Wow, that is our kid.’ It is hard to describe, but it was so touching to see his

safe outside of school.” The PENNSYLVANIA PRINCIPALS ASSOCIATION recommended a delay to the start of the winter sports season earlier this week. But the P E N N S Y LVA N I A INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION said we were good to go. The recent surges of cases among children increases the risk of asymptomatic participants who might spread the virus at a game or practice. The same goes in the locker room or on the bus traveling to and from. We had practice from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. that evening. My phone continued to buzz throughout the night. The boys and I had a great chat before we got started. I told them this decision was totally out of our hands but we all knew it was coming. Tough pill to swallow. It was a coaching moment. Of course, they were disappointed. We had every inten-

tion of opening up this weekend. We passed out our uniforms, and were keeping our fingers crossed. The boys were doing extremely well with everything considered. I am very proud of my guys for adjusting. We have been wearing our masks and keeping our distance. They seem to understand the complex situation. The SJNRA Knights remain optimistic. We are also very thankful for the opportunity. Being able to spend some quality time together the past few weeks was very beneficial. Not only for the boys. But especially for their coach. It may sound cliche, but we were blessed to get in what we did. Stayed tuned sports fans.
